The fabulous Nancye Hayes joins me to talk about Anastasia, now playing at the Lyric Theatre — a truly spectacular production. Loosely inspired by the Romanov family and set in early‑20th‑century Russia, the show is a visual feast, complete with cinematic projections and even a Swan Lake ballet in the middle. Nancye plays the Dowager Empress, bringing immense gravitas to the role. We talk about the history behind the story and what still excites her after more than 60 years in theatre. From being drawn to the stage at the age of three to still discovering new things as a performer, this is a conversation with a true Australian theatre icon.

In this month's ARINS podcast, host Rory Montgomery chat to Fintan O'Toole and Sam McBride about their recent ARINS publication: For and Against a United Ireland. The prospect of Irish unification is now stronger than at any point since partition in 1921. Voters on both sides of the Irish border may soon have to confront for themselves what the answer to a referendum question would mean - for themselves, for their neighbours, and for their society. Journalists Fintan O'Toole and Sam McBride examine the strongest arguments for and against a united Ireland. What do the words 'united Ireland' even mean? Would it be better for Northern Ireland? Would it improve lives in the Republic of Ireland? And could it be brought about without bloodshed? O'Toole and McBride each argue the case for and against unity, questioning received wisdom and bringing fresh thinking to one of Ireland's most intractable questions. With cartoons by Fergus Boylan. The book has been shortlisted for An Post Book Award 2025 - BEST IRISH-PUBLISHED BOOK OF THE YEAR. This lively stage adaptation of Pretty Woman surprises by offering an original score (co-written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance) and genuine star turns rather than relying solely on nostalgia. The show keeps the familiar Cinderella story beats but deepens the emotional moments with strong ballads and pop-country hooks. Samantha Jade, in her first-ever stage role, and Ben Hall bring the charm. They are supported by an energetic cast. Currently playing at the Lyric Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane, Pretty Woman: The Musical runs through 9 November before it jets off around Australia. Aaron Bartz brings a grounded, thoughtful energy to the role of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and in this conversation, he shares just how much life and imagination go into keeping the magic alive night after night. From flying and fire to illusions and high-stakes contingencies, Aaron walks us through what it's like to debut on Broadway in one of the most technically demanding plays out there—and why so many actors in the production come from classical Shakespeare backgrounds. We also explore Aaron's journey from Great Falls, Montana to the Lyric Theatre in NYC, including a pivotal classroom moment that set him on the path to acting, and how a love of storytelling (and a little persistence) helped him land gigs that ultimately led to an MFA from Yale. Now a father of two, Aaron reflects on how playing Draco as a parent has shifted his own understanding of growth, vulnerability, and legacy. Aaron Bartz is an actor and writer currently starring as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. He earned his MFA from the Yale School of Drama and began his career with regional Shakespeare productions across the country. He toured nationally with the Montana Repertory Theatre in To Kill a Mockingbird, and his previous work includes Loves Labour's Lost, Macbeth, and other classical works. Clare O'Malley is an Irish singer-songwriter and actress who has captivated audiences across the world. For years, Clare O'Malley has commanded the spotlight—whether it was starring in major theatrical productions in New York City and Ireland's National Theatre, The Abbey, or appearing in films like Creed. She's taken on iconic theatrical roles, earned critical acclaim from The New York Times for delivering “one of the most astonishing performances,” and even found herself on the world's biggest musical stage—as a backing vocalist for Jedward at Eurovision in Azerbaijan. From centre stage to film sets, from Eurovision to sold-out theatres, Clare O'Malley has spent her career bringing other people's stories to life. Now, she's finally telling her own. With the release of her first two tracks on her Debut EP, New Heights and Little Weirdo, Clare is proving that her artistry goes beyond performance—she's a songwriter with something to say. A Legacy of Creativity - A Family of Storytellers: Clare O'Malley's artistic roots are firmly planted in a family legacy of creativity. Her grandmother, Mary O'Malley, founded the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, a key institution in Northern Ireland's arts scene. Her grandfather, Thomas Kinsella, was a renowned Irish poet whose work has resonated with generations. Surrounded by such a rich legacy, Clare was always destined to pursue her own path in storytelling—first as an actor, and now as a songwriter.
