Today we have a fascinating conversation with Christian ethicist David Gushee about the moral teachings of Jesus. Gushee has spent decades wrestling with how to faithfully apply Jesus' radical vision for the kingdom of God in our modern context. What struck me most in our discussion was Gushee's insistence that Jesus' ethics are not merely aspirational, but profoundly subversive to the status quo. Jesus challenges our assumptions about power, wealth, tradition, and social status - calling us to a radical reorientation of our values and priorities. Gushee highlights key themes like Jesus' concern for the marginalized, his critique of religious and cultural traditions that exclude, and his vision of freedom that is not beholden to the expectations of others. It's a challenging message, but one that Gushee believes the church desperately needs to recover if we are to faithfully follow in the way of Jesus. This is a conversation that will make you think deeply about what it means to live as a disciple of Christ in our modern world. Gushee doesn't offer easy answers, but he compellingly lays out Jesus' moral vision and invites us to wrestle with its radical implications. I found it both inspiring and convicting - I hope you will as well.Rev. Prof. Dr. David P. Gushee (PhD, Union Theological Seminary, New York) is Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University, and Chair of Christian Social Ethics at Vrije Universiteit (“Free University”) Amsterdam, and Senior Research Fellow, International Baptist Theological Study Centre.Gushee is the elected Past-President of both the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Christian Ethics, signaling his role as one of America's leading Christian ethicists. How do we protect it from reactionary authoritarian Christianity? On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Americans stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of their political opponent's election. At the forefront were Christians claiming to act in the name of Jesus Christ and his supposed representative on earth, Donald Trump. How can this have happened? David P. Gushee tackles the question in this timely work of Christian political ethics. Gushee calls us to preserve democratic norms, including constitutional government, the rule of law, and equal rights for all, even as many Christians take a reactionary and antidemocratic stance. He analyzes where Christians have discarded their commitment to democracy and bought into authoritarianism in the US and several other countries, both historically and today. He urgently argues that to defend against reactionary and authoritarian Christians, we must revive and draw on our hard-won traditions of congregational democracy, dissident Black Christian politics, and covenantal theology. Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies makes a robust case for the defense of democracy from its enemies—including Christians—arguing for a renewed commitment to democracy on the part of Christians, by drawing on our own best traditions, not succumbing to mere secular liberalism. Any concerned Christian will leave this audio with eyes wide open to the dangers of our current form of political engagement. Listeners will gain insight into what democracy is truly meant to be and why Christians once supported it wholeheartedly—and should do so again.(*as an Amazon affiliate, I receive a small commission from purchases made)✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:- preacherboyspodcast.com- https://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/- https://twitter.com/preacherboysdoc- https://www.instagram.com/preacherboysdoc/To connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/preacher-boys-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Episode SummaryAuthoritarianism is on the rise all across the world. Here in America, the leading proponents of anti-democratic ideology are evangelical Christians who have been swept up in the cult of Donald Trump. Driven by a dominator theology and good old-fashioned white supremacy, conservative Christians can be counted on as the leading supporters of dictatorial politics. As Dr. David Gushee writes in his book Defending Democracy From It's Christian Enemies, “Our current democratic crisis reveals a need to revisit the very meaning of democracy…Concerned citizens should care about the direction of movement in their own country. Ours is trending in a bad direction.”And that trend is leading many Christians to embrace what Gushee describes as “Nazified Christianity.” Since the 1960's, much of American public life has been moving toward greater freedoms, greater inclusivity, greater access to power, self-determination, and wealth for underrepresented populations. The Civil Rights Movement, feminist movement, sexual revolution, LGBTQIA movement, and the #METOO Movement have leveled the playing field. And who does that threaten? White, male Christians who are reacting to those new freedoms with violence and extremism. So, how do we work to not only save our democracy from it's Christian enemies, but to awaken our friends and family who have been taken captive by the rise of totalitarianism and the despotism of the Republican Party? This scholarly, yet practical conversation provides you with the resources and tools to have transformational conversations about the politics of Jesus as well as helping to equip you with the action-steps to save democracy during this political season. Is the idea that Grace extends to all people offensive to Christians that shouldn't be. And most people who claim to be Christian would say they believe that it isn't offensive. But my guest today, the Reverend Professor David p Gushy, says It seems difficult in the actions of American Christ. To see a willingness to risk and to suffer for the marginalized and standing with them and extending grace to all cuz she says the problem in that though is not Jesus. The problem is with the Christian religion in this season. I'm excited to talk to my guest about this subject today. David Gushee. Rev. Prof. David P. Gushee is an amazing post evangelical thinker, a distinguished university professor of Christian ethics at Mercer University. So why do people twist themselves to make their Christian ethics fit their political ideas and political desires? Our guest today is a professor and a Christian ethicist who has literally written the book on the subject, David p Gushy, and he's talking about how. This lack of Christian ethics is actually putting our democracy in danger. And he says this authoritarian pull of Christianity. Is putting us all at risk in our culture. Rev. Prof. David P. Dr. David Gushee is one of the world's leading Christian social ethicists who tackles the most polarizing issues of our day by asking the question, “As followers of Jesus, how shall we live?” In this episode, he asks that question in relation to politics. David guides us on a journey into the heart and history of democracy and makes the case for Christians to engage in it thoughtfully and proactively. No political system is perfect, but democracy gives us the opportunity to engage in politics for the sake of justice, peace, and human flourishing. And, if we are not careful, one manifestation of Christianity could lead to democracy's end.
