Andrew and I were practicing daily on the South Mall of the university as the Brobdingnagian Bards. So we were there as a bunch of students ran through the school shouting and waving signs about the oppression of pants. The event resonated with me because, well, we wore kilts at all of our shows. We were “pantless” too. The event spread to other locations around the nation and eventually the world. But it took me four years before I wrote “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day”, a parody of the traditional Scottish song “Jock Stuart”. Instead of “a man you don't meet every day”, my song was about a man who loved wearing kilts, like I did. I didn't stop there. Again, I felt like No Pants Day was a Scottish holiday. So I decided to create a backstory for my song. I wanted people to think that the origins of No Pants Day was actually a Scottish holiday called No Troosers Day. I researched Scottish history and learned about the Proscription Act of 1746. This act banned the Scots from wearing “highland clothing”. The goal of course was to assimilate the Scots into Great Britain, just like the Disarming Act banned the Scottish from wearing weapons. From that base, I wrote a fictional history of an uprising in Glasgow where the Scots removed their trousers and donned their kilts and rewrote “Jock Stuart” to celebrate their love of the kilt and their culture. The best thing about this fictional history was that a few years later, a newspaper in Canada quoted the blog where I shared this fake history saying that this was ACTUALLY the origins of No Pants Day. This should serve as a reminder to all of us. Check your sources! I finally recorded this song in 2009 for my CD, Kilted For Her Pleasure. “Jock Stuart (A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day)” lyrics by Marc Gunn, May 6, 2004, music traditional Oh my name is Jock Stuart, I´m a trooser-less man And my roving young fellows move freely * So be easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I´m a man who wears a kilt every day. I'm Highlander made and a piper to trade And the tartan is me flag that I wear. I go out with my gun and my dog for to hunt Try to make me wear troosers, and you'll pay. I've got acres of land, I've got ships to command So burn your pants on No Troosers Day So come fill up my glass with whiskey or rum Then send o'er your lass and you'll see. It's better easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I'm a man who wears a kilt every day. 20:52 - Marc Gunn “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day” from Kilted For Her Pleasure 23:40 - JOIN THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. It also lasts pretty much forever. It is virtually impossible to remove it entirely from what I buy. But I have found a few items that I enjoy that are not that I thought I'd share. Did you know you can buy shampoo and conditioner in bar form? This was one of those weird rabbit holes I went down. Once upon a time, we didn't have liquid shampoo and conditioner. It certainly wasn't in a big plastic bottle. A day after I started researching this a few months back, Gwen came home with a Love Beauty and Planet shampoo conditioner bar from Target. I immediately tried it out and loved it. You can see a list of Shampoo and Conditioner bars here. My favorite body soap is the Dr Bronner's Lavender soap. I was starting to lament losing that when I just saw they have bar soap also. And of course, all of those are wrapped in paper and I can get it at my local Publix. 34:58 - Marc Gunn “Kilty Pleasure” from Selcouth 38:59 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. Tennessee soccer teams beat up on Atlanta United FC. A shocking loss to Memphis FC at Kennesaw in the US Open Cup, it was painful and embarrassing. Three days later, Atlanta couldn't win without Giorgos Giakoumakis, losing 3-1 on the road. Pineda might have this team in third place in the Eastern Conference, but this team is not performing well or to its full potential.

The Abbie DeLoach Foundation awarded scholarships to 17 students and organizations at its 7th annual scholarship class luncheon held on April 14th. The event celebrated academic excellence, exemplary service work, or athletic commitment. Among the recipients were two Cobb County students: Jaden Saunders, a college sophomore who graduated from Allatoona and is a golfer at Savannah State University, and Maddie Black, a Georgia Southern Nursing student who graduated from Harrison, is planning to become a CRNA and is a member of Kappa Delta sorority. The foundation was established in memory of Abbie DeLoach, who died in a tragic highway crash in April 2015, along with four fellow nursing students. The foundation's mission is to continue her good works, and 106 recipients have received ADF scholarships to date. Marietta City Council has discussed its zoning code for the first time since the implementation of a six-month freeze on apartment applications. The council voted 6-1 to approve the freeze, concerned about the number of developers proposing multifamily buildings in the area. City staff have been directed to present maps and ordinances showing what the “current lay of the land is,” before conducting a study examining the zoning code and its relationship to apartments. Mayor Steve Tumlin and the council have rejected many apartment proposals, favoring low-density, owner-occupied development, citing concerns such as crime and a lack of upkeep by landlords. Students at Marietta Middle School are participating in the Compost Connectors program, which teaches students about urban agriculture by having them collect food waste and turn it into compost. The program is run by Cobb Master Gardener Michelle Gambon, who volunteers with Food Well Alliance. Students use compost cranks to mix the compost and help break it down. Once it is no longer recognizable, it is used to enrich the school's garden. The goal of the program is to help students understand their role in building healthier communities by growing crops with compost. The program is in its second year of a three-year pilot and is hoping to expand to more schools. Georgia Bulldogs baseball Redshirt freshman and Walker School graduate Charlie Condon has been one of the top hitters in the country this season. He is hitting over .400 and has already hit 18 home runs. Condon's walk-up music is The Rolling Stones' classic "Paint It Black," which he said is a fun song that gets him in the right mindset. He said it is a song that his teammates and the fans enjoy. His teammates and Dawg baseball fans probably enjoy it a little more because the song means their star slugger is at the plate. Condon has noted that the level of competition he is facing is definitely higher than what he saw in high school, but he has been able to adjust to the much more challenging pitching he is facing in the SEC, crediting the competition for improving his game. He has spent much of the past two years working on his body to add muscle to his tall and lean frame. The 45th annual Possum Trot 10K will be held on June 17 at the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell. The event allows runners to race along the Chattahoochee River and supports the center's environmental education programs and wildlife rehabilitation efforts. Participants can choose between an in-person or virtual 10K and Fun Run, with all runners receiving free photos and a commemorative t-shirt, and 10K runners receiving a finisher medal. The race is also a Peachtree Road Race qualifier for 2024. The CNC's work helps over 700 injured animals annually and hosts 40,000 students each year for environmental education programs. Kennesaw State University's Executive Master of Business Administration has been ranked as the best in Georgia and among the top in the world for the seventh consecutive year, according to CEO Magazine's 2023 Global Executive MBA rankings. The program, offered by the Michael J. Coles College of Business, was ranked third in the country and No. 12 in the world, earning it "Tier One" status for the ninth year in a row. A man from Decatur, Eric Lee Francis, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years probation after pleading guilty to trafficking methamphetamine in Cobb County. The charges stem from a traffic stop in August 2021 when police found a large amount of meth and a glass pipe in Francis' car. In addition to the prison time, he has also been ordered to pay a $200,000 fine. The case was prosecuted by David Williamson and Elena Hernandez on behalf of the state, while Hina Asghar represented Francis at the plea. A 59-year-old man, Raymond Marti, was arrested and charged with impersonating an officer and possession of drugs outside a Marietta nightclub. He was wearing a shirt with "police" printed on the front, back, and sleeves, and when approached by a Marietta police officer, initially claimed to be a law enforcement officer. However, he later recanted and admitted to not being with the police. A search revealed he had a gun belt with a fake weapon, an outer vest carrier, and a stun gun, along with clear plastic bags filled with a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. He remains held without bond in Cobb County jail. The first phase of the Chattahoochee Riverlands project, which aims to develop a 100-mile greenway of trails along the Chattahoochee River, has broken ground. The 2.7-mile stretch of trail in south Cobb, Georgia, will run from Veterans Memorial Highway to Mableton Parkway and is expected to open in 2026. The pilot project will act as proof of concept for the wider Riverlands project, which aims to connect 19 cities and seven counties. The $44m pilot is being funded by a combination of $26m in public money and $18m in private money. The project will transform a 100-mile stretch of riverfront from Lake Lanier to Newnan into a public space. Ser Familia, a Kennesaw-based nonprofit that offers family, social, and mental health services to Hispanic families in metro Atlanta, has received a $1 million grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The grant will be used to expand the CAFE model and hire staff to provide assistance for families in Fair Oaks, a community near Smyrna with a population of about 9,000 people. The median income in Fair Oaks is $43,000, which is half of the Cobb County average, and one third of its residents lack health insurance. Ser Familia plans to hire a Project Director, Case Manager, and Family Navigator to connect families to services and provide emergency assistance for urgent needs. Those who want to help the Fair Oaks community can contact Ser Familia or the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The Cobb Collaborative has unveiled a new Little Free Library at Garrett Middle School in Austell. The nonprofit organization aims to put books in the hands of children and adults around the world. The new LFL will be available 24/7 with free accessibility and operates under the “Take One, Leave One” theory. Local officials and community members attended the dedication ceremony, where they spoke about the importance of literacy and encouraged students to pursue their dreams. This is the third LFL established in Austell this year as part of the Collaborative's goal to establish LFLs throughout Cobb County. About 99% of educators in Cobb County schools plan to return for the upcoming school year, an increase from last year's 98%. This high retention rate is attributed to Cobb's reputation as one of the top places to work in Georgia and the nation. Nearly 1,500 professionals attended Cobb's recent job fair at Truist Park, coming from as far away as California. Cobb Schools has also partnered with the University of West Georgia to offer advanced degrees to educators at no cost through Georgia's BEST, with about 4,000 expressing interest. Cobb Schools is hosting another job fair on June 8, primarily focused on filling classified support positions but with teaching positions also available. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Developer Merritt Lancaster, a co-founder of Bridger Properties, participated in a panel on the economic health of Marietta Square. Lancaster focused on why his company viewed the square as a profitable investment and what residents wanted. According to an online survey, residents wanted more food and beverage businesses in the area. Lancaster said attracting new restaurants and bars would keep dollars in the Square. However, a resident warned that Marietta is not the same as Roswell or Woodstock, and its local restaurants and shops are what make it special. Lancaster's firm has faced controversy since September when it hiked rents or declined to renew leases for storefronts on Church Street. The city of Acworth announced the permanent closure of the School Street railroad crossing downtown due to frequent collisions between vehicles and trains since 2018. The city has been unsuccessful in identifying alternate crossing locations to supplement the closure. The incidents have cost the police and public works departments money and resources, and the recent collision rendered the south cross arm inoperable. The city attributed the frequent issues to the railroad's track raising, leading to trucks and trailers getting stuck. The Development Authority of Cobb County has passed a bond inducement resolution to provide tax incentives to a public charter school, Northwest Classical Academy, located in Kennesaw, Georgia. The school is open to all Georgia students, but a majority of its students come from Cobb County. The closure aims to prevent a potential public health event from train derailments carrying hazardous materials through the community. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. The former Marine veteran and cybersecurity executive will become Mableton's first mayor since it existed as a city between 1912 and 1916. Owens secured 56% of the vote compared to Carman's 44%. In part 2 of our Resurrecting series, Mike shows us why the resurrection of Jesus is so important to our faith as Christ's followers.
The Cobb County School District in Georgia has proposed allocating $930,578 for 11 new school resource officers in its fiscal 2024 budget. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale cites recent school shootings as reasons for adding armed officers to the force, stating that they deter potential intruders and provide immediate response times. However, Democratic school board member Becky Sayler expressed concern that an increase in armed officers could result in more student arrests, particularly among students of color. Republican board member Randy Scamihorn assured Sayler that the officers are well-trained to de-escalate situations. The final approval of the budget is expected on May 18th. Marietta City Council's approval of a mixed-use development project that would replace a Kroger grocery store with apartments and retail space was vetoed by Mayor Steve "Thunder" Tumlin. The project would have seen the redevelopment of a 4.8-acre lot by developer William Casaday, who requested a rezoning. Tumlin's veto was backed by Councilman Grif Chalfant, who campaigned for lower housing density. A six-month moratorium on new apartment building applications was approved after the project's rejection. The property's future remains unclear, with concerns raised about the possibility of less desirable commercial ventures worsening traffic in the area. Kennesaw House, now home to the Marietta History Center, was once a hotel where James J. Andrews and his group of volunteer raiders from the Union Army stayed the night before embarking on the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862. The raiders commandeered The General locomotive and three box cars heading for Big Shanty, Kennesaw, cutting telegraph wires and attempting to do as much damage to the railroad as possible. They were eventually captured, and Andrews and seven others were convicted as spies and hanged. Disney turned it into a film in 1956, staring Fess Parker as Andrews and Jeffrey Hunter as Fuller. The Southern Museum, located across the tracks in Kennesaw, now houses The General locomotive and tells the story of the Great Locomotive Chase. The Southern Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mount Paran Christian School has announced that student Claire Finch has been named a finalist for the 2023 Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP) as a visual arts major. The GHP is a four-week-long college immersive program for Georgia's top students in academics and the arts, and it will be held at Georgia Southern University. As a finalist, Finch represents the top quartile of the top percentile of her student peer group in the state. MPCS also set new school benchmarks with its largest contingency of nominees ever and multiple semifinalists named in one year. The program is fully funded by Georgia's state legislature. Cobb County School District Superintendent Chris Ragsdale surprised many by recommending a tax cut as part of the district's $1.5 billion budget for 2024. Ragsdale proposed reducing the millage rate from 18.9 to 18.7 mills and offering 7.5% raises to all full-time employees. The budget also includes about $83 million to fund the raises, which range from 7.5% to 12.1%. Ragsdale called the budget "very employee focused." The tax rollback would reduce the district's revenue from property taxes by about $7.6 million annually. Two public hearings are scheduled to allow the public to weigh in on the proposal. The Marietta City Council has voted to freeze new apartment applications for six months, directing city staff to conduct a study examining the city's zoning code as it relates to apartments. The item authorizes them to hire a consultant if needed. Skepticism about apartments has been a concern for some time, as they have been associated with transiency, crime, and a lack of upkeep which leads to blight. The moratorium was approved after the mayor vetoed the council's approval of the 322-unit apartment complex at the corner of Powers Ferry and Delk roads. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. The Marietta City Council is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a six-month moratorium on new apartments in the city as Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin and council members seek to pump the brakes on multifamily housing. The proposal comes after the city has received a raft of applications to build new apartments. Recently proposed residential buildings include one in downtown Marietta, one at the corner of Delk and Powers Ferry roads, and one at the corner of Roswell and Powers Ferry roads. But the moratorium would not apply to any of those proposals, since developers are entitled to city law as it stands when they submit their application. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. On March 24, 2022, his rent increased to $68.39 a day and then to a rate of $70.19 a day on April 24, 2022, according to Mitchell. “I protested to the manager, citing the law and all she and her assistant could say is, ‘We are a hotel,' like a broken record,” Mitchell said. “I contacted their guest relations department, which I learned just circles around to the manager before I attempted to reach the district manager and never received a response.” #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. The burning of the piano, a long-standing tradition that started with the Royal Air Force, was recently held at Dobbins Air Reserve Base to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the 700th Airlift Squadron. The ceremony is also meant to honor fallen airmen, particularly those who have given their lives in support of the squadron's missions through the years. The tradition is said to have originated from two stories related to the RAF during World War II. The controlled burn is conducted with utmost caution to minimize risks and maximize safety. The event at Dobbins was the first of its kind and is planned to be an annual tradition commemorating those who lost airmen from Dobbins who died in the previous year. A woman accused of shoplifting, Laytosha Virgil, escaped into a storm drain during a hearing in the Cobb County Superior Court's mental health court. She had been out on a $5,720 bond for felony shoplifting when she suddenly left the courthouse and was found in a storm drain. Law enforcement went through about 100 feet of narrow drainage to secure Virgil, who refused to leave, and bring her back above ground. Virgil was taken into custody around 3 p.m. and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and medical care. Thursday was the second time in two months Virgil was caught trying to hide from authorities. The Cobb Galleria Specialty Shops, located inside the Cobb Galleria convention center in Georgia, USA, was never as successful as its developers had hoped. Even when the convention business took off, the mall failed to take advantage of this trend. Today, the mall is home to 20 remaining shops, which pay month-to-month leases that barely cover operating costs. Plans to redevelop the Galleria complex by razing the mall and building a hotel and restaurants have been around since the 1990s, and the project is now gaining traction thanks to a revenue-sharing agreement between the authority, the Cobb Board of Commissioners and Cobb's cities. The Trust for Public Land, a non-profit that builds parks, has purchased a nine-acre scrub-covered lot in Mableton Parkway, located across the Chattahoochee River from Fulton County Airport in Atlanta. The site is intended to serve as the first of 25 regional trailheads for the Chattahoochee Riverlands project, a massive undertaking to create a series of parks and trails connecting a 100-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee from Lake Lanier's Buford Dam to Newnan. The first portion of the trail in south Cobb will be a pilot project that showcases the potential of the full Riverlands project. The Georgia Tech baseball program announced on Thursday that they will retire former Yellow Jacket standout Mark Teixeira's Number 23. Teixeira, a former Atlanta Braves first baseman, will be honored in a pregame ceremony on May 20th before Georgia Tech's game against Virginia. His number will join only two other retired numbers in program history. During his time at Georgia Tech, Teixeira earned a long list of honors, including the 2000 Dick Howser Trophy, National Player of the Year, 2000 ACC Player of the Year, and 2000 consensus first-team All-American. He was also named to the All-ACC first team twice. Teixeira played a 14-year career in MLB, winning five Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers. He also won the 2009 World Series as a member of the New York Yankees. Teixeira was elected to the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and returned to campus after retiring from professional baseball to complete his degree in business administration in 2022. Bridger Properties, the developers behind the proposed 135-unit residential building in Marietta downtown, are considering condominiums instead of apartments for the building. The developers held a community meeting to hear from residents, many of whom were concerned about the maintenance of rental apartments. The seven-story building would be built on a 1.25-acre site north of the Marietta Square Market food hall. The land is already zoned for a category that permits the building, and the developers are not seeking variances from the city. However, Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin and some City Council members have said they do not want it to be built. Community reporter Matt Goldin catches up with John Bednarowski coming to us from the Masters, presented by Ingles. An Arizona resident named Michael Lopez completed the Georgia Bass Slam, catching seven different species of bass across Georgia. The Bass Slam recognizes anglers with knowledge and skill while also promoting conservation and management of black bass and their habitats. To qualify, fish must be caught legally on waters where permission is granted, within a calendar year, and basic information and photos must be provided. Successful Bass Slammers receive a certificate, passes to the Go Fish Education Center, stickers, and recognition on the Bass Slam webpage and social media. Additionally, Georgia has a Trophy Bass Angler Award program for largemouth bass catches of 10 pounds or greater. Atlanta-based Bridger Properties has outlined plans for a multimillion-dollar renovation of the land it owns in Marietta's downtown area. The plans include a public plaza at Marietta Station, a facelift for a dozen stores on Church Street, and a new seven-storey residential building north of Marietta Square Market food hall. The developer has also said it will lease its retail properties to small businesses and local operators, and it is seeking new restaurants and retail outlets for Church Street. However, residents raised concerns over the departure of previous tenants, the rental rates charged and the loss of parking spaces. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Sherrard Marquise Brooks, a 24-year-old man from Austell, has been indicted by a Cobb grand jury on charges of murder and child abuse in connection to the death of his one-month-old daughter, Nevaeh Brooks. Smyrna police responded to alleged child abuse at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in November 2021, where Nevaeh's mother, Alissa Marchand, had taken her. Nevaeh was found to have extensive brain hemorrhages and bruises all over her body. Brooks claimed his daughter had no visible injuries, but medical records showed otherwise. Nevaeh was pronounced dead in November 2021, and the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office concluded her death was due to non-accidental trauma. Brooks is being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. Derek Price II, a junior at Kennesaw State University, has received a prestigious Barry M. He hopes to inspire the next generation of underrepresented students to pursue STEM careers and plans to continue his research in aeronautics, controls, and robotics at a national laboratory while pursuing a Ph.D.Top of Form Chris Kirk, former Etowah High School and University of Georgia standout, is making his first appearance at the Masters since 2016. Kirk had struggled with alcoholism and depression and had to take time off to rehabilitate. He returned to the PGA Tour in 2019 and has since posted four top 10 finishes, currently sitting at seventh on the FedEx Cup points list and ranked No. 32 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Kirk won his first tournament in almost a decade at the Honda Classic and earned a spot in the Masters. This will be his fourth Masters start, playing with Abraham Ancer and Keegan Bradley on Thursday at 10:06 a.m. Dr. Victor Bledsoe, pastor of Shiloh Hills Baptist Church, has named Sheila Langford as the principal of Shiloh Hills Christian School. She recently earned a master's degree in Biblical Studies from Moody Theological Seminary. She has dedicated 28 years to Christian education. In its first public meeting before a city board, developer Bridger Properties received approval to convert a small parking lot at the Marietta Station office complex to a public plaza, and give a facelift to its stores along Church Street. The city's Historic Board of Review voted unanimously to approve the design at its Monday night meeting, with board member Chris Brown absent. Bridger can now proceed with its plans to replace a 22-spot parking lot along the Mountain to River Trail into a park, and spruce up its Church Street properties with new paint, doors, awnings and other features. The developer has more dramatic plans to change downtown, however. Bridger, which owns more than four acres of downtown real estate, is looking to build a 135-unit, 84-foot-tall apartment building off Marietta Square. The historic board is scheduled to hear that proposal and vote on the apartment building's appearance at its May 1 meeting. The Cobb Planning Commission has delayed a proposal to build 20 homes on the site of a historic log cabin on Post Oak Tritt Road in east Cobb. The proposal by Kenneth Clary has been met with concerns from the public about maintaining the historical significance of the property, which includes the one-room log cabin, constructed in the early 19th century. The cabin is uninhabitable, but the historic preservation group Cobb Landmarks has been working to save it. The delay is due to a lack of information from the applicant, and the proposal will be heard at a later date. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. However, tension arose this week between Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and Commissioner Keli Gambrill as the board quizzed consultants with questions about recommended strategies the county might pursue over the next five years. Gambrill expressed skepticism over the recommended strategies, particularly in relation to economic development, and suggested that the county's involvement in these initiatives should be left to the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Cupid argued that economic development was a key function of government, and the county could partner with the chamber while retaining accountability to taxpayers And, John Bednarowski checks in with us from Augusta National as the Masters Practice rounds have begun.
