Louisiana Creole Peoplehood is the book they collaborated on. “Over the course of more than three centuries, the diverse communities of Louisiana have engaged in creative living practices to forge a vibrant, multifaceted, and fully developed Creole culture. Against the backdrop of ongoing anti-Blackness and Indigenous erasure that has sought to undermine this rich culture, Louisiana Creoles have found transformative ways to uphold solidarity, kinship, and continuity, retaking Louisiana Creole agency as a post-contact Afro-Indigenous culture. Engaging themes as varied as foodways, queer identity, health, historical trauma, language revitalization, and diaspora, Louisiana Creole Peoplehood explores vital ways a specific Afro-Indigenous community asserts agency while promoting cultural sustainability, communal dialogue, and community reciprocity.” Rain works within Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous Studies — literature; ecology; gender, two-spirit, and sexuality; Métis; Louisiana Creole; Red/Black Rhetorics; and critical mixed race. It was the summer of 2013 in Campbelltown, New Brunswick, Canada. Noah and Connor Barthe, who were 4 and 6 years old, had spent the day having a blast with family friends at a farm. That evening, they had a sleepover at their best friend's house, which was located just above an exotic pet store that his father owned.Follow Serial Napper on iHeartRadio - https://ihr.fm/3I9quYMFollow on Apple Podcasts - https://apple.co/3t9HoCIFollow Everywhere Else - https://bit.ly/3q1OF5pNot all of the animals were kept downstairs in the store. Jean-Claude Savoie owned a 12-foot-long African rock python which was kept in a glass enclosure in the apartment. Somehow, during the night, the python escaped through an air duct. The 100lbs snake broke through the ceiling right above where the boys were sleeping in the living room. The following morning at around 6:30 am, Savoie would walk into the living room to a horrifying scene. The two little boys had been killed - crushed to death by the python.Their family friends and the community were devastated over the loss of these two very loved children, while the python owner was charged with criminal negligence. He would be found not guilty, surprising some, and relieving others. There are no charges that could ever bring back these two incredible little boys, but there is a lesson here in responsible pet ownership and speaking up when you see something wrong.► YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@SerialNapper/► Twitter - https://twitter.com/serial_napper► Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/serialnappernik/► Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SerialNapper/► TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@serialnappernik~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can find Indie Drop-In at https://indiedropin.com Help Indie Drop-In support indie creators by buying us a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/indiedropin Brands can advertise on Indie Drop-In using Patreon https://patreon.com/indiedropin Twitter: https://twitter.com/indiedropin Instagram: https://instagram.com/indiedropin Facebook: https://facebook.com/indiedropin Any advertising found in this episode is inserted by Indie Drop-In and not endorsed by the Creator. He had a life-changing accident while surfing – but Alex's RNLI training helped save his life Working as a RNLI lifeguard in Scarborough, Alex was passionate about saving lives at sea and loved the water. But, on the 28 March 2013, while surfing on holiday in Argentina, he hit his head on the sea floor and was left face down in the water, unable to move his arms or legs. He puts his survival down to two main factors: the man who first came to help him in the water – and his own RNLI training. He knew that he'd probably suffered a spinal injury and was able to instruct the people around him on what to do. Alex, who suffered paralysis in most of his body, talks about how his vital lifesaving skills came into play that day. And about how now, as an office-based volunteer for the RNLI, his dedication to saving lives at sea continues today. 200 Voices is produced by Adventurous Audio for the RNLI Interview by the RNLI's Isobel Noctor Soundtrack composed and performed by Jon Nicholls The RNLI is a charity celebrating 200 years of saving lives at sea - find out more at RNLI.org/200

You've probably heard the advice to lower your expectations when you're blending a family. But what does that really mean?Does it mean you're supposed to keep the bar low and not expect much of anything? Or is there something more to this common advice for blended families? In this episode, we'll explore the difference between lowering your expectations altogether vs. developing achievable expectations for your family.I (Mike) struggled for years holding onto unrealistic expectations that added a whole lot of pressure and stress to our situation. Eventually, I realized that holding onto my own "dreams" and expecting everyone else to comply was taking us in the opposite direction of what I wanted. My high expectations were sabotaging our progress. But realizing this didn't mean I needed to give up on my hopes for our family — I really wanted good things for all of us.Listen in as Kim and I discuss how we eventually learned to get united, to set realistic expectations for our home, and make real progress toward those things we each wanted to experience in our blended family. You'll Discover:What it really means to "lower" your expectations — in a healthy wayHow to embrace realistic expectations without lowering the barThe difference between relational expectations and behavioral expectationsPractical ways to reduce disappointment, hold onto hope, and live out achievable expectations in your home Resources from this Episode:What is the Stranded Stranger / Trapped Teammate Dynamic? After some time in the tank, this episode features the ideas that have brought me back. I introduce the concept of semio-stratocracy, an amalgam of Barthe's/Baudrillard's semiocracy, or rule by signs; and stratocracy, a term for a government dominated by the military. I lay out a kind of semiotic conflict theory drawing on Bateson's work on the double bind, Baudrillard/Wilden's idea of a higher logical order being necessary to displace a system, and Schmitt's concept of the sovereign deciding the state of exception, and defining the normal situation. In this, I venture a new warfighting concept, along with semio-stratocracy itself and also the idea of the weaponized concept, namely sacrificial transparency, to begin to describe an operational logic which can carry us out of a spiraling war logic.

Mark Edwards joins the podcast to talk about his new book "Christ Is Time: The Gospel according to Karl Barth (and the Red Hot Chili Peppers)."Christ Is Time: The Gospel according to Karl Barth (and the Red Hot Chili Peppers) welcomes you to the jungle of Barth's head-banging opus, the Church Dogmatics, with the beats, rhythms, and lyrics of Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Metallica, and more. Based on lectures at Princeton Seminary, Edwards distills Barth's treatment of key questions in philosophical and systematic theology, offering a playlist of greatest hits on trinity, Christology, prayer, and others. With the care of a scholar and the energy of a stack of Peaveys, Christ Is Time testifies that the eternal God "gives it away" as time through Jesus Christ. Let's face it: Karl's style is a bit Beastie. And since Depeche Mode can say it best, this just might be a match made in Nirvana. This weeks on Pep Talks, I am taking a quick dive into Roland Barthe's concept of the "Punctum" from his book "Camera Lucida," to explain why some artworks and films stick in your mind and others don't. Find out why Stanley Kubrick's choice of music for scoring "2001: A Space Odyssey" & Ingrid Bergman's turn as a boxing nun made both of these films punctum-y and stick in my brain. Also, come hear about Barthe's personal quest to find a photo of his mother that contained her true essence, and how we as artists can try and infuse our own work with punctum-like staying properties. Works mentioned: "Camera Lucida" (1980) book by Roland Barthes "The Bells of St. Mary's" (1945) film directed by Leo McCarey and starring Ingrid Bergman "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) film by Stanley Kubrick Songs mentioned: "The Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss II used in "2001: A Space Odyssey" "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss used in "2001: A Space Odyssey" "Gesänge der Frühe" or "Songs of the Morning" (1853) by Robert Schumann, mentioned by Roland Barthes Special thanks to P Elaine Sharpe for their contributions to this episode! Whelp, we've found it. The book that encapsulates just about everything that was really rough about the 1980s, from fat-shaming, to absentee (yet still living in the house) fathers, to hitchhikings gone horribly wrong. It's Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade (1981), and let's face it - in the world we enter in this book, the unfairness clearly extends beyond just one year of elementary school. Trigger warnings for people who have struggled with body image, disordered eating, and bullying. Come for the afterschool special that is meant for kids MUCH older than you, stay for the light "Billions" spoilers and discussions of Matt vs. Ben. If you didn't see "The Voyage of the Mimi" when you were a kid, you missed out on GREATNESS.Next time: our spooky season arrives with Wait Till Helen Comes (1986), by Mary Downing Hahn. Please like, subscribe, and tell your friends!
