Welcome to HomeBrewRockStars episode #52 and where we’re talking Beer Brewed in CHI-Town, good ole Chicago, the windy city on the big lake, and one of, if not the most booming major craft brewing metropolitans in the world, definitely in the US. Chicago now ranks #1 in the country for craft breweries and it's not slowing down anytime soon. The crew, along with our Chicago beer expert, Mr. Aaron Sleger of Artele & Co. dive into what's under construction and what's trending big in the Midwest's capital city. We also do some beer tastings, of course, from a few Chicago area breweries such as Hubbard's Cave, Fresh One Hop (Mosaic) IPA, Pollyanna Pils (German Style Pilsner), Buffalo Creek Brewing's Xerxes Chocolate Bacon Stout and MARZ Chela Negra, a black Mexican lager with awesome black on black artwork (see pic below). We also listen to some samples of music from Larry Carlton/Robben Ford, Live in Tokyo, featuring jazz, blues, rock, and funk from two of the most prolific session guitarists in history. On this week's episode, we indulge in Hubbard's Cave from Niles, IL, while recapping WrestleMania 35, discussing the absence from this year's NBA Playoffs, and making predictions for the NCAA Championship game between Texas Tech and Virginia. We talk some NFL Draft too, of course. 

Talking with Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave at one of the Southeast's best beer fests Recently one of the best beer festivals in the Southeast descended on Atlanta, GA (OK, technically Chamblee).  I'm sure I'm a bit biased with it being on my home turf, but when you have nearly 70 highly regarded breweries from around the country bring out their best IPAs, Sours, Stouts, Pilsners, and Meads it's going to be a great party.  In addition to Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave, breweries like Carton, Civil Society, Horus, Old Nation, and The Answer were also pouring.  Blue Pants even had a Pilsner on slow pour, and if you're a regular listener you know we're loving that right now. Barrel Culture's head brewer Paul Wasmund joined us to talk about what's coming up at their brewery.  One of Wasmund's goals when joining Barrel Culture in late 2018 was to introduce clean beers alongside their delicious sour beers, which they launched just before the festival.  Wasmund also talks about the addition of spontaneously fermented beers and brett Saisons, and we get his thoughts on superheroes. Jerry Nelson, the founder of Hubbard's Cave and Une Année, has quite a story.  He initially launched Une Année with a focus on classic Belgian Ales, but consumers didn't want classic Belgian Ales.  Coupled with a few other hurdles, his brewery nearly went bankrupt.  Nelson decided to create a new identity in Hubbard's Cave to offer more popular beer styles.  Soon, he'll open a new brewery in Niles, IL.  In a development with a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  No kidding. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of the guys from distributor Modern Hops.  Partners Philip Barnes and Michael Lowenberg (pictured bottom center in the above photo) talk about their unique approach to beer distribution and how they made the festival happen, as well as their support for the Georgia Transplant Foundation with the event's proceeds. Crafted 1979 Bottleshop in Mokena brewed their first collaboration beer for their one year anniversary with Hubbard's Cave.  I got to accompany them for brew day along with a bunch of Crafted regulars they call Hoperatives.  I set up the podcast gear and pitched in to help can V6 and dump some grain into this big ass dessert stout.  Bananas Foster ingredients make breweries smell amazing by the way.

IL Craft Beer Week 2018 Rolls on, as I intrude on Jerry and Dave Nelson, brothers and cohorts at Une Annee and Hubbard's Cave Brewery.  These guys have quite the story to tell, from humble beginnings making european inspired beers in a dark space in Chicago(On Hubbard St of Course).  To a current space with brand new front windows, thanks to a late 90's chevy blazer, in the Northern suburb of Niles, IL.  With them continually crushing every style they venture into, see the Fresh Series (NEIPAs), Coffee and Cakes (Pastry Stout), La Grande Monde (BA Wild Ales), and Le Seu series (Stainless Wild Ales).  They have big things coming and shared a lot of good stuff on the podcast.  True artists and craftsmen.  Their beer is a must buy.
