Born in Memphis is 1974, Cory Branan has been releasing albums since The Hell You Say in 2002. He released three great records on Chicago's Bloodshot Records - Mutt, The No-Hit Wonder and Adios) and his most recent LP (his 6th overall) is the excellent When I Go I Ghost in 2022. Many of his musician friends - Jason Isabel, Brian Fallon, Laura Jane Grace, Craig Finn, Jody Stephens, Ben Nichols, Sadler Baden & more - have appeared on his records. We talked with him about all of that, about his songwriting process, his Chicago experiences and his upcoming tour with his buddy Chuck Pagan. Abigail Austin Lucas is a songwriter who has been in the game for over twenty years now. She's toured with acts like Chuck Ragan, Ben Nichols (Lucero) and Cory Branan. She has a great knack at lyricism, and writing evocative songs. I teamed up with Kim Cook from the Reno Punk Flea Market and the Worst Little Podcast to speak with this incredible musician. I hope you dig it!
Tim Easton has released over 13 solo records, 4+ with his bands (Haynes Boys, Freelan Barons, Easton Stagger Phillips), appeared on records by Lucinda Williams, Cory Branan, Otis Gibbs and more, worked with EMI publishing and New West Records, busked through most of Europe, and worked with musicians such as Mike Campbell, Jim Keltner, Tift Merrit and Greg Leisz. We talk to Tim about remaining teachable, turning a passion for fishing in the Alaskan frontier into a solid touring scene, harmonizing to the ABC's in the car with his daughter, boundaries, dreaming out loud, and a whole lot more.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:Tim EastonFolk AllianceDavid SedarisTom MasonOtis GibbsChappell RoanBilly HartTupacBiggie SmallsEp 73 - Edwin McCainWilcoFleetwood MacTom PettyRoger MillerClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Please rate & review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you listen to the show!---Fantastic Fest hosts a wealth of shorts, celebrating the eclectic mix of filmmakers who make them. That being said, there was no way in hell I could cover this year's fest and not watch any, so today's episode gets into demolition derby mayhem: WRECKED A BUNCH OF CARS, HAD A GOOD TIME.Directors James P. Gannon & Matt Ferrin are currently working on a feature: HANDPAN, about a demolition derby driver stranded in the desert with only a case of beer for survival. Aspiring to shoot some test footage, their producer landed the duo and their crew an opportunity to cover the Durham Fair's demolition derby in Durham, Connecticut. What results is a dive into a world of junkers, clashing steel, DIY spray paint jobs and a gleefully reckless abandon of self-preservation.Shot with Super 8 and 16mm film cameras, the movie boasts all the grain and glory of the medium, including the happy accidents that come with using expired film. (This shit ain't cheap. Use what you have.) Whether it's the deep shadows or rich color, the movie looks gorgeous, almost as though we've time-warped into the '70s. Gannon & Ferrin play around with editing tricks of the period too; it's a nice touch. This isn't a complex feature. It essentially just plays out the event from beginning to end, but where it succeeds is in translating the anticipation, the giddiness, the pulse-pumping energy of a demolition derby through its pacing, handheld camera work and editing. This short's officially placed Durham, CT on my map & as this year's demolition derby rages on THE WEEK I POST THIS REVIEW, I wish all drivers (but especially Andrew cause he's my favorite) the best of luck.---Follow The Movies on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod and Facebook: The Movies (I have ONE slot remaining for October's listener request episode. The band began with just an upright bass, acoustic guitar, and 3 part harmony. They have recently progressed to a 5 piece band featuring keys, electric guitar, fiddle, and drums. The band is led by its two primary songwriters and frontmen, Cory Kinal (acoustic guitar) and Andrew Massey (electric guitar, keys). Their new album “Someone Who Knows” puts on display the same lyrically sensitivity fans have enjoyed from the duo backed by a broader soundscape reminiscent of bands like the Old 97's, REM, and Wilco. “Invites—and earns—the Paul Simon comparisons,” raves American Songwriter about Chris Milam, the acclaimed singer-songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee. Milam's first two albums—Kids These Days and Meanwhile—earned him widespread critical acclaim. Years of dogged, grassroots touring earned him a dedicated fanbase across the US & UK. Collaborations and co-bills with Stax legend William Bell, Valerie June, Amanda Shires, Cory Branan, Garrison Starr, and more earned Milam's reputation as an ascendent artist to watch. Now, Chris Milam is set to release his third album, Orchid South: a kinetic, slyly subversive rock record inspired by the music and events of his adolescence. These eleven portraits of teenage life draw a direct line from the tumult, thrill, depression, and anger of youth to the chaos of the present.

This is Episode 119 and our guest for the second time is Cory Branan. Y'all, Cory is one of my all time favorite musicians. He is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Memphis whose career has meant so much to so many. His latest record is on a ton of best of 2022 lists. It's called When I Go I Ghost and I think it is the best thing he has done. The record features such guests as Garrison Starr, Jason Isbell, and Brian Fallon, and Eric Slick among others. It is a special piece of art and I am grateful for the opportunity to pick Cory's brain about how this wonderful album came together.

Host J.D. Reager shares an on-stage moment with guests Cory Branan and Alicja Trout (Alicja-Pop, River City Tanlines). This episode was recorded live on March 17, 2022 in Memphis, TN at The Green Room in Crosstown Arts.
This is an episode that I've been looking forward to since before (*both laugh*) was even an idea for a show. I was introduced to Sarah Shook's music when their debut album, Sidelong, was rereleased by Bloodshot Records back in 2017 (it had initially been self-released by their band, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, several years prior but I was waaaay out of the loop at that point). I found Sidelong to be an interesting listen; it felt like it ran a real throwback country-and-western vibe through a little bit of a modern roadhouse filter. It certainly wasn't like much else I listened to at the time, and Sidelong and its follow-up, 2018's Years, even stood out amongst the large quantity of Bloodshot artists I'd been listening to for a long time (Cory Branan, Scott H. Biram, Murder By Death, Lydia Loveless, etc). The Disarmers went into the studio in California to record their third album in early 2020, just as the world was on the cusp of shutting down for the foreseeable future. Label issues and supply chain issues and inability to tour issues got in the way got in the way, as they're wont to do. Fast forward to 2022 and Sarah Shook is on the cusp of releasing their third album. It's called Nightroamer and it's on a new label (Thirty Tigers) and it's really, REALLY good. Fans of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers will certainly find plenty of recognizable sounds, but there are left turns and even-further-left turns and some new and different subject matter. All of that results in an immensely compelling listen, easily their best output to date. We caught up with Sarah to talk at length about the new album; from finishing the recording roughly a week before the pandemic became "a thing" in the States, to the obvious label issues, to the choice of when to actually release it to the world. We also talked about some of the subject matter; parts of the album were written after Shook got sober, and obviously created a very different writing process for them this time around. Perhaps most compellingly, we talked about their increasing involvement as a vocal force to be reckoned with, advocating for the elevating of queer and non-white voices in the country music world. Oh, and we talked about their growing up in strictly religious household and teaching themselves to play guitar and write songs in spite of having no popular music frame of reference, a concept that is truly mind-boggling to me. Nightroamer is due out February 18th. Pre-orders are still available here: https://www.disarmers.com/store/Music-c23349544 You can also check out the Disarmers' videos and live performances and more on their YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/c/SarahShooktheDisarmers/videos (*both laughs*) theme song is an excerpt from [laughs] track "Hurts To Laugh." © KALI MASI 2021 ℗ Take This To Heart Records 2021

Cory Branan is an incredibly prolific singer/songwriter from Memphis Tennessee. He's been recording albums since the early 2000s and has made a name for himself as a performer and recording artist ever since. His last few records have been released by Bloodshot Records, and he has spent the last number of years touring in support of his releases. From a personal perspective, he's one of my favorite songwriters of all time. I put him up there with the greats, like Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. His thought provoking lyrics infuse humor and wit into some of the most difficult topics in American life, and explore the complexities of our modern life. We chatted about his song "Another Nightmare in America" which explores the issue of police brutality. I appreciate his honesty, and courage to address such issues in his music. I hope you enjoy this interview, check out his catalog. I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy.
We looked at the city's number of measles cases last week on episode 21, and new numbers this week show that the outbreak continues to grow. Within the city, there have now been 498 total confirmed cases, and increase of 32 over last week, and in data from the CDC, the nationwide total is now at 839. A new school has been ordered closed this week for failure to follow the city health commissioner's public health emergency plan introduced last month. On May 13th, the city ordered the Yeshiva of Central Queens closed for failing to "exclude unvaccinated students for 21 days following a known exposure at the school." This is the 9th school closed by the city, and all others have since been allowed to reopen after modifying their practices to comply with the emergency plan. This outbreak is the worst the United States has seen since 1994, when the yearly total was 928 cases nationwide. In response to the ongoing outbreak of measles, the city has partnered with local (hut 'zu lah) Hatzolah emergency medical groups and the Maimonides Medical Center to make the measles vaccine available to the community, regardless of medical insurance or ability to pay. Various times and locations are available on a poster provided by the city that you can view online, or you can call 311 for more information or stop by the Hatzolah offices Boro Park, Williamsburg, or Flatbush. Within the city, Orthodox Jewish communities are hardest hit due to a combination of unvaccinated individuals and travelers returning from Israel, where there has been an outbreak of measles since last year. In the city health department data, Williamsburg has the highest total number of cases, at 379, and has added 20 new cases just in the previous week. The city has also carried through with restrictions outlined in an official health department declaration from last month, closing multiple schools and citing 98 individuals for failing to show proof of vaccination or to obtain a new vaccination. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. FDNY fire investigators determined the cause to have been an open flame on the stove, and that Andrea Pollidore had a habit of disabling the smoke detector while she cooked because it would begin to alarm so easily. A source told NBC4 that the stove was found in the "on" position, so it seems to have been left burning at some point that day and eventually fire spread late in the night, when smoke overtook the apartment before the family inside could escape. This triangle at the corner of 93rd and FDR Drive is nicely landscaped and surrounded by a low, decorative fence, and inside is a large stone monolith that reads "East River Drive Triborough Bridge Approach". This marker is from the 1930s when both the East River Drive (FDR Drive) and the Triborough Bridge (RFK Bridge) were built and is giving drivers some very advance notice that this road leads to the bridge on-ramp at 125th Street, much like the green overhead highway signs do today. Wolf and Cobra belly flop into The Marinade! This is our silliest episode to date and a dream come true. Cory Branan and Jon Snodgrass are two of our all-time favorite songwriters. Branan's new record Adios was released in 2017 and is one of our favorite records of the year. Snodgrass is best known for his work with Drag the River but also has an excellent solo catalog as well as work with the bands Scorpios and Armchair Martian. We joke about Jon's indecipherable emails and proclivity for 'playing' drums, dive deep into political waters, and discuss the creative process for each of these brilliant writers. corybranan.com jonsnodgrass.com

Over the course of three albums now, Josh Tillman has made quite the reputation for himself as provocateur extraordinaire Father John Misty. On Pure Comedy, Tillman/Misty is letting it all hang out in a gaudy, profane, philosophically perverse masterpiece that transcends the swarmy persona that people love to hate by speaking up about nothing less than what it is to be human in the modern age. Plus! Cory Branan is back with a new LP (Adios) and we've got the single "Imogene" to help you get re-acquainted with this talented singer/songwriter. It’s Pledge-O-Rama time again! This is the one time of the year where we turn to the listeners for their help and hope that they will support our station and help us keep moving forward, and once again, they did! Thanks to everyone who supported us. In spite of the hectic, unpredictable nature of the show, we managed to do what we always do I tell you about new music and upcoming events, and play some of the best music in the world, music that doesn’t get nearly enough attention elsewhere.

I know you hear an awful lot around these parts about Lucero and Cory Branan, but I swear, they don't pay us for this. Hell, they'd have to be an awful lot more famous before they could even afford our bar tab. No, we talk endlessly about them because they are made of one hundred percent natural homegrown awesomeness. What's more awesome that going to see their shows? Having them come to HCT HQ to record a podcast. That's right, my babies, Ben Nichols of Lucero and Cory Branan, together, not only for one of their Brew City Tours, but right here in our living room mocking each other, us and everything else in the world. What we have here in the end is a podcast that goes from soft and subdued to a little raucous. You'll want to tune in for the songs and the stories. You'll enjoy the second listening to suss out the funny bits happening in the background. Besides the banter, we have: Meantime Blues - Cory Branan Into Your Eyes - Ben Nichols Easy (Cory Branan) - Ben Nichols It Gets the Worst at Night (Lucero) - Cory Branan Amnesia - Cory Branan Across the River - Ben Nichols Little Heartbreaker - Cory Branan When You You Decided to Leave - Ben Nichols I know we're uo to number 9 on the podcast now, and yet I'm still figuring this thing out. We did well here, though you might want to keep your finger by the volume button for when it gets a bit louder after the initial songs. It wasn't a technical problem, we all just got a bit rowdier.
