Getting Familiar with the Fretboard #1: Chromatic Scale for the Flamenco Guitar

This is the first video tutorial in a series titled, "Fretboard Familiarity." In this tutorial, I will show you the chromatic scale; it's called that because fretting finger follows a chromatic path (i.e., C, C#, D, D#, E, F,F#,etc.). After completing this exercise, your fingers become more accustomed to the distance of the frets on the guitar--particularly when you adjust that distance by putting on a cejilla (capo). ...This exercise will also help your left hand endurance, left-hand finger agility, and right hand coordination between your index (i) and middle (m) fingers while alternating. ☎️Book a FREE Call w/ Me: https://bit.ly/2VgD0Df

Although most flamenco palos originated from the Southern portion of Spain in Andalusia, there are some exceptions. The palo (flamenco style) of Farruca is from in the northern region of Spain in Asturias, and was adapted into the flamenco repertoire by flamenco artists.  The Farruca can be a solo piece for the guitar, and can also be played for cante (singing) and baile (dancing). In this progressive study for the flamenco guitar, you will learn how to play the basic rhythm of the Farruca, along with some beautiful falsetas (riffs/licks).  I don't think I need to say that I hope you will enjoy this piece, because I know you'll love it.

What's this scale called? Well, I call it the “Escala de Gerardo” (Gerardo's Scale), because I always heard that it was written by Gerardo Núñez; it may or may not have been written by him, but I think it sounds like his style. Anyhow, follow this lesson along closely. Watch it as many times as you need in order to get this scale in your flamenco guitar toolbox PRONTO! In this lesson, I want to show you a very popular falseta for the compás of Soleares; it's a rather basic falseta—that is, “basic” to the extent that its a falseta that most flamenco guitar players learn when they are first learning Soleares; it's also basic in the sense that its a bit of a stock falseta, but the truth about this falseta is that it is a very good exercise for the thumb—including rapid movement and alzapua. …But, we are we are going to attempt to make this falseta sound less basic by adding some nuances like rasqueado just before the first beat. We'll also ad a accented golpe on the 3rd and 6th beast to really emphasize the rhythm. Enjoy!

(For an introduction to the most effective use of octaves, please watch these two videos: Octaves Video #1 Octaves Video #2 Towards the end of the section, you will repeat some rapid legado movements between fingers one and four while striking those--somewhat haunting--arabesque bass notes. I want you to pay particularly close attention to the aforementioned legado by holding tightly to the first fret before finally letting go to the open position, and make sure to use a metronome while you practice this section! I've taught you several falsetas for the rumba now (all at increasing levels of difficulty), but now you're going to enjoy a little break from all the fast picado you saw in the last lesson.  …And notice I said that it would be only a “little break.” Trust me. After the last falseta we went through, anything following that would rightfully be considered by most players to be a well deserved “break.”  You will be using octaves on the fourth and first strings for this falseta. Octaves are very easy to fret for two reasons. First, the fretting hand naturally forms to the octave shape. Second, no matter where you move your fretting hand, the fretting positions do not change! That's good news, right? As for the right hand, you will strike the fourth string with the thumb (p) while striking the first string with either the index (i) or the middle (m) finger. Remember to alternate between the index and middle each time you play these octaves, which is to say, play like this: p-i, p-m, p-i, p-m, etc.; and NOT like this: p-i, p-i, p-i, p-i, etc.  As always, remember to take it slow, paying close attention to what you are doing, which means you should be listening to what you are playing. In this video lesson for the flamenco guitar, one of our supporters, Yolanda, asks a really good question about the pulgar (thumb), and what to do with it when you are playing in E major.  Quite often, we tend to rest our thumb on the E string (sixth string) when playing falsetas and chords, but sometimes our thumb can get in the way when we need to strum the sixth string. So, in this lesson, I will show you exactly how to solve this problem!

The third and fourth fretting fingers will run through some relatively demanding legado (hammer-on) movements and some slides as well. Remember to keep your right hand stable so as to allow for maximum precision while executing the arpeggio. Enjoy!

Pedro Cortes is a master Flamenco guitar musician with roots in Spanish Gypsy traditions. He learned his craft from his family's close friend Flamenco legion -- 'Uncle' Sabicas. Mr Cortes performed professionally since he was 17 – all over the world – St. Louis Opera -- New York Grand Opera -- Guthrie Theatre’s production of Lorca’s "Blood Wedding" – and he had a regular gig at Alegerias – at the Spanish Benevolent Society -- until the pandemic hit. The artist was interviewed before his performance at a music salon arranged by Deirdre Towers in honor of her longtime companion who had recently died -- Jared Newman. Pedro played his own composition "Mineros" on Jared's guitar. NOTE: In the program notes photo - Pedro Cortes is playing the blanca guitar commissioned by Paul Jared Newman and made by Andrés Marvi in Ferreirola, Spain. The art of the flamenco guitar has expanded as a worldwide phenomenon because of each musician's willingness to share his or her knowledge. In other words, there is no room for covetousness of one's own knowledge of his or her falsetas, otherwise the global flamenco guitar community would be one of secrecy…but to the contrary, Flamenco culture involves the generous sharing of ideas, art, letras, falsetas, stories, etc.  In this episode, Ben discusses the topic of the “culture of sharing” in the real flamenco community in Andalucía vs. the culture of covetousness in the domestic flamenco community in the United States. Paul was also part of the incredible line up in Wild Marmalade at “Earth Beats” Onespace event at The Sydney Opera House. Paul shares how he has been playing guitar since he was 11 years old, and when he was a teen he would play it every night and fall asleep with his guitar, he always knew he wanted to be a musician. He shares many of the different jobs he held, and some of them may surprise you, but they all guided him back to the path he was set to take.. Paul grew up in the Gold Coast and met Carey O'Sullivan, while at school and their friendship took them onto the path of creating, learning, and co-producing music and they went on to perform live and then tour the world. It was so nice to learn about Paul's past and how he came to come to where he is today, doing what he loves and continuing to play music and learn and grow. “Tijuana Cartel serves up a tasty mix of world music and club beats. These Gold-Coast-based our addicts are renowned for their live shows and tight production.” triple j Unearthed How you can support Tijuana Cartel to continue doing what they love, and bringing us new music, especially during these unknown times, Donate to Patreon account, follow them on social media, join a live event. https://www.patreon.com/tijuanacartel

In this episode of the “Am I Crazy Or Am I Raving” Henry’s Child Podcast Tobby and Thom sit down to talk about everything music-related. They start with the story of how Tobby joined Henry’s Child: A recommendation from a friend (Bishop Freeman of band “Toxic Zombie”) and the reputation of the band were two big factors that contributed to Tobby saying “Yes!”. Tobby tells the story of how he moved from Myrtle Beach to Eugene, joining “Grynch” and eventually putting together “We Have Guns”. Tobby rekindles a story about how he created a website for the Eugene studio Central Node and got offered a job in Portland, where he eventually moved to a few years ago. We play the songs “Toy Soldier” from “Grynch” and “Dead Rising” from “We Have Guns”. Tobby discussed the amount of instruments he plays, including a degree in Flamenco Guitar, and why he is passionate about drums. We talk about the momentum that swung him into taking the gig with Henry’s Child. This includes what it took to honor the original recordings, when playing them for live shows, and ultimately how that affected his playing on the new album. Tobby talks about what it took to keep the sound as close to Henry’s Child as possible, while putting his own spin on it at the same time.   We end this episode with Tobby mentioning an important upcoming gig on 3/23/18 in Lebanon. It’s a benefit for Jason Rowe (from “Strange Dichotomy” and “30 Pound Test”), who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The benefit is two nights, with 10 bands each night.   Official Website http://henryschild.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo31Ezkv6jKZBkdgpJSKH4A Bandcamp: https://henryschild.bandcamp.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/henryschild1/ Twitter https://twitter.com/henrys_child

Like so many American flamenco guitarists, Juanito Pascual's guitar journey began with a heavy dose of the electric guitar greats like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, progressed to jazz, and was inevitably drawn to flamenco. With his upcoming release, Juanito Pascual New Flamenco Trio, he comes full circle to by bringing all those influences together. Today on the All Strings Considered, Juanito talks about his progression through various styles, about being an American taking part in the flamenco tradition, which so often means comparing oneself to players who have been immersed in that complex tradition since birth. He also discusses his struggles with chronic hand problems, his new method book, and you'll get to hear an exclusive pre-release track from New Flamenco Trio, which will be released this February.

The December show was stellar with standing room only and a crackling energy in Rafa's Lounge! Aaron Gilmartin started the night off with original songs on Flamenco Guitar and continued to accompany the letters with Flamenco, banjo and ukulele.Marlene Nichols read a saucy letter from her 80 year old self to her present day self with advice we can all take to heart.Lisa Waugh and Chris Sheets transported us to Alabama and the hardships endured by her Uncle Lee who grew up poor amidst fifteen siblings. A theatrical first at To Whom It May Concern as Chris played the part of Uncle Lee and spun a tale of drinking, fighting, thieving and redemption.Drew Droege improvised a letter based on the audience suggestion of a scarlet letter. As usual he was loose, witty and hilarious.Margot Leitman proved why she is a five time Moth winner with letters of a high school crush gone horribly wrong. To Whom It May Concern's producer, Jayne Entwistle, read a letter to none other than Santa Claus or, as is more accurate for her British upbringing, Father Christmas.

Grisha speaks about his quest to enrich the classical guitar canon by the addition and performance of works by the great composers of the solo flamenco guitar, like Sabicas, Paco de Lucía, Rafael Riqueni, Gerardo Nuñez, Manolo Sanlucar, and others. It's truly inspiring to hear about the role his father had in Grisha's musical training; his search for flamenco repertoire when sheet music was a sought-after commodity in Russia at the time, his patience, his support and dedication. You'll also hear about Grisha's chance to play for Paco de Lucía and Grisha's recordings of two works by Sabicas and two more by Paco de Lucía.

Adam and I chatted about his new and second guitar concerto titled, Paisajes (Landscapes), about growing up in Spain (and everywhere else!), about the flamenco/classical guitar split, and Segovia's flamenco past. You'll hear the first movement of Paisajes (Lanscapes), which is an orchestral version of a flamenco Alegrías, the rumba that begins his latest album, his amazing interpretation of Albeñiz's Sevilla, and a great Balkan-sounding tune in 13/8!
