29% Equal in conversation with Part W, Episode 05: Parlour & Zoë Berman. Hosted & produced by Sarah Ackland-In this episode, Zoë Berman, Founder and Co-Director of Part W Collective and the Founding Director of Studio Berman, speaks with the groundbreaking Justine Clark and Naomi Stead the President and Vice-President of the Australian-based Parlour. Parlour is a group whose name derives from a rather subversive feminist take on the 'parlour' as the room in a house traditionally used for receiving and conversing with visitors. In this episode, they discuss with how the organisation grew from a research project and worked tirelessly to prove that women's inability to stay in the profession was not their fault. We discuss how campaign groups can work together and reflect on Parlour's impressive journey. From hanging out and data collection to the creation of the ‘parlour guides' a must-read for all those hoping to support diversity; these women have paved the way for change for women in architecture.-This podcast has been created with thanks to the RIBA Research Fund and supported by Katie Lloyd Thomas of Newcastle University.-If you would like to support the valuable work of Part W please do via the link here or through their website.-Photocredits: Agatha A. Bridget Nathan started The Doyenne Interviews project 3 years ago and launched the podcast 7 months ago on a women in architecture platform called Parlour founded by the amazing Justine Clark. She talks about how the podcast project, her experience as a young architect and outlook on life as a woman in society today is somewhat influenced by the #MeToo movement. Bridget brings in her journal to share some notes from a yoga retreat in Rishikesh in North of India that she attended a few years ago. Bridget also discusses the idea of taking leaps in life which is inspired by a book she brought in called The Leap Stories by Kylie Lewis. Justine is a certified health coach, certified group fitness instructor, and master of habit change. Most of her life she had struggled with anxiety, depression, and fatigue. She was quickly thrown into the autoimmune world with a suspicious thyroid nodule. After multiple tests and biopsies, surgery left her with only half of her thyroid. It wasn't until her doctor refused to prescribe medication due to her blood tests being normal that she began seeking alternative holistic methods of healing. She now leads other women on their healing journey by educating them on how to heal from the inside out in a fun, easy, and sustainable way. After contemplating the defining nature of our urban landscapes it’s time to consider the role of personal transformation. Transformation design is a human-centred, interdisciplinary process that seeks to change the behaviour and form of individuals, systems and organisations in desirable and sustainable ways—often for socially progressive ends. The Transformation leg of MRelay explores how we can apply transformation design skills in non-traditional settings, which often leads to new and original design outcomes. Transformation designers aren’t always ‘designers’—can each of us play a role as moderator, participant or co-creator? Transformation was hosted by Rose Hiscock, director of Science Gallery Melbourne. Speakers included Ramona Koval, broadcaster, writer and editor; Professor Rob Adams, director of City Design and Projects at the City of Melbourne; Mary Portas, founder of creative communications agency Portas Agency; Simone LeAmon, Hugh Williamson curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture at the National Gallery of Victoria; Cameron Bruhn, editor at Architecture Media; Oluwaseyi Sosanya, designer, engineer and inventor of the 3D Weaver; and Justine Clark, architectural editor, writer and researcher, and founding editor of Parlour.
Hear a discussion about the history of women shaping the Australian city—its buildings, spaces, and social and political agendas. Led by Parlour, an advocacy organisation dedicated to expanding the spaces for women in Australian architecture, the evening’s panellists—architectural historian Dr Karen Burns, editor and researcher Justine Clark, social historian Renate Howe, urbanist Jane Jose and architect Shelley Penn—explored the powerful roles women have played as activists, architects, planners, philanthropists, policy makers, politicians and writers. Roles which have indelibly shaped the spaces, places and policies of the Australian city and, by extension, formed what it means to live in Australia today. This event is presented by Triple R.
