From railroad stop to global corridor, Chamblee has lived a lot of lives in just over a century. This week, we trace its evolution from land once inhabited by the Muscogee people, to a tiny rail junction, to a booming military town during World War I with the rise of Camp Gordon. Along the way, we uncover the surprising origin of Chamblee's name, and follow its shifts through dairy farms, aviation history at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, and postwar suburban growth. By the late 20th century, Buford Highway transforms into an international lifeline—making modern Chamblee one of the most diverse and dynamic communities in the Southeast. Black mothers and other women of color continue to face serious health disparities during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Georgia has one of the highest Black maternal mortality rates in the nation. To bring awareness and work towards solutions, Black Mamas Matter Alliance is hosting the 9th annual Black Maternal Health Week. The event runs through April 11–17, and this year’s theme is "Rooted in Joy & Justice." On today’s “Closer Look,” we hear from Angela Aina, the co-founder and executive director of the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. Then, Flock Safety, an Atlanta-based surveillance company, is facing increasing community pushback as it secures contracts with law enforcement agencies across the country. Flock cameras can be found across metro Atlanta – including in Chamblee, where the police department recently opened its Real-Time Crime Center. Among Flock’s loudest critics is Benn Jordan, who worked with technology experts and journalists to expose security vulnerabilities. Plus, Kathleen Bertrand, a celebrated Atlanta jazz vocalist and writer, recently became the focus of study for a group of Clark Atlanta University music students. Alongside her longtime musical director, Phil Davis—who also chairs the university’s music department—Bertrand will be featured in CAU’s Artist Showcase. On this edition of “Closer Look,” listen as they discuss this special event and their love of music. The CAU Jazztet Artist Showcase is free and will take place on April 16 at 7 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Legal scholar Elizabeth Chamblee Burch focuses on three women with mesh implants who were targeted, manipulated, and violated—at their own expense. Through the searing stories of Sharon Gore, Barbara Shepard, and Jerri Plummer—middle-aged women separated by geography, education, and socioeconomic factors—Burch sheds light on not only the injustices of mass torts, which she describes as “personal-injury litigation on steroids,” but also the indignities endemic in women's healthcare.  Drawing on more than 150 interviews conducted over two years, backed by 209,000 pages of documentation, THE PAIN BROKERS is at once a critical work of public service journalism and a real-life thriller. As Burch unfolds each level of the scheme, readers meet: Vincent Chhabra, a Versace-clad entrepreneur and architect of Alpha Law, LLC—which, despite its name and partnerships with some actual lawyers, was a call center. Headquartered at 1000 Corporate Drive in south Florida, Alpha Law employed nearly two hundred operators in headsets who capitalized on patients' private medical records, obtained through a data breach in India, to make unsolicited calls to vulnerable women with mesh implants, including Sharon, Barbara, and Jerri.      Blake Barber, a hulking ex-paralegal with a flamingo pink goatee who turned women's medical fears into cash for third-party funders by orchestrating a ruthless “concierge service” that flew terrified patients to Florida chop shops to have their mesh removed. Dr. Christopher Walker, a Jamaican-born urogynecologist known by his Instagram handle @Dr.Downtown who, after losing his savings in a Ponzi scheme, went from inserting mesh to extracting it at breakneck speed for seven times his normal fee—a feat made possible by refusing to accept women's insurance and forcing them to sign liens against their future settlement proceeds.  J.R. In this opening episode of the Restorative Pedagogies series, Claire de Mezerville López and Nikki Chamblee to the Restorative Works! Podcast to explore what it means to approach teaching through a restorative practices lens.  Moving beyond the idea of restorative practices as solely relational or disciplinary tools, Claire and Nikki reflect on pedagogy as a human-centered practice—one that honors voice, agency, belonging, and emotional safety as foundations for learning. Drawing on research, classroom experience, and theory, they discuss how integrating restorative practices into curriculum planning can create conditions where mistakes are welcomed as part of growth, creativity is nurtured, and students can remain engaged even when learning feels challenging. Together, they examine how restorative practices support high academic expectations without reverting to fear-based or punitive approaches, and how educators can intentionally embed relational processes into content instruction across subject areas. This episode sets the stage for the series by inviting listeners to rethink what effective teaching looks like when dignity, connection, and accountability are held together. Nikki Chamblee, Ph.D., has been an educator for over 19 years. She currently serves as an Instructor and Implementation Coach for the IIRP, providing training and coaching to support districts in effectively planning implementation. Her area of focus is the interweaving of restorative practices with other district initiatives. She is licensed in New York and Texas in the areas of English Language Arts, Special Education, and English as a Second Language. From 2017 - 2022, she served as a Coordinator of Restorative Practices for two districts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She received Tier 1 and Tier 2 training in restorative practices from the Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility and restorative discipline training from the Texas Education Agency. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Restorative Practices from the IIRP.   Tune in to explore how integrating restorative practices into lesson plans can be a game-changer for your classroom.

Van Pappas shares how smart city planning and a bold branding push turned an industrial corridor into one of North DeKalb's hottest areas. The key? Apartment density, a clear identity, and big community pride. Van was there from the start, on the branding committee that helped bring the iconic red Chamblee sign to Peachtree Boulevard. He explains how signage isn't just decoration, it is declaration.   Van also dives into starting his Chamblee Area Restaurant Review Facebook Group during Covid, and growing it nearly as large as my Dunwoody version. What began as a way to support struggling restaurants became a digital town square, where locals post reviews and swap recommendations.   The Chamblee Rail Trail is more than a sidewalk. Van breaks down how the trail is expanding to connect key parts of the city and tie into a larger regional network. With plans to link Chamblee to Doraville's Assembly development, Brookhaven's greenways, and eventually the BeltLine, the trail is redefining how locals experience the city, without ever getting in a car.   Learn more about Van: oxygenfinancial.com/van-pappas   https://whatsupdunwoody.com/podcast-288-smart-branding-and-apartment-density-transformed-chamblee-over-the-last-decade-van-pappas     What's Up Dunwoody Links:
