I'm delighted to speak with Dave Bright and Dr Oliver Runswick in this episode. Dave is a coach and Senior Lecturer in Sport Coaching at Chichester University. His main research interests are in motor learning and its application to practical sport coaching. Dave has coached martial arts for 25+ years. And it was from his experiences in coaching that led him to do a Sport Science Coaching degree, then a Sport & Exercise Psychology Masters degree. Dave's current role requires him to develop undergraduate students as sport coaches, providing them with an awareness and understanding of the underpinning motor learning and coaching research. Dave is undertaking a PhD investigating the effects of cognitive load and autonomous task selection in motor learning. Ollie is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London. His research focuses on understanding and enhancing learning and performance in domains including sport, dance, education, and the military. Ollie is the Editor in Chief of Perceptual and Motor Learning Skills at Sage Publishing and a Human Performance Technology Consultant providing consultancy in virtual reality applications, skill acquisition and motor learning, perceptual-cognitive skill, training/practice design, talent ID and development, vision in performance and performance systems. Ollie received a first-class BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Swansea University, MSc in Human Movement Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, PGCHE from St Mary's University, and PhD from Liverpool Hope University where he studied perceptual-motor skills based with St Mary's University's Expertise and Skill Acquisition Research Group. Dave, Ollie and I discuss a paper they co-wrote along with Dr Jenny Smith, Dr Philip Kearney which compares two learning conditions - task-related autonomy and cognitive effort. Research has shown that both feelings of autonomy (as supported by OPTIMAL theory) and cognitive effort (as supported by Challenge Point) can positively impact skill development. This research paper aimed to compare these two approaches to learning. Results showed no differences between the effects of autonomy and cognitive effort, but uncovered participants use of tactical learning to improve. We unpack the paper and discuss its real-world application for coaching settings.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After collapsing from heatstroke during the 2024 Brighton Marathon, Holly Rowlinson faced heartbreak and the loss of a long-held goal. With reflection and the support of St John Ambulance, Holly turned her setback into a purpose. A year later, she ran the 2025 London Marathon, raising over £2,000 for the charity who helped her back to her feet.
What makes a long-term pastorate successful? How do internships shape future ministers? And what does it look like to grow as a preacher over decades of ministry? In this episode of the Expositors Collective Podcast, Rev. Dr. Danny Hyde joins Mike Neglia to talk about his journey in ministry—from an eager young preacher to a seasoned pastor who has mentored over 20 pastoral interns and remained in one pulpit for over 25 years.Danny shares his first-ever sermon experience, his training at Westminster Seminary California, and the hard-won wisdom that came from being torn apart in homiletics class by Edmund Clowney,—only to be built back up by a compassionate mentor. He reflects on how becoming a father shaped his approach to pastoring, how relational ministry is just as important as doctrinal fidelity, and why internships are crucial for developing pastors who truly love preaching and love people.Other key topics include:The Cage-Stage Calvinist Years – What he's learned since his early years of ministry. The Role of Internships – How he mentors young men for the challenges of pastoral ministry. Why Long-Term Ministry Matters – The stability and intergenerational impact of staying in one congregation.Simplicity and Clarity in Preaching – Why he's working harder than ever to communicate with brevity and focus. Two Loves Every Pastor Needs – Why loving preaching isn't enough—you must also love your people.Drawing from his Ph.D. research on John Owen, his pastoral ministry, and his experience training future pastors, Danny offers wisdom for both young preachers and seasoned ministers alike. Bio - Rev. Dr. Danny HydeRev. Dr. Danny Hyde is the pastor of Oceanside United Reformed Church in California, where he has served since 2000. His denominational service includes roles on committees for church planting, digital media in worship, and doctrinal commitment within the United Reformed Churches in North America (URCNA).As a scholar, he has authored over a dozen books, including This Is the Word of the Lord, Grace Worth Fighting For, Welcome to a Reformed Church, and God in Our Midst. His writing frequently explores Reformed theology, church planting, and worship, and he is widely recognized for his expertise on the theology of John Owen and the Canons of Dort.Beyond his academic work, Dr. Hyde is passionate about mentoring the next generation of pastors, preaching with clarity and simplicity, and staying rooted in long-term pastoral ministry. In this conversation, he shares insights from 25 years of pastoring, the challenges and blessings of long-term ministry, and why loving people is as important as loving to preach.——————For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches.

Learn about new models in academic publishing that could better serve academia by helping scholars get their work into the public sphere more readily, removing financial barriers for authors and readers and underpinning better research practices. We speak to two academics about the challenges associated with the dominant commercial academic publishing model and how they are seeking more effective ways to enable researchers to disseminate knowledge. Paul Ayris is pro-vice provost for library services at University College London and chief executive of UCL Press which he founded 10 years ago as the UK's first fully open access university press.

Elon Musk (o.a.
Tijd verspillen? Even helemaal nietsdoen?
Key Points Discussed:Defining Ethical Hacking: Ethical hackers use their skills to identify and report vulnerabilities, often to enhance cybersecurity in various capacities, including voluntary work, bug bounty programs, or professional roles.Research Focus: Dr. Kranenbarg's studies highlight a significant overlap between positive and negative cyber behaviors, particularly among IT students, and explore how individuals transition toward ethical hacking.Ethical Hacking as a Pathway:Early positive experiences, such as reporting vulnerabilities to schools or organizations, can strongly influence individuals toward ethical hacking.Responses from organizations play a critical role—positive reinforcement encourages further ethical behavior, while negative experiences can deter individuals.Challenges in Defining Ethics:Ethical hackers themselves debate the boundaries of what constitutes ethical behavior, such as whether making vulnerabilities public is acceptable if organizations fail to act.The term "ethical hacker" is often contentious within the community.Role of Education: Schools struggle to address and guide ethical behavior among IT students effectively. Clear vulnerability disclosure policies and ethics education in IT programs are crucial.Future Research Directions: Dr. Kranenbarg plans to conduct life-history interviews with hackers to better understand their pathways and influences toward ethical behavior.About our Guest:Dr Marleen Weulen Kranenbarghttps://research.vu.nl/en/persons/marleen-weulen-kranenbarg Papers or Resources Mentioned:Weulen Kranenbarg, M. Listen to this interview of Floris Gorter, PhD student, and Cristiano Giuffrida, Associate Professor — both at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands. We talk about their coauthored paper Sticky Tags: Efficient and Deterministic Spatial Memory Error Mitigation using Persistent Memory Tags (SP 2024). Cristiano Giuffrida : "But apart from applying for positions on PCs, early-career researchers can also learn the linguistic norms of their community by reading. Good researchers just read a lot of papers — papers from across their broader communities, and especially papers from the top venues where the communities publish. Because by doing that, you learn the language — you start seeing and understanding the patterns in communication. Like, 'Oh, people write the Introduction like this' — you know, there's a problem statement, and there's emphasis placed on this and that, and there are certain keywords that convey certain drifts. So, you begin picking up the language." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Listen to this interview of Mathé Hertogh, PhD student, and Cristiano Giuffrida, Associate Professor — both in the Department of Computer Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands. We talk about their coauthored paper Leaky Address Masking: Exploiting Unmasked Spectre Gadgets with Noncanonical Address Translation (SP 2024). Cristiano Giuffrida : "In security research and AI research — in fact, in AI it's happening even more — there are so many groups, so many researchers working on similar problems, that as a result, we have a lot of papers — a lot of papers being submitting and published at the venues, a lot of papers being constantly put online, for example, on arXiv — so that, all in all, the pressure on researchers to keep up is very high — we just need to read more and more and more papers. So, in answer to this, there is also a growing trend in the writing in papers, and this is, to ensure that the reader can get the maximum amount of information in as little time as possible." That's The Spirit videoplatform. In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I explore how Felienne Hermans, creator of the Hedy platform, is reshaping programming education for the next generation. Hedy is an open-source, free platform designed to help children aged 10 and above learn textual programming across multiple languages. With an impressive 500,000 monthly users and translations into 49 languages—including Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish—Hedy is not only accessible but also adaptable to diverse learning environments. Felienne, a professor of computer science education at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a high-school teacher in the Codasium program, brings a unique perspective on how we need to radically rethink programming education. She shares the inspiration behind Hedy's development, highlighting how the platform breaks away from traditional teaching models by offering step-by-step, relatable exercises that engage students in a meaningful way. From stories and drawings to music, Hedy's approach goes far beyond the typical abstract exercises found in traditional programming lessons. Felienne also dives into the important role that native languages and culture play in fostering stronger connections between young learners and programming. By allowing students to code in their native languages, Hedy is promoting inclusivity and engagement, making technology feel more relevant and attainable. In this conversation, we explore why it's crucial for parents and educators to introduce children to coding early, and how tools like Hedy can help them do so in a way that's both enjoyable and effective. Felienne also shares her top tips for teaching children to code, offering insights from her own journey as both an educator and a developer. We discuss how to cultivate curiosity in young learners, why programming skills are essential for the future workforce, and how platforms like Hedy are preparing students for the future of technology. What do you think the future holds for programming education? Could tools like Hedy spark a global movement in coding literacy? Listen in and share your thoughts!
Our guest for episode 99 is Frédérique Six, Associate Professor of Public Governance at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a visiting professor at the GOVTRUST Centre of Excellence at the University of Antwerp. She explores the complex relationship between trust and control within organizations, particularly those that perform public tasks such as healthcare, education, and policing. She explains two main perspectives on the relationship between trust and control. The traditional view sees them as substitutes, where more control means less trust, and vice versa. However, she advocates for a more nuanced view, where trust and control can complement each other. When controls are experienced as enabling rather than coercive, they help build trust by promoting fairness, predictability, and ethical behavior. She also discusses her use of motivation theory, which distinguishes between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. According to this theory, employees perform better when their basic psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—are met. Frédérique explains how these needs are influenced by control systems and how this balance affects both trust and motivation within organizations. Frédérique highlights the multifaceted nature of trust, noting that it is context-dependent but guided by a universal sequence: a trustor assesses the trustworthiness of a trustee and decides whether to take a trusting action based on that assessment. She explains that while trust is influenced by situational factors, there are common elements across different contexts, which makes trust a universal yet complex phenomenon. As the discussion concludes, Frédérique reflects on the challenges faced by young researchers studying trust. She believes that identifying and challenging deeply held beliefs about trust and control will be crucial for advancing trust-based governance. While this is high-risk research, she encourages young professionals to question the status quo to drive meaningful change.
Felienne is the creator of Hedy, an open-source and accessible platform for kids aged ten and above to learn textual programming in multiple languages. The platform has about 500K users a month. It has been translated into 49 languages, including Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish, and has 400+ volunteer programmers, translators, and teachers who continuously improve and maintain it. To teach a child programming, a parent or teacher can use Hedy's built-in lesson plans or customize their kid's learning experience by authoring their lessons and loading these into Hedy's user interface. Felienne holds a Ph.D. in Software Engineering and has been a strong advocate for finding better ways of teaching programming and guiding the young generation into the programming world for more than ten years. She is also a professor of computer science education at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands and a high-school computer science teacher one day a week at Lyceum Kralingen in the Codasium program, which teaches kids to code. On the podcast, Felienne would love to talk about: We must radically transform how we teach kids programming languages to prepare them for the next wave of computing. Breaking Barriers: The role natural languages and culture play in forging the future of programming. Why every parent should encourage their child to learn coding skills, and Felienne's best tips for teaching kids how to code. https://www.felienne.com/ https://hedy.org/ https://www.codasium.nl/ Summary Discussing Programming, Coding, and Hetty Michael and Felienne discussed the importance of learning programming and coding at a young age, especially in an increasingly technology-driven society. They planned to focus their conversation on Hedy, a project Felienne is working on. Michael emphasized the significance of Felienne's work and expressed his interest in understanding more about it. Felienne Hermans' Journey in Teaching Programming to Children Felienne Hermans, a university professor and school teacher specializing in teaching programming to children, discussed her journey into this field. She initially focused on professional programmers but switched to teaching 12-13-year-olds after realizing the potential impact of introducing programming skills to the next generation. Felienne shared her challenges while teaching her students Scratch and Python, including the language barrier and syntax difficulty. She then shared how she created a simplified Python programming language in Dutch, which grew into a globally used open-source project supporting 56 languages. This project also became a significant research area due to its technical and academic challenges. Felienne's Multilingual Programming Tools Initiative Michael appreciates Felienne's initiative to create programming tools in multiple languages, allowing more people worldwide to participate in coding. He shares an anecdote about a student struggling with code, emphasizing the importance of taking breaks to gain a fresh perspective. Felianne agrees, noting that her dual roles as teacher and product developer allow her to identify areas for improvement. She highlights that programming teaches both coding and problem-solving, and resilience. Programming Skills and Student Education felienne and Michael discussed the value of programming and problem-solving skills in students. felienne emphasized the importance of teaching students to analyze and understand code rather than memorize it. Michael concurred, highlighting that these skills help in coding and other areas of life, such as problem-solving and communication. They both agreed that students should understand that technology is human-made and that programming is essential in creating and maintaining it. AI, Coding, and Life Skills felienne and Michael discussed the potential and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI). Michael emphasized that AI will likely create new job opportunities and free up people for other tasks, but it's crucial to understand the coding behind it. He used a coffee machine analogy to explain that while AI can simplify tasks, people should still be able to perform them without it. felienne agreed, highlighting the importance of learning coding as a life skill. They both expressed concern about the current generation's reliance on technology and the need to understand the underlying systems. Balancing Consumption and Creation in Digital Age felienne and Michael discussed the imbalance between consumption and creation in the digital world, with Felienne expressing concern that children are not encouraged to be creators. They both agreed on encouraging and fostering creativity among future generations.

Ongeveer 1,2 miljoen mensen in Nederland slikken antidepressiva. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The defining feature of this textbook is the treatment of classical and New Testament Greek as one language using primary sources. All the example sentences the students will translate are real Greek sentences, half of which are taken from classical literature and philosophy and half of which are directly from the New Testament. The advantage of this approach is that it highlights the linguistic, literary, and historical connections between classical Greece and early Christianity. Rather than having students memorize isolated tables and artificial sentences, Michael Boler spent years combing through thousands of pages of literature, philosophy, and scripture to find short, powerful sentences that not only teach the grammatical concepts in each chapter, but also contain seeds of wisdom that will spark wonder and discussion. Introduction to Classical and New Testament Greek: A Unified Approach (Catholic U of America Press, 2019) is born out of classroom experience in a Catholic liberal arts university whose students were disappointed to be forced to choose between textbooks that taught classical Greek in isolation and ones that focused exclusively on the New Testament. By the end of this book, students will have read over 200 lines of scripture and an equal amount of ancient literature from Homer to Aristotle. They will also have the grammatical knowledge to continue to read classical and New Testament Greek. Each chapter contains a section at the end that delves deeply into the etymology and background of the words and passages encountered in the respective chapter. Professors will thus be able to use these chapters as a bridge to philosophical, theological, historical, and literary topics that will enrich the class. Michael Boler is director and associate professor of classics as well as the director of the honors programs at University of St. Thomas, Houston. Justin McGeary is director of Christian studies at John Witherspoon College, a PhD candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Union School of Theology, Wales, and tutor at Trinity House Tutorials.
