High-functioning anxiety isn't a personality type. It's a stress response that's gone unchecked. You look calm. You hit your deadlines. You say "I'm fine." But inside, your body is paying a tax that's quietly editing your gene expression while everyone applauds your output. In this episode of The Dr. Leaf Show, Dr. Caroline Leaf breaks down what high-functioning anxiety actually is, what your non-conscious mind has been trying to tell you, and a 4-step framework to start listening. Plus: why your dog's separation anxiety mirrors your own anticipatory anxiety, and a Pick My Brain segment where Dr. Leaf answers your hardest questions about death, grief, and death anxiety. What you'll learn: - Why high-functioning anxiety is built on the "I'm fine" response — and how 40+ years of repressive coping research shows what it does to your heart rate, gene expression, and immune system - The 4 signals your non-conscious mind is sending: emotional, behavioral, body, and perspective — and how to translate each one - The 4-step framework for listening to your non-conscious mind instead of overriding it - Why your dog's pre-departure panic, the suitcase meltdown, the excessive licking — all mirror the same FAS (Fear, Anxiety, Stress) response humans experience - Pattern disruption techniques that rewire your dog's anticipatory anxiety in 6-9 weeks - The neuroscience of grief: why feeling nothing after a death is protective, not broken - Why anticipatory grief makes you grieve twice — and what's happening in the nucleus accumbens during prolonged grief - What near-death experience research suggests about pain at the moment of death Resources: Dr. Leaf's Website: https://drleaf.com Neurocycle Certification: https://drleaf.com (training opens September) 1:1 Coaching with Dr. Leaf: https://drleaf.com/coaching-1-1 Neurocycle App: https://theswitch.app Subscribe so you don't miss the next one — new episodes every Wednesday. Scouting for Girls frontman Roy Stride achieved global fame and number-one albums, but behind the scenes, he was wearing a mask. For 25 years, he used alcohol to bridge the gap between his public persona and a deep-seated feeling of never being "enough," eventually spiraling into a high-functioning nightmare of secret drinking and pre-show panic attacks. In this episode, Roy pulls back the curtain on the exhaustion of the "secret life." He reveals the extreme lengths he went to hide his addiction, from filling non-alcoholic cans with real beer to drinking 30 units a day while on tour. Roy also discusses the moment his dream became a prison, his initial skepticism of recovery, and how leaning into the "weirdness" of AA saved his marriage, his career, and his life. This is a powerful exploration of why life in recovery is infinitely better than the "belonging" found in a bottle. This episode covers the following themes: Addiction, High-Functioning Anxiety, Recovery, and Finding Belonging.'Scouting for Girls' new album These Are The Good Days' is out nowNeed Support?Samaritans: Call 116 123 or visit samaritans.orgNarcotics Anonymous: na.orgAlcoholics Anonymous: alcoholics-anonymous.org.ukMental Health Mates: mentalhealthmates.co.ukShout: https: giveusashout.orgIAPT: https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/adults/nhs-talking-therapies/Heights

#217 Dr. Russell Kennedy on Anxiety as a Body Alarm: Childhood Patterns, Worry, Somatic Healing

Dr. Mike Hart interviews Dr. Russell Kennedy about chronic anxiety as a childhood safety adaptation that never turns off, driven more by a body-based "alarm" than by thinking. Kennedy explains why understanding anxiety and talk-based cognitive approaches often have limited effect because subcortical systems communicate through feeling; alarm sensations trigger the mind to generate worries, which can become dopamine-reinforced and addictive. He discusses sensitivity (often cited as 15–20% of the population), modern stressors like smartphones and social media reducing discomfort tolerance, and high-functioning anxiety in high achievers and physicians, with sleep as a key regulation marker. Kennedy emphasizes reconnecting mind and body and adult self with younger self using somatic techniques (body scanning, hand placement, "sensation without explanation," and the SHOULD acronym), notes trauma can occur without an overtly traumatic life, links dysregulated autonomic states to varied symptoms, and shares rapid tools like the physiological sigh and alternate nostril breathing, plus his "Sanity" app and AnxietyMD resources. Dr. Russell Kennedy is a physician, author, and anxiety expert whose work explores the deeper roots of chronic anxiety, especially the role of childhood stress, nervous system dysregulation, and the body's stored alarm response. In this episode, he explains why anxiety is not just a thinking problem but a feeling problem, how worry becomes a coping pattern that keeps people stuck, why high performers often live in a state of hidden dysregulation, and how self-connection, somatic awareness, and better sleep can help break the cycle. Through a blend of clinical experience, neuroscience, and personal insight, Kennedy helps listeners better understand where anxiety comes from and what it actually takes to heal it at the root.   Official site: https://www.dr-russ.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theanxietymd/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrRussellKennedyTHEANXIETYMD   Therapies Mentioned Internal Family Systems (IFS): https://ifs-institute.com/ Somatic Experiencing / somatic therapy: https://traumahealing.org/ Physiological sigh: https://www.hubermanlab.com/newsletter/breathwork-protocols-for-health-focus-stress Alternate nostril breathing: https://www.health.harvard.edu/healthy-aging-and-longevity/alternate-nostril-breath   Pain / Neuroplasticity Resources Alan Gordon / Pain Psychology Center: https://painpsychologycenter.com/our-team Pain Reprocessing Therapy: https://www.painreprocessingtherapy.com/   Experts Mentioned David Goggins: https://davidgoggins.com/ Joseph LeDoux: https://www.joseph-ledoux.com/ Dr. Ethan Russo: https://ethanrusso.org/ Clinical endocannabinoid deficiency paper (PubMed): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15159679/   Show Notes 00:00 Welcome to the Hart2Heart Podcast 01:19 Anxiety Starts in the Body 03:17 Sensitivity and Modern Stress 05:58 The Dopamine Worry Loop 08:08 Self Connection Over Self Punishment 09:09 High Functioning Anxiety and Burnout 12:41 Redefining Success Internally 17:19 Discipline vs Dysregulation 21:46 Mind Body Child Separation 27:10 Finding the Alarm Sensation 29:16 Somatic Steps to Soothe Alarm 33:18 Why We Should Say Alarm 35:07 Medicine Limits and SSRIs 35:36 Medicine Misses Root Causes 36:57 Trauma Behind Weird Symptoms 38:58 Fibro IBS and Nervous System 42:31 Forgiveness and Doctor Burnout 50:51 Biohacking Anxiety Spiral 56:56 Somatic Healing and Spirit 01:02:50 Psychedelics Need Foundation 01:03:39 Physiological Sigh Tools 01:06:24 App Plug and Farewell   The Hart2Heart podcast is hosted by family physician Dr. Michael Hart, who is dedicated to cutting through the noise and uncovering the most effective strategies for optimizing health, longevity, and peak performance. In this episode, Kamini Wood explores the concept of high-functioning anxiety, which she describes as an internal struggle often hidden behind a facade of success and productivity. While not a formal DSM-5 diagnosis, it's a recognized experience among high achievers characterized by persistent worry and a fear of failure, despite outward appearances of being composed and successful. Kamini explains that this anxiety is often rooted in societal pressures that tie self-worth to accomplishments, leading individuals to mask their struggles for fear of appearing weak. She introduces Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a powerful framework to help anxious achievers by focusing on accepting anxiety, clarifying core values, and taking purposeful action.Discover more powerful tips and guidance here: https://www.kaminiwood.com/blog/Learn more about my coaching services: https://www.kaminiwood.com/services/Follow me for more empowering inspiration and guidance:https://www.instagram.com/itsauthenticme/https://www.facebook.com/itsauthenticme/https://www.pinterest.com/itsauthenticme/

This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, takes a candid look at the hidden mental health battles many first responders fight (Amazon Affiliate) while appearing perfectly fine on the outside. The discipline, structure, and professionalism that make them effective in the field often double as masks—concealing anxiety, depression, trauma, or burnout from colleagues, family, and even themselves. Defining “High-Functioning” Struggles: How success and competence can hide serious internal distress. The difference between coping and truly healing. Why First Responders Mask Symptoms: Cultural pressure to appear unshakable. Fear of stigma, career repercussions, or losing trust. The Role of Routine in Concealment: How structure and discipline can maintain outward stability. Why routines can become a crutch instead of a lifeline. The Cumulative Toll of Silent Struggles: The long-term health risks of untreated anxiety, depression, or trauma. The emotional cost on family relationships and personal well-being. The Danger of Self-Deception: How “I'm fine” becomes a habit, even to oneself. Why high-functioning doesn't mean healthy functioning. Strategies to Recognize and Address the Issue: Normalize Conversations Around Mental Health: Peer leaders and supervisors openly sharing their own experiences. Look for Micro-Signs in Yourself and Others: Changes in sleep, irritability, withdrawal, or overworking. Encourage Early Check-Ins, Not Crisis Interventions: Making mental health maintenance as routine as physical training. Use Trusted, Confidential Resources: Peer support, vetted therapists, or off-the-record consultations. Reframe Help-Seeking as Tactical Strength: Position mental wellness as part of operational readiness. This episode is a reminder that a polished uniform and a strong performance in the field don't always mean someone is okay—and that the bravest thing a responder can do might be to take off the mask.

It's not classified as a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5, but it encapsulates the experience of individuals who appear to lead fulfilling lives while grappling with persistent anxiety beneath the surface. Drawing inspiration from a recent article that struck a chord with me, I explore the characteristics and behaviors associated with high-functioning anxiety. As I unpack this topic, I encourage listeners to reflect on their own experiences and recognize that high-functioning anxiety can manifest in a multitude of ways. It's common for individuals in this position to feel an internal struggle that contrasts sharply with their outward success. While you may be praised for being organized, punctual, and dependable—traits often associated with a type A personality—there may be a constant undercurrent of anxiety that propels you rather than immobilizes you. I urge you to assess how you truly feel inside, separate from the perceptions others may have of you. Throughout our discussion, I highlight both the positive and negative characteristics associated with high-functioning anxiety. On one hand, the traits can foster a reputation of success and reliability, where outwardly you appear to have it all together. Yet, on the other hand, these very traits may be symptoms of anxiety, driven by fears of inadequacy or the desire to please others. I outline how these conflicting realities can lead to perfectionist tendencies, where success becomes a double-edged sword, offering validation on one hand while masking a deeper sense of unease on the other. #HighFunctioningAnxiety #AnxietyDisorders #MentalHealthAwareness #EmotionalRegulation #StressManagement #Perfectionism #PeoplePleasing #AvoidanceBehaviors #InnerCritic #SelfDoubt #Masking #EmotionalSuppression #Burnout #ImposterSyndrome #SelfCare #Therapy #Mindfulness #GinaRyan #ACP #AnxietyCoachesPodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Diagnosis Creep

You may have noticed that there's an upswing in people identifying with mental health diagnoses lately. Here's my take on this, I think there are 4 reasons. The first is what I'm going to call Diagnosis Creep. People are using clinical terms much more broadly than was intended in the past. You'll see this when people say “I'm so OCD” or “I'm so ADD”. Or when you watch a video that talks about “High Functioning Depression” or “High Functioning Anxiety”. But, for a clinical diagnosis, with PTSD, Depression or Anxiety, the diagnostic requirements say “The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in… functioning.” Many people can experience traits of these diagnostic labels, but often not meet formal criteria for them when professionally evaluated. In the past terms like Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, and Trauma were used to describe a small percent of the population- maybe less than 5%, and it included the most severe forms that impaired functioning. But now people are casually using them to describe a much broader segment, maybe 30+% of people. Looking for affordable online counseling? We feel tired, but wired.  Our body is telling us to slow down, but our brain is convincing us we can push harder.  I've been there, and I know how exhausting it is to live with anxiety. In today's episode, we explore 3 of the most common roots of high-functioning anxiety, and I coach you through ways you can start the healing process and help your body move out of an anxious state and return to regulation.JOIN THE WAITLIST FOR THE FALL COHORT OF RESTOREMy Burnout Recovery Story + Save $10 on Happy JuiceTAKE THE PERSONALITY PATTERN QUIZ!APPLY FOR 1:1 COACHING WITH MICHELLEFB COMMUNITY: The Calm Mom CollectiveJOIN ME ON INSTAGRAM: @michellegrosser.coach“I love The Calm Mom Podcast!” ← if that sounds like you, please consider rating and reviewing our show!  This helps us support more women, just like you, on their motherhood journey.  Click here, scroll to the bottom, tap to rate with five stars, and select “Write a Review.”  Then be sure to let me know what you loved most about the episode.
