When I hear Monsters and love in the same sentence, I am in there like swimwear. I love monsters. But I love that monsters are such a powerful storytelling tool to discuss the other, identity, and queerness. In the Tiny Onion and Dark Horse Pride anthology Monsters in Love, we see a cavalcade of some of the best creators in comics telling stories of love, loss, and so much more using every type of monster imaginable. This year, we were lucky enough to get together with 11 of the creatives who worked on the book to talk about it. We all talked about sandwiches first before diving into conversations about queerness, storytelling, bears, and so much more. We speak with: Jadzia Axelrod Vita Ayala Zoe Tunnell Aditya Bidikar Bradley Clayton Sina Grace Jacoby Salcedo Lee Knox Ostertag Ed Luce Josh Trujillo Vash Taylor About Monsters in Love We need love and monsters now more than ever!!! This super-sized special also includes a framing story by the creative team from The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos! It's an 80-page one-shot for less than 10 bucks! Dark Horse Comics is killing off its last physical stores -- the Things From Another World chain that literally funded the whole publisher back in '86 is getting the axe with the two Oregon spots in Milwaukie and Beaverton shutting June 30 and the flashy Universal CityWalk flagship following on September 30. Yeah after the e-comm site already went dark last year and founder Mike Richardson got booted as CEO they're "modernizing" by torching the brick-and-mortar roots that built the empire -- because nothing says "we love comics" like closing the actual shops while launching a games division and pretending this is progress. In this Remaster episode I talk to Dr. Alan Hugenot. We talk about his Near Death Experience and his book The Death Experience: What it is like when you die. His book describes what you will experience as you die. Giving details of the death process and your journey into the afterlife based on the author's own Near-Death experience where he died, went out-of-body into the afterlife, and returned to a second life in the same body. His experiences are collated with the Tibetan Book of the Dead; the Egyptian Book of the Dead; and current research on the Near Death-experience by the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS); Dr. Ian Stevensens's research on Children who Remember Past Lives at the University of Virginia; and studies of After-Death Communication at the University of Arizona. Giving the current science on consciousness survival while explaining quantum mathematics and the afterlife postulated to exist in dark energy located in alternative dimensions. Bio Dr. Hugenot began the study of mediumship more than a dozen years ago strictly as a scientist, intending to establish scientifically that this phenomenon was valid, and that communication with deceased surviving consciousness was indeed possible. Before giving his first reading he trained as a medium for 7 years within the Spiritualist tradition. This included completing the 4 year course with the Morris Pratt Institute, outside Milwaukie, Wisconsin, and also traveling to Lily Dale outside Buffalo, N.Y. to take week long seminars. Finally. he made three separate trips to England attending a total of five weeks of courses at Arthur Findlay College, of psychic science, outside Stansted, Essex, UK. So that today he is a member of the Licentiate Ministers & Certified Mediums Society of the NSAC. Currently, he regularly “demonstrates” Evidential Mediumship from the platform at Spiritualist services, and in circles (seances). President Trump’s use of federal immigration officers to arrest people alleged to be in the country without legal status has led to mass arrests, detentions and deportations. Some of those are U.S. citizens, and at least one such man in Milwaukie is suing the federal government over his unlawful detention. Alyssa Walker Keller is a coordinator for the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC). She says in years past, their statewide hotline, 888-622-1510, might receive about 50 calls in a typical month. In the last two weeks, she says, the number is more like 2,000. Walker Keller says the work of the organization is only possible with volunteers who give their time and expertise to support those targeted by ICE and their families. She joins us to tell us more about the growing demands on PIRC and the role it’s increasingly playing as heightened ICE activity continues.

JUST BEFORE SUNSET on the evening of April 12, 1946, Milwaukie residents James and Mary Rader were strolling with their friend H.C. Foster along the river by the Wisdom Island Moorage in Oak Grove when they saw a strange parcel swirling in an eddy under the dock. The parcel was about the size of a suitcase, wrapped in burlap and tied up with ropes and wires. It looked like it could be something important — or not. Foster thought not; he said it was probably “a bag of drowned cats” and best left alone, but he got a stick and hooked it and dragged it to the shore for curiosity's sake. It was carefully wrapped, that was for sure. And it was a solid object, about 30 inches long and 16 inches wide and less than a foot thick. The three of them untied it and started unwrapping the layers of burlap. They peeled off the burlap, then a grayish-black tweed topcoat, followed by a long pair of “union-suit” underwear, a dark blue sweater, and a pair of brown slacks. The slacks were the inmost layer. When those were removed, the three of them found themselves looking down at a naked female torso — headless, armless, legless. (Portland, Multnomah and Clackamas County; 1920s, 1930s, 1940s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2505a.torso-murder-anna-schrader-698.518.html)

Growing up here in Portland, I'm infused with the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship. I'm grateful to have grown up in this community where those values are front and center. Portland has a great history of urban planning, of really trying to do smart growth. I remember, as a kid, growing up, sorting out recycling, going out for hikes and camping. The reverence for nature and the planet is very, very deep. That's why I got into real estate development in the first place in college, recognizing the potential power of the industry to have a positive impact in this way.In today's world, sustainability is no longer optional—it's essential. Robert Pile, Founder of Oakleaf reDevelopment, has taken this challenge head-on with an innovative net-zero housing project in Portland. His 12-unit development in the St. John's neighborhood is a shining example of what's possible when environmental stewardship and urban planning align. At the heart of this project is the commitment to net zero energy use. As Robert explained, “The secret recipe is really in the proportions of the building… a super-tight envelope, high-efficiency HVAC systems, and rooftop solar panels.” These elements work together to ensure the building generates as much energy as it consumes.Such innovation doesn't come without challenges. With only a limited roof area for solar panels, the design had to be meticulously planned. Still, Robert remains optimistic, highlighting that their calculations are on target. “Our energy modeling… is right on the money in terms of the projected energy use and generation from the roof,” he said.Importantly, this project is about more than sustainability. It also addresses Portland's growing housing needs. Leveraging a zoning change from 2020, the development densifies the urban core while staying in harmony with environmental goals. By focusing on urban infill, Oakleaf reDevelopment is creating a model that could be replicated across the city to provide more housing while reducing the community's carbon footprint.Robert's vision extends beyond this project. “The opportunity we have is to leverage the outsized impact of the building industry… by pursuing more sustainable, energy-efficient, and net zero types of projects,” he noted. His passion for combining business with sustainability reflects a larger movement toward responsible development. If you're as inspired as I am, you can learn more about the project and even invest in it through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on Small Change. With this approach, Robert is not just building housing but also inviting the community to be a part of the solution. Visit s4g.biz/WL to explore the opportunity to make a difference and a profit.Robert's work is a testament to the power of innovative thinking and collaboration in addressing the climate crisis. It's proof that when we combine technology, passion, and community, we can build a better future—literally.tl;dr:* Robert Pile explains Oakleaf reDevelopment's innovative net zero housing project in Portland.* The project combines urban infill and sustainability, reducing energy use with efficient designs.* Robert highlights how zoning changes enabled this eco-friendly, scalable development model.* He shares his passion for sustainability and the formative experiences shaping his vision.* Robert advises engaging with nature and supporting sustainable businesses to amplify environmental impact. How to Develop Environmental Passion As a SuperpowerRobert Pile's superpower is his unwavering passion for sustainability. Growing up in Portland, he was immersed in values of environmental stewardship, which shaped his life and career. As he put it, “The built environment uses disproportionate amounts of energy… the opportunity to pursue more sustainable, energy-efficient, and net zero projects excites me the most.”One memorable story illustrates his connection to nature: Robert recalls growing up in Portland, where his family's activities often revolved around the outdoors. Whether hiking or recycling, these moments laid the foundation for his environmental ethic and his desire to make a difference through sustainable real estate development.Robert offers practical advice for developing this superpower:* Spend time in nature to foster a personal connection with the environment.* Support sustainability-focused businesses and initiatives.* Be mindful of consumption by choosing local products and services.* Leverage financial resources to contribute to environmental causes.By following Robert's example and advice, you can make environmental passion a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileRobert Pile (he/him):Founder, Oakleaf reDevelopmentAbout Oakleaf reDevelopment: Portland-based sustainability-centered multifamily housing provider.Website: www.oakleaf.devOther URL: smallchange.co/projects/West-LombardBiographical Information: Robert Pile grew up in Milwaukie, OR and attended La Salle High School before going to the University of San Diego, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Real Estate. The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Milwaukee County; https://www.wicounties.org/counties/milwaukee-county/ The Cabin is also presented by Group Health Trust: https://www.wcaght.org/   Campfire Conversation: Milwaukee uses its area code - 414 - to celebrate "414 Day" on April 14th. Across the city and county on that day, a variety of celebrations are held at a variety of bars, restaurants, museums... even the county park system and Summerfest get into it with pricing specials. In this episode, Ana, Eric, and Jake cover some historic notes about Milwaukee, beginning with its origins as a Native American settlement where wild rice grew and tribes gathered to trade as three rivers came together at Lake Michigan. Early incarnations of the city and county as named by European settlers included "Milwacky" and "Milwaukie" before the current spelling was settled upon - including through an interesting story involving one of the city's newspapers. The city was originally three warring settlements that realized they were chasing settlers away with their infighting and united as the City of Milwaukee in 1846. This port city began to grow steadily, drawing in a variety of newcomers who were especially influential initially from England and the eastern United States; immigration grew heavy in the late 19th century from Germany, Poland, Ireland, and Italy. The growth helped create a City Hall that was the Tallest Inhabited Building in the World when it opened; this is the time when Milwaukee emerged as a major center for beer brewing and industrial machinery, along with inventiveness. The typewriter and keyboard, the outboard motor, cordless grinders, the answering machine, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and a wide variety of tools and technology in both industry and medicine were created in today's 414, aka Milwaukee County. These led to many large industries that employed an often heavily unionized workforce well into the 20th century. But like other cities and industrial centers that flourished well past the post-World War II period, the 1960s and 1970s brought industrial decline as manufacturers began moving many operations either south within the country or to other countries. We discuss some of the economic and social issues that proved challenging in Milwaukee, as it did across the country, as the city began to grapple with more poverty and the issues around shifting to a more service-oriented economy. The city's sports history also comes into play, especially with baseball and basketball, and its penchant for celebration continues to be evident in many festivals, from ethnic heritage to one of the world's largest music festivals in Summerfest. Today, Milwaukee still grapples with issues but thrives in many ways, with a healthy downtown, numerous universities, and a variety of neighborhoods and districts offering wide options for living, working, and playing. The city's culinary scene is currently featured on Bravo's "Top Chef" along with the rest of Wisconsin, and the Republican National Convention will be hosted this summer. Milwaukee's history has a lot of fascinating twists and turns, join us for a "414 Day" look and salute on The Cabin!  Inside Sponsors:Washington County: https://www.visitwashingtoncounty.com/ReMax Realty: https://homes.discoverwisconsin.com/
