The MacIver Staff discusses a new MacIver report that reveals major state agencies in Wisconsin have no budget. How is that possible? Hey friend! In this week's podcast I'm chatting with Amy who wants her home to feel bright and airy, but she has a problem. The dark kitchen cabinets, the black countertop and the black tile floor, along with the black dining table are all keeping her from realizing her goals. But with no room in the budget to make these BIG foundational changes to her home, Amy is wanting to know her options. Amy has a couple options: 1. Spend a lot of money she doesn't have replacing everything in the style that she likes it now (not a feasible option). 2. Do nothing and continue hating her home and the way it looks, waiting and wishing for the day when the funds are available for option 1. 3. Learn which changes she can make to lighten up her space, using what she currently has and bringing in supporting items to lighten her open concept home WHILE making it look cohesive. Option 3 may sound too good to be true, but the truth is we often times only see option 1 and option 2 as likely possibilities. When you work within your own understanding of a skill, sometimes you don't see the third option. Decorating SOS Coaching Calls are meant to help you see the third option. They're designed to help you get unstuck in what ever is keeping you from reaching your home goals. What did Amy learn? She actually has a really great start at having a light and airy home. There's no need to paint anything. And the black table that she though was a bully - the recommendation was to actually keep it as is, but to change up other things in the room. You'll hear my strategy for combatting darkness, how furniture carries a visual weight with it and how strategic layers will not only make her space feel lighter and brighter, but more cozy too. And all of those suggested changes will help her bully of a kitchen feel more cohesive with the rest of her home. Recorded live at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Academy Award®-nominated director (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) — and Dolby Institute Fellowship winner — Carlos López Estrada brings together another all-star panel of Hollywood talent, this time posing the question: Is “No Budget Filmmaking” even possible in this day and age? “There's just so much pressure on a film and on a filmmaker that has nothing to do with the film being good, or them arriving at their artistic voice. I've worked on zero-dollar budgets, I've worked recently on $150 million budgets. And the problems on both ends of the spectrum are exactly the same. Your energy and your attention goes to so many places that have nothing to do with the actual movie, have nothing to do with the art, because of the capitalistic requirements of us, as artists. And if we really care about art and we really care about cinema… We have to change the way we talk about cinema… We want to advance the medium and we want to have a discourse around film that is not just, ‘did you like it? Did you hate it? Did it make money?'”—Justin Simien, Film & Television Producer, Writer, and DirectorToday's panel includes independent filmmakers:- Bao Nguyen (The Greatest Night in Pop, Be Water)- Rishi Rajani (The Chi, Being Mary Tyler Moore, A Thousand and One)- Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair, Hollywood Black)Once again, this discussion was part of Antigravity Academy's Satellite Sessions — free monthly conversations with high-level individuals in film and tv, whose objective is to decentralize resources/information and make them available to as many up-and-coming filmmakers as possible — co-presented by CAPE USA (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment). Rep. Tim Burchett says if we don't have a border, he's not voting for a budget. This is the biggest issue facing our country right now. It's fentanyl, it's $400 billion a year, it's throwing elections because these border crossers are going to use mail-in ballots because you don't have to show ID. It puts our national security at risk when thousands of Chinese come, crossing 2 or 3 continents to get here. Burchett says there's something really bad and nefarious going on. The Congressman is still optimistic about Speaker Johnson who has a one seat majority. He has to be careful when he goes to the floor that the Democrats aren't in the majority and can take over. Burchett expects 20 million Americans who decided to stay home in 2020 over mean tweets to now do what's right for this country. This next election is for all the marbles. The Marxists are in control and they're openly defiant. They openly attack our country, our values, our religious beliefs, everything we hold near and dear. And they're allowed to get away with it because the media is right there with them. If we don't address this at the polls this time, we'll lose our country. GUEST: REP. Today on the show we have two filmmakers that shot a sci-fi feature film with a $600 camera, three lights, no budget, no stars, and a dream. Amazingly they were still able to get worldwide distribution. The film is called COSMOS and the filmmakers are brothers Elliot Weaver & Zander Weaver.COSMOS is a no-budget sci-fi feature film directed and self-produced by brothers Elliot Weaver & Zander Weaver, taking on all key crew roles throughout production, with the exception of writing the score. The film is a contemporary sci-fi mystery following three amateur astronomers who accidentally intercept what they believe is a signal from an alien civilization. Realizing they may have just stumbled across Mankind's greatest discovery, they must race to document their finding, prove its authenticity and share it with the world before it is lost forever. But the truth they uncover is even more incredible than any of them could have imagined.Inspired by Amblin-era adventure, set over one night and against the backdrop of a World-changing discovery, COSMOS offers spectacle and thrills but reminds us success is nothing without people to share it with. You can see the insanity that they went through to make this film. They started pre-production in 2013 and production in 2015. They shot it on my favorite camera the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 1080p, the same camera I shot my indie feature On the Corner of Ego and Desire with. Their soundstage was built in their garage where they would build up and break down the set every night. The film took 5 years to complete. The pure insanity of these filmmakers is awe-inspiring. The brothers and I discuss what it took to make COSMOS, the tech they used, how they keep the actors for years and so much more.Enjoy my inspiring conversation with Elliot and Zander Weaver. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement
In celebration of this milestone 200th episode, today I return to the origins of the podcast with a solo episode - all about my experience making our latest feature film (Disappearing Boy) with no crew. Throughout the episode, I break down the highly unconventional workflow that went into this production, which spanned the course of a year, 30+ locations, and multiple shooting blocks.I also unpack the creative benefits of taking time off in between shooting dates, my approach to writing and shooting in tandem, how to balance camera and sound while directing, and other critical lessons for likeminded filmmakers making features of their own.Sign up for my newsletter for exclusive filmmaking insight each Sunday. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5470278/advertisement
