#162 Jim Kanter knows a thing or two about selling and marketing beer and spirits. That's because he started off driving a beer truck as a summer job. Tell me, does a summer job get any better?   From there, Kanter went on an 18-year tear at MillerCoors moving all the way up to General Manager.    Then, he went in a different direction. Kanter pivots and joins a small but growing distillery called Central Standard.    Today, Central Standard is one of the fastest-growing spirits brands in the Midwest!    ✅ How did Kanter and the team do it?  ✅ What's it like marketing a spirits brand?  ✅ How do you stand out in a crowded space?    All of these questions and more – answered here. Have a listen   Show highlights:   00:00–00:04 – Intro & Jim's early start: from beer truck summers to PR with the Milwaukee Brewers. 00:04–00:13 – 18 years at MillerCoors: navigating roles, M&A chaos, and unifying sales/marketing ops. 00:13–00:18 – Jumping into Central Standard: the startup leap and learning curve. 00:18–00:21 – What is Central Standard? Overview of the distillery and key product lineup. 00:21–00:26 – What a Chief Commercial Officer actually does in a small spirits brand. 00:26–00:30 – Big company vs. small startup: “You think you know... then the bottle caps run out.” 00:30–00:36 – Breaking into retail: the hard truth about shelf space, distributors, and awareness. 00:36–00:41 – The power of product focus: “You can't launch 30 SKUs. Pick your winners.” 00:41–00:46 – Branding that works: the origin of Central Standard's rugged Midwestern visual identity. 00:46–00:51 – Marketing consistency: “We get bored way before the customer does.” 00:51–00:55 – Spirits market overview: who's growing, who's hurting, and why brandy's having a moment. 00:55–01:03 – Canned cocktail origin story: a shuttle ride, a few beers, and a big bet with Liney's. 01:03–01:10 – Marketing strategy on a budget: event play, influencer work, scarcity as a tool. 01:10–01:14 – Cracking into events like Summerfest: strategy, speed, and solving event organizer problems. 01:14–01:18 – Jim on networking: authenticity, saying yes, and getting uncomfortable on purpose. 01:18–01:20 – Final thoughts: Central Standard's growth, airport bar launch, and what's next. Spring has sprung and everything is covered in pollenWe attended Little Beer Fest in Duluth, GA last weekend and the Atlanta area set a record for pollen count.  The sky was a bit yellow-green hazy.  Madness.  The sneezes and itchy eyes didn't keep us from enjoying a lot of great beers, though. You ever think about the various "eras" of craft beer?  The IBU wars, the race to be the most sour, Haze Craze.  We ponder what the various eras have been and what may be next. The tariffs we've been talking about have finally rolled out, so we share the latest on those.  It's going to hit everything.  Buckle up.Some big news on the buyout front this week with Anderson Valley and Great Divide being acquired.  Locally, our beloved Terrapin Brewpub at Truist Park is now a Blue Moon brewpub.  Since Terrapin was sold and Miller-Coors has rights to beer at the stadium it was kind of expected this might happen. In other news a thirsty gentleman has invented a self-cooling beer can and we find out what each generation's favorite beers are. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Mikey's nearly two-decade skateboarding career, highlighted by sponsorships, the X Games, and viral skate videos, taught him resilience, problem-solving, and the value of seeing obstacles as opportunities. As his skating career wound down, Mikey began laying the foundation for life after sports by co-founding Saint Archer Brewing Company, which was later sold to MillerCoors for over $35 million. This pivotal moment allowed Mikey to achieve financial freedom at 33 and dive headfirst into real estate. In 2018, he launched Commune Capital, which now manages over $200 million in real estate assets, including apartment complexes and self-storage facilities. Mikey shares how his experiences in skateboarding and business fueled his passion for educating others about financial literacy and the FIRE movement. We also explore his work on the Thousand Oaks City Council, his vision for empowering others to prepare for life beyond their careers, and how resilience and adaptability have been key to his success. This is an inspiring conversation about perseverance, building wealth with purpose, and leveraging challenges to create meaningful impact. If you've enjoyed an American craft beer over the last few decades, you've benefited from the efforts of our guest today. Keith Villa founded Blue Moon Brewing Company for Miller Coors back in 1995, which would of course become an iconic brand that helped usher in a new era of craft beer that we know today. His trailblazing efforts in craft beer didn't stop there, though, as he would start Ceria Brewing in 2018. Ceria is known for two things. One, launching a very early-stage, cannabis-infused beer. When they had to pivot due to being so early to market, they currently brew one of, if not the only, completely zero-proof beers made in the U.S. In our conversation we talk about what microbrewing looked like in the mid 90s, before fast-forwarding to the last decade in brewing. Jonah Smith joined IBM in 2023 as Vice President, Environmental Social Governance Strategy and Programs.  In addition to leading global ESG strategy, goals, stakeholder engagement, reporting and governance, Jonah's responsibilities also entail the development and implementation of environmental social innovation programs such as the IBM Sustainability Accelerator.  Prior to IBM, Jonah led ESG at Kraft Heinz as its Global Head of Environmental Social Governance & President of the Kraft Heinz Foundation.  Prior to Kraft Heinz Jonah held similar roles at Grainger and MillerCoors, has done stints in socially responsible investing, teaching sustainability at the university level, and served as the Sustainable Business Director at a non-profit, the Alliance for the Great Lakes.  Jonah's career spans about two decades in sustainability, CSR/ESG. Jonah holds an MBA in Sustainable Business from Pinchot University (formerly Bainbridge Graduate Institute).  In addition, Jonah holds a MS in Conservation Biology & Ecosystem Management, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Latin American & Caribbean Studies, and finally a BA in English Literature, all from the University of Michigan.  While in graduate school at what is now SEAS (formerly SNRE), Jonah's 1.5 years Master's opus researched and prescribed proper valuation of water resources and sustainability in Brazil.   Jonah Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: IBM's study: Beyond Checking the Box Key characteristics of companies that effectively embed sustainability across the organization  Data useability as a key challenge to sustainable business value IBM's Sustainability Accelerator Program Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Jonah's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  Figure out what your sweet spot is in terms of what's meaningful to you. What are your passions? What are you most passionate about? Really be honest with yourself about that. Don't just look at what's the biggest paycheck or whatever else it may be, but look at what you're most passionate about and what your day-to-day life will be like doing that work. We're all the most effective when we're doing things that are really meaningful to us, right? I love, love, love the work that I do. We're all gonna have challenges every day in our work, but if you really love and feel passionate about that work, it's easier to get over those challenges. Have an honest self-reflection with yourself on that. And then envision yourself how you're going to retire and build a pathway backwards from that retirement space. Talk to people who are in a similar role at a similar company that you'd like to be at, or a nonprofit, if it's a nonprofit or if it's with the government, whatever it may be. Do that networking. Then walk yourself all the way back and then take a stair step ladder in order to achieve what you just walked out of.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  I'm really excited about the potential of AI to really help accelerate our ability to mitigate the impacts of climate change, both in terms of tracking, reporting it, as well as actually helping through initiatives like I just mentioned with our Sustainability Accelerator Program, for example. We're past the tipping point. The time is yesterday in terms of how we need to act on this stuff. We all need to do our part. So it really excites me. That's why I'm at IBM. It really excites me when I think about IBM's ability to really help the world achieve this. If everyone can get as excited as I am about that, and we start acting on that excitement, I think we will be in a much better space.  What is one book you'd recommend Sustainability Leaders Read?  If I had to just pick out one, I might go back to my roots a little bit on this one. The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawkin was a book when I was in grad school that was often referred to. There's so many different books we're always learning new things and it's always good to keep your finger on the pulse of whatever's going on and present time. But also sometimes it's good to look back at where we were. That book does a great job of making connections in a way that I think takes us back to the roots of our planet's ecosystem services, the connection between biodiversity and nature and ecosystem. I think it really would help build a foundation for folks to then really be able to apply with better intention in today's modern world, what's going on and all the impacts and where we need to get back to or where we need to go to.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  Our IBM Envizi tool. It's super powerful, super comprehensive. I wish I had it throughout my career at other companies that I've worked at as we struggled with data and on all sorts of different automating and definition parameters and transparency and scope, and being able to connect to different platforms and disclosure reporting and so forth. So I would say our Envizi software. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you, Jonah, and the work being done at IBM?  You could go to my LinkedIn profile, Jonah Smith. For IBM, it's really simple: ibm.com/impact. There's so much great information on our website. You can find our most recent impact report as well as previous impact reports. You can find ESG policies and links to other parts of our website if you want to do a deep dive into our environmental goals, or our upskilling and technology. IBM has goals to skill 30 million people by 2030. All of our different areas that we're operating in, that's a great initial place to scope it out.

Pasteurization is a method of stabilizing beer through heat.  Although some people think pasteurization can negatively affect the flavor of beer, when used properly, pasteurization stabilizes and preserves flavors and gives brewers flexibility in the brewing process. And with the rise in popularity of non-alcoholic beer, which has less inherent preservative qualities, pasteurization not only keeps flavors stable, but is necessary to keep those beers free from pathogens. This episode's guest: Keith Villa, Ph.D., is a trailblazer in the beer and cannabis industries; and brewmaster and co-founder of Colorado-based CERIA Brewing Company, dedicated to brewing only alcohol-free beers. After earning his PhD in brewing from the University of Brussels in Belgium in the early 1990's, an honor only a handful of brewers have achieved, Keith returned to the states with the idea of crafting beers inspired by Belgian styles, but with a twist.  He then began his 32-year career as founder and head brewmaster at Blue Moon Brewing Company, an operating unit of MillerCoors.  Since retiring from Blue Moon, this beer doctor developed a patented brewing method to produce great tasting alcohol-free craft beers; written a book titled Brewing with Cannabis, Using THC and CBD in Beer; and continues to speak worldwide as an expert in both the beer and cannabis industries. This Episode is Sponsored by:Malteurop Malting CompanyMalteurop Malting Company (MMC) is based in North America—specializing in growing and producing quality malts for the craft beer and distilling industries. In episode 105 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we return to a topic that most of us likely love (I know I do): food. Trail food is something that brings me a lot of joy when I'm out in the backcountry, and it is also something that can quickly boost my morale as I hike. It gives me something to look forward to on those final miles before I reach camp and is a place to build connection and community in many other settings. Still, camp food can be a real downer sometimes. I know that I've made mistakes in camp meals by not packing the right combination of things or not trying a recipe before I am out and being disappointed. Then, there's always a chance you're relying heavily on pre-made backpacking meals that don't fit the bill. So, when I had a chance to sit down and chat with a chef with the goal of revitalizing and reinventing the way we see food outdoors, I had to jump on it. Chef Corso is the head chef and founder of Outdoor Eats. A company and community focused on elevating the outdoor food experience through fast, easy, tasty recipes, cookbooks, and meal plans. He's a classically trained chef training at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley and continued schooling in Northern Italy. He has a layered culinary history ranging from a research chef testing and developing new food products for companies like General Mills, Miller Coors, Martinelli's, and more, as well as extensive experience as a head chef and culinary trainer for multiple brands in Seattle, WA training national and international teams. In his downtime away from the kitchen, he enjoyed hiking and backpacking in the Olympic and North Cascades NPs and noticed that most people were just boiling water and adding it to a bag or eating bars and jerky for days on end. He started testing recipes with the backpacker in mind, and the results changed his whole experience to better compliment the outdoors. Chef Corso and Outdoor Eats are here to share that elevated experience. Sandwiches.  So hot right now.  A chart circulated around Twitter claiming to list the World's best sandwiches.  We disagree with some of the answers, and so did many others, so we discuss (gripe) about on the show this week. Big news from Heineken this week and their promised exit from the Russian market.  Well, they're not gone yet.  Also big news that Bill Gates just snagged a huge Stake in the company. In our Big Beer Just Can't Catch a Break series we discuss drama from Miller-Coors and some whining from AB-InBev about watery beer. And from the world of NA beers, Athletic is launching a pre-workout brew.  NA for pre-workout and all the ABVs afterward.  On that note, should you drink beer every day?  If so, how much.  We'll tell you what happens to your body if you're a daily drinker. President Carter is in the news as his health is declining and he's entered hospice.  Beer drinkers and non-beer drinkers alike have been talking about him this week.  He was instrumental in getting the beer boom started in the US by signing legislation making it legal.  But, homebrewing was a side effect and we have Senator Alan Cranston to thank for adding it to the bill. Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens Five Trail Blended American Whiskey, the first full-strength spirit from the iconic Molson Coors Beverage Company, announces the release of its limited Batch 002 blend. Bottled at 95 proof, the new expression is sold for an SRP of $59.99 and is currently available in markets within Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Nevada, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. Supporting the evolution of Molson Coors as a beverage company, Five Trail debuted in September 2021 with Batch 001 – an intentional blend of 4-Year Colorado single malt, 4-Year Kentucky four grain bourbon, 4-Year Indiana wheated bourbon and 13-Year Kentucky bourbon, cut to proof with pure Rocky Mountain Water. It was bottled in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Company and received numerous accolades and awards, including Double Gold at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Platinum Best of Class in the SIP Awards and Double Platinum in the 2022 Ascot Awards. The Batch 002 blend is also bottled in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Company but replaces the 4-Year Colorado single malt with 6-Year and the 13-Year Kentucky bourbon with 12-Year. The result is a golden amber whiskey with an aroma of sweet caramel, pecans, and biscuit with hints of wood sugar, caramel, apple, white cherry, smoke, ginger, and allspice on the palate. The finish is easy going and lingering with notes of oak, ginger, and nutty balance. “The response to Five Trail has been overwhelming,” said David Coors, Vice President of Next Generation Beverages at Molson Coors. “Our team really loved the flavor profile we came up with for the inaugural release and wanted to keep Batch 002 in this same vein. Batch 002 is an homage to our debut expression, but with a few nuances stemming from the thoughtfully selected mixture of age statements, creating a complex and layered flavor profile. I hope whiskey drinkers and spirits enthusiasts will enjoy this release as much as the first, if not more so.” Along with Batch 002, Five Trail also launched the below expressions, available in limited quantities within the brand's eight distribution markets: Barrel Proof: Barrel Proof takes the Batch 002 blend and bottles it at 119 proof. A whiff unlocks aromas of cinnamon brioche, milk chocolate, ginger, caramel apple, and vanilla pudding. A sip features notes of caramel, marshmallow, and candied dates, with ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper on the end, finishing with caramel, ginger, oak tannin, and campfire smoke. Cask Finish Series: Bottled at 95 proof, it's crafted from a blend of 4-Year Indiana wheated bourbon, 4-Year Kentucky four grain bourbon, 4-Year Colorado single malt and 7-year Indiana rye. The whiskeys are rested in Imperial Porter Barrels from the AC Golden Brewing Company in Golden, Colorado and cut to proof with Rocky Mountain Water. It features notes of biscuit, roasted nuts, and caramel on the nose with hints of toffee, vanilla pudding, apple, candied date, almond, oak, black tea, and cinnamon crumb cake on the palate. Expect a finish of nuts, delicate ginger, and cinnamon. Small Batch Blend: The Small Batch is blended from a base of 4-Year Indiana wheated bourbon, 4-Year Kentucky four grain bourbon, and 8-Year Colorado single malt whiskey with 17-Year Tennessee whiskey. Honey amber in color, there are notes of warm baked bread, slight citrus, ginger, white pepper, and cardamom on the nose with honeyed granola, creamy vanilla, orange marmalade, oak, and honeysuckle with a bit of paprika on the palate. The finish is warm and powerful ginger and oak melded with embers of smoky overlay. It's bottled at 95 proof. “We're thrilled to continue Five Trail's journey with these new expressions,” said Kim Fox, Marketing Manager – Wine & Spirits. “Whether you're a whiskey novice looking for a flavorful bottle or a whiskey connoisseur looking to expand your cask strength collection, we truly have something to satisfy everyone. We're excited to keep experimenting and expanding our footprint in whiskey and beyond.” About Five Trail Blended American Whiskey Five Trail marries Colorado provenance with the innovative distillation techniques of pioneering distillers in Kentucky and Indiana to produce this golden amber whiskey, using Coors malt from their brewhouse and the purest water in America, straight from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Five Trail is founded in an Unbroken Spirit, spanning a journey that started 150 years ago, with trials, tribulations and an enduring frontier spirit. He learned how to get sponsors to pay for his travel to skate competitions around the world and he was starting to earn an income. His mother introduced him to someone to help him build a financial plan. Now with 50% new footage! During Super Bowl LIII in 2019, Bud Light launched a new advertising strategy that was... unconventional, even for them. Instead of frogs or "wazzap" guys or silly superstitions, this campaign focused on attacking Bud Light's rivals for using corn syrup to brew their beers. Stranger still, outside observers noted that the beer giant borrowed other conventions from the world of political mudslinging, twisting facts, doubling down on vague talking points and attempting to build a consensus against Miller Lite and Coors Light. But the brewing barons at Anheuser-Busch didn't count on the little guys... specifically, members of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) who took exception to the attacks and rallied to the defense of MillerCoors. We've remastered this classic Lead Balloon episode to add the perspective of new key players, including: MillerCoors (now called Molson Coors) Chief Communications Officer Adam Collins NCGA CEO Jon Doggett NCGA past president Kevin Ross Additionally, we've refined the original storytelling with NCGA VP of communications Neil Caskey, Brewers Association spokesman Paul Gatza, and friend-of-the-show Kyle Brown. Together, we'll break down the ultimate failures of "the Corn Syrup Wars," untwist the misleading claims made in Bud Light's ads, and detail the long-term ramifications for all the brands involved.
