This episode of The Evolving Faith Podcast features: Shocking news that both Fozzie and Sarah fall off of couches when they nap. Jasper Peters' talk from the Evolving Faith 2019 conference where he starts with the question, “What happens when the things we were taught about the Bible don't turn out to be true?”  He discusses how the Bible has been used as a weapon against so many people throughout history and how this same text can be used as liberation for the least of these here and now.  Jasper ends by encouraging us to abandon the battleground for biblical authority and reclaim the power Scripture has for those who engage the text.  Following Jasper's talk, Jeff and Sarah discuss how our faith traditions influence how we read Scripture. In this week's episode of Field Preachers, you'll hear about Tony Arnold and the online discipleship he offers at his online-only faith community out of Christ Church in Virginia. Jasper Peters of Belong Church in Colorado will also share about effective online communication and how pastors can be allies in the Black Lives Matter movement. In March of 1739, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, engaged in "field preaching" for the first time after being encouraged by his friend and fellow preacher George Whitefield. Instead of preaching his sermon from a pulpit, Wesley went out from the church and preached in the open air to those who didn't have the time or money to sit in a pew and hear the good news. Thousands of people, mainly those struggling with poverty, came to hear him preach that first week and the revival of Methodism was born as the good news became real in the hearts of those who heard about God's love and grace. Church planters are modern day "field preachers" who go out from the established church into the community where they proclaim good news to those who need it most. This podcast is a series of interviews and stories from modern-day Methodist field preachers who will make you laugh, cry, and think more deeply about how and where we are called to share God's love and grace.

Acknowledging failure is not easy to do in any circumstance. This is specifically true when it comes to discussing the Church's failure to live up to its call from God to do the work of justice. Reckoning with the failure of Christians to make justice efforts more than mere words may be a hard pill to swallow for some, yet it could also be the most faithful next step on the road to change. Are not confession and repentance essential parts of the Christian life? Joining us to discuss this is Rev. Jasper Peters who serves as Lead Pastor of Belong Church. Belong is a United Methodist community in Denver, Colorado with an orientation towards the work of justice, a work that has animated Jasper's life and calling. Jasper leads with an acute recognition of the ways that the Church has not lived up to goals of invitation, embracing, and personal/societal transformation. With the marriage of mercy and justice, Jasper and Belong seek to help people grow in faithfulness to the work of the Kingdom of God.Chris and Eddie talk to Jasper about the need for the Church to recognize both its failure to do the work of justice and the unique opportunities that exist to repent. Specifically, they talk about the importance of recognizing the true, non-romanticized state of our past and present as we press on towards a more faithful future. This conversation is one worth engaging multiple times as we learn from Jasper's story, wisdom, and vision for the people of the Body of Christ.ResourcesEddie references a video of Jasper's where he reflects on why the term “racial reconciliation” is not an accurate representation of the work that the Church needs to take on. From an early age, this planter was on a journey to find a place to belong. God used his desire to create a new faith community that is diverse, inclusive, and social justice-oriented so that everyone can find a spiritual home. Join us this week for an incredible conversation with Jasper Peters of Belong Church in Colorado. In March of 1739, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, engaged in "field preaching" for the first time after being encouraged by his friend and fellow preacher George Whitefield. The most common phrase in the Sermon on the Mount, “You have heard it said ... but I tell you …” (Matt 5.21-48). In these verses, Jesus talks about murder, oaths, adultery, divorce, retaliation and love for our enemies. This was a new teaching in his day that was provacative, and we will ask, “What can it teach us today?”
