In his Confessions, Augustine dedicates the book's final section to reflecting on time. How do Christians live within time yet still live towards eternity, the telos of all time, the appointed time? Many Christians live in the past, bound by their memories, regrets and accomplishments, while others live in a state of anticipation, living in the future. But the past is past, never to return, and the future never exists in itself. We can get lost in the memory of—or anticipation of—non-existence. Rather than getting lost in time, Augustine explains how all time can be brought to immediate awareness in three different aspects. He writes: “The present considering the past is the memory, the present considering the present is immediate awareness, the present considering the future is expectation.” The only proper place for human attention is the present moment which ever presents itself. But this awareness must be “merged into” or brought before God Himself. The means that there is a need for humans to bring our existence in time to the eternal presence of God. We worship our way towards eternity. Our lives aim not to amass a hoard of things but to encounter God through sacred moments. Therefore, how we face time matters immensely. Christians sanctify or redeem time by bringing God's eternal reality into their present moment. The Church trains her sons and daughters to do this through the Sacraments in which God's own life is offered by grace. Through the sacraments the Church enters eternity, and most specially, the Holy Eucharist brings the faithful into the eternal moment of worship through the once for all sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Christians also encounter God through sacred moments as they follow the Church's calendar by dedicating the seasons and weeks to the life of Christ and his saints. Living according to the calendar of the Church helps Christians realize that eternity is not some future reality after death but the ever present and commanding reality in which time unfolds. These events marked history as such to influence the naming of two epochs, B.C. and A.D. – Before Christ and In the year of our Lord. How shall we engage with time? Redeeming time (KJV): Ephesians 5:15-20 Sanctifying time: Genesis 2:1-3 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. OK, God didn't rest because He was tired! Shabat is mainly used as “to cease, to stop.” All done! Instead of God doing more, He ceased from doing. And that's the idea of the 7th day … a pattern for us to cease from doing and “be” still (cease from striving) and know (wonder, contemplate, imagine, exalt) … that I am God. So God sanctified time sort of like we sanctify food … we approach food sometimes like it's something to be crammed and flushed out our bodies! Sanctifying creation: I Timothy 4:4-5 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. We make created things holy by the word of God and prayer. Holy time, Holy water, holy oil, holy communion, holy food, and so forth! Holy? To set apart with thanksgiving to the one who created it and gifted it to us! This is a call to live in a sacramental universe. To be a royal priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices until the Lord returns.

This episode is the WORLD PREMIERE of “Lou's Blues”, my new single. As I've mentioned several times on the podcast, I came of age musically during the British Invasion era of the 1960s, and then I segued into the Jazz Fusion era of the 1970s. That era was dominated by incredible bands like Weather Report, Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. My band, Sagov, was a part of that scene. What I loved about jazz fusion era was how it combined the power of rock with the sophistication and improvisation of jazz. “Lou's Blues” is inspired by that era. I call it a tone poem. It's a musical journey. I wrote it in the recording studio and we did it in one take.Mark Egan, acclaimed bassist with the Pat Metheny Group, Elements and Gil Evans, calls the track “Fantastic! Great playing and production!” Peter Erskine, Superstar drummer with Weather Report, says “Digging It!”The track features my band, Project Grand Slam, consisting of Tristan Clark on guitar, Baden Goyo on keyboards, Joel E. Mateo on drums, Guillermo Barron on percussion, and me on bass. The producer is Tony Carey, singer-songwriter and keyboard genius.“Lou's Blues” is available for streaming on all the streaming platforms. This Music Day Episode features three of Robert's “Wordless Vocal” songs. These are hybrid songs with melodies but without lyrics. This style of song can sometimes capture the meaning and mood of a song better than if there were lyrics. See for yourself. When listening to “March Of The Diplomats” close your eyes and imagine a group of Diplomats like from the United Nations walking in unison like penguins. It's Robert's musical image of today's world diplomacy. “Cousins” is a simple, playful, children's song with a repeating melody that embellishes each time around. Robert wrote the song for his grandchildren. It's one of his most streamed songs. And “African Nights (For Chick)” is Robert's homage to keyboard genius Chick Corea, one of his all-time favorite musicians, written with a touch of Return To Forever in mind. “March Of The Diplomats”. Way back in the mid-1970s, Billy Cobham released an album that altered the course of my life, The Album Crosswinds and the track Heather just took my musical mind in a different direction, I started to go to Jazz clubs to hear and see this music that set my mind on fire. Through Billy's music, I was introduced to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, John McLaughlin, Al DE Meola, Chick Corea, Return To Forever, Weather Report and so much more, the floodgates to my musical mind were opened. Fast forward many years, I jumped for joy when I had the opportunity to Promote Billy Cobham, the second time I promoted Billy we became on speaking terms After the afternoon sound check we entered into a discussion about the dynamics of changing a band's lineup by adding or subtracting one or two members – then I told Billy that one of my favourite all-time tunes was a track called Heather from the album Crosswinds. I thanked Billy for having a big influence on me in 1977. I then asked if I could interview him, Billy said ''no problem but it must be over a meal''. So as we had a chat over a takeaway curry and a beer in my office I record my first-ever interview with one of my favourite musicians talking about one of my favourite pieces of music of all time with an outstanding and very special sax solo from Michael Brecker, and to this day, to say I was in Heaven is an understatement. In this mix, I would like to share with you 3 special pieces of music that significantly helped to change my musical direction. I have said two things all season long. The first is that we're going to be exploring a single topic for ten episodes, and that topic is fusion. But the second thing I've been saying is that what I'm talking about when I say the word fusion isn't a style or a genre, but a state of mind. It's not what you play, it's how you approach music-making.In previous episodes, we've talked about what people typically think of as fusion, which drummer Lenny White, who appeared in episode two of this series, prefers to call jazz-rock. That's the version that more or less starts with Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and Tony Williams' Lifetime and branches out to include Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever and Weather Report. But my version of that continuum also includes early Seventies Santana, it includes the Fania All Stars collaborating with Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham, it includes adventurous funk and R&B fusion, like P-Funk and Earth, Wind & Fire and the Ohio Players and Slave, and it includes jazz-funk acts like Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard and George Duke.Vernon Reid is a guitarist who was born in England but grew up in New York. He's best known as the leader of Living Colour, and one of the co-founders of the Black Rock Coalition along with the late writer Greg Tate, but he's got a long and varied discography that encompasses solo material, duo and trio work with other guitarists like Bill Frisell, David Torn and Elliot Sharp, and guest appearances with a ton of groups from Public Enemy to the Rollins Band, Mick Jagger, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Santana, and many, many more. His solo album Mistaken Identity from 1996 is the only album to carry co-producer credits from Prince Paul and Teo Macero. Back in 2012, he made an album with a group called Spectrum Road which featured John Medeski on keyboards, Jack Bruce on bass, and Cindy Blackman Santana on drums — it was conceptually a tribute to Tony Williams Lifetime, but it's very much its own thing as well, so definitely check that out.Reid got his start, though, with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's band the Decoding Society. He played guitar, banjo, and guitar synth with that group, which had two bassists: Melvin Gibbs, who was on this podcast a couple of years ago, and Reverend Bruce Johnson, and then some horn players, mostly Zane Massey on saxophones and Henry Scott on trumpet. It's high-energy music that's also really melodic in a kind of post-Prime Time way — jazz, funk, rock, Texas blues and West African music all swirled together and thrown straight at your face at a hundred miles an hour. Their albums Nasty, Street Priest, Mandance, Barbeque Dog, Montreux Jazz Festival and Earned Dreams are all incredible. They're all out of print right now, too, but some of them are on streaming services, so dig up whatever you can. Reid has a new record out with the group Free Form Funky Freqs, a trio with bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who's also been on this podcast before, and drummer Calvin Weston, and as he explains in this conversation, it's full-on improv, starting from zero every time they play together, and because it's so limited – no rehearsals, no soundchecks with all three members – they know exactly how many times they've played together. The album represents their 73rd encounter. It's called Hymn Of The 3rd Galaxy, sort of a tribute to Return To Forever there, who had an album called Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy, and you'll hear a little bit of the music late in the podcast. I think you'll really enjoy this episode. I've been a fan of Vernon Reid's music for about 35 years. The first Living Colour album came out when I was in high school, and I saw them play on the first Lollapalooza festival in the summer of 1991. And I interviewed him once before, about 10 years ago, when he was doing a multimedia presentation called Artificial Africa. So in this conversation, we talk about his work with the Decoding Society, about the Free Form Funky Freqs, about the whole wave of guitarists who came up at the same time he did, including Michael Gregory Jackson and Kelvyn Bell and Jean-Paul Bourelly and Brandon Ross, as well as older players like James "Blood" Ulmer and Pete Cosey and Sonny Sharrock… we talk about a lot of things, and I'm just gonna end this introduction here, so you can dive in.MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE:Living Colour, “WTFF” (from Stain)Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society, “Iola” (from Mandance)Vernon Reid & Bill Frisell, “Size 10 1/2 Sneaks” (from Smash & Scatteration)Free Form Funky Freqs, “Outer Arm” (from Hymn of the 3rd Galaxy)

In previous episodes, we've talked about what people commonly understand as fusion, which drummer Lenny White, who appeared in episode two of this series, prefers to call jazz-rock. That's the version that starts with Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and Tony Williams' Lifetime and quickly branches out with Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever and Weather Report and on and on. But as we've continued the discussion, we've expanded the scope of inquiry to include adventurous funk and R&B fusion, which includes everything from P-Funk and Earth, Wind & Fire and the Ohio Players — and wow, do the Ohio Players deserve a place in the fusion conversation that they are very rarely granted — to Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard and especially George Duke.Adam Rudolph is a fusion artist in about as broad a sense as you can imagine. He's been a percussionist for close to 50 years, and should be much better known than he is. He's been around since the early '70s and has worked with everyone: Yusef Lateef, Fred Anderson, Don Cherry, Roscoe Mitchell, Pharoah Sanders, Sam Rivers, Wadada Leo Smith, Herbie Hancock, Maulawi, Foday Musa Suso, Hassan Hakmoun, Jon Hassell… he's part of the Bill Laswell company of players, too, so he's on a zillion records through that connection. Plus he leads two main groups of his own, Moving Pictures and the Go! Organic Orchestra, which have made many, many albums and even crossed over with each other a time or two.Adam and I had a really fascinating conversation over the course of two phone calls. The impetus was Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef, a collaboration between him and reeds player Bennie Maupin that's just been released. Bennie Maupin of course is a legend on his own — he played on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and On The Corner, he was a member of Marion Brown's group in the 1960s, he was in Mwandishi and the Headhunters with Herbie Hancock, he played with Woody Shaw, and his own album from 1974, The Jewel In The Lotus, is an absolutely brilliant record that blends spiritual jazz with almost New Age ambient music. There's really no other album like it; if you've never heard it, it's a must-hear. So obviously Rudolph and I talk about Maupin, whom he's worked with off and on for decades, but we also talk about Laswell and about Lateef and about the whole idea of world music and fusion-as-creative-mindset that I've been discussing with every artist I've interviewed for the podcast this year. We talk a lot about the philosophy that goes into bringing together musicians from all sorts of traditions, from all over the globe, and finding ways to make their ideas flow together. That's what he does with Go! Organic Orchestra, the membership of which is completely open and the music of which is created through spontaneous conduction. So he was really the ideal person to talk about all this stuff with. I think you'll come away from this episode with a lot to think about. I know I did. And I hope you enjoy listening to it. All the music you'll hear, by the way, comes from Symphonic Tone Poem For Brother Yusef.

In this episode we'll be reviewing the 1984 album by Whitesnake - “Slide It In”. Followed by “Make Me A Mix” where we create a mix of our favorite Scorpions songs from their albums Unbreakable (2004), Humanity Hour 1 (2007), Sting In The Tail (2010) and Return To Forever (2015). Then we conclude the episode with, “RE-WRITE Rock”. This is a tongue-in-cheek show where we re-write certain lyrics to be more appropriate for the sensitivities of people's ears nowadays. We definitely loved our journey through the 1980's! To all you headbangers out there, enjoy the episode and always keep it metal. m/
Drummer/composer/producer Lenny White is a Founding Father of Jazz-Rock music. His work with Miles on "Bitches Brew" is legendary, Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" is iconic, and Return To Forever's "Romantic Warrior" is a pinnacle intersection between jazz and prog. What a joy and a complete honor to pick Lenny's brain about his early discoveries, his solo albums, our favorite sci-fi movies, and the concepts that animate his unique musical world.
After a long break, Jake returns for more music with new equipment, but also unfortunately with sad news.Music recommendations are “Red Clay” by Freddie Hubbard, and “Antipop Vs Matthew Shipp” by Antipop Consortium.Wake & Jake (Bonus Content)https://www.patreon.com/wakeandjakepodWake & Jakehttps://www.auxchicago.com/wake-jakehttps://www.instagram.com/wakeandjakepod/https://twitter.com/WakeandJakePodJake Fisherhttps://www.instagram.com/kennyg.g.allin/https://deathbotrecords.bandcamp.com/Music Composed by Jake FisherLogo by Baitul Javid
We hope you will consider showing your support through our Patreon page. This helps to keep the episodes coming. Thank you so much! https://www.patreon.com/theplayerswebcast It was so much fun to talk with Tom Brechtlein. He has been one of my favorite musicians / drummers since I first saw him with Chick Corea in 1980. In this conversation, Tom shares about a multitude of topics including his time with Chick Corea (and how he met Chick), Wayne Shorter, Kenny Loggins, and others. Be sure to visit Tom's website at: https://www.tombrechtlein.com Tom Brechtlein grew up in East Meadow, Long Island and gravitated to drums after listening to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In junior high, his attention turned to big band jazz, and he became attracted to the music of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. His investigation of jazz led him to Dave Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello and then to modern giants like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams as well as legends like Papa Jo Jones, Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones. "When I was 18," he recalls, "I saw Chick Corea's Return To Forever on PBS Television; and I remember sitting there thinking, ' I'm going to play with that guy someday.'" Two years later, in 1978, he auditioned with Corea and got the gig. He remained in the band till 1983, at which point he joined Wayne Shorter's band. There followed extensive road work with guitarist Al Di Meola and violinist Jean Luc Ponty before Tom finally hooked up with Robben Ford in 1986.
Gordon Bahary has had a marvelous musical journey teaming with music legends Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis and many others. His keyboard and synthesizer work transcends several music genres including R&B, Jazz and World Music. Multi-award winning program director Ray White talks with Gordon, in November of 2012, about his musical mentors, his current album Unbreakable and his early years in Twilight 22 - landing a Top 10 song on Billboards' R&B chart. In our showcase segment, Lisa Davis looks back at the phenomenal career of 25-time Grammy award winner, Chick Corea, who passed away on February 9, 2021. A pioneer in jazz music, Chick led several groundbreaking bands including Return To Forever and Chick Corea Elektric Band and has played with dozens of the giants in the jazz world. In this episode we welcome the great blues & country writer Tony Russell, who talks about his new Rural Rhythm: The Story of Old-Time Country Music in 78 Records — and the joys of the original Americana sound from the '20s to the '40s. Tony also talks us through his writing career from the late '60s to the present, with a particular nod to a 1972 Cream piece about B.B. King. The focus on the "Old-Time" country of Fiddlin' John Carson & Uncle Dave Macon carries through to discussion of those compelling revivalists Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, big faves of the RBP crew — and then to clips we hear from a 1983 audio interview with Phil Everly of peerless country-pop harmonists the Everly Brothers. Phil talks about the strained relationship with brother Don and the prospect of the Everlys reunion that happened in the fall of that year. For those less smitten by Appalachia and "high lonesome" close-harmony singing, there are heartfelt farewells to roots reggae icon Bunny Wailer & trad-jazzer turned "Father of British R&B" Chris Barber, both of whom were lost to the music world last week. There's effusive appreciation of the Wailers co-founder's classic 1976 solo debut Blackheart Man, while RBP's co-founder Martin Colyer pitches in with reminiscences of his uncle Ken's bandmate Barber.Mark talks us through his highlights from recent additions to the RBP Library, including the great Derek Taylor holding forth on the Stones' drug bust in 1967 and the recently-departed Chick Corea discussing his Return To Forever group with Zoo World's John Swenson in 1974. Barney namechecks a Kandia Crazy Horse hymn to the L.A. Hvordan endte Mickey (Motörhead) opp i Scorpions? JEAN-LUC PONTY is truly one of my musical heroes. That becomes fully apparent during this extensive and candid interview. My appropriate level of ebullience is easily eclipsed by Mr Ponty's eloquence and generous recall, as he shares candid stories about Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return To Forever, his classical music influences and so much more. My eternal gratitude to JLP for sharing so openly about his incredible life in music. Episode 01 of The ProgCast has arrived.
