Making a Scene Presents an Interview with John Wort HannamIn 2001 John Wort Hannam quit his teaching job and spent 10 months depleting his savings while sat at his kitchen table, wearing a lucky hat, writing his first ten songs. Those songs would become his first recording Pocket Full Of Holes, released in 2003.Seventeen years later, the Alberta musician is releasing his seventh full-length recording Acres Of Elbow Room and has a few feathers in that lucky hat for his first six offerings. Feathers that include a JUNO nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Album of the Year, a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award, a Kerrville Texas New Folk win, and numerous Western Canadian Music Award and Canadian Folk Music Award nominations.
We're heading back to Alberta for another interview on Episode 609 of Folk Roots Radio. This time around we are in Lethbridge to chat to John Wort Hannam about his new album “Long Haul”. The follow up to 2018's "Acres Of Elbow Room", it was recorded in lockdown, during pandemic times. A lovely, relaxed, warm feel to it - it's a timely reflection on relationships and life in general and what we all miss when we're not able to spend time together. As always, we wrap up the rest of the episode with more new releases, and this time around we hear from Dizzy & Fay, Margot Merah, Katie Spencer, Mick Flannery & Susan O'Neill, Doc Watson with Merle Watson, Julian Taylor, Chris LaVancher and Josh Ritchie. If you like the artists you hear on this show and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music and then you'll really make a difference to their income during this difficult time when it's much more challenging to find live shows. Folk Roots Radio is a labour of love - a full time hobby. John Wort Hannam hails from Alberta, where he started out writing narrative story songs and character sketches and carved out a name for himself singing those songs and telling those stories all across Canada and beyond. He made a couple of albums independently, then a couple with the help and backing of influential and successful producer Steve Dawson, which were released on Steve's Black Hen Music. In 2011, John and his wife Jenny welcomed a son, Charlie, and he started writing more personal songs, exposing more of his own feelings and experiences. That's where he really found his stride as a songwriter and began to create his most meaningful work. Wanting to record closer to home, he made a couple of albums with Leeroy Stagger, who was my guest on the first episode of Fly with your Shadow. His latest release, 2019's Acres of Elbow Room, came about after a particularly difficult period of dark depression for John which culminated in a physical manifestation of years of undiagnosed and untreated difficulty, when he lost his voice and couldn't sing. In just a couple of weeks, on October 15, John will release a new album, again produced by Steve Dawson, called Long Haul. music credits and more information: https://wp.me/pdcjXL-7q
We're holding back the interviews again on Episode 598 of Folk Roots Radio to bring you another hour of the best new releases. There is just so much great new music out there and, sadly, so little time to play it - but we'll do our bit again on this episode. This time around we hear from Jordana Talsky, Matt Patershuk, Caroline Wiles, Efrat, Eli West, John McCutcheon, John Gage & Aaron Bibelhauser, John Wort Hannam, Red Dirt Skinners, Chris Coole, Big Little Lions, Craig Robertson, Jabbour, T. Buckley and Finny McConnell. Music Night on Bill & Paul Face The Music. Bill & Paul talk to Shred Kelly and John Wort Hannam.
It's blustery and cold out there, so why don't you listen in and let host Kailey Jane Hawkins warm you up with some great tunes made in and played in Grey and Bruce counties? On this week's show we talk about November gales, about the upcoming holiday season, and about beliefs (in things like Martin guitars and corgis). Featuring music by John Wort Hannam, Ruth Moody, Drew McIvor, Coco Love Alcorn, The Barra MacNeils, Jayden Grahlman, Eve Goldberg, The Mae Trio, The Good Lovelies, Gordon Lightfoot, The Jerry Cans, the Big Little Lions and Summerfolk 43 Youth Discoveries winner Esther's Family!

Episode 401 of Folk Roots Radio features an interview with Halifax NS based keyboard playing singer-songwriter, composer and producer Erin Costelo. Erin Costelo released the critically acclaimed “Down Below The Status Quo” in 2016 — one of our favourite albums of that year. She’s just released the follow-up “Sweet Marie”, and it’s another soulful R&B masterpiece. Erin joins us to chat about the new album before heading out on an extensive touring schedule that takes in Canada, and then the US before heading into Europe. It’s a great interview, and definitely worth sticking around for. We also have more great new releases to share with you, including new music from Moors and McCumber, Noah Derksen, John Wort Hannam, T Buckley, Miller – Macdonald – Cormier, and Kat Danser. It’s Pledge-O-Rama time again! This is the one time of the year where we turn to the listeners for their help and hope that they will support our station and help us keep moving forward, and once again, they did! Thanks to everyone who supported us. In spite of the hectic, unpredictable nature of the show, we managed to do what we always do I tell you about new music and upcoming events, and play some of the best music in the world, music that doesn’t get nearly enough attention elsewhere.

Another Pledge-O-Rama has come and gone, and I can’t say how grateful I am for the support of my wonderful listeners. Your kindness and generosity will lift me through another year, and as always, I’ll try to make the show as good as possible. I think I managed that today, by replaying the amazing live performances from Leaf Rapids on the Steel Belted Free Range Radio pledge show, along with some really great new music and previews of some shows you won’t want to miss from the likes of Matt Epp, The Wailin’ Jennys, and NQ Arbuckle!

Too much to do today and not enough time to get to it all, but we did our best and managed to squeeze in new music, requests, dedications, a preview of Kathleen Edwards’ upcoming show, and a special live in-studio visit by Redgy Blackout for some live music and conversation!

As usual tonight, we’ve got new music and upcoming shows to hype, but it isn’t every week that we’re joined by guests as lovely and talented as Andrea Romalo and Cindy Doire, otherwise known as Scarlett Jane. They’re in Manitoba for a Home Routes tour, and they kicked it all off with a visit to the studio for a chat and some live music!

It’s Easter Sunday, so that means we’re bound for trouble with a little bit of sacrilegious snarky music. We try to redeem ourselves by celebrating birthdays, paying tribute to the late great John Bottomley, and looking forward to exciting upcoming shows, including the long-awaited return of Kathleen Edwards.

It’s another incredibly busy week for shows, including the return of Sunset Saloon favourite Christina Martin and the next big show at the Saloon, John Wort Hannam! Also, Cuff the Duke, Del Barber, Matt Epp, and more do shows this week, and we try to give you the details on them all. There are also some great new CDs out now (or soon) and we heard brand new tracks from Lynn Miles, Ken Whiteley, Jim Bryson and more! And, as if that weren’t enough, through the magic of modern technology, we went LIVE to a Leeroy Stagger concert in the Netherlands!

Mudge goes solo again, and he starts off in typically miserable style with a set of Townes Van Zandt songs. Somehow, those sad songs only cheer him up, so we started previewing great upcoming shows (there are a bunch!), playing great new releases, and a bunch of just plain great music. Sounds great, to me!
On this episode, we’re blessed with a couple of pretty amazing in-studio guests, as we’re joined for conversation and live performances by Austin, TX singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt, and our old pal John Wort Hannam (and trio!) As if that weren’t enough, we have some big shows coming up this week, and previews of those!

We've got some big concert news, including a tribute to our friend Darren Day, and the next big Sunset Saloon performer, John Wort Hannam! We veer off in to Twang Trust territory with a bunch of "All Bruce, all the Time." And, after years of ignoring those requests to post the "15 albums that really matter" on Facebook, we finally have a crack at it, on-air, and discover how hard it really is to boil your life down to 15 CDs!

Another busy week of upcoming shows in Winnipeg, featuring The Wooden Sky, Jason Plumb, John Wort Hannam, and Spring Breakup, among others. We previewed those, had a listen to some Winnipeg classics, paid a birthday tribute to one of our most devoted listeners, and we still had plenty of time for new music from the mailbag and beyond!

A few upcoming shows definitely worth mentioning (Trout Forest, Gimli, John Wort Hannam, etc.) but for the most part, this show was about great music, some we haven't heard for quite some time and some we just can't get enough of.

Summertime's a great time to relax and just listen to some great music, and that's what we did for the most part today. Sure, we talked a bit about the upcoming Trout Forest Music Festival, and a bit about the glory of The Jayhawks, but other than that, it was good music and good times.

Some requests & dedications started us off on the right track. Then, it's Oscar night tonight and a couple of movies with great soundtracks are up for some big awards, so we heard some great movie music. Following that, we look ahead to March, which is music month with an outstanding lineup of shows, kicking off with John Wort Hannam & Twilight Hotel on Friday (which is technically February, but who's counting), then Josh Ritter and Two Hours Traffic on Saturday. And that's only the beginning!
