LUCY KAPLANSKYArt + Science = Sweet Music We've all come to crossroads in our lives and our careers. Lucy Kaplansky initially chose music. Then she chose school and a doctorate in clinical psychology. She tried pursuing both passions, psychologist by day with a little music on the side. But then came those crossroads. Her many admirers are thankful that she chose a life in music. Years ago she affected lives with her work as a therapist. Now she's affecting lives with her songs. If you like the episode, please rate and review it on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. And please share it on social media and by old fashioned word of mouth.
The birth of New Wave channeled through satisfying melancholy, and covers that find polar opposites in the same song. More Than This, originally by Roxy Music, covered by Lucy Kaplansky, and by Missy Higgins. Outro music is The Second Act, also by Missy Higgins.
Lucy Kaplansky released her latest album about a year ago, and it is filled with songs that resonate and are timeless. She's coming to Caffe Lena on August 3.

Leslie Smith has shined as part of all the great folk locales, the Newport, Kerrville, and South By Southwest music festivals, and her songs have been done by many folk-greats, like Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams, although I think they are best out of Leslie's own mouth and guitar. Along the way to now she did a stint as part of a New York bluegrass band called Arabesque, but then she headed back to Pittsburgh, back to her center.
In 2021 I saw that John Gorka, was performing a virtual concert—so I bought tickets, set up a video projector, and watched him in my living room with my wife and my two boys. It was a moment of light in a dark time. So, when it came time to put together Restoring Memory: A COVIDCalls exploration of the first 2 COVID years, I took a chance and reached out—and well, he's here! From New Jersey, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. Jack Hardy's legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) was a powerful source of education and encouragement early in his career, and he won the New Folk Award in 1984 at Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival. In addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums, John released a collector's edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John's greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio. Many well known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O'Connell. John has played all over the USA and Europe at hallowed venues like Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage.
This week, we share a potpourri of favorite moments from 2002 with musical guests Los Lobos, Old and In The Gray, Jack Johnson, Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, Fairfield Four, Susana Baca, Guy Clark, and Bela Fleck with Edgar Meyer. Plus, Nick's conversation with members of the International Space Station is one you'll definitely want to hear.

“I'll Meet You Here” The New York-born Dar Williams has been crafting some of the most engaging music of the last 30 years. A graduate of Wesleyan, Williams got her start in the early '90s in Boston. She had moved there to pursue a career in theater, but inspired by contemporaries like Throwing Muses and Melissa Ferrick, Williams starting writing songs of her own and she hit the ground running, knocking out cassette-only efforts like I Have No History and All My Heroes Are Dead. Her proper full length debut The Honesty Room came out on her own label Burning Field Music and found her a fan in Joan Baez who not only later recorded some of Dar's songs, she invited Williams to tour with her. With almost 20 albums under her belt, including The Green World, Mortal City, My Better Self and her new one I'll Meet You Here, Williams has established herself as one of the most enduring and endearing songwriters out there. She's toured with Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and Ani Di Franco, recorded with everyone from John Prine to Clifff Eberhart and she formed the group Cry Cry Cry along with Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky as vehicle to honor their favorite folk numbers. An environmental activist, an educator and an author of several books ranging from YA to urban planning—her book The Tofu Tollbooth is an essential directory of natural food store-- Dar Williams kind of does it all. I'll Meet You Here is her first new album in 6 years and it's a refreshing blast of rootsy rock, introspective folk and horn-tinged Americana. This record is a melodic blast of utter musical joy. A playful lyricist who can also be so emotionally exact it's like a direct sucker punch, Dar Williams is one of our very best.
Jeff Furman is an extraordinary combination of his parents. He has the gift of intense observation of people and surroundings, while also demonstrating significant empathy. The two together allow him to predict student behavior in the classroom, making him a highly effective educator. He shared a story of clarity: Watching his girlfriend (many years ago) standing in the shallows of the ocean, hesitating to dive into the large waves, he had an insight as he observed her stepping forward and then stepping back. He asked "are you the child of Holocaust survivors?" She was. How did he know that? Because his parents were fiercely protective of him, his mother was especially fearful of potential physical harm, and he recognized the effects of that kind of upbringing in his girlfriend. This conversation was especially fascinating to me because of how his parents differed in the way their protectiveness was demonstrated in their words and actions. I was also highly curious about how Jeff sees the current impact of growing up like that on his life now, as a near-retirement aged professional. We discussed current research around generational PTSD, and I mentioned an episode of this podcast featuring Rajkumari Neogy where we referred to the studies around intergenerational trauma and epigenetics. If you're a regular listener of this show, you'll be especially pleased to hear Jeff's answer to my standard request: Tell us something about yourself that most people probably don't know. Hint: It's another musical reference! Our conversation included a lot of references to the music that lights Jeff up, history related to WWII, and a few locations in and around New York City. Here are some links to satisfy your curiosity: --- A few notes from Jeff: This is a 7-minute mini-documentary with Suzanne Vega that I'm sure you'll like. She's filmed in a cab in Manhattan on her way to the Fast Folk pasta dinner, where she is talking about how she is a little afraid of performing a new song in front of Jack Hardy and his peers, who will give constructive criticism. I met Jack Hardy also when he played at our college, and when I moved to Greenwich Village in the 80s, I got to spend some time with him. A lot of the singer-songwriters I interviewed were part of his circle. He was a very talented songwriter and very good singer and performer, but he became more known especially for helping providing the venue (Fast Folk) that others spring-boarded from, especially Suzanne Vega, Lucy Kaplansky, The Roches, and Shawn Colvin. I loved all these talented people and it was a very rich experience for me meeting and interviewing them for the Bergen Record (leading New Jersey newspaper) and Performing Songwriter Magazine. Publishing these articles helped me get my first book contract. https://youtu.be/2TzVQOjfE_U Here is Tom Russell performing the song he wrote: “MANZANAR” about the Japanese internment camp, from the perspective of a Japanese American who was imprisoned there after the attack on Pearl Harbor. I selected this song from Tom's albums for the interview I did with him for Performing Songwriter Magazine. https://youtu.be/0BW3rFEdCxY And my favorite of all the folk groups part of the Fast Folk scene was The Roches (3 sisters: Terre, Suzzy, and Maggie Roche). I think this is one of their best songs/videos: “Mr. Sellack.” It captures their writing, singing, humor and charm really well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQMwU3TrVE0 Connect with Jeff on LinkedIn, visit his website, and check out his series of project management books here. --- ABOUT SARAH: "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

He is the leader of the Jon Herington Band and has been the guitarist of choice with the iconic band Steely Dan for both recording and touring since 1999. With the launch of Adult Entertainment, Jon now has five solo releases in his discography. His previous release, Time on My Hands, was nominated for Vintage Guitar Hall of Fame Album of the Year.In recent years Jon expanded into education and is currently offering instruction via TrueFire, the world's most comprehensive library of guitar instruction. The TrueFire Ear IQ series currently has two offerings, “Reactive Improvisation: Develop Big Ears and Powerful Improvisation Skills” and “Soloing Strategies: Creative and Harmonic Approaches for Crafting Solos”. In 2015, Jon released “Arrangements for Guitar”, a collection of 18 songs arranged for solo guitar, presenting the unique “chord melody” style of solo jazz guitar that impressed him as a young player.Jon's love for music surfaced early, and he studied piano, saxophone, and harmony in his grade school years. Just before his high school years, however, he developed a passion for pop music and the electric guitar, and soon was writing songs and performing with his own band near his New Jersey Shore home doing opening slots for local hero Bruce Springsteen, beginning a performing career that has continued ever since. College followed, with extensive musical studies in both classical and jazz composition and theory at Rutgers University, and private jazz guitar study, with the help of a National Endowment for the Arts grant, with the late, great jazz guitarist, Harry Leahey. Next came several years of study with the late Dennis Sandole, the acclaimed music teacher from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who once taught the late greats James Moody and John Coltrane.Jon's gigging life took a detour for about three years when he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, home to jazz guitar great Wes Montgomery. There Jon played jazz, with the many accomplished local players and former band-mates of Wes, including Wes's brother Buddy Montgomery, "Killer" Ray Appleton, "Pookie" Johnson, and organist and vocalist Terry Hayden, as well as the many talented young players who were students or residents in Indiana, including Jim Beard, Bob Hurst, Kenny Aronov, Chris Botti, and Shawn Pelton. Jon also began doing extensive session work at the time in several of the local studios and played on dozens of jingles and albums. After a return to the New York area, Jon began the challenging process of establishing a working life in New York. His work included performing with many different bands and for many Broadway shows, session recording, teaching, and an occasional writing or arranging job.Jon's debut release in 1992 titled The Complete Rhyming Dictionary (remastered and retitled as Pulse and Cadence) was an instrumental recording, showcasing eight of his own compositions as well as the brilliant playing of keyboardist Jim Beard, bassist Victor Bailey, drummer Peter Erskine, and percussionist Arto Tuncboyacian.Since late 1999, Jon has been the guitarist of choice with Steely Dan for both recording and touring. Jon has also toured with Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, Bette Midler, the Jim Beard group, The Blue Nile, Phoebe Snow, Madeleine Peyroux, Bobby Caldwell, Catherine Russell, Rob Morsberger, saxophonist Bill Evans, the contemporary jazz superband Chroma, Lucy Kaplansky, jazz/blues organ great Jack McDuff, and The Dukes of September (a supergroup featuring Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, and Michael McDonald). Some of Jon's recording highlights (aside from Adult Entertainment, Time On My Hands, shine (shine shine), Like So, and Pulse and Cadence) are the Walter Becker release Circus Money, the most recent Donald Fagen release Sunken Condos, as well as his prior release Morph the Cat, the Steely Dan albums Two Against Nature (Grammy Award Winner) and Everything Must Go, Jim Beard's five recordings (the first four co-produced by Jon), two Bill Evans records, Escape and Starfish and the Moon, Michael "Patches" Stewart's Penetration, Bob Berg's Riddles and Virtual Reality, Lucy Kaplansky's 10 Year Night, Michael Brecker's Now You See It...(Now You Don't), Randy Brecker's Toe to Toe, Victor Bailey's Bottoms Up, Chroma's Music on the Edge (with Mike Stern and others), Rob Morsberger's The End of Physics, Relativity [Blues], A Periodic Rush of Waves, The Chronicle of a Literal Man, Ghosts Before Breakfast, A Part of You, and the DVD Rob Morsberger Live, and Lynne Robyn's Red Bird in Snow, one of Jon's production efforts. Jon can also be seen on Steely Dan's live Two Against Nature DVD, the Making of Aja DVD from the “Classic Albums” series and the Dukes of September Live at Lincoln Center DVD. Jon's current work remains a combination of free-lancing as a guitarist and producer in New York, song-writing and band-leading work with his own group, and world-wide touring in support of some of the world's most renowned musical artists.

Lucy started out singing in Chicago folk music clubs as a teenager. The New York Times noted, "Easy to predict stardom for her." But, convinced her calling was in another direction, Lucy dropped it all to become a clinical psychologist. But she never stopped singing. She was often pulled back in to the studio by her friends - now with record deals -, singing on records with Sean Coleman, Nancy Griffith, Suzanne Vega on 'Pretty in Pink' the movie, and commercial credits for Chevy with "Heartbeat of America." Her voice has remained in high demand by her peers. Her new album, "Everyday Street," features songs about family, loss, and discovery. I’ll let Elaine tell you about herself:I have been playing guitar since my college days when I soul searched for a guitar maestro. I began my training with classical guitar. Folk music soon came a-calling and I met weekly with an excellent finger-picking teacher, Jerry Lund. I was introduced to singer songwriters Shawn Colvin,John Gorka, Nancy Griffith, Richard Shindell, and Lucy Kaplansky. I love writing music, poetry, and instrumentals. I also experiment with alternative tunings and a mashup of capos to create unusual and airy chords.

I’ve been a fan of Dar’s since the late 90’s when I first heard Cry Cry Cry, the band (and eponymous album) she recorded with Richard Schindell and Lucy Kaplansky. I’m sure I still have that on tape somewhere (yeah, I still have all my tapes from way back). Dar is a singer-songwriter with about 20 or so albums to her name as well as several books including her most recent, What I Found in a Thousand Towns. She is a great observer of culture and human behavior and what strikes me most about her music, her recent book and this conversation is that she is quite the optimist. I think that someone who is such a keen observer could easily fall into seeing the world from the dark side. But she doesn’t. She not only sees the good but she is also a problem solver – which is exactly why she published this book which was borne out of her observing towns across the country. It hasn’t all been easy for Dar and in this conversation, she does talk about her bouts with depression and her suicidal thoughts. But, as you’ll hear, she owns it. She doesn’t shy away from talking about her low points or beliefs and that right there makes her pretty bold in my book. I know you’ll love this conversation with the amazing Dar Williams. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? https://lucykaplansky.com/A delightful conversation with a beautiful talented woman. "I’m thrilled to announce the release of my first solo album in six years, Everyday Street. It’s the most acoustically based, an intimate album I’ve ever made: just me and multi-instrumentalist Duke Levine (J. Geils Band, Mary Chapin Carpenter), and features harmonies by my old friends Shaw Colvin and Richard Shindell. "Remember every artist deserves to get paid for their music. (newclevelandradio.net)

Richard Shindell is back with a new CD of original songs " and that in itself is remarkable. 'Careless' is a project that stretched out over three year, between his work on The Pine Hill Project with Lucy Kaplansky and his life in Buenos Aires, Argentina (where he lives with his family). Shindell calls his new songs "ambitious and lush" and they stretch his musical sound into a place that is a little more electric blues than before. The collection is filled with the life stories and moments in time that make Shindell one of the most-powerful songwriters of his generation. Richard Shindell made his way to Beehive Studios in Saranac Lake, New York, to talk about the power of change and to play a few songs from 'Careless.' Hear the interview and watch exclusive performance videos.
Richard Shindell's songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be. Taking up the guitar at the age of eight, he made his first attempts at songwriting during college, where he studied Philosophy. After college and a nine month stint in a Zen Buddhist community in Upstate New York, he headed to Europe with his guitar, performing in the Paris Metro. Upon running out of money, and despite being an atheist, he was accepted by Union Theological Seminary (NY), beginning his studies in 1986. Three years in an M.Div. program did nothing to cure him of his atheism. However, it did inspire his first "keeper": "On a Sea of Fleur de Lis."More songs followed. He began frequenting a well-known songwriters circle on Houston Street in New York City. He started to think of himself as a songwriter, abandoning his theological studies. He released solo albums and, in 1998, Shindell joined forces with his friends Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky to make 'Cry Cry Cry' (Razor and Tie), leaving audiences spellbound by their gorgeous three-part harmonies. By then Shindell was beginning to stretch out as a harmony singer, guitarist and performer. With each successive record he toured relentlessly, building a solid following of loyal fans. Although known primarily as songwriter, Shindell takes a more holistic view of his career. Producer, writer, singer, guitarist, interpreter: it all adds up to a life in music.Shindell is back with a new CD of original songs " and that in itself is remarkable. If you’ve seen Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald and even Steely Dan in concert at some point over the past twenty years, chances are you’ve witnessed guitarist Drew Zingg. Born and raised in New York City, Zingg earned his reputation as a guitarist that knows no boundaries when it comes to musical styles. Having spent nearly ten years in the New York club scene, backing artists such as Shawn Colvin and Lucy Kaplansky, as well as lending his talents to jingles, Broadway productions and session work, Drew found himself along side Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, touring with the New York Rock and Soul Revue. This opened the door for Drew, who eventually spent two years as Steely Dan’s guitarist and music director and has toured with Boz Scaggs since 1996. On November 1, Drew is set to release his debut, self-titled solo album that contains original material, as well as a few covers with unique arrangements and were recorded and produced by Drew’s long-time friend, George Petit. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome, Drew Zingg.

JOHN GORKA AND ELIZA GILKYSON are considered two of the best contemporary Singer/songwriters touring today. These longtime friends recently teamed up with Lucy Kaplansky to form the super folk group Red Horse. The trio's self titled debut CD was released last year and it became an instant folk classic and a big hit with fans. JOHN GORKA is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who was raised in New Jersey and came out of New York City's Greenwich Village folk scene that produced such songwriters as Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. His award-winning songs have been recorded and performed by such notable artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith and Mary Black. John has recorded eleven solo albums, six on Red House Records. His latest is So Dark You See. ELIZA GILKYSON is a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter, who has become one of the most respected musicians in roots, folk and Americana circles. The Grammy-nominated artist was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2006, she was recognized with 3 Austin Music Awards and 4 Folk Alliance Music Awards, one of which was for "Song of the Year" for her tune "Man of God." Her latest solo CD is Roses at the End of Time on Red House Records. BLITZ THE AMBASSADOR may seem like an unusual booking for WoodSongs at first glance. The Ghanaian-born, New York-based composer, and producer unleashes psychedelic Afrobeat colors and triple-time rhymes with a lightning-fast mind, the political boldness of Chuck D, and the sixth groove sense of Fela Kuti. All set to swirls of brass, distorted guitars, and the crackle and pop of old amplifiers. However, for his WoodSongs performance, Blitz will be performing a more intimate, stripped down set. Check out his video for "Remembering The Future" to see this talented artist in action as Michael welcomes the show's first hip hop artist and explores the genre's connection to folk music.
