Send us a textRock Legend: A Conversation With Drumming Icon Carmine Appice#vanillafudge #rocklegends #rockdrummer #carmineappice #classicrock #rodstewart #jeffbeck #cactus #bluemurder #kingcobra As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. The Fudge had no precedent. The band was totally unique. No rock group, up until that point, had ever so lugubriously s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out well-known pop tunes like the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby” and “Ticket To Ride,” Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready,” Sonny & Cher‘s “Bang Bang” Rod Argent‘s “She‘s Not There” and, most famously, The Supremes‘ Motown classic “You Keep Me Hangin‘ On” to such hippie heights. With Mark Stein‘s mysterioso wash of Grand Guignol keyboard theatrics, Tim Bogert‘s amazing and trippy bass runs, and guitarist Vince Martell‘s era-happy soloing, Appice boomed like no other drummer in rock history. Their debut album still stands today as a Hard Rock classic. Vanilla Fudge went on to tour with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and even had Led Zeppelin as an opening act.Post-Fudge, Bogert and Appice formed Cactus (seen as an influence on King‘s X and Van Halen). Post-Cactus, the rhythm section found Grammy-winning Guitar Hero Jeff Beck to form the first supergroup: Beck, Bogert & Appice (BBA).One of the premier showmen in rock, Appice became known worldwide for his astonishing live performances, in addition to becoming a highly sought-after session drummer, recording with countless artists throughout his career. Send us a textChris Slade's music career reads like a Who's Who list of rock ‘n' roll. It's truly amazing how many iconic bands and artists he has performed with over the decades. His musical journey can be traced back to 1963. Chris came from the same village in Wales as fellow Welshman Tom Jones and, as a 17-year-old lad, was hired by Jones to play drums in the singer's backing band, The Squires, for seven years. It was the beginning of an incredible career that is still going strong today. He was the founding member of Mandred Man, and his illustrious resume includes working with Asia, AC/DC, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, and many others. In 2012, Slade launched the band, The Chris Slade Timeline, to mark, at that time, 50 years as a professional rock drummer. The band performs music from all aspects of his lengthy career and has appeared at major festivals including Hellfest, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Harley Davidson Aquitaine, and Saint Tropez and is the only rock band to play the Moscow Olympic Stadium for the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament. The current lineup of The Chris Slade Timeline features Paul “Bun” Davis on lead vocals, bassist Stevie Gee, guitarist James Cornford, Mike Clarke on keys and guitar and, of course the inimitable Mr. Slade on drums. This core lineup recorded Timescape and continues to tour.https://chrisslade.com https://www.facebook.com/ChrisSladeACDC Visit the Self-Care Institute at https://www.selfcareinstitute.com/ Support the showVisit www.creativepeacemeal.com to leave a review, fan voicemail, and more!Insta @creative_peacemeal_podcastFB @creativepeacemealpodBonfire https://www.bonfire.com/store/creative-peacemeal/Redbubble CPPodcast.redbubble.comCreative Peacemeal READING list here Donate to AhHa!Broadway here! Drummer Carmine Appice (who is also a founding member of Vanilla Fudge and who has performed and/or recorded with Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Ozzy, and Pink Floyd, amongst others), Cactus is as heavy, bluesy, and uncompromising in its musical assault as they were 50-plus years ago.The band released its new album, Temple of Blues – Influences & Friends, June 7 on Cleopatra Records. The album merges the current members of Cactus with a big-name, star laden, ensemble of guest artists, all of whom have called the group among their biggest influences. Featured along with the current Cactus band is a who's who of blues and rock icons: Guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent, Pat Travers, Warren Hayes, Vernon Reid, Steve Stevens, Johnny A (The Yardbirds), Ty Tabor (King's X) and bassists Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King's X) Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), Kenny Aaronson (ex- Joan Jet and The Yardbirds), as well as members of Government Mule, Vixen, Rainbow, Zebra, and Whitesnake. Vocalist Dee Snider of Twisted Sister appears on the band's remake of the Howlin' Wolf classic “Evil,” and Appice's bandmate in Vanilla Fudge Mark Stein turns in a powerful vocal on Little Richard's “Long Tall Sally.” A second version of “Guiltless Glider,” appears as a bonus track with former Judas Priest vocalist, Ripper Owens. In addition to Appice on drums and vocals on all tracks, original Cactus guitarist Jim McCarty also appears on Temple of Blues. The new album contains reimagined versions of some of Cactus's most legendary songs with the current band and guests putting a new spin on these bad-ass tunes that are among the heaviest of heavy blues-rock ever recorded. “The music of Cactus has always been steeped in the blues tradition,” says Appice, who wanted the group to re-visit its best songs within a modern rock approach to traditional blues. “We kept hearing from so many of our music celebrity friends how much Cactus influenced them and how they would love to be a guest on a Cactus album. Any band named Cactus has got to be raw and heavy. And that's just what these boys have been and are since the band's formation in 1970. Referred to when they first formed as the “American Led Zeppelin,” the band's reputation as supreme masters of relentless hard rock still precedes them and is well deserved. Cactus was formed in 1970 from the ashes of Vanilla Fudge when Appice and former Vanilla Fudge bassist Tim Bogert's plans to form a band with Jeff Beck were canceled when Beck had a nasty automobile accident that sidelined him for a lengthy period-of-time. The original lineup featured Appice, Bogert, former Mitch Ryder guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. This lineup released three classic albums - Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971) – all of which charted in the Billboard Top 200 and that still hold up well today. Carmine's playing has also been a huge influence on drummers including Joey Kramer (Aerosmith), Neal Peart (Rush), Phil Collins (Genesis), Brian Taylor (Queen), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and countless others. He was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2014. His best-selling drum instruction book The Realistic Rock Drum Method was first published in 1972 and has since been revised and republished as The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method. Carmine also published his best-selling memoir, Stick It!: My Life of Sex, Drums & Rock 'n' Roll, in 2016. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jim Gordon played the drums on Wichita Lineman, Good Vibrations, the Byrds' Mr Tambourine Man and hundreds of other recordings we all own and worked with pretty much everyone including Steely Dan, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Randy Newman, John Lennon, Frank Zappa and the Everlys. He toured with Delaney & Bonnie and Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs And Englishmen package and was a member of Derek & the Dominos. He played with a “bounce, a lilt, a boiling undercurrent” that added a whole new melodic dimension and he saw two different worlds from the inside, the studio-based pop factories of the ‘60s singles boom and the big ‘70s tours of the heyday of the rock album. West Coast author and music columnist Joel Selvin considers his supreme talent and ultimately catastrophic story in his new book ‘Drums & Demons: the Tragic Journey of Jim Gordon' alighting here at various points in detail, among them … … the intersection between “rock and roll and true crime”. … the secret of “a compositional drummer”. … how he started at the top, aged 17, touring with the Everlys and the Rolling Stones. … how Rita Coolidge was robbed of her royalties, twice. … his appetite for fame and recognition at a time when “being a rock star was the most elevated position in the world”. … why he turned down a Dylan tour. … the long, tangled evolution of ‘Layla' and what Jim added to You're So Vain that transformed it. … and why he was sentenced to 16 years (for the murder of his mother) and ended up doing 38. Canned Heat emerged in 1966 and was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite. Hite took the name “Canned Heat” from a 1928 recording by Tommy Johnson. They were joined by Henry “The Sunflower” Vestine, another ardent record collector who was a former member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Rounding out the band in 1967 were Larry “The Mole” Taylor on bass, an experienced session musician who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis and The Monkees and Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra on drums who had played in two of the biggest Latin American bands of the day. The band attained three worldwide hits, “On The Road Again”, “Let's Work Together” in 1970 and “Going Up The Country” in 1969: all of which became rock anthems. They secured their niche in the pages of rock ‘n roll history with their performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (along with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who) and the headlining slot at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. The band collaborated with John Mayall and Little Richard and later with blues icon, John Lee Hooker. In September 1970, the band was shattered by the suicide of Alan Wilson. His death sparked reconstruction within the group and member changes have continued throughout the past five decades. In 1981, vocalist, Bob Hite collapsed and died of a heart attack and in 1997, Henry Vestine died in Paris, France following the final gig of a European tour. In 2019, original bass player, Larry “The Mole” Taylor passed away with cancer. Despite these untimely deaths, Canned Heat has somehow survived. They have played more festivals, biker gatherings and charity events than any other band in the world. They and/or their music have been featured on television and in films. Now, more than fifty years later and with forty albums to their credit, Canned Heat is still going strong. They have been anchored throughout the past fifty-five years by the steady hand of drummer/band leader and historian, Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra. Fito's book, “LIVING THE BLUES” tells the complete and outrageous Canned Heat story of “Music, Drugs, Death, Sex and Survival” along with over 100 captivating pictures from their past and is available through the band's merchandise page. FIto de la Parra joins us this week to share tales of his incredible journey. I hope you enjoy the story of Canned Heat. Legendary iconic drummer Carmine Appice drops by to chat about The Rod Experience shows....his release of Beck, Bogart and Appice Boxed set "Live From Japan" and more! As drummer for Vanilla Fudge, Carmine Appice set the grooves for the groundbreaking band‘s 1967 psychedelic debut, inadvertently inventing Stoner Rock in the process. In ‘76, he joined Rod Stewart‘s band, touring, recording and writing two of Stewart‘s biggest hits, “Do Ya Think I‘m Sexy' and “Young Turks.' He left Stewart to record his first solo album, “Rockers', and tour Japan and North America with an allstar band. . In the early 80's, he toured with OZZY Osborne ,Ted Nugent . In the mid 80's, he formed King Kobra for two Capitol albums and international touring And in the late 80's, Carmine played on a Pink Floyd record “Momentary Lapse of Reason' and formed Blue Murder with Whitesnake‘s John Sykes and The Firm‘s Tony Franklin. In the early 90s, he pounded away soul-style for The Edgar Winter Group. As an educator, Carmine was the first to legitimize rock drumming with his landmark book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, selling over 400,000 copies (now in video format). He was the first Rock Drummer and Rock Musician to conduct instructional clinics and symposiums around the world.https://carmineappice.net

What does a lifelong hardcore punk rocker do when the band life ends? You start an art gallery, travel the world, become a Dad, and keep on tapping into your creativity. At least that was Jason Hamacher's answer. On this episode we talk hardcore punk, being young, thinking different, and finding the most honest version of ourselves in mid life. I met Jason at the Punk Rock Museum. He was at the base of the steps "high fiving" guests as they ventured upstairs to check out Rikki Ercoli's never before seen iconic rockstar photography exhibit. This is Jason Hamacher's amazing story and lessons to share. Learn more about Jason's gallery here. lostorigins.gallery

Episode # 195 - Rocker Steve Riley of Riley's LA Guns talks new album "The Dark Horse." Riley's L.A. Guns have announced the release of their upcoming single 'Rewind' via Golden Robot Records. Featuring Steve Riley, Kelly Nickels, Scott Griffin and Kurt Frohlich. This is the second track from the band leading up to their highly anticipated new album The Dark Horse. 'Rewind' tackles the complex relationship lulls surrounding infidelity. "Rewind is about how something so sweet can turn so sour," says Kelly Nickels. It's a tale as old as time; finding someone really special and becoming involved, then as time passes you learn they are cheating on you and stringing you along with lies. The feeling of frustration sinks in as you realise you have to end it and wish you could go back and “rewind” and make different decisions. "As expected another blistering assault by Riley's L.A. Guns. I cannot wait for the world to hear their second album – it will definitely set them apart from all others," says Golden Robot Global Entertainment Founder and CEO Mark Alexander-Erber. To accompany their new single 'Rewind,' the band are releasing a limited edition bundle series of vinyls. With each single leading up to the release of their new album The Dark Horse, Riley's L.A. Guns are putting out a limited edition bundle, with bundle #2 out for pre-order today. Each bundle will include a limited edition red 7" vinyl and a different coloured 12" of the upcoming album, with bundle #2 12" being a red and black splatter. You can pre-order Bundle #2 and listen to 'Rewind' on February 17. Riley's L.A. Guns will announce their upcoming tour dates shortly. All dates can be found at: https://laguns.net

Chris Slade has had an extraordinary career behind the drum kit. While most US rock fans remember him as the bald madman from Thunderstruck with AC/DC, he started his career in the 60s as part of Tom Jones band, The Squires. From there the luminaries he's played with include Olivia Newton-John, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Gary Numan, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, Gary Moore, AC/DC, Asia, Michael Schenker and more. He's touring this year with his band, The Chris Slade Timeline, which includes songs from all the bands he's played with over the decades. Did you know he was asked to do a session with Dizzie Gilespie? He recalled playing with the Count Basie Orchestra, getting phone calls from David Gilmour and Jimmy Page within 2 hours of each other and how he put his signature on Thunderstruck.A warm chat with a charming Welshman covering 7 decades of rock!A Member of the Pantheon Podcast Network - https://pantheonpodcasts.com/@ugly_werewolf@actionjax72@SladeTimeline
It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.New to InObscuria? Keith Moon was rock's wildest character in the Sixties and Seventies, an unapologetic freewheeling hedonist whose lifestyle became synonymous with the mad, carefree image of the rock star at large. He courted the press and became notorious as ‘Moon The Loon', the incorrigible clown who respected no authority whatsoever and never knew the meaning of the word embarrassment. As The Who became massively popular worldwide, Keith Moon became a celebrity, not just as a drummer, but as the mad jester to rock's high court whose exploits included cross-dressing and elaborate practical jokes. Keith Moon was more than just rock's greatest drummer, he was also its greatest character and wildest party animal. Fuelled by vast quantities of drink, drugs, insecurities and confusion, Moon destroyed everything with gleeful abandon: drum kits, houses, cars, hotels, relationships and, finally, himself. Stop Me… Ep028 - Billy Talent Ian D’Sa Led Zeppelin Bonham Best Rock Drummer All - Time (06 11 ’19) by Todd Hancock
Charlie Mills has played drums with legendary rock bands, and has now carved a career as a business coach and an addiction recovery counsellor. We talk to him about his career and the differences in mentality between success and failure.
The ’80s hair-metal scene is known for a lot of things, fitness and wellness not normally included. But try telling that to Bobby Rock, an accomplished drummer and fitness enthusiast who committed to a healthy lifestyle back in 1984, just as his career was getting off the ground. (“One night,” he writes, in his new book The Boy is Gonna Rock, “in the back lot of a Red Roof Inn somewhere in Mississippi, I did so many sets of squats I could barely walk the next day—no exaggeration.”) His dedication is real. He’ll perform a full set on stage and then head to the gym (often after midnight) to get in a workout. He ran two marathons largely because his mother was a runner. He is a quiet leader, loves animals, supports several animal-welfare organizations and has been a strict vegan since 1993. He meditates. He’s written nine books and has toured with the likes of Slaughter, Nelson, Vinnie Vincent Invasion and more. And, at 54, he’s still drumming — currently on the road with metal icon Lita Ford — and is injury free. Incredibly thoughtful and pleasant, Rock chatted with me about the physical nature of drumming, the ins and outs of his workouts and how his life would be different had he not chosen to get fit. Follow Bobby on Twitter @bobbyrocklive and Instagram @bobbyrocklive. Find him on Facebook @BobbyRockWorld. For more on his fitness, nutrition, music, musings and more, go to bobbyrock.com. Check out his new book, The Boy Is Gonna Rock (Zen Man Publishing). Show notes can be found at fitmixtape.com. While you’re there, sign up for our weekly newsletter. Follow the show on Instagram @fitmixtape and on Twitter @fitmixtape. Have a comment, question, suggestion or killer playlist? Send an email to fitmixtape@gmail.com. Bobby Rock is a world-renowned drummer, author of nine books, speaker, entrepreneur, activist, devout vegan, and a recognized health and fitness specialist, with certifications in exercise, nutrition, and meditation. He has recorded and performed with a variety of artists, including Vinnie Vincent Invasion, Nelson, Slaughter, Rare Earth, Brett Garsed, Neil Zaza, Gary Hoey, Hardline, Nitro, Scrap Metal, Alcatrazz feat. Graham Bonnet. the Stu Hamm Band, and is currently touring with rock icon, Lita Ford. He has also released several CDs and toured extensively as a solo performer, and is recognized as a top drumming educator. Additionally — through speaking, writing, and activism — Bobby remains committed to a number of animal and environmental causes. On Bobby’s playlists: “A startling variety,” including AC/DC, Black Sabbath, funk, R&B, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
Join Randy Thomas, Mark Nardone, and Anita Gevinson as they chat with music biz consultant, author, and rock drummer - Bobby Borg. Bobby talks about music marketing, business basics and useful tools for the DIY musician, as well as his days recording and touring with Beggars & Thieves, Left For Dead, and Warrant.
Jon talks about his years with Brisbane band Powderfinger, the end of the band and the start of a new career as a journalist.
You name the popular rock act, Kenny Aronoff has probably laid the beat for them. The long time John Melloncamp drummer will be back in town with John Forgerty the next few weeks at the Wynn Casino.Aronoff has a book about his career, "Sex, Drums, Rock 'n' Roll: The Hardest Hitting Man in Show Business" came out last year and we only just scratched the surface in his last interview. We will talk to Aronoff about his current projects and dive into more of his rocking past.
John Bailey interviews IU alumnus Kenny Aronoff who has spent more than three decades as one of the most visible drummers in rock and pop music.
Rock drumming legend Kenny Aronoff reflects on a moment when he knew he would either hit paydirt or be sent packing.
It’s hard to categorize Todd Sucherman. Sure, he’s most notably known for being the drummer in Styx, but he’s also a clinician, writer, and educator who has released two DVDs and was named #1 Rock Drummer and #1 Clinician in the Modern Drummer and Drum Magazine Reader’s Polls. The Chicago native grew up under the influence […] The post 220 – Todd Sucherman: Conquering Rock, one world tour at a time appeared first on Drummer's Resource: Conversations with the world's greatest drummers and music industry pros..
