Gushee returns to discuss how Christians should respond to the erosion of democracy and the assault on marginalized groups in America. With record-low approval ratings from outside the Republican base, Donald Trump's return to power has raised alarm bells across university campuses, LGBTQ advocacy circles, and immigrant communities. In this episode, Gushee—one of the most respected voices in Christian moral theology—joins hosts Will Wright and Josh Burtram to unpack how Christian ethics should inform public life. From LGBTQ dignity to democratic values, Gushee urges Christians to reject fear-based politics and embrace foundational biblical norms: love, justice, dignity, and truth. He also explains how Christians can ethically engage without sacrificing their values—or their compassion.

Jimmy noted the profound psychological damage such practices inflict, emphasizing the dehumanizing comparison of being gay to acts like murder.Eli highlighted how the McDonalds, influenced by external voices such as David Gushee's progressive theological views, shifted to a more accepting, albeit imperfect, stance. Today we have a fascinating conversation with Christian ethicist David Gushee about the moral teachings of Jesus. Gushee has spent decades wrestling with how to faithfully apply Jesus' radical vision for the kingdom of God in our modern context. What struck me most in our discussion was Gushee's insistence that Jesus' ethics are not merely aspirational, but profoundly subversive to the status quo. Jesus challenges our assumptions about power, wealth, tradition, and social status - calling us to a radical reorientation of our values and priorities. Gushee highlights key themes like Jesus' concern for the marginalized, his critique of religious and cultural traditions that exclude, and his vision of freedom that is not beholden to the expectations of others. It's a challenging message, but one that Gushee believes the church desperately needs to recover if we are to faithfully follow in the way of Jesus. This is a conversation that will make you think deeply about what it means to live as a disciple of Christ in our modern world. Gushee doesn't offer easy answers, but he compellingly lays out Jesus' moral vision and invites us to wrestle with its radical implications. I found it both inspiring and convicting - I hope you will as well.Rev. Prof. Dr. David P. Gushee (PhD, Union Theological Seminary, New York) is Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University, and Chair of Christian Social Ethics at Vrije Universiteit (“Free University”) Amsterdam, and Senior Research Fellow, International Baptist Theological Study Centre.Gushee is the elected Past-President of both the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Christian Ethics, signaling his role as one of America's leading Christian ethicists. I presume many of you, like me, are feeling a deep swirl of emotions coming out of a week where we have witnessed the re-election of Trump. Honestly it feels so baffling to me that someone can so blatantly be a convicted felon, a misogynist, an authoritarian, completely void of compassion and empathy for vulnerable people…and with all this and so much more on full display and public record… still be worshipped and adored and actively chosen by a majority of voters. And one of the most disturbing realities is how many white Evangelical Christians unashamedly throw their support and indeed their votes behind this man. There's a strong argument to be made that Evangelical support for Trump in 2016 has been one of the major catalysts for people deconstructing faith and leaving the institutional church. The #exvangelical movement can largely be traced back to that election.White Evangelicals aren't solely responsible for Trump — and why he had such a clear majority of support in this election is beyond my ability or this podcast's ability to answer. And yet, this disturbing confluence of politics and religion and the questions it raises has obviously been very real and personal for many of us. And so this week I actually wanted to replay an earlier podcast conversation from a couple years back now, with David Gushee (that I think remains very relevant).   David has been one of the voices that has helped me understand the history that led to what American Evangelicalism is today. He has also been a strong advocate for defending democracy — and my second of two interviews with him was discussing his book ‘Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies'. You may want to go back and listen to that though I understand if the wound feels too fresh right now (though of course the need to defend democracy only increases after this election result). But I actually wanted to revisit my first conversation with David, in which we mainly spoke about his book ‘After Evangelicalism' which asks where do you go when you've seen the ugliest manifestations of Evangelical Christianity and want none of that…but you still want a faith that makes sense and approaches the world in ethical, compassionate, just ways? David speaks so well about this.I'm reminded this week — as I often am — that the most important choice is not between theism or atheism. Between religious or non-religious. Christian or not Christian. The choice is what kind of Christian will I be? What kind of human will I be? What kind of neighbour will I be? Evil arrives under the guise of many labels. So too does love. And when we fail to see love through the most powerful leaders in this world — we might want to throw our hands up in despair. Yet, I think it only becomes more essential that we choose the alternate reality — the truer reality — of self-giving love lived out in our lives and neighbourhoods Want to reach out and let us know your thoughts or suggestions for the show? Dr. David Gushee returns to continue the timely discussion of his new book, The Moral Teachings of Jesus. Ken and David expand on the Golden Rule. Gushee's doctoral work at Union Seminary focussed on ethics and the Holocaust. His work on the horrors of torture got the attention of Christianity Today when the horrific American abuses against prisoners held at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay came to light. Christian military officials asked the magazine for guidance. In reponse, David was commissioned to write CT's extensive cover story. In it, he clarified, “the prohibition on torture in international law admits no exceptions,” and then offered an ethical treatise rooted in Jesus' teaching. Dr. Gushee expands on Jesus' emphasis on what we do over what we say - “By our fruit” we will be known. He points to the heavy implications that relate to money and wealth in Jesus' direct challenge. No one can serve both God and money. “Where your heart is, there will your treasure be.” It's a lively, insightful conversation filled with wisdom, humor and common sense - especially valuable for those sorting out the demands of toxic religion from the potent, life-altering teachings of the Rabbi from Nazareth. David Gushee - author, ethicist and global influencer - returns to talk about his new book entitled The Moral Teachings of Jesus: Radical Instruction in the Will of God. Professor Gushee, like Ken, interacts with many folks of all ages and stages who have become disillusioned with Christianity - particularly the evangelical version that has become identified with political conservatism. Often, while deconstructing religion, these same people will report - Jesus' life and teaching remain relevant and compelling. Ken takes the opportunity to ask some questions he's had for a long time: Why did my tradition focus way more on Paul than Jesus? Since the four gospels were written years after Jesus, how can we rely on them as an accurate account of the teachings of Jesus? Has the “Great Commission” in Matthew 28 been misrepresented and misunderstood to justify colonialism? Imperialism? To make the world like us? What about Matthew 25? Was Jesus influenced by the community at Qumran? Ken and Dr. Gushee review a collection of Jesus' teachings that are surprisingly relevant today. They include a review of Gushee's graduate school mentor, Glen Stassen's reading of the Sermon on the Mount, “no one can serve both God and mammon;” the “Golden Rule;” the house built on a rock; the rich man, Lazarus and “eternal conscious torment;” the woman caught in adultery; the Samaritan woman at the well, and more. Dr. Gushee finishes with a surprisingly powerful conclusion. SHOW NOTESThe Moral Teachings of Jesus: Radical Instruction in the Will of God Become a Patron | Ken's Substack PageSupport the show

We dissect the process of online radicalization, the normalization of extremist rhetoric, and the unsettling intersection of Christianity and right-wing extremism. We also examine the broader implications, including mass deportations and the undermining of democratic institutions. Don't miss this episode as we contemplate whether contemporary evangelicals can find harmony with their secular neighbors amidst a politically charged landscape. We have something unique and somewhat special for you this week. Not a horror film in the traditional genre sense, last year's award-winning film from Jonathan Glazer THE ZONE OF INTEREST takes an unconventional approach to a story that's been told countless times. The Zone of Interest follows the family of Rudolf Hoss, a commandant stationed at the infamous Auschwitz death camp. The film never shows us what happens in the camp where Hoss works, but rather shows us the day-to-day, often casual existence of his family. Shots of his wife Hedwig tending to her garden are punctuated by gunshots and the occasional scream. This juxtaposition prompts a haunting reflection on our own life and culpability to the atrocities around us.We are joined this week by friend of the FoG, Dr. David Gushee, who has appeared a few times before speaking to some of his recent books. He sits with us here to discuss his own historical research into the Holocaust and to unpack the potent approach this film takes to telling this story. We hope you enjoy this week's discerned and thoughtful conversation.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What happens when the very fabric of American democracy is put to the test? Join us as we confront the alarming state of our nation in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, featuring a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. We begin by dissecting the chaos of January 6th, 2021, when a Trump-incited mob stormed the Capitol, marking a pivotal moment in our history—a moment that saw many Republican members of Congress attempt to overturn the election results, forever altering the party's trajectory toward authoritarianism. Our journey takes us back to the 1960s, exploring the origins of racially charged rhetoric and the pivotal shifts of the Republican Party. From Barry Goldwater's extremism to Nixon's Southern strategy and Reagan's unifying conservative factions, we unravel how coded language and strategic political moves laid the groundwork for today's divisive landscape. The rise of figures like Newt Gingrich and the influence of Fox News further transformed Republican politics, setting the stage for the Tea Party and the ideological battles that followed Obama's election. And, then Trump. As we examine the aftermath of the 2020 election and the January 6th attack, we spotlight Trump's baseless voter fraud claims and the disturbing rise of far-right militia groups. With the 2024 election on the horizon, we discuss the precarious state of American democracy and the erosion of democratic norms.  Guests: Dr. Ian Haney Lopez, Dr. David Faris, Dr. David Gushee, & Dr. Edward Watts Sources:January 6th Audio Footage – Courtesy of the January 6th House CommitteeNixon/Reagan Call – Courtesy of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum: Tape 013-008Ronald Reagan 1980 Campaign Ad – Courtesy of the Reagan FoundationRonald Reagan Campaign Remarks 1976 – Courtesy of the Reagan LibraryRonald Reagan Remarks at Liberty Park – Courtesy of the Reagan LibraryRonald Reagan Inaugural Address – Courtesy of the Reagan LibraryObama Inaugural Address – Courtesy of President Barack Obama White House ArchiveTrump Sworn In – Courtesy of President Donald Trump White House ArchiveKevin McCarthy Statement on Trump – Courtesy of C-SpanMitch McConnell Statement on Trump – Courtesy of C-SpanLiz Cheney Statement on House Floor – Courtesy of C-SpanConfessions of a Republican – Courtesy of the Lyndon Baines Johnson LibraryInfados - Kevin MacLeodNews Theme · Kevin MacLeodDark Tales: Music by Rahul Bhardwaj from Pixabay-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com

As we count down to the release of the limited series After America, we are revisiting some past episodes of Deep Dive to help lay the groundwork for this important project that will attempt to answer the question - What would it actually look like if American democracy were to fail?Dark Tales: Music by Rahul Bhardwaj from Pixabay-------------  Can Christian nationalism reshape America? In this episode, I revisit a chat with Dr. David Gushee, a leading authority in Christian ethics, to tackle this pressing question and more. We navigate the intertwining paths of faith and politics, examining the alarming rise of authoritarianism within certain factions of American Christianity. We discuss how political figures have amplified the dangerous merging of religious fervor with political power, posing a significant threat to democratic values and equality. Our conversation delves into the historical and cultural dynamics fueling this phenomenon, exploring whether this radical shift represents a natural evolution or a distortion of Christian teachings. As an ordained minister, Dr. Gushee reflects on how the perceived loss of influence in traditionally dominant Christian cultures has led to a surge in hysteria and demagoguery, both threatening democracy and the essence of Christianity itself. We unpack the ways non-democratic ideologies are being nurtured within homeschool and Christian school settings, raising concerns about the future leaders who may undermine our democratic foundations. Finally, we explore the intricate relationship between authoritarianism and religion, looking at the historical evolution of Christianity and its struggles with adapting to democratic principles. Our discussion culminates in a call to action, emphasizing the urgent need for a recommitment to the values of kindness, empathy, and inclusivity rooted in Christian ideals. Join us as we lay the groundwork for our new series, "After America," and strive to build compassionate communities that honor both our democratic heritage and faith traditions.-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Deep Dive Music: Joystock

Drawing from the dramatic biblical account of the choice between Barabbas and Jesus, this discussion delves into the echoes of this ancient decision in today's fervent political landscape, where the lines between spiritual faith and political allegiance are often blurred. Our guests, including Dr. Andrew Whitehead, an associate professor of sociology and an authority on Christian nationalism  and Dr. David Gushee, a distinguished professor of Christian ethics, share their expertise on the allure of political power, the rise of Christian nationalism, and the ethical dilemmas faced by believers in the political arena today.Through their commentary, we explore how evangelical support for figures like Donald Trump—a symbol of immediate, worldly justice—making the connection to Barabbas even more relevant. Other guests like Dr. Steven Hassan, America's leading cult expert; Dr. Renee Carr, a clinical psychologist with deep insights into the psychology of politics and religion; and André Gagné, Ph.D.,Professor of Theological Studies tackle the complex dynamics of idolizing political leaders, the intertwining of faith and nationalism, and the moral and spiritual comparisons to other characters in the Bible. We end the episode with Amanda Carpenter, author of the book "Gaslighting America: Why We Love It When Trump Lies to Us" who discusses how Trump uses gaslighting to trick and deceive many of his followers. Listen to the full interview with each of our guests:“American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church” w/Dr. Andrew Whitehead"Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies" w/Dr. David P. He is a classic novel reader, world traveler, and tennis player, and awaits a call from his beloved Atlanta Braves to resume the baseball career he abandoned in college.About Defending Democracy From Its Christian Enemies:American democracy is in danger. How do we protect it from reactionary authoritarian Christianity? On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Americans stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of their political opponent's election. At the forefront were Christians claiming to act in the name of Jesus Christ and his supposed representative on earth, Donald Trump. How can this have happened? David P. Gushee tackles the question in this timely work of Christian political ethics. Gushee calls us to preserve democratic norms, including constitutional government, the rule of law, and equal rights for all, even as many Christians take a reactionary and antidemocratic stance. He analyzes where Christians have discarded their commitment to democracy and bought into authoritarianism in the US and several other countries, both historically and today. He urgently argues that to defend against reactionary and authoritarian Christians, we must revive and draw on our hard-won traditions of congregational democracy, dissident Black Christian politics, and covenantal theology. Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies makes a robust case for the defense of democracy from its enemies—including Christians—arguing for a renewed commitment to democracy on the part of Christians, by drawing on our own best traditions, not succumbing to mere secular liberalism. Any concerned Christian will leave this audio with eyes wide open to the dangers of our current form of political engagement. Tim is "Creator and Facilitator" of The New Evangelicals, a highly popular and widely followed non-profit that sponsors podcasts and commentary that appear regularly on YouTube, Instagram, and TikToc. His productions include everything from short spots to full-length interviews, In his conversation with Ken, Tim tells his story - from home-schooled kid to drummer in a worship band to sold-out Jesus-follower to high-energy podcast host. As his view of the gospel expanded, he began to resist evangelical Trumpism and then consider the validity of Pro-Choice, then develop LGBTQ sensibilities. As a consequence, Tim's lead pastor ceremoniously dismissed him from his cherished role as lead drummer in the worship band. That moment triggered a period he calls "deconstruction." Tim brings a truthful and direct challenge to an evangelicalism that has become a voting block for right-wing political causes, election denial, conspiracy theories, Christian Nationalism, the Trump cult, and a distortion of what Tim believes to be biblical Christianity. Ken and Tim have interviewed many of the same influencers, authors, and activists including  Brad Onishi, Lisa Sharon Harper, Kristen Kobes Du Mez, Pete Enns, David Gushee, Jemar Tisby, Diana Butler Bass, and Ben Cremer. Tim has also welcomed other notables to his podcast such as Anthea Butler, Matthew Taylor, Katherine Stewart, Tripp Fuller, Katelyn Beaty, Sam Perry, Andrew Seidel, Dante Stewart, and Dr. Russell Moore. Tim calls out people like Charlie Kirk, Sean Feucht,  Candace Owens,  and John MacArthur among others as perpetrators of false narratives that have misled many. It's a lively conversation you won't want to miss.SHOW NOTES - Including links to Tim and  THE NEW EVANGELICALSOriginal Air Date: April 2023Support the show

Ethicist, author and professor, Dr. David Gushee returns to the podcast to talk about his new book: Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies.  They begin talking about what many have called "the Nones," but Gushee calls Conscientious Objectors like Tim Whitaker and Pete Briscoe. (Ken includes himself.) Many of those "Nones" - those who claim to have no religious affiliation - actually find themselves in moral conflict with a religion that has violated its own moral standards. For Gushee (who is a committed Christian) democracy must be defended. Too many Christians are actively and aggressively attacking our democratic institutions all in the name of their God and their Bible. This is not new, and not limited to the United States. Dr. Gushee traces the challenges to democracy in France, Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary and Brazil. He recognizes Christian Nationalism as a threat but prefers his own label: Authoritarian Reactionary Christianity. Adolph Hitler, Vladimir Putin, Viktor Orbán, and Jair Bolsonaro all invite comparisons to Trumpism in the United States. Ken and David talk about characters and players like Pastor Greg Locke, firebrand Tucker Carlson, theologian James Cone and Gushee's mentor, Dr. Glen Stassen. The good professor draws from Baptist history, the Black Church and the biblical teaching around Covenant to invite us all to defend the democracy that guarantees our freedom to exercise our conscience in practicing the religion (or non-religion) of our choice. Episode SummaryAuthoritarianism is on the rise all across the world. Here in America, the leading proponents of anti-democratic ideology are evangelical Christians who have been swept up in the cult of Donald Trump. Driven by a dominator theology and good old-fashioned white supremacy, conservative Christians can be counted on as the leading supporters of dictatorial politics. As Dr. David Gushee writes in his book Defending Democracy From It's Christian Enemies, “Our current democratic crisis reveals a need to revisit the very meaning of democracy…Concerned citizens should care about the direction of movement in their own country. Ours is trending in a bad direction.”And that trend is leading many Christians to embrace what Gushee describes as “Nazified Christianity.” Since the 1960's, much of American public life has been moving toward greater freedoms, greater inclusivity, greater access to power, self-determination, and wealth for underrepresented populations. The Civil Rights Movement, feminist movement, sexual revolution, LGBTQIA movement, and the #METOO Movement have leveled the playing field. And who does that threaten? White, male Christians who are reacting to those new freedoms with violence and extremism. So, how do we work to not only save our democracy from it's Christian enemies, but to awaken our friends and family who have been taken captive by the rise of totalitarianism and the despotism of the Republican Party? This scholarly, yet practical conversation provides you with the resources and tools to have transformational conversations about the politics of Jesus as well as helping to equip you with the action-steps to save democracy during this political season. On this special Sunday edition of The Fear of God, Nathan invites back to the show author, professor, and Christian ethicist Dr. David Gushee for discussion about his new book: DEFENDING DEMOCRACY FROM ITS CHRISTIAN ENEMIES.While the work's title certainly pulls no punches about its themes, both its content and this conversation is incredibly thoughtful, tracking the history and development of democracy as a national framework and providing crucial context for why it is presently being challenged by certain strands of thought within the Christian faith. In moments both hopeful and sobering, this dialogue not only illuminates why this consideration is so vital for our moment in history, but points the way towards stronger reconciliation and communal cooperation between divergent political landscapes. It's a hearty and thoughtful discussion. We're privileged to have hosted it and we hope you enjoy it.Previous conversations with Dr Gushee and the Fear of God can be found below. What Scares Us and What Saves Us EpilogueIntroducing Christian EthicsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

But those who practice it say their anger, culture warring, and pursuit of power are actually how they're loving their neighbors. Then, Skye talks to actor Rainn Wilson, best known as Dwight Schrute from “The Office,” about religious pluralism, spiritual narcissism, why Hollywood misrepresents Christians, and how he became a follower of the Baha'i faith.
