"Wish me a happy Valentine's Day when you call. That'd be... nice!" We watched "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with our friend Amber Shaw, and we need to wash the Blue Ruin hair dye out of our hands. Could this be the most romantic movie of all time? To a generation of millennials, the answer just might be yes. This loopy, Möbius strip, timey-wimey love story could only have been constructed by writer Charlie Kaufman and put to screen by visionary director Michel Gondry, and it has forever left a stamp on our impressionable minds. Jim Carrey gives a rare but memorable dramatic performance as the nebbish, lovelorn Joel Barish, and Kate Winslet delivers an Oscar-nominated performance as the prototype Manic Pixie Dream Girl, Clementine Kruczynski. Gondry's analog, sci-fi world brings us back to a pre-social media era in which one could plausibly have an entire relationship erased from their memory, and a mere postcard could seal the deal to your friends and family. Maybe smartphones would have been the death knell for Lacuna Inc., but we're glad to harken back to those naive days in the before times. There are theories about Joel and Clem's future relationship and whether or not they continued to have the erasure procedure done over and over again. Maybe meeting each other for the first time is their happy place. This movie just might be ours.  Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna Cover Art by Shaun Piela

Last month brought suitable mourning for Robert Duvall and Frederick Wiseman, whose legacies are so enshrined that the lengthy obituaries published by major outlets could have—likely were—written years ago. But immediately after came a quieter announcement that hit me hardest: Tom Noonan, the actor best-known for his collaborations with Michael Mann and Charlie Kaufman, and a filmmaker who made formally elegant and emotionally lacerating features based on his own plays. (As discussed in my 2021 interview with him.) While his passing may, to various film institutions, not seem so notable as Duvall or Wiseman, I noticed that the online reaction was essentially as instant and admiring. It's perhaps impossible to experience a Noonan performance, with that tall frame and mellifluous voice, and come away feeling like you'd seen any other actor. My friend, the critic Keith Uhlich, had known Noonan closely, working with him in both theater and cinema. I considered here and now the proper time to reminisce on Noonan's work, and a unique opportunity to Keith tell intimate stories of him as both an artist and friend. THIS IS THE 'SEVERED: ORIGINS' BREAKDOWN OF 'ETERNAL SUNSHINE' - PT05Welcome back for Part Five of this Ultimate breakdown of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." If you've come this far, there's not a lot I can say. It's time to delve into Joel's humiliations. This is the cringy stuff Charlie Kaufman really likes to write about. It might leave you feeling just a bit sick to your stomach...that's okay, it's the CK way.Mrs. Howard makes a visit! Mary starts to kiss Howard right in front of the big window that's all lit up all of a sudden in Joel's apartment. They start this at the exact same moment as Mrs. Mierzwiak comes rolling up in her Chevy Sedan. Hollis unloads on Howard plus she spills the beans about Mary. At least she causes Mary to ask some questions that Howard finds hard to answer. Deceiving Mary will prove to be a very bad idea. This ORIGINS entry is a trippy 2004 title from French Director Michel Gondry. Both Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller list it as an inspiration. It stars Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey. This is considered one of the best things Jim Carrey has ever done.Get ready for Part FIVE of this enormous movie breakdown.*******Huge thanks to Adam Scott, star of 'Severance' and host of the Severance Podcast for recording a custom intro for "Severed." This week, the boys grabbed some beers and kept it positive while they fired off some mini-reviews before featuring a conversation about “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. As part of the random year generator series, 2004 was a great year for movies, with over 50 $100m movies and many likable ones. While “Eternal Sunshine” didn't gross in the top 70, it may be the year's greatest film. This week, we're returning to a conversation with Charlie Kaufman, recorded in 2020. Kaufman is the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind some of the most inventive films of recent years, including “Adaptation”, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, and “Being John Malkovich”.  He's also directed films including “Synecdoche, New York”.  His work often explores human memory and consciousness, with a style frequently described as surreal.  At the time of this conversation in 2020, Kaufman had just published his debut novel “Antkind”.  On July 13, 2020, Charlie Kaufman discussed the book and his films with Andrew Sean Greer, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his comic novel “Less”.

There's that iconic Rachel McAdams kiss at the MTV Movie Awards, the acceleration of his “coolness” after the success of The Notebook all the way through the release of Drive, and that iconic, ever-changing voice of his. There's also those beautiful, weird Gosling eyes. There's also discussion about George Clooney as a filmmaker, his first film and Charlie Kaufman dislike of it, and his progression (regression?) as a director. What if the greatest stories of our lives are the ones we never meant to write? On today's episode, we welcome Steven Bernstein, a man whose journey through the world of cinema has been anything but predictable. A writer at heart, a cinematographer by accident, and a director by destiny, his career is a living testament to the art of surrendering to the unknown. From his early days at the BBC to the sets of Hollywood blockbusters, his story unfolds like an unplanned masterpiece—one that ultimately brought him full circle, back to the thing he always loved: writing. In this profound conversation, Steven Bernstein recounts his journey from philosophy student to award-winning cinematographer, where his love of storytelling found an unexpected home behind the lens. He speaks of the curious ways life moves us, sometimes against our best-laid plans. “You tend to go with those things that are providing you income,” he muses, reflecting on how a passion for writing gave way to cinematography, leading him to films like Monster, Like Water for Chocolate, and Scary Movie 2. Yet, even as he shaped light and shadow for some of cinema's most striking images, the writer within him never faded. There is an undeniable poetry in the way Bernstein describes his work. He doesn't just shoot a film; he composes it, layering meaning through framing, movement, and light. Every choice—a dolly push, a backlight, an asymmetrical composition—whispers something to the audience. It's a language beyond words, one that he speaks fluently. “Everything to do with film is a language,” he explains. “And like any language, it's made up of two parts: that which we present and that which we mean.”His journey back to writing was not an easy one. After years of crafting imagery for others, he took a leap into directing his own films, starting with Decoding Annie Parker. It was a lesson in risk and resilience. At one point, he spent five years in poverty, refusing to return to the safety of cinematography. “If you hold out for the dream, maybe you achieve it,” he says. It is a stark reminder that the artist's path is often one of sacrifice, but those who persist find themselves richer in ways beyond money.Yet, Bernstein also understands the tension between art and commerce. Filmmaking is an expensive endeavor, and investors want guarantees. He describes the struggle of balancing creative vision with financial expectations, a dance between inspiration and limitation. And yet, some of the greatest filmmakers—Terry Malick, the Coen Brothers, Charlie Kaufman—have defied convention, proving that the most resonant stories often break the rules. The conversation moves to the nature of collaboration, the unspoken alchemy that happens on a film set when everyone is in sync. He recalls moments from Monster, where the crew, sensing the gravity of a scene, chose to remain completely silent, whispering only when necessary. It was an unspoken agreement, an offering to the art being created. “It was one of the most magical moments I remember in any film I've ever worked on,” he recalls. It is a glimpse into the rare, sacred spaces where true storytelling happens—not in the scripts, but in the spaces between them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

When screenwriter Charlie Kaufman started making his epic, heartbreaking directorial debut SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK, he was the toast of Hollywood. Then it flopped, put a pause on his career, and arguably marked the end of the heady “indiewood” era of the oughties. Host Rico Gagliano talks to one of the film's stars, Daniel London (MINORITY REPORT), comedy star and SYNECDOCHE superfan Jamie Demetriou (FLEABAG), and LA Times critic Amy Nicholson to learn about a movie that's now seen as one of the best of the century. The latest season of The MUBI Podcast – BOX OFFICE POISON — dives into six visionary films... that were also notorious flops. Inspired by the new book of the same name by Tim Robey, film critic for The Telegraph, every episode is a wild ride through a great movie's rise, and fall, and rise.DAHOMEY will stream exclusively on MUBI in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, Turkey, India and Latin America from December 13.To stream some of the films we've covered on the podcast, check out the collection Featured on the MUBI Podcast.
