Your Emotions As a Guide: A Year-End Review

Beautiful Work Beautiful Life

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 29, 2025 40:49

In this end-of-year episode of Beautiful Work Beautiful Life, cohosts Laurel Holland and Laurel Boivin invite listeners into a deeper, more intimate look at their emotional lives. Rather than focusing on year-end accomplishments, this conversation turns inward toward the lived emotional landscape that shaped the year: grief, anger, fear, and joy. Together, Laurel and Laurel explore why emotions are such powerful messengers, how resistance keeps us from processing what we feel, and how building emotional capacity leads to a fuller, more connected life. You'll be gently guided to reflect honestly on how you felt this year, what those feelings revealed, and what emotional patterns are asking for attention as you step into a new season of growth. It's a spacious and soulful invitation to reconnect with yourself, and to design your year ahead from a place of deeper self-awareness. In this episode: * Why developing emotional awareness is essential to authentic living * Four foundational emotional “quadrants”: grief, anger, fear, and joy * The subtle but powerful role trust plays in your ability to feel joy * How to reflect on your emotional year — the highs, lows, and everything in between * Using your emotional inventory to guide the year ahead Your End-of-Year Emotional Inventory: Grief — What was lost, disappointing, or unprocessed? Anger — What boundaries need strengthening or revisiting? Fear — What held you back, protected you, or asked for healing? Joy — What delighted you, inspired you, or called you forward? Journaling prompts are suggested to further your exploration. 1. What losses or disappointments did I experience this year? 2. What sadness have I acknowledged — and what have I avoided? 3. How do I give myself space to sit with and feel my grief? 4. What “small” griefs or disappointments did I minimize or judge as “not a big deal”? 5. What am I angry about from this past year? 6. How is my anger serving me? 7. Where are boundaries needed, strengthened, or repaired? 8. What forgiveness work is calling to me — toward others or myself? 9. In what ways am I still blaming others instead of tending to my own inner work? 10. What did I feel afraid of this year, and how did that shape my choices? 11. When was fear trying to keep me safe — and when was it limiting my life? 12. Where do I feel anxiety, and what emotion might be underneath it (grief, anger, disappointment, etc.)? 13. How can I begin to build a more compassionate relationship with my fear? 14. What genuinely brought me joy or delight this year? 15. Where did I expect joy and not find it — and what does that reveal about my expectations or needs? 16. What gets in the way of me allowing or receiving joy? 17. Where do I need more trust — in myself, others, or life — to experience more joy? On this very special episode, Razib talks to paleoanthroplogists John Hawks and Chris Stringer. Hawks is a paleoanthropologist who has been a researcher and commentator in human evolutionary biology and paleoanthropology for over two decades. With a widely read weblog (now on Substack), a book on Homo naledi, and highly cited scientific papers, Hawks is an essential voice in understanding the origins of our species. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1994 with degrees in French, English, and Anthropology, and received both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan, where he studied under Milford Wolpoff. He is currently working on a textbook on the origins of modern humans in their evolutionary context. Hawks has already been a guest on Unsupervised Learning three times. Chris Stringer is affiliated with the Natural History Museum in London. Stringer is the author of African Exodus. The Origins of Modern Humanity, Lone Survivors: How We Came to Be the Only Humans on Earth and Homo Britannicus - The Incredible Story of Human Life in Britain. A proponent since the 1970's of the recent African origin of modern humans, he has also for decades been at the center of debates around our species' relationship to Neanderthals. In the 1980's, with the rise to prominence of the molecular model of "mtDNA Eve," Stringer came to the fore as a paleoanthropological voice lending support to the genetic insights that pointed to our African origins. Trained as an anatomist, Stringer asserted that the fossil evidence was in alignment with the mtDNA phylogenies, a contention that has been broadly confirmed over the last five decades. Razib, Hawks and Stringer discuss the latest work that has come out of Yuxian, China, and how it updates our understanding of human morphological diversity, and integrate it with the newest findings about Denisovans from whole genome sequencing. They talk about how we exist at a junction, with more and more data, but theories that are becoming more and more rickety in terms of explaining the patterns we see. Hawks talks about the skewing effect of selection on phylogenetic trees, while Stringer addresses the complexity of the fossil record in East Asia.

ŚB 5.19.16-19In the tract of land known as Bhārata-varṣa, as in Ilāvṛta-varṣa, there are many mountains and rivers. Some of the mountains are known as Malaya, Maṅgala-prastha, Maināka, Trikūṭa, Ṛṣabha, Kūṭaka, Kollaka, Sahya, Devagiri, Ṛṣyamūka, Śrī-śaila, Veṅkaṭa, Mahendra, Vāridhāra, Vindhya, Śuktimān, Ṛkṣagiri, Pāriyātra, Droṇa, Citrakūṭa, Govardhana, Raivataka, Kakubha, Nīla, Gokāmukha, Indrakīla and Kāmagiri. Besides these, there are many other hills, with many large and small rivers flowing from their slopes. Two of the rivers – the Brahmaputra and the Śoṇa – are called nadas, or main rivers. These are other great rivers that are very prominent: Candravasā, Tāmraparṇī, Avaṭodā, Kṛtamālā, Vaihāyasī, Kāverī, Veṇī, Payasvinī, Śarkarāvartā, Tuṅgabhadrā, Kṛṣṇāveṇyā, Bhīmarathī, Godāvarī, Nirvindhyā, Payoṣṇī, Tāpī, Revā, Surasā, Narmadā, Carmaṇvatī, Mahānadī, Vedasmṛti, Ṛṣikulyā, Trisāmā, Kauśikī, Mandākinī, Yamunā, Sarasvatī, Dṛṣadvatī, Gomatī, Sarayū, Rodhasvatī, Saptavatī, Suṣomā, Śatadrū, Candrabhāgā, Marudvṛdhā, Vitastā, Asiknī and Viśvā. The inhabitants of Bhārata-varṣa are purified because they always remember these rivers. Sometimes they chant the names of these rivers as mantras, and sometimes they go directly to the rivers to touch them and bathe in them. Thus the inhabitants of Bhārata-varṣa become purified. The people who take birth in this tract of land are divided according to the qualities of material nature – the modes of goodness [sattva-guṇa], passion [rajo-guṇa], and ignorance [tamo-guṇa]. Some of them are born as exalted personalities, some are ordinary human beings, and some are extremely abominable, for in Bhārata-varṣa one takes birth exactly according to one's past karma. If one's position is ascertained by a bona fide spiritual master and one is properly trained to engage in the service of Lord Viṣṇu according to the four social divisions [brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya and śūdra] and the four spiritual divisions [brahmacārī, gṛhastha, vānaprastha and sannyāsa], one's life becomes perfect. Please feel free to join our Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Telegram group chat (for both prabhujīs and mātājīs): https://t.me/iskmnews

11/21/26 - We explore the growing movement for legal and spiritual recognition of every pre-born child as a human person made in the image of God. As personhood becomes an increasingly urgent topic in the public square, we reflect on the Church's clear and unwavering teaching that human life must be protected from the moment of conception. We also highlight recent signs of hope, such as the National Men's March in Boston, where faithful men gathered to pray, repent, and publicly witness to the dignity of unborn children. We examine why personhood matters, how Catholics can effectively articulate the truth in a culture confused about the value of human life, and what concrete steps believers can take to build a society that recognizes, protects, and cherishes every human person, no matter how small.

Professor Eugene Finkel explains that the pervasive cruelty in Russian forces stems from a historical willingness to use extreme violence, where human life is cheap, evident from Stalin's cynical fears of losing Ukraine to modern conflicts. Russians are willing to make Ukraine a desert to secure control, employing methods consistent with their actions in Chechnya and Syria. In 2022, Putin, trapped in isolation with like-minded nationalists, believed Ukrainians would not fight back. His motivation was the fundamental belief that Ukraine is not a real state and must not defy Russia by choosing its own path. Guest: Professor Eugene Finkel.

7. The Brutality of Control: From Stalin's Cynicism to Putin's War The cruelty demonstrated by Russian forces stems from a historical Russian/Soviet brutality where human life is regarded as cheap. Stalin exemplified this cynicism, as shown in a 1932 letter where he discussed using severe force to prevent losing control of Ukraine. For Moscow, controlling Ukraine is crucial, and both Imperial and Putin's governments are willing to use extreme violence to subjugate the population. When Putin launched the 2022 invasion, he was isolated and surrounded by yes-men, trapped by his belief that Ukrainians were essentially Russians who would welcome Russian control. The military force deployed was inadequate for conventional warfare, suggesting they planned only a short "policing operation"—a quick raid to change the government and hold a parade. This miscalculation and the resulting brutality are driven not by immediate security concerns like NATO, but by the deep psychological belief that Ukraine is not a real state and must be controlled by Russia. 1855 BRITISH ARMY

We begin exploring the fifth commandment: “you shall not kill”. The Catechism reminds us that human life is sacred, and we must not take the life of another innocent human. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus takes this commandment even further as he calls us to avoid anger, hatred, and vengeance in addition to loving our enemies. By forgiving and extending to others the same love and mercy we are willing to extend to ourselves, we are respecting the dignity of that person. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2258-2262. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. In this episode, Mark Vance and Emily Jensen continue through the Ten Commandments by exploring the sixth commandment: “You shall not murder.”Building on Simeon's recent sermon, they discuss the sanctity of life from a biblical perspective and reflect on how this command extends far beyond the act of taking life. Together they talk through cultural shifts, issues of human dignity, and what it looks like for Christians to uphold life in a society that often devalues it.Episode Highlights:00:00 — Introducing the Sixth Commandment: “You shall not murder”04:30 — The deeper meaning of the sanctity of life10:40 — Cultural attitudes toward life and human dignity16:15 — How Christians can respond with conviction and compassion23:10 — Living out the value of life in everyday relationshipsResources:Cornerstone Church Sermons: Listen Online

How should Christians react to political violence? In this deeply reflective episode, Mike Erre and Tim Stafford tackle hard questions about faith, politics, and the role of the church in society. With a week marked by tragedy, including the assassination of Charlie Kirk and a series of shootings, the hosts explore what a kingdom response looks like in these turbulent times.  From condemning all acts of violence equally to affirming the dignity of every human being, they emphasize the need for a cruciformity—a life shaped by the values and teachings of Jesus. They discuss navigating cultural challenges with wisdom, rejecting the polarizing rage economy, and fostering a community rooted in justice, love, and mutual accountability. How can the church rise above partisan responses and embody the upside-down kingdom of God? What does it mean to lament, honor complex legacies, and act with hope amidst despair?  This conversation challenges listeners to rethink their approach to cultural issues, faith, and the call to stand as exiles and strangers in today's society. Julie takes listeners on a journey from her upbringing in rural Alaska—surrounded by wild forests and medicinal plants—to her global studies in botanical medicine, and ultimately to the creation of a skincare line that celebrates the intelligence of plants.Long before “clean beauty” became a buzzword, Julie envisioned formulations that go beyond the usual staples. Leaf People integrates powerful botanicals like reishi, rhodiola, ginkgo, burdock root, and horsetail, capturing the full spectrum of each plant's chemical and energetic properties. Her approach is holistic, emphasizing whole-plant synergy and honoring the subtle energetics of each ingredient through practices like meditation, Reiki, and blessings by Tibetan monks.Julie also shares her philosophy of ally pairing, inspired by how plants naturally grow together in communities, and how this principle shapes her formulations. Beyond skincare, Leaf People reflects a broader vision of connection—between people, plants, and the environment. Modern science meets bhakti wisdom: after 75 years of research, Harvard scientists concluded that good relationships—not wealth, fame, or even cholesterol—are the strongest predictor of long-term health and happiness. In this episode, Raghunath and Kaustubha discuss how the bhakti tradition is built on the understanding that life is meant to soften our hearts and train us to live harmoniously with God and every living being. They contrast this meaningful, purpose-driven worldview with the atheist perspective that sees life as random and purposeless—and reveal how bhakti offers a far richer vision of why we're here, how we grow, and how we truly thrive. This theme comes alive as they read about the gopīs' “village science”—washing baby Krishna, chanting mantras, and placing divine names on His body—which illustrates a profound technology of sound and love. Far from superstition, these rituals reflect the healthiest patterns for human life: relationships rooted in service, affection, and divine connection. Key Highlights: * How Vedic “village science” anticipated modern discoveries in vibration and sound. * Why bhakti places relationships—with God, others, and all beings—at the center of spiritual life. * Rituals and mantras as technologies of divine love, not superstition. * And yes, bar-hanging might make you live longer… but bhakti makes life meaningful. On this episode of ID the Future from the archive, biochemist and medical doctor Michael Denton explores a “miraculous convergence of properties” for life. The topic is Denton's book Children of Light: The Astonishing Properties of Sunlight That Make Us Possible, part of his Privileged Species book series that also includes The Miracle of Man, The Miracle of the Cell, The Wonder of Water, and Fire-Maker. Here, Denton lets his astonishment flow freely in an interview with host Sarah Chaffee, with topics ranging from the light of the sun to key chemicals here on earth. "The atmosphere lets through just the light we need," says Denton, "and the sun puts out just the light we need. It's a remarkable coincidence...The atmosphere does just what is needed for life on earth." Taken together, it's an astonishing array of evidence showing how finely tuned Earth is for human life. And the common-sense conclusion, Denton says, is that a designing intelligence is the most adequate explanation for the properties on our planet that make life like us possible. This is Part 1 of a two-part discussion. Source
