My guest is Douglas Smythe, who describes himself as a “Male Grooming & Shaving Guru.” He's written, blogged, and podcasted about shaving—yes, that kind of shaving, of your face—and has a website where he sells all manner of shaving stuff. This is not using an electric razor: this is using one of those old-timey-style blade shavers and shaving soap (not lather or cream). He had lots of information and was a hoot to interview.

Please explain the concept between me and us? When should kids start taking responsibility? Who is the hero of your book? Should you give your kid a video game, when? Why are grandparents important today, what is their responsibility? Are boundaries for kids important? Why shouldn't a parent become their child's friend? How does a grandparent navigate dealing with their kids in terms of their grandchildren's behaviors? Lather Talk #017: On today’s show, we have special guests Douglas Smythe and Fran Towle, the faces behind Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements! We’ll discuss how the couple transitioned Phoenix Shaving from a part-time project to full-time and the challenges associated with running your own business. We’ll also get some insight from the couple, who have been in the wet shaving game since 2012, about how to get more people into traditional wet shaving. Douglas Smythe is known for his larger-than-life personality and has largely been the face of PAA, whether on YouTube, podcasts, or marketing materials, however in this interview, we had the pleasure of getting to know his partner Fran Towle, who has only done a handful of interviews and has largely worked behind the scenes. One thing to note is that news of the Coronavirus was just starting to emerge at the time of this interview, so while we do talk a little bit about the Big Shave S’West event, the meet-up was postponed shortly just days after the interview. The days when men shaved with safety razors – where the user inserts a single double-edge blade into a shaving implement – are long gone, made obsolete by cartridge blades and electronic razors. Or are they? Since 2012, Douglas Smythe, founder of Phoenix Shaving, has seen demand for his safety razors, blades, and other related grooming products for men boom. Douglas attributes the success of his business to three main factors: 1.) safety razors provide a more comfortable shave, despite all the hype around 3-blade and 5-blade cartridges. 2.) The replaceable blades cost only a fraction of cartridges. 3.) Men fondly remember their fathers or grandfather’s using a safety razor. As Douglas tells host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart, he is using 21st Century marketing – including a YouTube breakfast-hour show called I’d Lather Be Shaving – and an annual confab of hobbyists and other shaving enthusiasts, to drive sales and an expanding line of related products. Believe it or Not: Rotbart brand razors, blades, and accessories were the best-selling shaving products in Germany in the early part of the 20th Century. In fact, in about 1927, Gillette bought out Rotbart and for many years thereafter used Rotbart’s designs and patents. Douglas Smith of Phoenix Shaving joins Talking Beards and we discuss the art of shaving. He gives us some tips on products and proper care of your skin. Scott has tried out a bunch of his products and raves about the results he has got from all of them. Douglas also shared some fun history lessons on shaving and the products that were made many years ago. Scott, Aaron, Chris, and Douglas had a very entertaining time talking about aliens and played some "alien" trivia with the LIVE audience. We also had a real "flub" at the start of the live stream on YouTube but we caught it for the podcast so make sure to listen all the way to the end to hear the hilarious commentary we had over some random cartoon that took over our feed!!! One of the things I did to grow aPennyShaved was to reach out to a bunch of other bloggers in the shaving community, a process I outlined in one of my previous posts. It was a super fun process, the response was spectacular, and I ended up making a bunch of cool friends. One of those friends was Douglas Smythe, who founded Howtogrowamoustache.com. We exchanged emails about shaving, discussed blogging strategies and ended up collaborating on a guest post, which was a ton of fun. The more Douglas and I chatted, the more I became absolutely fascinated and blown away by his success in the very same community I was working to succeed in, especially because his site wasn’t just a simple ad-supported site. Douglas was leveraging his traffic to expand his shaving site into a larger, product-driven business.
