Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is the on air indie show. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 59. First, music history for July 5th. Today in 2003 made his last ever live performance when he appeared at the Carter Ranch. Before singing “Ring of Fire”, Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written before taking the stage: “The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her. We connect somewhere between here and heaven. She came down for a short visit, I guess, from heaven to visit with me tonight to give me courage and inspiration like she always has.” Cash died on Sept 12th of this year. Jamie Douglas, frontman of Ottawa rock band The Powergoats is on the show today. The Powergoats emerged on the scene in 2009. In July they release their fourth studio albumThe Powergoats in 3D. We discuss the album, spin a couple of tracks from it and find out more about the band. The band's sound is hard to pin down - retro, blues, folk and rock, and more yet indefinable music. You are going to love this band! Enjoy the show! Tracks "Ready To Be Written" 20:45 "Bowl N Pin" 38:57 From The Band The Powergoats are an Ottawa rock outfit delivering a strong range of musical dynamics and live shows entertaining thousands of people in Ontario and Quebec since they emerged on the scene in 2009. Led by singer-songwriter Jamie Douglas, the sounds of this sizable band have been described as "retro rock pre-soaked in blues, with a hint of folk". Style comparisons include The Rolling Stones, Barenaked Ladies, Grateful Dead, David Bowie, Blue Rodeo, and The Allman Brothers Band. The Powergoats' line up also features Andrew Burns (bass, vocals, keyboards), Wes Reed (drums), Jeff Logan (lead guitar), Dee Butters (vocals), Scottie Irving (keys), Zeek Gross (saxophone), Kelly Craig (trumpet), and Erik Johnson Scherger (violin). Paul MacLeod was a super talented singer/songwriter from Kitchener, Ontario. He built his reputation locally and regionally as a captivating solo performer who mixed great original songs alongside a vast and diverse repertoire of covers. He was first introduced to many of us nationally and internationally when he joined legendary, long-standing roots-rock band Skydiggers in the mid-90s. He had the difficult task of replacing founding and high-profile and much-loved member Peter Cash in the band, but he did so admirably, more than holding his own alongside the accomplished band. He brought a new edge, his acclaimed skill on the guitar, and powerful vocals. He would often open for the band, then join them for the headlining set. In addition to two Skydiggers studio albums and one live release, Paul released a great rock album with a band called Hibakusha, and four albums of his own. I took the name of his first CD for my campus and community radio show, Tell the Band to Go Home, which debuted in September, 2002. Paul was a guest on the show, and I got to know him a bit at shows and occasional correspondence. His music, wit, and energy inspired and amazed me. His albums are among my very favourites. Five years ago today, June 18, 2016, Paul took his own life. I was devastated. His music has been a mainstay on my radio show for almost 19 years. Along with John Bottomley, who I talked a lot about in episode 2 and episode 3 of this show, Paul's struggles and death contributed to my desire to further conversations about mental illness, and motivated me to create this show. I wanted to talk to some of his closest friends and get them to tell stories and remember Paul for the brilliant, creative, hilarious individual that he was. I wanted it to be honest and paint the full picture of what it was like to know Paul. It was a treat to speak to others who loved him and who miss him like I do. You'll hear more memories from my guests, and their favourite Paul MacLeod songs, and some of the songs that he covered, on the June 20 episode of Tell the Band to Go Home. Guests: Lynn Jackson - Kitchener singer/songwriter and close friend of Paul's. Find out more about her and find her music at https://lynnjackson.net/ Mark Logan - owner of Encore Records in Kitchener and of Busted Flat Records, the label that released Paul's last two albums, Bright Eyes Fade and Gauge. Mark was instrumental in Paul's career, as well as the careers of Shannon Lyon, Brock Zeman, Matt Andersen, and many more. He's an unsung hero of the Canadian music industry. Jason Schneider - these days, an in-demand publicist through his busy public relations agency, Jason Schneider Media, but a longtime music journalist and an accomplished author and musician. He was one of three musicians responsible for one of my favourite books of all time, and one that I refer to often, Have Not Been The Same: The CanRock Renaissance 1985-1995. Andy Maize - founding member and lead singer of Skydiggers, one of the most popular, accomplished, and longest-lasting bands in Canada. Their friends, colleagues, and contemporaries include Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, and episode 16 guest Suzie Ungerleider. music credits and more info: https://flywithyourshadow.com/tribute-to-paul-macleod-w-andy-maize-skydiggers-jason-schneider-mark-logan-and-lynn-jackson-episode-17
Brock Zeman and Blair Hogan may be two of my favourite people in the entire independent Canadian music scene. Blair is an amazing musician. and Brock Zeman is one of those songwriters that makes you go hmm. He is prolific. He is articulate. He should be on the radio all the time. All the formats. Brock Zeman's music has become a part of our daily fabric.
On this episode of Folk Roots Radio we talk to folklorist and fellow folk dj Amanda Lynn Stubley about “Gem”, a six track album of old time music recorded live off-the-floor with producer Deni Gauthier. We also check out more of the new music we've received including new albums from Andrea Ramolo, Brock Zeman and Lee Palmer. Check out the full playlist at http://folkrootsradio.com.
It’s Pledge-O-Rama time again! This is the one time of the year where we turn to the listeners for their help and hope that they will support our station and help us keep moving forward, and once again, they did! Thanks to everyone who supported us. In spite of the hectic, unpredictable nature of the show, we managed to do what we always do I tell you about new music and upcoming events, and play some of the best music in the world, music that doesn’t get nearly enough attention elsewhere.
Another Pledge-O-Rama has come and gone, and I can’t say how grateful I am for the support of my wonderful listeners. Your kindness and generosity will lift me through another year, and as always, I’ll try to make the show as good as possible. I think I managed that today, by replaying the amazing live performances from Leaf Rapids on the Steel Belted Free Range Radio pledge show, along with some really great new music and previews of some shows you won’t want to miss from the likes of Matt Epp, The Wailin’ Jennys, and NQ Arbuckle!

It’s the day after Record Store Day, but the celebration’s still going on! Some RSD releases, before a chat with Brock Zeman, who we’ve been blessed to have play a number of times at The Sunset Saloon, but who is now headed to town to play the big room, The West End Cultural Centre! We’ll find out how he feels and how he’s preparing for this big break. Today we also get to be the official announcer of the 2014 lineup for The Trout Forest Music Festival! AD Devin Latimer gave us a call to spill the beans and get us excited for that great festival in August.

It’s Junofest weekend in Winnipeg, and there’s so much going on that today’s show had to be pre-recorded, but I had to make sure that there was something on to celebrate great Canadian music and a couple of exciting upcoming events.

It’s not Christmas yet, but it’ll feel like it this week as we receive many gifts in the form of great upcoming concerts. Lots to celebrate and enjoy on today’s show. We’ll also celebrate last week’s show by Charlie Mars and The Dixie Chicks. The Chicks sometimes don’t get a lot of respect, but they sure do cover some great songs and hang out with some pretty special friends, so a celebration of both today. And on a less joyful note, we would be remiss if we didn’t honour Remembrance Day, so a few songs in honour of the day.

Yet another big batch of new music has come our way, and we’ve got a couple more exciting upcoming shows to preview: Justin Rutledge and Martyn Joseph. Still time for some requests, stories, and some discussion of my House Concert Host’s Manifesto.

It’s a busy week on the concert calendar, so there’s plenty for us to preview, including the return of Elliott BROOD, Brock Zeman, James Keelaghan. Also on the schedule, we chat with Rose Cousins who returns to the West End and we were planning to be visited in-studio by The Wilderness of Manitoba; sadly, we had to enact the Fred Eaglesmith Clause on that one, when their gear was locked up at a venue in Brandon so they didn’t make it in time for the end of the show. They did, however, record some songs after the show, which you can listen to at the UMFM Live Sessions page.

Pre-recorded today, but we’ve got plenty of great upcoming shows to talk about, including the return of CR Avery, the long-awaited return of Matt Mays, and a show tonight featuring one of our favourites, Sunparlour Players! The version of this show that aired on UMFM contained an interview with Andrew & Rosie of Sunparlour Players, so the last half hour of this podcast is a download exclusive.

This weekend I took a trip back to the 90s when I saw Spirit of the West in concert, and saw some folks I haven’t seen in a long time. This had me thinking about the good old days, and today’s show was loaded with retro nostalgic goodness, largely from Winnipeg’s consistently amazing music scene.

We’ve got a couple of great local bands doing holiday-time shows this week, and that’s reason to celebrate. And, we’re still toiling away on those “best of” lists (and compilations), so we sift through some more contenders.

There’s a couple of great shows coming up, featuring Brock Zeman and Tom Wilson, and while we could spend hours and hours extolling the virtues of both, we’ll do what we can in the space of a few songs. This week we also play a bunch of all-time classics for our pal Boyd, and anyone who loves great songs.

As if that weren’t reason enough to celebrate, this week sees the return of Brock Zeman and Tom Wilson to Winnipeg. Let the celebrations begin!

As we prepare to unveil our official favourite songs of 2010, we’ve noticed that there are a whole bunch of great ones that somehow didn’t make the cut. Some years, there’s just too much great stuff, and 2010 seems like one of those years. Much of today’s show is devoted to great releases from 2010 that deserve an honorary mention.

Simon & Garfunkle may not be coming to town this week, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hear some of their songs done by themselves and others. You know who is coming to town? Brock Zeman, Peter Katz, Romi Mayes, and more! We’ve also got some new, some notable, and some just plain great music.

It's Mother's Day, and there's nobody more worthy of a tribute, and so be it. We also send some musical love down to flooded Music City. We also had the usual mix of great new releases, upcoming shows you should care about, and some classics.

One more week without KK to keep it all in line, so T-Bar & Mudge have the run of the place. KK does call in to update us on her exciting travels. Musically, we revisited an amazing show full of live guests one year ago, and made an exclusive concert announcement. We preview some Folk Fest artists, play some great new music, and, yeah, we let T-Bar slip in a few as well. Not bad ones, actually!
Steel Belted Radio has been blessed with a LOT of very special guests in-studio over the course of our 6 years on the air (Sexsmith, Collett, Plumb, Brock Zeman, Deep Dark Woods, Paul Kelly, etc.), but there's one guy we've been chasing all along, Mike Plume. He blessed us with an ideal name for our show, and we've always wanted him to come into the studio and sing our theme song for us. Tonight's the night. Now, what do we hope for in the years to come?

I can't believe that I thought last week was a busy one for concerts. The next two weeks are among the busiest I've ever seen in this town, so we've got a lot to fit in, including Leeroy Stagger, Eric Bogle, BOP Ensemble, Dustin Bentall, Brock Zeman, Two Hours Traffic, The Hold Steady, and next week's in-studio guest Amelia Curran! Now that's a busy show full of great music!

Your usual brand of Steel Belted silliness from the Roots Rock Weirdoes. Tonight, an action-packed, super-sized episode chock full of great live guests, including up-and-coming singer/songwriter Dan Mangan, Roots Rock heavyweights Brock Zeman & Dan Walsh, and a great band to watch, The Deep Dark Woods. With all of those guests, I didn't even get to cut KK off all that much, but it's a fun show anyway, so tune in!

A very special celebration of great music and great friends, as we opened up the studio doors for listeners to drop by, say hello, and check out the best of 2008. Jaine was on hand with awesome holiday cookies, Jeremy was on hand for his first ever radio appearance, KK came by to help keep things running, and loyal listener Dean sat in. Many other great friends came and went, and through it all, we managed to get in some of the best music of '08 as well as a few festive classics. Also, an interview with one of my favourite discoveries of the year, Edmonton's Chloe Albert, recent winner of Best New/Emerging Artist at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Another visit from our favourite and most frequent guests, Brock Zeman, Dan Walsh, and Blair Hogan. These guys are true road warriors, cris-crossing Canada regularly, and they've got the songs and stories to prove it. Every time they come by Brock's got a new set of songs even better than the last ones, and they sound better together. The sky's the limit for these guys, and we're proud to get in on the ground floor and hitch a ride to the top. They are indeed always welcome on the show.

Music Month in Manitoba continues with one of the most solid weeks of shows we've seen in a very long time. It kicks off this afternoon with Hayes Carll playing live at Candor. Can't miss that one, so this show is pre-recorded. Hayes takes the stage again tonight opening for Corb Lund. Then, Brock Zeman & Dan Walsh are back, a stellar Townes Van Zandt tribute show on Friday, then Saturday, it's Stephen Fearing & Oh Susanna for goodness sake! How could we possibly think of anything but shows on a week like that?

How could we possibly think of anything but shows on a week like that?
Music Month in Manitoba continues with one of the most solid weeks of shows we've seen in a very long time. It kicks off this afternoon with Hayes Carll playing live at Candor. Can't miss that one, so this show is pre-recorded. Hayes takes the stage again tonight opening for Corb Lund. Then, Brock Zeman & Dan Walsh are back, a stellar Townes Van Zandt tribute show on Friday, then Saturday, it's Stephen Fearing & Oh Susanna for goodness sake! Back for another live visit are the always impressive Brock Zeman & Dan Walsh, who stopped by to chat and play for us before their set at Candor. We've known that Dan Walsh was one of the best guitar players (and nicest guys) out there for quite some time, but Zeman is quickly impressing me more and more with his great songs. These guys are welcome back any time, because somehow, they just get better & better. Sadly, all good things must come to an end, and this weekend marks Labour Day, the official end of my best summer ever. It's back to work next week (insert fake sympathy here), so a bunch of songs about work and working ended off the show nicely.
