Well here we are - the final episode of 2021 and our very first Christmas Special! In this episode I am excited to share two conversations with you. My first is with JUNO Award winning Singer/Songwriter Catherine MacLellan. On November 26th 2021, Catherine released her debut Christmas EP - “Holiday”. Consisting of 3 beautiful renditions of holiday classics and 1 original Christmas song that Catherine wrote during the winter of 2020, we talk about why this was the time to record and release her first Holiday project, a collection of songs she self-engineered and self-produced. We get into the production timeline for the music and accompanying marketing material when putting the holiday project together in order to have successful Holiday release, what being a JUNO award winner has done for her musical career, and why nearly 55 years later, Catherine and her family are re-releasing her father - Gene MacLellan's debut record. After that, I will be joined by the JUNO Award winning trio - Good Lovelies, for an incredibly fun conversation that includes discussions about their annual Christmas tour which includes as stop at the newly renovated and recently reopened Massey Hall, the secret to writing an original Christmas song - of which they've written many - and some holiday traditions they look forward to every. It's a great way to cap off a wonderful year for the podcast. If you have music you would like us to hear, or have a great release day rollout plan you want the world to know about, send an email with your EPK and release plan to: contactreleaseday@gmail.comThank you so much for listening, and Welcome to Release Day!Theme music composed by Evan Denley.Reference Links:Catherine MacLellan website - https://www.catherinemaclellan.com/Gene MacLellan website - http://genemaclellan.com/Good Lovelies Website - https://goodlovelies.com/Decolonial Clothing - https://decolonialclothingco.ca/Release Day Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0GbiC5YorhQObK1n3FndhJ?si=l0sbbP1ARnaWaDbFRVzpEwRelease Day Website - https://releasedayseries.com/"Release Day," an ongoing series where we sit down with Canadian musicians of all genres to discuss their latest releases from singles to albums, and their strategy behind releasing it to the world.https://releasedayseries.com/https://twitter.com/ReleasedaySrshttps://www.instagram.com/releaseday_series/
It's getting close to 'that time of year'. We know that because wonderful vocal trio Good Lovelies, that's Caroline Brooks, Kerry Ough and Sue Passmore are about to hit the road on their 16th Christmas tour. After appearing virtually last year because of the Covid pandemic, this time around they'll be taking their songs, harmonies and a kick ass band around Ontario for some in person shows. They join us on Episode 610 of Folk Roots Radio to talk about the tour, and some interesting future plans – and spoiler alert, it sounds like there is a new album in the offing. Although it feels a little too early to go into full holiday mode, we also include some wintery songs and Hanukkah songs to ease you into the holiday season, and feature music from Joni Mitchell, Bruce Cockburn, Garth Hudson with Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle, The McDades, Haley K Turner, Rachael Sage, Deborah Holland and Catherine MacLellan. Keri Latimer joins us on Episode 489 of Folk Roots Radio to talk about “Citizen Alien”, the second album from Leaf Rapids, the Winnipeg band she leads with her partner, Devin Latimer - and one of our favourite albums of 2019. Citizen Alien is a wonderful recording, and one that uses Keri and Devin's own family history to talk about the nature of identity and reflect on what it means to belong, in a world where more and more politicians are using populist nationalistic rhetoric to separate the ‘us’ from the ‘them’. It’s a really great in-depth interview - and definitely worth checking out. We can actually only share part of our conversation with you on this episode, but we’ll be bringing the full interview to the website and on demand listening very shortly. We wrap up the episode with more of Our Favourite Albums of 2019 and this time we hear from The MacQueens, Lizanne Knott, Geneviève Racette, Justin Rutledge, The Red River Ramblers, Leanne Hoffman, The East Pointers, Catherine MacLellan and Lee Harvey Osmond (Tom Wilson). Here’s my conversation with the delightful Catherine MacLellan." http://www.catherinemaclellan.com/ The Halifax Urban Folk Festival (HUFF) is a celebration of songs, the people who write and sing them, and the stories surrounding their creation. What we like to do best on this show is tell you about new music you just have to hear, and upcoming shows you just have to attend, and today we had the best of both worlds, with new music from the likes of Dala, Shuyler Jansen, Steve Earle, and the fabulous Catherine MacLellan, and some amazing upcoming shows next weekend featuring Scott Nolan/Gurf Morlix and Steve Forbert!

First up, some stellar new music from Catherine MacLellan, who, after just one listen, was guaranteed to be on my top 10 list for this year. Then, a look at one of those songwriters who I've heard of plenty, but never actually heard, Blaze Foley. For the last hour, some pleasures that you don't have to feel guilty about. I went to see Crowded House in concert, and for a brief while, I thought maybe I should feel guilty about that. HA! The audience was a who's who of music in this town, and I knew right then that not all 80s pop music is bad. So, for an hour or so, we heard some pop music (and interesting covers of pop music) that you don't have to feel guilty about liking.
