Today on Uncommon Sense, we're talking about “law enforcement” and why so many people no longer feel like laws are actually being enforced equally or consistently, especially when it comes to powerful and well-connected individuals connected to the Epstein scandal. We discuss the growing public frustration surrounding the unreleased and heavily redacted Epstein files, the lack of visible accountability for elite predators, and why so many Americans feel the justice system has failed women, children, and vulnerable people. We also talk about why local police departments, sheriffs, prosecutors, and public officials should be demanding full transparency and supporting the release of the complete unredacted Epstein files so the public can see the truth plainly. This episode also goes into the broader leadership crisis facing America and much of the world: weak leadership, fear of confrontation, and silence in the face of corruption. We discuss the need for stronger moral leadership, stronger families, stronger communities, and men willing to stand up publicly against evil instead of shrinking back from difficult conversations. If laws are not enforced equally, trust in institutions collapses. If justice is selective, people stop believing justice exists at all. It's time for courage, accountability, truth, and leadership again.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app

Experience an unmissable Thursday morning as the renowned University of Houston Africana Professor, Dr. Gerald Horne, leads an urgent and eye-opening discussion that directly impacts our community and future. Dr. Horne will unpack the critical Supreme Court decision restricting the 1965 Voting Rights Act—a ruling that threatens the foundation of our democracy and the hard-won rights of millions. He will also shed light on the pressing international challenges facing the US—from tense relations with Iran, NATO, and South Africa, to the looming implications of Trump’s threat to take over Cuba. But the conversation doesn’t stop there. We are honored to welcome powerful Civil Rights leaders, the Revd. Canon Leonard Hamlin and the Revd. Dr. Paul Smith, who witnessed history firsthand at the White House when LBJ signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Their invaluable perspective on the Supreme Court’s decision will inspire and inform your activism. Sister Phile from the Million Woman March will also passionately update us on the urgent search for thousands of missing Black women and girls—a crisis demanding our collective voice and action. This is more than a show—it’s a call to action.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello to you listening wherever your feet touch the ground!   Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for an important announcement) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. NO KINGS Rally 3.0 is another national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses from Trump's regime. This regime has cracked down on free speech, detained immigrants, killed American citizens, defied the courts, threatened anyone who would not bend a knee, enriched themselves and their obscenely greedy tycoons with unprecedented corruption, and started an illegal, idiotic war putting us on the eve of destruction. On Saturday March 28th Americans are once again taking to the streets of our nation. Here on Whidbey Island, Washington, our protest (organized by Indivisible Whidbey and supported by peacekeepers from SOS Whidbey) will  focus on defending democracy and civil rights. Demonstrators will speak out against the illegal war in the Middle East, sending troops into communities to carry out aggressively lawless actions by ICE, and the ongoing attempts to subvert voting rights and the midterm elections.   “It's more important than ever to speak out, to come together and demand a different path”, said Carrie Krueger, an event organizer from Indivisible Whidbey. “American citizens are being disappeared or killed in the street; our soldiers, including those from Whidbey Island, are in harm's way for a war that is illegal and devastating. The very foundations of our democracy, including separation of powers and free and fair elections, are being actively and intentionally dismantled.” The event will feature music by Singing Resistance and chants led by local student leaders. We will also raise money for the Neighbor to Neighbor Fund, a grassroots community fund supporting immigrants with financial assistance for food, housing, transportation and immigration legal fees. All of us are committed to non-violent action including de-escalation of conflicts. Peacekeepers will be on hand to ensure a peaceful and positive event. Our event will take place in Oak Harbor to support the veteran and active duty military who have served and are serving our country. Send us Fan MailKen's Latest Substack(REPRISE) Today, I welcome back a great friend of the show—ethicist, professor, pastor, and prolific author, Dr. David Gushee. Over the years, David and I have talked through several of his groundbreaking works: The Moral Teachings of Jesus, Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies, Introducing Christian Ethics, and After Evangelicalism. But today, we're returning to the book that started a movement—Changing Our Mind—a book that, remarkably, has never stopped selling since its first release ten years ago.Industry veteran David Crumm recently reminded us that fewer than 1 percent of all books ever reach 40,000 copies sold. Most don't even hit 2,000. And yet Changing Our Mind continues to travel—passed hand to hand, heart to heart—because people still need it. David tells me he receives messages every week from readers whose lives have been transformed. That kind of impact is rare. We're diving into the story behind this book: what prompted David to write it, the initial response, and the personal price he paid. Lost invitations, Christian booksellers who wouldn't carry his work, and critics who lined up to condemn him. But also, we talk about the courage of those who dared to praise the book—and the remarkable stories that have come back from readers. We'll explore the deep divides in today's church—the boardroom wrestling matches, the “holy haters,” and the rise of Christian nationalism. And, in this Advent season, we'll ask: What needs to come to an end? And what new future are we longing for? We'll also hear what David is working on now, what he's seeing in the classroom, and what he hopes for in 2026.  SHOW NOTESSupport the showBecome a Patron - Click on the link to learn how you can become a Patron of the show. Someone argues that Donald Trump threatens democracy, maybe because he's asserting authority against the judiciary or the media or the NGOs. Someone else counterargues that it hardly seems undemocratic for someone to favor someone who won an election (the President) over other people who did not (the judiciary, the media). If anything, it seems undemocratic to allow the unelected people to continue to obstruct and harass elected leaders. The most common response is to say that fine, democracy is about who wins votes, but we also like liberalism, liberalism is under threat, it's too hard to talk about “liberalism” because in the US it sometimes means being left-wing, and so we use the related concept “democracy” as a stand-in. This is reasonable, and some accused-democracy-destroyers like Viktor Orban even accept it for themselves, calling their brand of government “illiberal democracy”. But I think there's an even stronger response that doesn't require admitting to a bait-and-switch: democracy isn't just about having an election. It's about having more than one election. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/defining-defending-democracy-contra

American democracy is in danger. How do we protect it from authoritarian reactionary Christianity? On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Americans stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of their political opponent's election. At the forefront were Christians claiming to act in the name of Jesus Christ and his supposed representative on earth, Donald Trump. How can this have happened? David P. Gushee tackles the question in this timely work of Christian political ethics. Gushee calls us to preserve democratic norms, including constitutional government, the rule of law, and equal rights for all, even as many Christians take a reactionary and antidemocratic stance. Surveying global politics and modern history, he analyzes how Christians have discarded their commitment to democracy and bought into authoritarianism. He urges us to fight back by reviving our hard-won traditions of congregational democracy, dissident Black Christian politics, and covenantal theology. Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies makes a robust case for a renewed commitment to democracy on the part of Christians—not by succumbing to secular liberalism, but by drawing on our own best traditions. Any concerned Christian will leave its pages with eyes wide open to the dangers of our current form of political engagement. Readers will gain insight into what democracy is truly meant to be and why Christians once supported it wholeheartedly—and should do so again. This conversation and book talk with David P. Gushee and Kristin Kobes Du Mez took place on March 15, 2024 and was sponsored by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Schuler Books, and the Kaufman Interfaith Institute. Theme music "Nigal."

Last year, after pressure from activist investors, Jeff Lawson stepped down from his perch as CEO from Twilio, the cloud communications company he co-founded. But he didn't spend any time twiddling his thumbs — that same spring, he bought the satirical news organization The Onion, and by the end of the year, they'd tried to buy Alex Jones' Infowars at a bankruptcy auction.  Jeff also stayed busy on the political front, continuing his work on DemocracyFirst, a political action committee he co-founded, in 2022, to support candidates committed to democracy.  So there was plenty to chew on when Kara interviewed Jeff last week at Democracy's Information Dilemma, a symposium hosted by the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. They discuss the tech founder mindset; how Jeff is remaking The Onion; why political satire is more necessary than ever; why DEI — which Jeff championed as a CEO — can sometimes do more harm than good; and how to fight for democracy during Trump 2.0. U.S. Aid Is Crucial to Defending Democracy in Latin America

Trend Lines

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2025 7:38

"Why are there never coup attempts inside the United States?" an old joke among left-wing activists in Latin America goes. "Because there is no U.S. embassy there." It's a reference to U.S. actions during the Cold War to undermine democratically elected governments across the region, including Guatemalan President Jacobo Arbenz in the 1950s and Chilean President Salvador Allende in the 1970s. Under the auspices of fighting communism, Washington backed right-wing military coups and dictatorships throughout the hemisphere. As late as the 1980s, Jeanne Kirkpatrick - a foreign policy adviser to then-President Ronald Reagan who later served as his ambassador to the United Nations - issued a defense of authoritarian regimes that she believed helped to protect their populations from even worse revolutionary ideologies. But the joke was outdated even before January 2021, when then-U.S. President Donald Trump tried to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. In fact, over recent decades, the view of the United States as a defender of authoritarianism, at least in Latin America, has become an anachronism. Eventually, Washington lent support to the Concertacion coalition that defeated then-dictator Augusto Pinochet at the polls and led to the reestablishment of democracy in Chile in 1990. And in 2001, the U.S. backed the Inter-American Democratic Charter, which clearly states in its opening that "[t]he peoples of the Americas have a right to democracy and their governments have an obligation to promote and defend it," while promising to remove nondemocratic governments from various hemispheric institutions. More recently, perhaps the top three achievements of former President Joe Biden's policies in Latin America all came in defense of democracy. His administration supported a democratic transition in Honduras in 2021 after Xiomara Castro defeated the ruling National Party's candidate in the country's presidential election that year. Washington then had outgoing President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who had stolen Honduras' 2017 presidential election, extradited on drug-trafficking charges so he could no longer interfere in domestic politics. A year later, Biden's team pressured Brazil's military leadership to stay clear of a coup attempt led by outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won that country's presidential election in 2022. And the Biden team safeguarded an incredibly difficult presidential transition in Guatemala at the end of 2023 to ensure that President Bernardo Arevalo took office, overcoming the efforts of that country's corrupt elites to keep him from power. The U.S. record is far from perfect, and this column will no doubt provoke responses detailing the many wrongs Washington has committed in the region in recent years. But the U.S. really did shift toward a more pro-democracy stance in Latin America since the end of the Cold War. As part of that shift, the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, funded numerous local NGOs that promoted human rights and anti-corruption efforts. The National Endowment for Democracy - a government-funded semi-autonomous organization - backed training for political parties and civil society that contributed to grassroots civic activism at the heart of democratic values, winning NED the hatred of authoritarian leaders who viewed those efforts as a violation of their sovereignty. Various other U.S. agencies also provide grants for research and think tank work that is critical to policy debates in the region. All those efforts go beyond the specific episodes, such as those by the Biden administration, when the U.S. government backed a democratic movement at a critical moment. They were cooked into U.S. policy in nearly every country. That is not to say that U.S. support is the only thing sustaining democracy in Latin America. Democracy can't be imposed from abroad. The biggest efforts come from the people of Latin America, who work to impr...
