Following the British conquest of Ottoman Palestine, Jews across the British Empire—from Jerusalem to Johannesburg, London to Calcutta—found themselves at the heart of global Jewish political discourse. As these intellectuals, politicians, activists, and communal elites navigated shifting political landscapes, some envisioned Palestine as a British dominion, leveraging imperial power for Jewish state-building, while others fostered ties with anticolonial movements, contemplating independent national aspirations. Uncertain Empire: Jews, Nationalism, and the Fate of British Imperialism (Stanford University Press, 2025)Context considers this intricate interplay between British imperialism, Zionism, and anticolonial movements from the 1917 British conquest of Palestine to the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Elizabeth Imber highlights diverse and sometimes conflicting visions of Jewish political futures, offering detailed case studies of key figures including Chaim Arlosoroff, Moshe Shertok, Helen Bentwich, Rachel Ezra, and Hermann Kallenbach. She explores a "politics of uncertainty" in which Jews engaged with both imperial stability and the rise of anticolonial mobilization, when many were likewise forced to reconsider Palestine as a viable refuge and political solution. Ultimately, this book provides a nuanced understanding of how the British Empire's fate became central to Zionist and broader Jewish political thought, revealing the complex intersections of empire, state power, and Jewish politics during a time marked by profound urgency and exigency. Before 1952, open heart surgery was considered science fiction. The heart was off limits to surgeons despite more than half a million Americans dying annually from heart disease. Doing nothing was the strategy. However, the status quo would soon change thanks to a few brave and imaginative surgeons who dared to break the most rigid of medical taboos: Do not touch the human heart. We sat down with Dr. Gerald Imber, author of the new book “Cardiac Cowboys: The Heroic Invention of Heart Surgery” to discuss how five men raced to invent an entirely new field of surgery. It's not fair, really. If you think about it…It's one thing to be immensely talented at one creative endeavor, but nowadays, everyone's an overachiever. This is another installment of Drinking About Design, a journey into the less explored aspects of design, art and architecture. This installment is a fun one, for a litany of reasons, and not just because we're drinking, but that doesn't hurt. Just to reset the table for you. In the summer of 2020, the pandemic was in full effect. We were all locked in and trying to figure out what was going to happen next. You remember, you were doing the exact same thing. So, besides the day drinking and looking up old friends on Facebook, I was trying to learn new ways to be socially engaged. One of things I did during that time was binge watch Drunk History, Dinner for Five and Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown and No Reservations. Ground breaking shows that I never could find the time to watch before. I became enamored with the skill by which Anthony Bourdain found a complete language revolving around found and association to society, how Jon Favreau could take 4 celebrities and craft a vibrant tableau out of each of the stories shared around a table. How Derek Waters told stories through the honest interpretations of historical events through the drunken lens of comics woven together as a tapestry featuring some of the funniest people working in Hollywood. Then all of a sudden, it was over. Things opened up all at once and we all got busy. Really busy. I've been missing some of those evenings at the virtual bar, My virtual bar is called, Big D Energy. Big Design Energy for my Hip Hop loving friends. I wouldn't want you to get the wrong idea. Now, this installment is a fun one and features, Michael Imber, Ankie Barnes, Steve Rugo, Tom Kligerman and Douglas C. Wright. 5 architects, friends with a passion for whisky and a love for painting in watercolor. Some are a bit better at it, I'm not going to say who…but they will. These five creatives are extremely accomplished in their chosen profession, they are extraordinarily talented artists, they are well traveled, and we talk about this and so much more. Old Fashioned Ingredients - AllRecipes.com These are the ingredients you'll need to make this top-rated old fashioned recipe: Simple syrup: Use store-bought simple syrup or make your own at home. Water: A teaspoon of water helps bring out the flavor of the bourbon. Bitters: Use store-bought bitters or make your own at home. Ice: Traditional old fashioned cocktails are served over ice. Bourbon: Of course, you'll need bourbon! You can use rye whiskey instead, if you like. Garnishes: Garnish your old fashioned with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry. Welcome to the Big D Energy, a virtual pub at the sketchy outskirts of the internet. We're talking about art, architecture, travel, and having fun with a few pops among friends. Cozy up to the bar, grab a drink and enjoy this conversation with the Whiskey Watercolor Club. Thanks for listening to this installment of Drinking About Design featuring the Whiskey Watercolor Club. Thank you, Tom, Ankie, Michael, Douglas and Steve for sharing your stories and incredible talents. Thank you for doing this. For notes, drink recipe's and further links to the stories and work you heard about here, check the show notes. Thanks for listening. Cheers.

Robbert has been off the punt for 18 years thanks to help from Gamblers Anonymous and talks about how he was introduced to gambling in his late teens and early twenties around Sydney's casinos and nightclubs. He talks about his first big win and how he ploughed it all back into the pokies, plus more the next day. Robbert's life deteriorated as he spent his weekly pay-packet on the pokies on payday and existed on loans from colleagues, friends and family till his next payday. After realizing the impact of his secretive gambling on his family he initially went to Gamblers Anonymous but only to keep his family off his back. Eventually Robbert couldn't keep up the lies and deception to hide his gambling and returned to GA wanting help to stop gambling.Robbert talks candidly about the need to be ready to stop gambling, about the fact that he will always be a compulsive gambler but how embracing the Gamblers Anonymous approach enabled him to better cope with life without gambling. If you're having trouble with gambling, or have a friend or family member that does, then maybe Gamblers Anonymous could help – phone (03) 9696 6108 or visit their website gaaustralia.org.au for information and to see a list of local meetings. If you are a partner, family member or friend of someone with a gambling problem you may find the help you need with a GAM-ANON group.
Despite living in Australia for his entire life, my dad speaks with a Polish accent. But that's not all that's different about him since he suffered a stroke in 2009… Martin Imber always considered himself a logical, “right-brained” person - he was a computer programmer, after all. But since his stroke, he believes he's become more empathetic, more compassionate. Martin shares what he's learned about life, love, family and himself since his stroke, as well as the lessons he learned from his own parents, who survived the holocaust. *** My new book Time Wise is out now. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings in Florida Panthers Public Address Announcer Andrew Imber(@Imbervoice) for a Vibe Check as he got to experience first hand the Florida Panthers punching their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final. We go deeper into the job of being a PA Announcer with celebrating a win while still having to be the "adult in the room" with telling fans not to throw things on the ice until the game is over. The Stanley Cup Final schedule is official and Andrew describes how antsy he is for the Panthers to return home for Game 3 so that he can be behind the microphone again. The guys discuss Matthew Tkachuk's appearance on "Inside The NBA" and how comical the interview was. Making the Stanley Cup final does more than just put the Panthers on the map, it gives room for more nationally televised games in the future and a possible Stadium Series game, the guys will discuss that further. The Panthers have announced that there will in fact be a watch party for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. The guys discuss their excitement for it and Andrew will provide what he could be involved in once Game 1 comes around on today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast: Your Team, Every Day.Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings back Public Address Announcer Andrew Imber(@Imbervoice) to discuss the balance of becoming a multi sport announcer. Some days, it requires doing multiple sporting events in one day, Andrew gives a perspective on how he's been able to balance all those gigs. One thing that is important to Andrew is fitness, and also discusses a bit of fitting that in along with how he's developed into a personal trainer. Then the guys get into some hockey talk, where we discuss where Andrew Imber was on the night of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. There's one preseason game under the Panthers belt, and with Andrew back behind the mic at FLA Live Arena, Armando asks him what would be his goal song with the Panthers going down the "individual song" approach this season.Twitter: @LO_FLAPanthersEmail: lockedonflapanthers@gmail.comSubscribe to Locked On Panthers for FREE on your favorite podcast platform!Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-panthers-daily-podcast-on-the-florida-panthers/id469193661Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/509xdSHc2QuXXAE4CQVQp4?si=VPbooMFYTdqKF4HbW8SV3A&nd=1Google: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9wYW50aGVycGFya3dheXJhZGlvLmJsb2dzcG90LmNvbS9mZWVkcy9wb3N0cy9kZWZhdWx0?sa=X&ved=0CBQQ27cFahcKEwiItMCm9MHvAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAQAudacy: https://www.audacy.com/podcast/locked-on-panthers-daily-podcast-on-the-florida-panthers-19287YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHsUfqcK1qfjlqhamXbta_QSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. This episode is brought to you by Ordergroove. Realea's line of skincare products began with the Aurora balm, a "super healer" that works on eczema, psoriasis, wound healing, scar tissue reduction, and other unexpected skin issues, says Nick Grossenbacher, co-founder and head of product at the brand. It was a problem pregnancy and difficult delivery that Nick's wife endured that inspired the balm's creation. "My wife had an emergency cesarean section, and I immediately went home and created a balm for her to use on her incision site," Nick explains. "And she was using it every day, and her wound healed very fast, faster than the doctors expected it to. And she also has virtually no C-section scar. And that to me was a major moment and kind of coming to the sense that I need to do this work." Growing the brand from that one balm, Realea wanted to create a link of skincare products that provided everything needed for skincare and the tissues deeper than the skin. To that end, Tenebris turned out to be the product for beneath the skin. Meridiem is the brand's whole body moisturizer. Imber is a face mist. Astrum is a liquid face oil. In Part 2, Nick talks about: * How his wife's pregnancy complications led to the formation of the Aurora balm. * An explanation of the uses of Aurora. * A rundown of the brand's other products. Join Ramon Vela and Nick Grossenbacher as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.
