When it comes to thinking about the future of food, is it possible to re-imagine our individual and collective appetites around what we want it to be? Taste is subjective, sure, but it's also deeply embedded in the land, histories, politics, and sociocultural dynamics we navigate throughout our lives. And as my guest this week, Alicia Kennedy, writes, our tastes are also shaped by how we value (or don't value) ingredients and their own histories.  Alicia is a writer from Long Island. She is the author of No Meat Required: The Cultural History and Culinary Future of Plant-Based Eating, and On Eating: The Making and Unmaking of My Appetites, which is out officially as of today through Hachette. A solid episode where Jeph is in disagreement with Tyler and is trying ever so hard to change his mind. After a week of discussions, research, theorizing, and ultimately deciding on what the goals are, what is the purpose of the drill? How tight of a standard are we wanting to hold? There was quite alot of feedback regarding our target. DM's, Emails, Jephs friend, people reaching out discussing the Cranial Vault, why that should be the standard. Based off of a good theory and one man with a doctor on  his side saying "This is the way". So we took it all in. And now we present it to you. Lay it at your feet and allow you to decide. The target was modified to find a middle ground between both sides of the road. The new agency brought in three legacy agencies in Saint John, which separated out property, business, and tourism under one umbrella, added a further five municipalities and created an agency that aligned around four central pillars of visitors, residents, business investment, and students. Paulette is committed to a full singular focus on growth for her entire region and has been doing a tremendous amount of work around strategy and collaboration to ensure that they're driving revenue and defining their brand. Growth and Abundance Growth mindset and abundance mindset are the terms that defined Paulette's vision of building on the impetus of Envision Saint John's first year. Her team and partners took those philosophies to heart when considering their past performance and where they want to be in five, 10, 15, and 25 years, as well as how they could create a community legacy so the young people of the area could build a life locally. Paulette took a deliberate and very thoughtful approach by listening to all the stakeholders in all the municipalities — including mayors, and town councils, to build a prospectus that they could present to tourism operators, businesses operators, entrepreneurs, and residents to ensure global buy-in for their plans. The overarching theme of being stronger together galvanized everyone to work hard for the future. Creative Collaborations Paulette also describes some of the “risky, bold, and different” collaborations that Envision Saint John set up, including an amazingly creative collaboration with high-profile local band Tomato/Tomato that highlighted all the things that local people loved about the area in a song which became the anthem of summer 2021. She also shares how they created a series of community handbooks personalized for the visitor and how the collaborations and campaigns started in 2021 will carry the organization forward into 2022 and beyond. As I mentioned in the show, Tomato Tomato has a new record out called It'll Come Around. Check it out if you love sweet harmonies. Also thanks to Tim at Sound of Pop (Tomato Tomato's publishers) for permission to use Chasing Rainbows at the end of the show.  Iron Horse's cover of Float On (as always, I'd encourage you to listen to the whole track either before or after you listen to this week's show!) is part of a remarkably large sub-genre I'd broadly label as "bluegrass covers of pop music". Though I'd always loved some of these things as novelties (The Gourds' cover of Gin n Juice comes to mind) I had no idea of how much of this stuff was out there before researching John's story! Iron Horse alone have recorded two separate Metallica tributes, a Guns n' Roses record, as well as tributes to Nirvana and The Shins.  What I like about Iron Horse is that they seem to come by their practice of bluegrass honestly rather than playing it for "let's laugh at the poors" yucks as some of the bigger bluegrass "tributes" like this cover of Thunderstruck by Finnish band Steve n' Seagulls does.  Anyway, if you want to keep digging, there's a spotify playlist  or (even better IMHO) you can just google "bluegrass cover" of any great pop song - the harmonies and musicianship of great bluegrass players really pull out the sweetness of good pop music.Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.You don't have to be someone Keith knows to have your story on the show!
