Podcast 288 – Smart Branding and Apartment Density Transformed Chamblee Over the Last Decade – Van Pappas   Chamblee has rebranded, reimagined, and revitalized itself. Van Pappas shares how smart city planning and a bold branding push turned an industrial corridor into one of North DeKalb's hottest areas. The key? Apartment density, a clear identity, and big community pride. Van was there from the start, on the branding committee that helped bring the iconic red Chamblee sign to Peachtree Boulevard. He explains how signage isn't just decoration, it is declaration.   Van also dives into starting his Chamblee Area Restaurant Review Facebook Group during Covid, and growing it nearly as large as my Dunwoody version. What began as a way to support struggling restaurants became a digital town square, where locals post reviews and swap recommendations.   The Chamblee Rail Trail is more than a sidewalk. Van breaks down how the trail is expanding to connect key parts of the city and tie into a larger regional network. With plans to link Chamblee to Doraville's Assembly development, Brookhaven's greenways, and eventually the BeltLine, the trail is redefining how locals experience the city, without ever getting in a car.   Learn more about Van: oxygenfinancial.com/van-pappas   https://whatsupdunwoody.com/podcast-288-smart-branding-and-apartment-density-transformed-chamblee-over-the-last-decade-van-pappas     What's Up Dunwoody Links:

The first grant, worth $203,047, is for an inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), which can measure very small metal concentrations. This advanced equipment, rare at primarily undergraduate institutions, will attract prospective science students and provide valuable hands-on research experience. The second grant, valued at $300,000, supports the expansion of GGC's Technology Ambassador Program (TAP), aimed at increasing the number of students in IT majors, especially those underrepresented in computing. It will also create a community dedicated to promoting IT outreach and career development workshops. We'll be back in a moment   Break 3:  ESOG – Ingles 3   Story 7: Duluth football 3-0 for the first time since 1985   The Duluth football team has achieved a 3-0 start for the first time in nearly 40 years. They secured this milestone by defeating Chamblee 27-12 at North DeKalb Stadium under the leadership of head coach Cam Jones. Prior to this season, the team's best start was in 2011 when they reached 2-0, but their current 3-0 record is the program's first since 1985. Coach Jones has been instrumental in reviving the team's performance, having taken them to the state playoffs in 2021, their first appearance since 1994. Duluth displayed a strong performance against Chamblee, with key plays leading to touchdowns and a convincing victory.     We'll have final thoughts after this And now, Leah McGrath, corporate dietician at Ingles markets talks with us about foods that help with swollen feet Break 4:  Henssler 60 Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Commercial : ESOG - Elon   STORY 1 Murder   The Supreme Court of Georgia has upheld the murder conviction and life sentence of Kaylynn Shiquez Ruthenberg, a Crips gang associate who shot and killed a college student in 2015. Ruthenberg had appealed the conviction, arguing that the court erred in admitting evidence of his prior misdemeanor convictions for simple battery. The court found that Ruthenberg failed to prove the court's error. Ruthenberg and his associates lured a college student, James E. Jones, to a residence in Marietta through a Craigslist ad with the intention of robbing him. Ruthenberg shot Jones during the attempted robbery, and he later died from his injuries. Ruthenberg was convicted based on DNA evidence, fingerprints, and shell casings found in Jones' car........................……... read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: ‘Cop City'   Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has announced the indictment of 61 activists on racketeering charges for their involvement in violent protests against the construction of a police training center in Atlanta. The defendants are accused of violating the state's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) and some face additional charges of domestic terrorism, attempted arson, and money laundering. The indictment cites nine incidents of violence at the construction site and other locations, resulting in injuries to law enforcement officers and damage to property. The opposition to the training center, known as "Cop City," has also organized a voter referendum to defeat the project. Critics of the indictment argue that it infringes on the right to protest and freedom of speech.   Story 3: Death in Cobb Jail   The Cobb County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate, Raymond Marti, who died while in custody in the county jail. Marti, 60, appeared to have suffered a medical seizure, and jail and medical staff provided immediate care before transporting him to Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center. Marti had been arrested on charges of possession of cocaine and impersonating a police officer. He was found wearing clothing with "police" printed on it and carrying fake law enforcement equipment. The sheriff's office extended condolences to Marti's family. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations will investigate the death, and an autopsy will determine the cause........…..(pause)   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. She had previously purchased marijuana illegally to help her daughter, who was biting her own arm for nine months. After researching the benefits of medical cannabis, she gave her daughter cannabis oil, which helped her stop self-harming. Botanical Sciences, the company behind the dispensary, aims to provide high-quality medical cannabis therapy. Former Congressman and Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Tom Price was among those attending the event. The company will soon open dispensaries in Chamblee and Stockbridge.   STORY 5: Man Arrested   Conrad Carrington Clark, a 30-year-old man from Marietta, Georgia, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after a one-year-old child, Royal Clark, accidentally shot himself to death. The incident occurred when the child got hold of a loaded firearm left in the open by Conrad Clark at apartment 6327 of the Walton Ridge Apartment Homes in Marietta. Despite attempts at life-saving measures by Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services and the police, the child succumbed to his injuries. Conrad Clark is currently held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond, and the incident remains under investigation. Story 6:  Planning Commission The Cobb Planning Commission has expressed support for a senior housing community known as Spring Lake Village in southwest Cobb. The developer, Grace of Georgia Properties, originally sought approval for 110 homes on approximately 41 acres on Morris Road. However, the commission recommended a limit of 62 homes by a unanimous 5-0 vote. The proposed community is designed for residents aged 55 and older, addressing the growing need for senior housing options in the county, in line with projected population growth among those aged 55 and over. The development emphasizes single-story homes with smaller footprints for easier maintenance, along with amenities and green space. The commission's recommendation aims for a lower density zoning category.   We'll be back in a moment   Break:   Powers  - Ingles 2 - JRM     Story 7:  Local Theater   CenterStage North, a volunteer-run community theater in Cobb County, Georgia, faces the risk of closing its doors for the 2024 season due to issues related to staffing and scheduling at the Art Place venue. The theater relies on the Art Place for its productions and Sunday programming, which includes performances and crucial preparation time for volunteers. The venue has informed CenterStage North that it will no longer host Sunday shows due to staffing shortages. This decision threatens the theater's ability to operate effectively and generate critical revenue. CenterStage North plays a significant role in Cobb County's arts scene and local businesses, and its potential closure could have broader economic consequences. Theater officials are working with Cobb Parks officials to find a solution to keep the venue open on Sundays.   Story 8: Ribbon Cutting   Marietta city leaders celebrated the completion of renovation projects for two elementary schools, West Side Elementary and Hickory Hills Elementary, with ribbon-cutting ceremonies. West Side Elementary, established in 1949, underwent a $13.3 million renovation, including updates to the cafeteria, instructional spaces, and the front office. Hickory Hills Elementary received a $7.5 million renovation that improved areas such as the kitchen, cafeteria, windows, and front office. These renovations aim to provide state-of-the-art facilities for students while preserving the schools' historical legacies. Superintendent Grant Rivera highlighted the importance of fostering holistic learning in these updated environments. Story 8: KSU Women's Basketball Schedule   The Kennesaw State women's basketball team's 2023-24 schedule includes 14 home games and notable nonconference matchups against teams like Georgetown, Florida Atlantic, Chattanooga, and Belmont. On the road, the Owls will face tough opponents like Vanderbilt and Mississippi State from the SEC, as well as in-state rivals Georgia Tech, Mercer, and Georgia State. Head Coach Octavia Blue expressed excitement about the challenging nonconference schedule, emphasizing the team's determination to improve and compete with the best. The season kicks off with a game against Vanderbilt on November 6, followed by a home opener against Cobb County rival Life on November 10, and in-state matchups with Georgia State and Georgia Tech in mid-November.   …Back with final thoughts after   Break:   - Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. With a score of 99.95 out of 100, GSMST also ranked 19th nationally and 10th among STEM schools in the United States. The evaluation process considers factors like college readiness, reading and math proficiency, graduation rates, and more. The ranking aims to help parents ensure their children are in an environment conducive to their success. Columbus High, Davidson Magnet School, and DeKalb School of the Arts followed as other top-ranking schools in Georgia.       Story 3: grid The aging U.S. electric grid requires significant new transmission capacity, but building new lines can take a decade or more due to various challenges. Grid-enhancing technologies (GETs), such as sensors, power-flow devices, and software, aim to optimize the existing grid and potentially reduce the need for new infrastructure. While GETs have been embraced globally, their adoption has been slower in the U.S. due to financial incentives for utilities to build capital-intensive projects and the need for further validation, industry standards, and security considerations. Some states and FERC have begun promoting GETs to enhance grid efficiency and reduce congestion costs. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Lowder will be part of the UGA Extension Viticulture Team, focusing on integrated pest management approaches and proactive disease-resistant cultivar selection. Georgia's wine grape production and tourism-related revenue contributed $5.28 billion to the state's economy in 2022.   Story 5: seckinger   The newly established Seckinger Athletic Association is organizing "SKGAA Night at the Ballpark" at Coolray Field for the Gwinnett Stripers' game against the Durham Bulls on September 22nd.
