Garden designer and professional gardener Alan Mason was a founder member of the Professional Gardeners' Guild. He became chairman 45 years later, taking over from Tony Arnold in September 2022."I avoided being chairman for as long as possible", he says. " I was vice chairman. I had been treasurer. I had been secretary, but it was never my desire to become chairman. It just happened."He has enjoyed the support of the "fabulous team" on the committee around him and says "in the last 12 months particularly there have been some very exciting developments. It's a great place to be at the moment."He talks about the focus for the Guild, which, as with all trade associations, is how to drive up the membership and also how best to serve it. The importance of visiting each others gardens and learning ways to cope with pest and diseases, planting tips and the like from other head gardeners is still key: "There's more information to be gleaned from other head gardeners than there is from Google."He wanted to be a footballer, but while waiting for his break, began a four-year horticultural apprenticeship and studied with the Institute of Groundsmanship and later Askham Bryan College. "I thought I might become a groundsman. Surely I'll get spotted kicking a football at lunchtime. I'll be playing for England in a fortnight. It never happened."After completing his studies he landed the job of head gardener at Bramham Park, a French style garden where in some ways, his learning was just beginning:"I always said I learnt more in the first six months as a head gardener than I had in eight years at college. And that's not meant to be a slur on what they taught me at Askham Bryan. It's just that when you're in position, you have to learn."Castle Howard's Brian Hutchinson formed the Professional Gardeners Guild around this time and Alan was offered the gardener's manager's job at Harewood House which is where he got his TV break when Yorkshire TV started filming there. After leaving Harewood in 1987 he set up a garden design business, got a contract in France, bought a 14th century manor house set in eight and a half acres and decided to create a garden there which Yorkshire TV (later on Channel 4) turned into Le Manoir - "and this was 25 years before Escape to the Chateau".Alan talks about PGG's work with horticultural charity Perennial and how he's looking to make links with other garden organisations including National Trust and Historic Houses. He's also involved with encouraging people into the industry via traineeships in collaboration with English Heritage, Historic and Botanic Gardens Trainee Programme and the MacRobert Trust. "It's so easy just to become an insular little group for head gardeners. And we don't want that at all. We want to be what Brian Hutchinson thought we should be at the very start, great for our own members, learning from each other."Alan talks about his view on pay grades for gardeners, financial pressures and how, post-Covid, many places have replaced professionals with volunteers."What the PGG does is offer a salaries and rates guideline...you can use that guideline to show to your employer...and very often it does help with negotiation."It is a negotiating tool, but it will never be perfect. But it is a great assistance. And I know that other professional bodies look to the PGG for our salaries and rates guideline and use it as a good example. Hosted on Acast. Turning 64 today is Soft Cell instrumentalist Dave Ball. So, here's Tainted Love. Also, today is a happy 64th birthday for Tony Arnold, who made 38 relief appearances for the Orioles between 1986 and 1987. Today's only other 64th birthday among the four major sports is former Arizona State running back Alvin Moore, which is not to slight Moore because he played five seasons in the NFL, it's just that those five seasons were split between three franchises in four cities: the Baltimore and Indianapolis Colts, the Detroit Lions, and the Seattle Seahawks. So, those who remember Moore, likely do so for his time with the Sun Devils, not necessarily the six carries for 15 yards, plus an eight-yard reception, against the Jets on Thanksgiving in 1985. Same for Arnold and Texas Longhorns baseball, but he had the single MLB team, also in Baltimore, albeit not at the same time as Moore. Have they ever had a birthday party together? Maybe they can get in touch today. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

Composer Nina Shekhar joins us to chat about her work exploring identity, vulnerability, love, and laughter in her work and her process for exploring such complex aspects of humanity in seemingly mundane experiences, such as the car horns on the streets of India. We talk about how she approaches the business side of a professional career in composition, and how her work as a flutist, saxophonist, and pianist has informed her comfort with a wide array of compositional styles. Soprano Tony Arnold joins us to chat about hopping careers from orchestral conductor to international superstar vocalist, her varied interests in how sound is made and how to harness sound to make it into something else, and the way her interests have helped in collaborations with all sorts of instrumentalists and in teaching composers how to help performers lift music off the page . We speak about how she developed the working knowledge necessary to decipher contemporary scores, the close connection between chamber music and contemporary music, and learning how to fit into the deeply intimate and idiomatic language of a string quartet with a long history that no longer required verbal communication. She shares about how her connection to George Crumb deepened on a trip to Charleston, WV and how community- and network-building play in forming long-lasting professional connections. We discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the impact of digitization on the shaping of the musical world and the importance of separating music-making from money-making as best as one can. Celebrated as a “luminary in the world of chamber music and art song” (Huffington Post), Tony Arnold is internationally acclaimed as a leading proponent of contemporary music in concert and recording, a “convincing, mesmerizing soprano” (Los Angeles Times) who “has a broader gift for conveying the poetry and nuance behind outwardly daunting contemporary scores” (Boston Globe). Her unique blend of vocal virtuosity and communicative warmth, combined with wide-ranging skills in education and leadership were recognized with the 2015 Brandeis Creative Arts Award, given in appreciation of “excellence in the arts and the lives and works of distinguished, active American artists.” Ms. Arnold's extensive chamber music repertory includes major works written for her voice by Georges Aperghis, George Crumb, Brett Dean, Jason Eckardt, Gabriela Lena Frank, Josh Levine, George Lewis, Philippe Manoury, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Christopher Theofanidis, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, and numerous others. She is a member of the intrepid International Contemporary Ensemble, and enjoys regular guest appearances with leading ensembles, presenters and festivals worldwide. With more than thirty discs to her credit, Ms. Arnold has recorded a broad segment of the modern vocal repertory with esteemed chamber music colleagues. Her recording of George Crumb's iconic Ancient Voices of Children (Bridge) received a 2006 Grammy nomination. She is a first-prize laureate of both the Gaudeamus International and the Louise D. McMahon competitions. A graduate of Oberlin College and Northwestern University, Ms. Arnold was twice a fellow of the Aspen Music Festival as both a conductor and singer. She was the 2015-16 Kunkemueller Artist-In-Residence at the Boston Conservatory, and currently serves on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center. Instead of preaching his sermon from a pulpit, Wesley went out from the church and preached in the open air to those who didn't have the time or money to sit in a pew and hear the good news. Thousands of people, mainly those struggling with poverty, came to hear him preach that first week and the revival of Methodism was born as the good news became real in the hearts of those who heard about God's love and grace. Also, Governor Pritzker signed a new law raising the minimum salaries of teachers; a photo taken at a state senator’s fundraising event that showed two people staging a mock assassination of President Trump made national headlines, and Chicago’s new mayor is weighing her options on closing the city’s budget deficit. Ratings agencies-which determine how fiscally stable a government entity is, which ultimately determines how much it will cost that government to borrow money-have taken a dim view of Illinois’ finances over the last several years. But this week, the state was offered a glimmer of hope. Erik Kim, Senior Director at Fitch Ratings in NYC, believes that the governor and the legislature are taking the right steps to eventually get the state out of it’s financial mess.Plus State Senator Tom Cullerton is under investigation for his alleged involvement in a no-show job for the teamsters. The announcement by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to not seek re-election sent shock waves through the city and cracked February's election wide open. There are the questions of "What's next for the exiting mayor?", "Will there be even more names on the ballot than the eleven already there?", and "Is there more to this decision that meets the eye?" WBEZ Politics Reporters Becky Vevea and Tony Arnold joined Jill Hopkins on The Morning AMp to discuss what the announcement means for the upcoming elections.

Ken Davis is joined by Tony Arnold, WBEZ’s State Politics Reporter, Hal Dardick, investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune and Heather Cherone, City Hall reporter for the Daily Line. They discuss this week’s raucous meeting at the Chicago City Council in which about a hundred police officers showed up to express their frustration with slow progress toward a police contract, and hundreds of other protesters vented their concerns that too much money was being directed toward Mayor Emanuel’s proposed police training academy. But, as Cherone reports, all sides seemed united in their displeasure with Mayor Emanuel. The approval for the Obama Presidential Center sailed through, but not without a lone dissenter, Ald. David Moore. Moore and Ald. Carolos Ramirez-Rosa were highly visible dissenters at the meeting, and shortly afterward the Latino Caucus announced that it had expelled Ramirez-Rosa. Tony Arnold provided an update on WBEZ’s ongoing investigation into deaths at the Illinois Veteran’s Home, and their most recent revelation that one victim probably remained in her room for as much as 48 hours before being discovered by the staff. The panel also considered Governor Rauner’s re-write of a bill to license the State’s gun stores and extend the “cooling-off’ period to 72 hours for assault weapons. He extended the waiting period to all guns and reinstated the death penalty – a proposal that seemed to leave politicians on both sides of the aisle scratching their heads. This program was produced by Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV).

Läs om Tania Leóns på nätet: http://www.tanialeon.com/ http://chevalierdesaintgeorges.homestead.com/leon.html  Musiklista:Inura: VIII ManifestTania LeónSON SONORA DANCE BRAZIL PERCUSSIONCD: Tania León: In Motion           El maniseroArr: Tania LeónChanticleer (san francisco)CD: Wondrous Love - A Folk Song Collection Satiné, Quattro ManiTania LeónSusan Grace, piano.
