On the latest episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo steps into a high-concept, near-future world of moral quandaries and psychological pressure with the sci-fi drama "The Assessment." Directed by Fleur Fortuné and starring Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander, and Himesh Patel, the film follows a couple evaluated by the government over seven increasingly intense days to determine whether they're worthy of having a child. Think of a creepy, contained "Children of Men" by way of Ingmar Bergman and Charlie Kaufman. The film recently premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and hits VOD on April 8th, delivering a minimalist but emotionally potent take on societal control, intimacy, and parenthood. To talk through it all, we sat down with both stars to dig into the emotional challenges of the project, their collaborations with Fortuné, and what kind of psychological strength it takes to survive the film's titular assessment.

In this Diana Wynyard Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode, we look at probably her best-known film, Gaslight (directed by Thorold Dickinson), and consider its pros and cons relative to the Cukor/Selznick Hollywood version of a few years later, as well as the question of how "gaslighting" became an internet meme and how well the source fits the popular meaning. Then we turn to an oddball film with an anti-nationalism message, Freedom Radio (Anthony Asquith), set in Nazi Germany but with a broader application, and consider how Wynyard's screen persona informs her tricky role. Then, in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we battle it out over Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (cluttered or perfect screenplay by Charlie Kaufman?) and find accord on John Cassavetes' revealing potboiler, Gloria (love story between a tiny man and a deadly goddess).  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:    GASLIGHT (1940) [dir. What if the greatest stories of our lives are the ones we never meant to write? On today's episode, we welcome Steven Bernstein, a man whose journey through the world of cinema has been anything but predictable. A writer at heart, a cinematographer by accident, and a director by destiny, his career is a living testament to the art of surrendering to the unknown. From his early days at the BBC to the sets of Hollywood blockbusters, his story unfolds like an unplanned masterpiece—one that ultimately brought him full circle, back to the thing he always loved: writing. In this profound conversation, Steven Bernstein recounts his journey from philosophy student to award-winning cinematographer, where his love of storytelling found an unexpected home behind the lens. He speaks of the curious ways life moves us, sometimes against our best-laid plans. “You tend to go with those things that are providing you income,” he muses, reflecting on how a passion for writing gave way to cinematography, leading him to films like Monster, Like Water for Chocolate, and Scary Movie 2. Yet, even as he shaped light and shadow for some of cinema's most striking images, the writer within him never faded. There is an undeniable poetry in the way Bernstein describes his work. He doesn't just shoot a film; he composes it, layering meaning through framing, movement, and light. Every choice—a dolly push, a backlight, an asymmetrical composition—whispers something to the audience. It's a language beyond words, one that he speaks fluently. “Everything to do with film is a language,” he explains. “And like any language, it's made up of two parts: that which we present and that which we mean.”His journey back to writing was not an easy one. After years of crafting imagery for others, he took a leap into directing his own films, starting with Decoding Annie Parker. It was a lesson in risk and resilience. At one point, he spent five years in poverty, refusing to return to the safety of cinematography. “If you hold out for the dream, maybe you achieve it,” he says. It is a stark reminder that the artist's path is often one of sacrifice, but those who persist find themselves richer in ways beyond money.Yet, Bernstein also understands the tension between art and commerce. Filmmaking is an expensive endeavor, and investors want guarantees. He describes the struggle of balancing creative vision with financial expectations, a dance between inspiration and limitation. And yet, some of the greatest filmmakers—Terry Malick, the Coen Brothers, Charlie Kaufman—have defied convention, proving that the most resonant stories often break the rules. The conversation moves to the nature of collaboration, the unspoken alchemy that happens on a film set when everyone is in sync. He recalls moments from Monster, where the crew, sensing the gravity of a scene, chose to remain completely silent, whispering only when necessary. It was an unspoken agreement, an offering to the art being created. “It was one of the most magical moments I remember in any film I've ever worked on,” he recalls. It is a glimpse into the rare, sacred spaces where true storytelling happens—not in the scripts, but in the spaces between them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Charlie Kaufman's screenwriting and Spike Jonze's directorial debuts, Being John Malkovich is a delightfully weird story of identity. Lotte (Cameron Diaz)'s storyline is particularly compelling, with Lotte experiencing gender euphoria as Malkovich, whereas our other main characters want to use Malkovich for patriarchal power, through fame or immortality. Unfortunately less compelling is the slathering of artifice on the disc's additional features including an essay/interview by what appears to be a character from a Jonathan Lethem novel, a retrospective for a future neural implant release of the film, and scene commentary from someone completely uninvolved with the production.

When this film was released in 2008 it flopped, but at the same time Roger Ebert called it the best film of the decade, and maybe one of the best films ever made. Now, Six and Bill dive into an in-depth discussion of Charlie Kaufman's "Synecdoche, New York." They analyze the movie's complex themes of mortality, identity, creative obsession, and the passage of time. Six and Bill explore the film's surreal elements, dark humor, and emotional impact, drawing connections to works like Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" and other Kaufman films. The conversation touches on the movie's challenging nature, its divisive reception, and the brilliant performances, particularly by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Six and Bill debate whether it's a masterpiece or overly pretentious, ultimately concluding that while it's a difficult watch, it's likely a great work of art that rewards multiple viewings. They also discuss the film's music, including the haunting end credits song, and how the movie resonates differently with viewers depending on their life experiences. The episode concludes with Six and Bill reflecting on the film's deeper messages about living life fully and prioritizing meaningful relationships. Their thoughtful analysis is interspersed with personal anecdotes and funny asides, providing an engaging exploration of a challenging and thought-provoking film. We kick off this episode with some riffing on Hallmark movies and a suspension of Jason's voting rights. No worries, though! The two poems under discussion are by a former student of Jason's and it comes clear pretty quickly that we're all fans. Don't listen to this episode for the suspense, but for the delicious delve into narrative possibility and how poetry is wonderfully suited to keeping the door open long after a poem ends. Indented lineation and how it can affect a poem's pacing gets some attention, as does the sensory tease of wonderfully selected symbolism and imagery. We also touch on the implication of the reader in a poem where the speaker is still working things out. In this film-tinged discussion, Kathy reminds us that a sweet ending can hit the spot, Sam confesses to thinking a lot about “Baby Boom”, Dagne owns up to seeing Raiders of the Lost Art eleven times when it was first released, Jason pays homage to Diane Keaton and Liza Minelli, and Isabel poses a question that underscores our theme of narrative possibility.   Some links we think you'll like: Whisky & Rum in Raiders of the Lost Ark, ThirstMag.com How Baby Boom Set the Template for Future Movies About Working Mothers, Vulture   At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Jason Schneiderman, Samantha Neugebauer, Isabel Petry, Dagne Forrest     Georgia M. She lives south of Boston, near the ocean, with her partner and their daughter.   The Tavern   After I cracked the 6-ball off the table, he offered to teach me to drive stick in the parking lot.   Before: whiskey in no-one's-joking-sized shot glasses, the kind   the cool girl in Indiana Jones throws back then stacks like a champ while men fall off their stools   around her. Heavy glasses. No windows. Just the door to the lot, to the harbor   eventually, where earlier that day I'd seen a girl my age with a pocketknife, cleaning a fish.   She'd plucked the eyes out, let them sit on the ground staring up   like a figment in Charlie Kaufman's dreams. Every story is a version of something else.   I followed him to his car. I didn't. I laughed and touched his arm. I balled my hands into fists. My body   felt something was wrong. I felt nothing. It always turns out alright in the end. It never does.   I'm the girl who climbed into the truck and the one who got home safe. I taught myself   how to drive stick and how to run the table. I'm the girl in the harbor. All eyes.   At the Raw Bar, Housing Three Dozen Oysters for our Eighth Anniversary   We're not in it for the sex, if that's what you're thinking. And besides, I'm not the kind of person who shucks and tells. That was a joke. But it's exactly what I'm talking about. I'm the kind who makes jokes when something matters too much.   We're not in it for the sex. It's more about what happens after the shell unlatches: brine, salt, alive, pulling us in by the shirt, shaking us and putting us down as if tentacles had launched out from under the ice.   That wasn't a metaphor for our relationship. I'm honest to God talking about oysters: the knock-back, the vinegar zip, extra lemon on the side. A feeling like our bodies could turn back into fish. A speedboat revving from zero to sixty, that's how it felt to throw down my first Mookie Blue after nine pregnant months. Forget forks or sauce or napkins. If every drop of oyster liquor doesn't make it to your mouth, you shouldn't even be here, and by here, I mean sitting across the bar, gaping at us, saying, wow, that's a lot of oysters, or standing on the shores of an oyster farm, complaining that the wind's too cold.   Am I getting any closer to explaining myself? When we first met, he traced his finger along the coves of Maine's coast, a chart of waterways and kayak routes, I swear, the only freshman with a map of water pinned to his dorm room wall, and that was fourteen years ago, but in that moment, I loved him. We toast with a click of our shells— he lifts one to his lips.
