Jon Scott worked as a record promotion guy with a lot of great artists, but his most important, and meaningful, relationship was with Tom Petty. (In fact, Jon can be credited for breaking Petty, long after the record company gave up on him.) In his new book, Tom Petty and Me, Scott recounts a life-long friendship with one of the great American songwriters of all time.To get a copy of Jon's book, visit his website.
Seth and Marc talk about the Americana coming-of-age ditty Jack & Diane by John Cougar. Switching between horny verses and existentialist choruses, this song paints a Midwest hell where people suck on hot dogs with chili on them and fuck under trees and opt for some strange words and turns of phrase that you'd maybe be familiar with if you grew up in Bumfuck, Indiana like "dribble off those Bobbie Brooks slacks" and "ditty."

This is a strange one. Weird Al reportedly wrote this song as a parody of Jack & Diane but John Melloncamp declined. Instead of completely scrapping the song he redid it as a Blue song instead. It's clear that the lyrics mostly remained unchanged when he switched to the new style. The Matt's discuss this particularly mean-spirited song that did not age well over the last 40 years and also discuss our feelings on Blues music and John Cougar Melloncamp!
