“American Movie” is a movie about … making a movie. When the beloved documentary was released in 1999, it quickly became a cult classic. “American Movie” was filmed in the Milwaukee area and its subject, Mark Borchardt, has gone on to inspire many artists and filmmakers. WPR’s Evan Casey takes a look at the film’s lasting legacy.

Your genial host Norm Wilner sees more of himself in this movie than he'd probably want to admit.

Can the show live up to last week's stellar episode? Hell yes, it turns out, as things get hotter and hotter for Oz (and some other folks as well). Homecoming is a packed episode where a ton of stuff happens and where the status quo changes in major, major ways, and we're here to break it all down. As part of that we ask questions like: does the Chief of Police think Sofia is the Hangman? Will Vic make it out of the show alive? And should The Penguin's villain lair be an abandoned cannery? Before that we have some news, and also some chatting about the movies. We talk about American Movie, Terrifier, Smile and more, and we debate whether or not Lanterns being "grounded" is a good thing. We do not debate the Creature Commandoes trailer, though - neither one of us are fans. Don't care about that? Jump to 40:04.See you next week, and also in a couple of days as we return for Agatha All Along!
In the tradition of art-world documentaries like Stop Making Sense and American Movie, Art Dealers follows eccentric rock-n-roll artist Adam Weiner aka Low Cut Connie, and his band as they attempt to mount a concert production of their recently released album "Art Dealers" for a three-night run in NYC. The stunning high-intensity performances are laid against a backdrop of five years of footage that shows an artist plagued by bad luck who attacks each performance with humor and stagecraft. If you've seen Hearts of Darkness, you can better appreciate what Coppola endured while making Apocalypse Now; if you've seen River of Dreams, you can watch in wonder as Herzog talks about the shooting Fitzcaraldo and really moving that boat through the jungle. American Movie (1999) aims to do the same thing for Mark Borchardt's low-budget independent horror film Coven. How you respond to American Movie depends on how you respond to Borchardt: is he simply a pretentious jerk who thinks he's the next George A. Romero? Or is he what Thomas Gray would call “some mute inglorious Milton,” whose work deserves a wider audience? In this episode, the guys mention the work of English poet Thomas Gray, whose famous “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” is applied to Mark Borchardt. Follow us on X and Letterboxd–and let us know what you'd like us to watch! Incredible bumper music by John Deley. On episode 230 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Josh Parham, and Karen Peterson to give their thoughts on The Fall Guy and discuss their favorite movies that are about making movies. The summer movie season is in full swing as stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt take to the big screen again, this time ditching their Barbie and Oppenheimer crews to come together for The Fall Guy, an action-adventure-romance spectacle about a stunt guy who is hired by a Hollywood producer to find the missing star (whom he used to double for) of a major studio film that is being directed by his ex-girlfriend. Lead by the chemistry between Gosling and Blunt, The Fall Guy is a kind of movie that “can remind you that going to the movies is a magical, highly entertaining experience.”, Ryan, Dan, Josh and Karen break down their reactions to the film, its underperformance at the box office, and why they think people should give it a shot and go see it before it leaves theaters. In the second half of the show, the gang discuss their favorite movies about movies, which is a big part of the overall plot of The Fall Guy, speaking a ton about the film industry and the personalities that are at the center of it. But movies about movies can be a multitude of things, ranging from being a love letter to the art form to an examination of the dangerous, heartbreaking mirage that fame and filmmaker can be. This allowed the team to talk about a wide selection of films that included Sunset Boulevard, Get Shorty, Singin' in the Rain, The Player, American Movie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Sullivan's Travels, Ed Wood, Dolemite Is My Name, Pain and Glory, Mank, and many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h47m. On our next episode, we will be discussing the latest release from A24, I Saw the TV Glow, and revealing our top five A24 films. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro)

American Movie is a documentary released in 1999 and has changed my life in many ways, I wish I was kidding! This heartbreaking, harrowing, and hilarious journey into one man's quest to make a short film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 1999 and is truly unlike anything I've ever seen!

This week Matt and I discuss my favorite documentary, American Movie. Since we recorded on Thanksgiving week I decided to break out the Wild Turkey 101 12 year old. We compare it with regular 101 and a Stearns Store pick of Kentucky Spirit that is 10 years old.
Today, Secret Movie Club Team Members Edwin Gomez and Craig Hammill discuss Terry Zwigoff's breakout 1990's documentary CRUMB about underground comic book artist R. Crumb and his dysfunctional brothers. Both Edwin and Craig talk about how a second viewing really emphasizes how heavy Crumb's home life was. We nominate some other powerful "dark" documentaries. Edwin name checks the Maysles' 1960's key work SALESMAN and Errol Morris's 1980's THE THIN BLUE LINE. Craig talks about Claude Lanzmann's 1980's masterwork SHOAH and Joshua Oppenheimer's 2012 THE ACT OF KILLING. Edwin talks the re-opening of the Vista and Craig mentions how much he likes David Fincher's new movie THE KILLER. (This Pod acts as a kind of Part II to SMC Pod #94 which looked at AMERICAN MOVIE and the documentary genre).
