Travis Fritts didn't set out to brew hazy IPA. In fact, the initial plan for Old Nation (https://oldnationbrewing.com) was far more conventional—brew traditional American craft beer styles like stout and pale ale, with some European standards like altbier and weizenbock, make the beers good, slap some cool branding on them, and wait for the sales to come. But it was 2015, and craft beer consumers had other ideas. To survive, Old Nation starting looking at new and evolving styles, while trying to understand (from a technical perspective) how they worked. The project ultimately led to the beer M-43, a hazy IPA that is now a mainstay of Old Nation's production and which now sees distribution to upwards of twenty states. In this episode, Fritts recounts that process of reverse engineering as they set out to understand what makes hazy IPA tick, and later touches on his approach to brewing helles. Along the way, he discusses: why biotransformation isn't all that important to the style how the lipids in oats provide an important building block for haze stability the contribution of London Ale III yeast to mouthfeel dialing in the perfect water chemistry nailing a pH of 4.4 for longer stability and to underscore fruit flavors in hops building just the right “snap” from bitterness giving each hazy beer small amounts of eccentricity through smaller left-field hop additions helles passing the "sauf test" And more. Yup. It's exactly what it sounds like. For the next 3 days we have a digital billboard on US-131 Northbound, right next passed the White Caps. Why do I spend my money this way? Since this recording I have actually bought two versions! One is very dumb and just says Local Roots... yadda yadda yadda. The other? Just our faces. Why? Great question. Aside from me never paying off my student loans due to terrible life decisions, (like starting a podcast, and buying billboards) we also break down how to treat your sweetie this V-day. Take it from us pros. :) Last but absolutely not least is our review of Old Nation's M43. One of the all time most iconic NEIPA's here in Mighigan. Also, I don't condone what that little kid called Brian on the ski hill. Follow us @thebillboardonUS131 We no longer do social media. Just new billboards every week! bye --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/localroots/support

As we close out our beer festival season coverage here on the Tap Takeover Podcast, we come now to the granddaddy of them all - The Great Taste of the Midwest! Often called one of the greatest beer events in the world, sometimes called Christmas in August, and many times simply referred to as "being welcomed home, The Great Taste in Madison, WI is put on by an army of volunteers who help the entire endeavor run smoothly. This year, we talked with a number of "rookie" brewers who were pouring at the fest for the first time, as well as some heavy hitters who have been around the fest a time or two. Old friends and new faces alike, and the Tap Takeover podcast is here to bring our listeners along for the wild ride! Plus, lots of breaking news from Old Nation, Hop & Barrel, The Brewing Projekt, 3 Sheeps, Hop Butcher, Listermann, Mobcraft, 2019 Great Taste Chairman Jason Walters, Mikerphone, Dan Carey from New Glarus, Revolution, Central Waters, Goose Island, 3 Floyds, Funk Factory Guezeria, and Great Taste Head Brewery Liaison Fred Swanson. Grab a bottle of your favorite rare beer and join us for the fun! Cheers!
Jenn fired up the DeLorean and headed to Michigan this week to chat and drink with Travis Fritts, the owner and brewer at Old Nation Brewing in Williamston! Travis shares the story of Old Nation, talks the latest brews, and then tries some great beers: M-43 New England IPA, Boss Tweed DIPA, and Brut IPA! A cool collaboration of a different sort leads the news from Food & Wine in that Dogfish Head has turned SeaQuench into a runners’ shoe with Merrell! Next up Craft Brewing Business (thanks Steve!) showcases sweet-looking beer serving tanks that help craft breweries ditch kegs to increase efficiency, safety, speed and freshness, followed by The San Francisco Examiner showing us beer politics and random brew questions. Then it’s Bloomberg reporting that South Koreans appear to have lost their taste for Japanese beer, and we close out the week with KSTU (Fox13 Salt Lake City) warning that beer is going to start disappearing (temporarily) from Utah store shelves! Due to the nature of time travel, we are carrying over last week’s #caskquiz asking “how long do you think the seltzer craze will last? Will it flame out like root beer did? Have monster growth for a few years then retain solid market share? Start slowing next year then diminishing over time?” We so love hearing from you! Talking with Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave at one of the Southeast's best beer fests Recently one of the best beer festivals in the Southeast descended on Atlanta, GA (OK, technically Chamblee). I'm sure I'm a bit biased with it being on my home turf, but when you have nearly 70 highly regarded breweries from around the country bring out their best IPAs, Sours, Stouts, Pilsners, and Meads it's going to be a great party. In addition to Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave, breweries like Carton, Civil Society, Horus, Old Nation, and The Answer were also pouring. Blue Pants even had a Pilsner on slow pour, and if you're a regular listener you know we're loving that right now. Barrel Culture's head brewer Paul Wasmund joined us to talk about what's coming up at their brewery. One of Wasmund's goals when joining Barrel Culture in late 2018 was to introduce clean beers alongside their delicious sour beers, which they launched just before the festival. Wasmund also talks about the addition of spontaneously fermented beers and brett Saisons, and we get his thoughts on superheroes. Jerry Nelson, the founder of Hubbard's Cave and Une Année, has quite a story. He initially launched Une Année with a focus on classic Belgian Ales, but consumers didn't want classic Belgian Ales. Coupled with a few other hurdles, his brewery nearly went bankrupt. Nelson decided to create a new identity in Hubbard's Cave to offer more popular beer styles. Soon, he'll open a new brewery in Niles, IL. In a development with a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. No kidding. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of the guys from distributor Modern Hops. Partners Philip Barnes and Michael Lowenberg (pictured bottom center in the above photo) talk about their unique approach to beer distribution and how they made the festival happen, as well as their support for the Georgia Transplant Foundation with the event's proceeds. When Travis Fritts and Nate Rykse started Old Nation Brewing Co. they brought 14+ years of brewing education and experience with them. They'd dedicated their lives to learning the technical aspects of brewing as well as the differences in brewing methods and ingredients across different cultures. The result is a brewery that blends these different methods and ingredients to produce unique beers. Initially, the beer they offered was "very traditional and technically accurate." Director of Growth & Strategy Mark Logusz recounts, "The beer was great, but it was not what anybody wanted to drink." With that realization, Fritts engaged the members of a local beer group to talk about new styles and after some discussion invited a few out to help with a pilot batch. The result was the first batch of M-43. Logusz sat down with us recently during M-43's Atlanta market launch. We chat about "testing the waters" in Atlanta at the Day of the Juice festival, trying to keep up with the demand for hazy IPAs, the difference in pasties and pasties, Old Nation's non-hazy offerings, and the International Festival of Lagers. On our quest to visit every brewery in Georgia in 2018 we visited Abide Brewing in Newnan and caught Line Creek Brewing Company's opening day. We also joined Wrecking Bar Brewpub to celebrate their 7th anniversary, and took a trip to SweetWater to sample their new 420 Strain G13 IPA, brewed with cannabis terpenes and hemp flavor. In the news this week Chinese-made brewing equipment gets exempted from tariffs, American aluminum price hikes raise some questions, a Swedish brewery prints tweets on beer foam, World Cup fans cause a beer shortage in Moscow, and London's Beavertown Brewery sells a minority stake to Heineken. Next week we're talking Beer and BBQ with The Beer Sommelier Matt Simpson and Smyrna Beer Market owner Brandon King. Just in time for your 4th of July planning. On todays episode I sit down with Joe from HomeGrown Brewing Company out of Oxford, MI. John and Marie Powers have spent the last year renovating the former Veterans Memorial Civic Center in downtown Oxford. Homegrown Brewing will showcase 6 flagships beers which include Cream Ale, a Belgian Wheat, an Australian-hopped IPA, a nutty Brown, a rich Stout, and an original style that John's coined a "Whamber" (a combination of Amber Ale and Wheat styles). The brewery is a family business through and through. John and Marie will keep a hands-on approach, with John Brew Master and Marie as the Interior Designer, while their children also bring their skills to the brewing endeavor. Their son Joe returned from Australia to work as Brewer and Production Manager, his wife Kate assists as Media Liasion, Jeff Powers overseas Brand Design and the front-of-house as General Manager, and the youngest sibling Katie Powers leads the Social Media program. I sat down with Joe, who was nice enough to give me some time day during brew their day to get a inside look at HomeGrown Brewing Company. Before we get to the interview lets take a look at this weeks Slurred Word Six Pack of the Week **Six Pack of the Week** YEAHHHH Thats right its another edition of the Six Pack of the Week. Remember if you would like to make an intro song for the six pack of the week post it on SoundCloud and tag it with #SixPackofTheWeek. This weeks pick is a N.E. IPA from Old Nation Brewing Co. called M-43. M-43 is the first release in Old Nation's "New Orthodox" IPA series. It is designed to accentuate the deep and complex character from the combination of Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hops. This beer has a big citrusy/tropical aroma and flavor with notes of Pineapple, Mango, and Grapefruit. The hop bitterness is not particularly intense, which lends itself to a very drinkable, juicy IPA. The beer has a very destinctive haze not from the yeast, but rather from an interplay of lipids from the malted oat and oils and acids which naturally occur in the hand selected Dry hops. The Slurred Words Six Pack of the week is sponsored by 9 & Hilton Market, located at the corner of 9 Mile Rd and Hilton Rd in Ferndale MI. With a great selection of craft beer, wine, and spirits you are for sure to find something to enjoy. So head on down to 9 & Hilton Market and tell them Bill sent you.
