My guest Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell, AO FAHA FTSE is an Australian anthropologist best known for her work at the intersection of cultural practice and technological development. She taught Anthropology at Stanford before being recruited to Intel in 1998 to build out their social-science research program in their advanced R&D labs. There, Bell and colleagues helped orient Intel to a more market-inspired and experience-driven approach, establishing Intel's UX competency and, indeed, introducing the viability of UX research within high technology. Together with Paul Dourish, she wrote the book 'Divining a Digital Future: Mess and Mythology in Ubiquitous Computing', an exploration of the social and cultural components of ubiquitous computing. In 2017 she returned to Australia, appointed as Entrepreneurial Fellow and distinguished professor at Australian National University's College of Engineering and Computer Science where she directs the School of Cybernetics and the Autonomy, Agency & Assurance Institute. In our conversation I refer to her recent paper in the MIT Technology Review, 'The metaverse is a new word for an old idea' I mention this short documentary “You've Never Been Completely Honest” by Joey Izzo. (Trigger warnings apply — read the interview with Izzo before watching to figure out if you really want to watch it.) Genevieve mentions an audio recording of Gregory Bateson called "Versailles to Cybernetics" and a recording Stewart Brand made with Bateson and Margaret Meade that is in a kind of annotated transcript here: "For God's Sake Margaret!" "Cybernetic Serendipity" is the exhibition she mentions curated by Jasia Reichardt. Please consider supporting this podcast! You can do so over here at patreon.com/nearfuturelaboratory. I'm joined by filmmaking duo JOSH PIKOVSKY and JORDAN TETEWSKY (Hannah Ha Ha) who have challenged me to watch the disturbingly moist 2013 Alexsei German film HARD TO BE A GOD. The only thing that could be MORE fun than watching a remarkably dense, disgusting, three-hour Russian antifilm about a bunch of alien sh*t perverts is listening to a three hour discussion led by a gaggle of severely brain-damaged goofballs trying to make sense of it all without doing a vom! We get into which one of the Beatles is the most innocent, Jordan can't keep his shirt on and makes some shocking confessions, and I teach the boys about milk parties. After dark, we get into The American Friend, Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs, American Movie, Mutual Appreciation, Z, Norma Ray, Harlan County USA, Ear Ache, Alex Kavutskiy's Guide to Filmmaking, I was There Too by Joey Izzo, Stilts by Dylan Holmes Williams, Yorgos Lanthimos films The Lobster, Dogtooth, Kinetta, Necktie, and Nimic, the Batman. and Serenity by Jack Dunphy. Paco Romane and George Chen welcome comedians Anna Seregina and Dave Ross (Terrified podcast) to the Sup Doc living room. They discuss the much hyped documentary The Wolfpack (2015, Crystal Moselle). The Wolfpack is a documentary film about a family who homeschooled and raised their seven children in the confinement of their apartment in the Lower East Side of New York City. Locked away in an apartment in the Lower East Side of Manhattan for fourteen years, the Angulo family's seven children—six brothers named Mukunda, Narayana, Govinda, Bhagavan, Krisna (Glenn), and Jagadesh (Eddie), and their sister Visnu—learned about the world through watching films. They also re-enact scenes from their favorite movies. They were homeschooled by their mother and confined to their 16th-storey four-bedroom apartment in the Seward Park Extension housing project. In January 2010, against their father's instruction to remain inside. All the brothers then decided to begin exploring Manhattan and the world outside. The Wolfpack on iTunes:Dave Ross is a stand-up comedian in Los Angeles. Sometimes his comedy is vulnerable and personal. Other times his comedy is loud, stupid and about butts. You can find him stumbling around L.A. and the country, performing at every festival, club, theater, bar, fire hall or bombed-out stone building that will have him. He's in a sketch group called WOMEN that makes sketches for Comedy Central and IFC's Comedy Crib. He won a MOTH Grand Slam, he got interviewed on WTF with Marc Maron, and he told a story on Comedy Central's Drunk History. He likes his cat. His cat's dope.Anna Seregina is a stand-up comic and performer, described as having the “worst aura.” She was named a “Comic to Watch” by the SF Weekly. She produces the Los Angeles branch of the long-running SF show “the Business.” She has appeared in comedy festivals (RIOT LA, SF Sketchfest, Bridgetown, Sacramento, Crom, SF Comedy Day, SF Comedy & Burrito), hosted music festivals (Panache’s Bruise Cruise, Phono del Sol), told stories at storytelling events (the Moth, Porchlight), and done weird things publicly (SF MoMA, Artists’ Television Access, SFAI, Public Access TV). She starred in Joey Izzo’s “Stepsister,” which screened at Cannes, San Francisco International, and Traverse City film festivals in 2013. Most facts about her are true. Most truths about her are facts.Follow us on:Twitter: @supdocpdocastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.
Dave and Anna are BACK! They are back from tour and they are BACK ONLINE. Here lies the first live episode they ever did in their home town of Los Angeles, and it's at their home theater, The Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown. It was so much fun. One of the best live shows either of them have done, podcast OR stand-up. Simon Gibson did stand-up, Joey Izzo showed some videos and Karen Kilgariff played some songs, each followed by an interview about fear and self-loathing. It's a weird mish-mash of media, jokes and screaming, and we think you'll love it. Tune in next week for a check in from Dave and Anna about their hiatus, returning from hiatus, where the show's been, where the show's going, and 90s radio hits. But right now, enjoy Terrified Live from NerdMelt. :)
French Press called up director Joey Izzo in L.A. to find out what makes him run. In turn, Joey opens up and lets us know that it's ok to be fearful--just go make your damn movie! Have a listen!
Joey Izzo is a filmmaker in Los Angeles, CA. He's great. Dave's a big fan of his. They talk about the oversaturation of people with art and culture and "content" in the modern world, and how they think its both hurt and helped their lives. They also talk about detachment from your loved ones, and not being present in your relationships. Near the end, they discussed changes in DAVE. It was a great conversation. They both thought so. For real.
