Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

"At some point in everyone's life, they've (played Tarzan)." says filmmaker and Fun Train VR Founder/CEO Douglas Nabors. He's explaining how he and his team came to decide on their second VR project, Tarzan VR™, released in December, 2020. In 2017, Fun Train VR had their hit first release, The Exorcist: Legion VR.   While the classic horror title garnered rave reviews, Douglas says Fun Train VR is producing various other genres as virtual-reality experiences. Tarzan VR™, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs classic adventure series, is getting a similarly enthusiastic response from gamers.    Swimming, puzzle-solving and a sense of humor are all part of the new series.   But one of the top features which gamers mentions as their favorite?  The vine-swinging. Episodes 1 and 2 of Tarzan VR™ are currently available, both on Fun Train VR's website and on Steam.  Douglas says Episode 3 is in beta. And Fun Train VR has a third project currently in the works.   This one will be a sci-fi experience! While that's about all we can tell you currently, Douglas says there will be an announcement in the future, both about this project and about some new developments with The Exorcist: Legion VR. What we can tell you, though?  If you have an Oculus Quest, get ready to do some vine-swinging.  The Oculus Quest didn't exist whenFun Train started development on  Tarzan VR™--but Douglas says Tarzan VR™is coming to the platform next year! On this edition of Over Coffee®, we cover: How Douglas and his team decided on Tarzan VR as their startup's second release; A look at the experience of working with the Edgar Rice Burroughs team; What players experience, as they play Tarzan VR; How the team made the physics of the game work (swinging, swimming) to avoid motion sickness among gamers; A look at the creative decisions involved in developing the project; An "Easter egg" you can find in Tarzan VR! The "fun" ways the game developed, that weren't in the original plans; What Douglas considers especially fun, when he plays Tarzan VR! Douglas's tips, to other creators, about what works well, and what does not work, when storytelling in VR; A hint of some exciting forthcoming developments at Fun Train VR, for the future; One of the most exciting areas in which Douglas considers that he has grown, as a creative, while working on Tarzan VR™.

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

This is an Over Coffee® special-edition podcast, incorporating our 2018 interview. This Halloween, Los Angeles-based virtual reality publisher Fun Train VR is set to scare even more horror fans. And that's a good thing. In time for Halloween, 2019, they're released a deluxe edition of their first product, The Exorcist: Legion VR, on the STEAM website.  The Exorcist: Legion VR is licensed from Morgan Creek Film Partners, and based on the classic horror movie.   The title was developed by Wolf & Wood. And the experience immerses horror fans in a terrifying scenario of a murder mystery against the backdrop of demonic possession.   Fun Train originally released The Exorcist: Legion VR as a five-episode experience in October, 2018.  Since then, emails Fun Train VR Founder and CEO Douglas Nabors , YouTube playthroughs by fans have generated nearly 15 million views. (Photo courtesy of Fun Train, and used with permission. Photographer: Karen Strauss, difficultegg.com) Douglas also says The Exorcist: Legion VR received an exciting honor.  In May 2019, it was one of fifty exclusive titles to launch the Oculus Quest headset. This headset, Douglas explains, is the first step towards virtual reality becoming a mass-market industry. But--that's just Chapter One for Douglas and Fun Train VR.  They've just announced their second title, currently in production. As another classic title, very different from the horror genre, this will also be an experience based on storytelling. Here is Douglas' account, originally recorded in 2018, of the creation of The Exorcist: Legion VR, and the resources he recommends to fellow creatives. On this edition of Over Coffee® , you’ll hear: How Douglas first became interested in creating entertainment as his life’s work; How he first discovered virtual reality as a vehicle for storytelling; What the creative process was like, in bringing The Exorcist: Legion VR to life in virtual reality; Parts of The Exorcist: Legion VR that actually scared Douglas–even though he knows they’re coming! One of the biggest creative challenges Douglas and his team encountered, while telling a story in episodic virtual reality; The resources Douglas recommends, for anyone who wants to create stories or games in virtual reality; His vision for the ways Fun Train VR will be evolving and upgrading their VR experiences in the future.

(Photo courtesy of Fun Train, and used with permission.   Photographer: Karen Strauss, difficultegg.com The Exorcist: Legion VR will immerse you in a terrifying, demon-infested world. It'll also show you an interactive great time.  This is a game with lots of storytelling, an ominous atmosphere and occurrences designed to raise the hairs on the back of any horror fan's neck. Douglas Nabors is both a filmmaker and the Founder and CEO of Los Angeles-based virtual reality publisher Fun Train. And the challenge he and his team faced: to design an equally-compelling and intense episodic gaming experience, after obtaining a license to one of the most popular--and chilling--classic horror titles ever created. (Photo courtesy of Fun Train, and used with permission.    Photographer: Karen Strauss, difficultegg.com.) With The Exorcist: Legion VR, Douglas and his team serve up elements of exorcism, mystery, suspense--and, of course, moments that will scare the daylights out of you.  Gamers have given it rave reviews, calling The Exorcist:Legion VR "terrifying" and "one of the best VR horror experiences available". At the time we recorded this interview, Fun Train had released three of their five episodes of The Exorcist: Legion VR.  Since then, they've released Chapters Four and Five, for the Oculus, Steam and Humble platforms.   In late September, they announced the release date, October 9th, of these chapters for Playstation, as well. Douglas talked about his background and the creative process involved in creating The Exorcist: Legion VR, as well as offering some guidance for fellow creatives who want to design VR experiences. On this edition of Over Coffee® , you'll hear: How Douglas first became interested in creating entertainment as his life's work; How he first discovered virtual reality as a vehicle for storytelling; What the creative process was like, in bringing The Exorcist: Legion VR to life in virtual reality; Parts of The Exorcist: Legion VR that actually scared Douglas--even though he knows they're coming!
