Google doc link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a1R8sn7bpSuyh9pfHMPvolLJUMxt1kCKsmP7_fqo6iw/edit?usp=sharing Notes: June 11, 2023 by: Matt Monk-”The World is Redeemed, Don't We Experience It?” Source Text: II Thes. 1:11-12 (from the English Standard Version). 11 To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ Two Big Ideas: We live in a redeemed world, but people (us) fail to see/believe it is so. Christ is in us, giving us the power and authority to take care of #1. Questions for Application to Consider and to Pray About: How can I? -Walk in a manner worthy of my calling and Christ's calling? -Better see Christ in me and me in Him? ** “It's not about what you can do for God, but what God has done for you.” Big Idea #1: We live in a redeemed world, but people (us) fail to see or believe it is so. -Genesis 3: What/Who does God curse after the fall? -II Thes. 1:10: when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed (ESV) -According to v. 10, where is Christ and what is His plan to redeem the world? -Romans 5:12, 18-19: 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. -If Christ dealt with sin once and for all on the cross…why do we still struggle? **II Thes. 1:11: What gives us the power for good works and faith? What happens if we attempt to redeem things but do it from the wrong source? Rom. 1:20-21-20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Big Idea #2: Christ is in us, giving us the power and authority to take care of #1. **II Thes. 1:12, Where/How is Christ glorified?... John 17:4-5, 21-23: 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. John 14:20: 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
The prophetic Spirit of Christ moved through the Jewish prophets testifying of a better covenant that would be inclusive of Jews and Gentiles. As in the Old Covenant (Lev 26), the Lamb of God compelled natural Israel to repent of her transgressions (covenant breaking) or they would perish. In the Book of Revelation, Christ compelled six of the seven churches to repent of their transgressions or they would likewise perish. Christ in the last days will judge the sinner and the transgressor (II Thes 1:7,8). This episode examines the Kingdom Covenant and transgressors in relation to the prophetic word of God through his prophets. Jesus said 8 times (!) in John 15 that He wants us to bear fruit. But what does that even mean? In EP112 we said that abiding is all the stuff that no one sees. Well, fruit is the stuff EVERYONE sees (and feels, and tastes, and smells) coming from you. Welcome to my Summer Replay Series! I'm rerunning a series that first aired in Feb-March 2020 on Abiding in Christ (John 15). This replay series begins with EP108 and this is Part 6--the final episode in the Abide series. Be sure to go back and listen from the beginning. The main point: Real fruit is the natural and inevitable outgrowth of a branch that is abiding in the Vine and is regularly and properly pruned by The Vinedresser. Fake Fruit: 1. Financial or Worldly Success 2. Flashy Ministry, Big Following, Popularity 3. Religiously following all the laws and rules of your Christian denomination 4. Perpetual self-improvement *We should not become professional fruit inspectors except: when we feed on other people's spiritual fruit or PUT OUR CHILDREN UNDER THE CARE OF SOMEONE. Then get all up in that fruit and fully inspect it! Real Fruit: 1. Leading people to Christ 2. Love 3. Good Works 4. Virtues of Character 5. Hearing God's voice 6. Answered prayer Don't focus on the fruit. Focus on ABIDING in Christ. Keep that connection intact and free-flowing. Submit to the pruning. The fruit WILL come. Scriptures I reference in this episode: Matthew 23:27-28 Matthew 12:33 John 15:1-17 John 13:34-35 Ephesians 2:10 James2:14-16 Colossians 1:9-12 Galatians 5:22-23 Ephesians 5:8-11 Philippians 1:9-11 Jeremiah 17:7-8 I John:3-10 II Thes 1:3 LINKS I bought my "abide" bracelet here. Theology of Holiness (Part 2) Pastor Austin Gilliland John 6:44, II Thes. 2:13, Eph. 2:11-22
This is the third sermon in this series. Turn your bibles to II Thes. 2:13 and follow along.
Pastor Carol Haupu Let no one deceive or beguile you in any way, for that day will not come except the [a]apostasy comes first [unless the predicted great [b]falling away of those who have professed to be Christians has come], and the man of lawlessness (sin) is revealed, who is the son of doom (of perdition), Who opposes and exalts himself so proudly and insolently against and over all that is called God or that is worshiped, [even to his actually] taking his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming that he himself is God. The Gift of the Holy Spirit Series: Bold Witness Date: May 12, 2019 Scripture: Acts 1:1-9 Big Idea: To be bold and effective in your witness wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit to fill you. Introduction Jesus’ last words: “Its all about me” (1-11) “Wait for what my Father promised” (4) What did He promise? He promised that a new comforter would come He promised that the Holy Spirit would remind and teach everything that Jesus already did He promised that that we would be baptized by the Holy Spirit Why did Christ know they needed this? The church exploded in growth They were put in tremendous leadership pressure They would be persecuted Why did Jesus ask them to wait? Perhaps because He knew the value of resting, praying, and anticipating Perhaps He knew His disciples habit of planning, preparing and pushing ahead Perhaps He knew that what was about to happen in 10 days was going to rock their world!— “I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit” (5) Why does God gift us with the Holy Spirit? To give assurance of acceptance by God (Acts 15:8) To convict the world of sin (Acts 2:37) To provide spiritual gifts (I Cor. 12) To work miracles, signs and wonders (Rom. 15:18-19) To give boldness in preaching and witnessing (Acts. 1:8) To cultivate the fruit of the Spirit (Rom. 14:17) To sanctify the believer (II Thes. 2:13) Jesus knew the disciples needed this new relationship with the Holy Spirit The disciples would come into a new and personal relationship with the Holy Spirit The disciples would be cleansed and purified by the Holy Spirit The disciples would become more effective in ministry “Focus on what you know, not on what you don’t” (6) Focus on God’s priorities, not yours Focus on what you understand, not what you don’t Conclusion
In tonight’s Bible study, Jon Brueggemann teaches on apostasy. He clearly defines it and gives many Biblical examples. This is a powerful study that is packed with excellent reminders and mental checks. Jon gives the warning of how some churches have fallen into the trap of picking and choosing what they want to believe regarding God’s Word. What does your church believe? We hope you enjoy this Bible study and have a blessed week!
