After circling Danville and Indiana in his younger years, Nathan laid strong roots with wife and teammate, Julie Gunn, in Central Champaign raising five kids while traveling the world as a baritone operatic performer. The duo met on their first days at the University of Illinois in the program they now run together, the Lyric Theater @ Illinois. Listen as the man behind this rich voice describes singing at the MET, how the pandemic changed his lifestyle for the better, how being hidden by corn and soybeans allows him and his students to take risks they couldn't in press soaked areas like LA or NY, why auto tune has hurt modern music, why music and sports run parallel to each other and why he puts his "People Magazine Top 50 Sexiest" accolades at the bottom of his list of accomplishments. In the end, I sing Do, Re, Mi and Nathan counters putting my voice to shame. Synopsis Each summer, music lovers congregate about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago for the annual Ravinia Festival, the oldest outdoor music festival in America, and since 1936 the summer home of the Chicago Symphony. But on today's date in 2013, Ravinia was the venue for world-premiere performances of several new art songs, including “Twilight Butterfly,” by the American composer Augusta Read Thomas, a setting of a poetic text written by the composer herself. “The poetic is always in my music”, explained Thomas. “In writing ‘Twilight Butterfly' … I began with a mental picture … [of] someone, viewing a butterfly fluttering on a deep summer evening beneath the twilight moon. This imagery became so specific that writing my own lyrics was almost inescapable.” Now even at their most poetic, composers must keep practical considerations in mind, as Thomas explained: "Beyond the evocative, impressionist nature of the piece … I sought to provide a comfortable performance environment for the singer. My lyrics integrate words whose open vowel sounds suit the voice ... The piano gives the singer pitches at every entrance … [and] rubato indications allow the singer delicate rhythmic and interpretive flexibility.” Music Played in Today's Program Augusta Read Thomas (b. 1964) –Twilight Butterfly (Yvonne Redman, soprano; Julie Gunn, piano) Nimbus 6306

Part 2 of my interview with Julie Gunn. We start with some more lovely music from Ricardo and then Julie tells a funny story about accosting a hip-hop street dancer on the streets of San Francisco. She then explains about their fabulous workshops for children and institutions which started in New Jersey and then they took them all over Africa and shares about the benefits of clapping. There was another funny story about one particular prison and how the big burly prison guards took to Flamenco. Plus, what does tree-planting have to do with Flamenco dancing? I end with Julie singing a couple of songs with Ricardo from a concert they performed at my house while they were staying. www.ricardogarciaguitarist.com
I was thrilled to interview my great friend Julie Gunn, who manages her extremely talented partner of 27 years, Ricardo Garcia, world renowned, Award-winning Flamenco and Classical guitarist. They were staying with us and I had forgotten how much I drink when with a fellow Brit, so had a sore head a few mornings. Julie reveals how she is a “manifesting maven” or you might think it purely coincidental, that’s up to you. She talks about the surprising story of how she and Ricardo met, plus fascinating stories about their travels all over the world, from Edinburgh in Scotland, across Africa and to San Francisco. From female plumbers with hilarious names to accosting hip hop dancers on the streets, Julie has been one of my most interesting guests so far. At the end, Ricardo treats us to some beautiful guitar.
Nathan Gunn is a Grammy-winning operatic baritone. Between performances at the world’s greatest opera venues, Gunn and his equally gifted wife/accompanist, Julie Gunn, work as tenured professors of music at the University of Illinois. Nathan Gunn is a different sort of opera star, known for putting sex-appeal into the opera world. In 2008, People magazine listed Nathan as “One of the Sexiest Men Alive.” Catching a few moments with Nathan gives a glimpse into a very normal family man who also happens to live in a world few of us will ever experience.
