Time travel happened. We can prove it. Imagine you went to bed one night in 2021 and the next morning you'd awoken in the year 2031? What would be different? How far would technology, society, and general civilization have advanced? In 2020, we saw a glimpse of that kind of advancement for retail. In March 2020 we went to bed and in an industry where 16% of transactions occurred in e-commerce. In May 2020, that percentage had risen to over 27%. Since 2009, retail e-commerce has risen 1% per year and in 2 months, we saw a decade of growth. Retail e-commerce quite literally jumped ten years into the future. What was generally accepted business practices in March were antiquated, outdated and overall useless by June. E-commerce catapulted a decade into the future and we're still playing catch-up. How have you faired? Check out this week's episode and as we deep dive into our to stay relevant and how to gut check whether you're falling behind. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mattresspodcast/message

This was one of the most stupid things that could have been done in treating this highly infectious illnesses. The nursing homes tried to fight it, but lost. In May, because this was such a disaster, they changed how they were counting nursing home COVID deaths to cover up the mess by about 50%. Cuomo subsequently threatened to destroy anyone who dared question why he was covering up the real death numbers. Turns out New York City was the epicenter of COVID, and yet, the USNS Comfort (a Mercy-class hospital ship) sat in the NYC port essentially unused, as was the Javits Center, which the Corps of Engineers had converted to an alternate care facility. Why was this allowed to happen? The Press refused to do its job of investigation. Stephen Parr and Louis Avallone explain.

Bernhard Lang, Member of the Board at MSG System, joins us to discuss innovation and blockchain in the insurance industry. In this podcast we discuss the importance for the insurance industry to remain relevant in an ever changing market. How making innovation a corporate discipline and embracing a customer centric approach to remain engaged in customer ecosystems is critical to that objective of relevance.   What is blockchain? From a non-technical point of view blockchain is a form of digital representation of what we naturally do in real life. We want to be part of social communities within which we communicate, make agreements, state facts, and make promises that are then known to the people within the community as a current status of things or an evolving collective truth. The technical definition of blockchain is that it’s an immutable and distributed technology that enables the creation of new business scenarios. According to Bernhard, too often blockchain technology is looked at from a technology angle first before a business one. He personally prefers that we start with a business problem and then identify blockchain technology if it is the right one for the business problem.   About MSG Bernhard Lang has been with MSG for the past 25 years. MSG is a German product based system integrator. MSG focuses on 10 different lines of business. Their business strategy is to develop industry specific content, software assets, software solutions, that go very deep into the lines of business along with a consulting services associated with it. The majority of MSG’s business is within insurance but also looks at other industry verticals such as banking, public sector, automotive and others. In addition, MSG works with startups such as Ritablock (featured on Insureblocks: Ep. 124 – Reinsurance accounting blockchain, Ritablock integrates with B3i’s Fluidity platform) and they have co-developed the SAP FS-RI (financial services reinsurance), which has become the market standard for professional reinsurance companies and for cedents. Outside of reinsurance, MSG has partnered with Marco Polo, a trade finance blockchain solution, to help them integrate with SAP European Systems.   Insurers approach to blockchain in comparison to mature platforms like SAP Bernhard believes the insurance industry is quite open to blockchain technology however he notes that the materialisation of previous blockchain investments haven’t been that great. Consequently he believes that in the future the insurance industry might be more cautious to making investments in blockchain. MSG has an innovation lab in Canada called Cookhouse Lab. In May 2017, they launched a four week design thinking blockchain workshop along with seven insurance companies where they identified 34 uses cases and created three prototypes. Whilst there was a lot if interest at that time, Bernhard would qualify the output as having had a limited impact and not significant enough to be considered a game changer. Whilst he believes insurers will keep looking at blockchain technology few will expect high returns.   Evaluating new innovative technologies within the insurance industry Bernhard candidly describes the decision making process within insurance companies as being sometimes irrational. To support that statement, he recalls a meeting regarding ACORD standards, which in his opinion represent a huge business case. During that meeting, insurance professionals flew in from around the world, agreed to join forces and create a service organisation. All participants were requested to make a €40,000 investment for this initiative. Unfortunately, they had great difficulties in raising that amount of money. Bernhard asks the question that if it was such an obvious use cases with large saving potentials why was it so difficult to raise such a small amount of money? For Bernhard the insurance industry sometimes makes irrational decisions when it doesn...

Science and the Sea podcast

A volcanic island in the western Pacific Ocean just can’t settle down. After not changing much for thousands of years, it’s undergone a series of eruptions in recent decades. That’s made it much bigger. And the eruptions may not be done. Nishino-shima is about 600 miles south-southeast of Tokyo. It’s the tip of a volcano that rises two miles from the ocean floor. Before 1973, the island was only a couple of thousand feet wide, and its volcanic cone rose only a few dozen feet above the waves. And the volcano probably hadn’t erupted in 10,000 years. In May 1973, though, it roared to life. It created a small second island. As the eruption continued, the islands merged. Another big eruption came along in 2013. It also formed a new island. But lava quickly paved over the whole complex. The merged island covered a square mile, and its volcanic cone towered 450 feet above it. Other eruptions followed, with another big one starting in 2020. This one was more violent than the previous ones. Columns of steam and ash rose five miles into the air. Big blocks of rock, known as “bombs,” were blasted up to a mile away. And flowing lava expanded the island even more. By August, it had grown to 1.6 square miles, with the volcano rising higher than ever. The style of this eruption suggests it could go on for a while -- keeping Nishino-shima from settling down.

Welcome to Season 10, Episode 7, of the ParentingAces Podcast. Before I go any further, please know this episode contains graphic descriptions of violence toward a female college tennis player as described by her father. Please use discretion when listening or viewing in the presence of children. I highly encourage you to watch the video version of this week's podcast which you can find here: https://youtu.be/sHaJT5IvrAc In January of 2017, Jade Lewis arrived on the LSU campus to begin her life as a college student and member of the LSU Women's Tennis Team. After sitting at the top of the Junior Rankings for her recruiting class on TennisRecruiting.net, she was offered a full scholarship and an agreement that, if she played on the LSU Women's Tennis Team for at least one semester, she could pursue a professional career then return to complete her degree at LSU at a later date at no cost to her. It was a great offer that aligned with Jade's dreams of becoming a professional tennis player. Just a few short weeks later, Jade's dream turned into a nightmare. She had formed a relationship with a member of LSU's football team, a relationship that would prove dangerous and threatening to Jade's physical and emotional health. In May of 2017, Jade reported to the LSU women's tennis athletic trainer that this football player had physically assaulted her. Presumably, Jade assumed the athletic trainer would follow NCAA protocol and file a report with his superiors as well as LSU's Title IX officer as required by law. However, it now appears that did not happen. In this week's podcast (again, I urge you to watch the video version on ParentingAces.com and read the complete show notes), you will hear Jade's father, David Lewis, explain how the violence perpetrated against Jade by the LSU football player escalated while the LSU Women's Tennis Coaches and other athletic and academic staff who knew about it sat by and did nothing to protect Jade nor punish the football player. You will hear details of the violent incidents and the frustration of a parent helpless to rescue his daughter. Below is a timeline of events as they unfolded as well as a list of media articles investigating these events. My hope is you will watch this podcast, read through the timeline and articles on ParentingAces.com, then do whatever you can to help us prevent anything remotely resembling these incidents from ever happening again. Our plan is to do another podcast with Title IX and Clery Act experts to help all of us understand the laws put in place to protect college students. That some students still fall through the cracks of these laws is inconceivable, especially when it involves violence against those same students. That the perpetrators of the violence are permitted to not only remain on campus but also continue to receive scholarship money and compete on athletic teams is appalling. That the Tennis Coaches themselves did not protect their player is unfathomable. That the Athletic Department and University employees who were aware of the abuse - and did not report it through proper channels nor ensure the safety of the victims - have not been held accountable goes against all reason. ParentingAces will continue to inform parents and is working to establish better systems to protect our children on college campuses. Note: ParentingAces reached out to the LSU Women's Tennis Coaches for comment and an opportunity to come on the podcast. The coaches did not respond. Mike and Julia Sell are still the LSU Women's Tennis Co-Head Coaches as of publication. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode 41 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is Canadian multi-medalist Olympic ice dancer and linquist Paul Poirier.  Paul Poirier started skating at age five.  In standard Canadian tradition, he was put into ice hockey along with his brothers but instead of chasing the puck, he would spin on the face-off dots.  Once he was officially enrolled in figure skating, he loved being able to do what he wanted.  From ages 9 to 18 he split his time between ice dance and men’s singles; focusing more on ice dance because his career was more established in this form and he liked the artistic freedom it provided. In July 2011, Poirier teamed up with Piper Gilles. At their first national championships together in January 2012, they won the bronze medal in ice dance but were ineligible to compete internationally that season because Gilles had competed for the United States the year prior. They debuted as a couple on the ISU Grand Prix in the Fall of 2012 and competed at their first World Championships together in 2013.In May 2013, Poirier suffered a right ankle fracture dislocation and underwent surgery to insert plates and screws. They were able to compete at the 2014 Canadian Championships, but weren’t quite physically or technically ready to take their best shot at qualifying for Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and missed the Olympic team by one spot. That fueled their fire for the next quadrennial. After winning silver at the 2014 Four Continents Championships, they had one of their strongest seasons in 2014-15, winning a pair of silver medals on the Grand Prix series and qualifying for the Grand Prix Final. They went on to post a career-best finish at the World Championships, placing sixth.Gaining a reputation as innovative skaters who try to do the opposite of what people expect, Gilles and Poirier had their partial step sequence from the 2015-16 short dance adopted as a new pattern dance by the ISU and dubbed the "Maple Leaf March". They had been struggling with that program all season, tweaking it constantly and changing the music entirely three weeks before the Worlds, where they ended up placing fifth in the short dance to put them into the final flight for the free dance. At the 2017 World Championships they recorded their second straight eighth-place finish. After winning silver at the 2018 Canadian Championships, Gilles and Poirier competed at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games where they had yet another eighth-place finish. They followed up by matching their career-best World Championship result a month later.Poirier had a prior successful partnership with Vanessa Crone that included a World Junior silver medal in 2008, a Canadian title in 2011, and competing at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.Poirier completed his Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Toronto.  Passionate about language, he continues to spend time reading and doing linguistics research.  He is currently training with Piper Gilles for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games. Also on Episode 41, Wendi and Dfernando talk about non-celebratory Valentine's Day, the release of BARB & STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR and those 1970s TV commercials featuring creepy stop-motion dolls.  And on the RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT there's the 2012 fashion documentary VERSAILLES '73: American Runway Revolution, Gen Z vs. Gen X, the hilarious Cheri Oteri and slow texters.   Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE...  and our guest Paul Poirier and his Twitter. Remember to subscribe, rate & leave a review for GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

Today I want to introduce Gretta Scholten to you all as a Time Management Coach. Gretta, a former OT, realized after a couple years of being in the workforce that she wasn’t passionate about OT despite having her masters. She went from OT to trying out photography and leaving her job, failing to keep that business going, returning to a full-time job, only to find coaching in 2019.    In May of 2020 she started her coaching business and when the pandemic hit, decided to leave her corporate job once again to go full time in her business. After the first few months and signing her first few clients she hit a lull, and month after month started to pass and she wasn’t signing more clients. She started to feel like her coaching business was crashing and burning the way her photography business had. When she came across the Anything but Average Coach Mastermind, she immediately decided to enroll and almost had to sell her car to be able to join.   Today, only 4 months into the mastermind, she has made over $20,000 when she didn’t make over 5k leading up to the mastermind. She is enjoying her life now more than ever, feeling like her business is simple and clear, and knows there is no going back to her old job because this is her lifetime career. She knows exactly how to sign clients and keep her business thriving.   On this episode, we discuss her story, how she made peace with going to school for 8 years and letting that go, how she let go of using her past evidence from her photography business to predict that her coaching business would fail, what she was struggling with when she joined the mastermind and what she learned to create $20k plus in the last 4 months.    Find out more here: https://lindseymangocoaching.com/abacoach

After leaving EMILY’s List in 2006, Anne worked as Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D-OH). She left this role in 2007 to become the Campaign Manager for Congresswoman Betsy Markey’s (D-CO) first congressional campaign – a campaign she was victorious in. After the win, Anne continued on as Congresswoman Markey’s Chief of Staff for two years, leaving the role after her reelection loss in 2011. With this stint, Anne served as COS for two members of Congress before the age of 30.In May 2011, Anne took a job at the DSCC as Deputy Political Director (where she covered all races east of Wisconsin), and in January 2013 moved into the role of Political Director, where she helped oversee Senate races in 33 states. She was in this role for two additional years, leaving in December 2014. In February 2015, Anne returned to EMILY’s List as the Vice President of Campaigns, but she only remained in this role until May, at which time she became the Executive Director for Priorities USA (Hillary Clinton’s $190 million PAC), which, at the time, was the largest in presidential campaign history. In January 2017, Anne became a Senior Advisor for Priorities USA, but only remained in this role for 3 months, as in March 2017, she became Campaign Manager for then-candidate JB Pritzker’s ultimately victorious campaign for Governor of Illinois. The campaign lasted just under two years (until January 2019), at which times Gov. Pritzker was sworn in and Anne became his Chief of Staff, a role she still holds today. She was named to Politico Playbook’s Power List “19 to Watch in 2019,” after her win in the Pritzker race. At the time, Pritzker’s gubernatorial campaign was one of the nation’s most expensive and expansive statewide campaigns and was hailed by Politico as a campaign that could have a huge influence on how politicos approached national office campaigns in 2020, due to the enormous investments in the field and in digital. In April 2020, Anne was named by Chicago Magazine as one of “The 50 Most Powerful Women in Chicago” and has been working as Governor Pritzker’s point person for the state’s coronavirus response.Follow STAFFER on Twitter • Facebook • Instagram

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career

On 22 November 2003, shortly after takeoff from Baghdad, Iraq, an Airbus A300B4-200F cargo plane, registered OO-DLL and owned by European Air Transport (doing business as DHL Express), was struck on the left wing by a surface-to-air missile while on a scheduled flight to Muharraq, Bahrain. Severe wing damage resulted in a fire and complete loss of hydraulic flight control systems. Because outboard left wing fuel tank 1A was full at takeoff, there was no fuel-air vapor explosion. Liquid jet fuel dropped away as 1A disintegrated. Inboard fuel tank 1 was pierced and leaking. Returning to Baghdad, the three-man crew made an injury-free landing of the seriously damaged A300, using differential engine thrust as the only pilot input. This is despite major damage to a wing, total loss of hydraulic control, a faster than safe landing speed and a ground path which veered off the runway surface and onto unprepared ground. Paris Match reporter Claudine Vernier-Palliez accompanied a Fedayeen unit on their strike mission against the DHL aircraft. Sara Daniel, a French weekly newsmagazine journalist, claimed receipt, from an unknown source, of a video that showed insurgents, faces concealed, firing a missile at the DHL A300. Daniel was researching a feature about Iraqi resistance groups but she denied any specific knowledge of the people who carried out the attack, despite being present at the moment of attack. The aircraft took off from Baghdad International Airport en route to Bahrain International Airport at 06:30 UTC with an experienced crew of three: two Belgians, 38-year-old Captain Éric Gennotte and 29-year-old First Officer Steeve Michielsen, and a Scotsman, 54-year-old flight engineer Mario Rofail. The captain had 3,300 total flight hours, more than half of them logged in the A300. The first officer had 1,275 hours of flight experience and the flight engineer had 13,400 hours of flight experience. To reduce exposure to ground attack, the aircraft was executing a rapid climbout. At about 8,000 feet (2,450 metres), a 9K34 Strela-3 (SA-14 Gremlin) surface-to-air missile struck the rear of the left wing between the engine and the wing tip. The warhead damaged trailing-edge surfaces of the wing structure and caused a fire. All three hydraulic systems lost pressure, and flight controls were disabled. The aircraft pitched rapidly up and down in a roller-coaster phugoid, oscillating between a nose-up and a nose-down position. As in the case of the 1989 United Airlines Flight 232 disaster in the United States, Captain Genotte could only use thrust to modify pitch, speed and altitude and vary throttles asymmetrically to control yaw and turn the aircraft. Flight engineer Mario Rofail executed a gravity drop to extend the landing gear, a procedure normally accomplished with hydraulic power. Early deployment of the gear was critical to a safe outcome because increased drag helped reduce speed and stabilize the aircraft. In about 10 minutes of experimentation, the crew learned to manage turns, climbs and descents. After a meandering trajectory, they executed a right turn and initiated a descent path to Baghdad International Airport. Because of left wing damage and fuel loss, Rofail had to monitor the engine closely – if fuel flow was lost from the left side, he would have to feed fuel from a right tank to maintain thrust. Survival was dependent on accurate power control of each jet engine. Genotte and Michielsen set up for a final approach to runway 33R. The aircraft drifted to the right of the intended course, so Genotte chose the shorter 33L runway. Visibility was excellent and the pilots managed a controlled descent. They knew that, counter-intuitively, they could not retard throttles before touchdown without risking the nose or a wing smashing disastrously into the ground. At about 400 feet (120 meters) turbulence upset the aircraft balance and the right wing dipped. With thrust adjustments, the roll was controlled but the aircraft touched down off the runway centerline. Rofail immediately deployed full reverse thrust but the aircraft veered off the paved runway. The aircraft ran through rough soft ground, throwing up a plume of sand and dragging a razor wire barrier, and halted after about 1,000 meters (3,300 ft). The Honourable Company of Air Pilots jointly honoured crewmembers with the Hugh Gordon-Burge Memorial Award. This is awarded to flight crew whose action contributed outstandingly by saving their aircraft or passengers, or made a significant contribution to future air safety. This annual award is made only if a nomination is considered to be of significant merit. The Flight Safety Foundation's FSF Professionalism Award in Flight Safety was presented to the crewmembers for their "extraordinary piloting skills in flying their aircraft to a safe landing after a missile strike following takeoff from Baghdad, Iraq". In May 2006, Captain Éric Genotte, together with Armand Jacob, an Airbus experimental test pilot, gave a presentation to the Toulouse branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society titled "Landing an A300 Successfully Without Flight Controls". In addition to severe wing and undercarriage damage, both jet engines suffered ruinous abuse by ingesting debris. The already aging aircraft did not fly again. In November 2004 the aircraft was repaired and re-registered as N1452, and put up for sale but not sold in 2005. The aircraft has since been scrapped.

In May 2019, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced formation of the Commission on Unalienable Rights, tasked with reexamining human rights in U.S. foreign policy. The very concept of “unalienable rights” proved immediately controversial with “traditional” human rights organizations, and four of them sued the State Department in federal court, claiming the Commission was unbalanced in its view on human rights. The Commission completed its work in August with a report outlining how “unalienable rights” – the rights inherent in all persons – inform the Declaration, and the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights, and how unalienable rights should inform U.S. foreign policy.Human Rights organizations continue to write that they are alarmed by the Commission, arguing that it is the basis of a “pick-and-choose” version of human rights. Mary Ann Glendon, the Commission’s chair, recently stated, in a curated discussion with Secretary Pompeo, that human rights should be independent of sovereign decision making: “[I]f there are no rights that exist independently of the sovereign, then we are in a world where the strong do what they will and the weak and the vulnerable suffer the consequences.” Are the Commission’s concerns different from the concerns that have been traditionally expressed in international human rights law, and, if so, what does the future hold for the Commission’s report?
