It's not classified as a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5, but it encapsulates the experience of individuals who appear to lead fulfilling lives while grappling with persistent anxiety beneath the surface. Drawing inspiration from a recent article that struck a chord with me, I explore the characteristics and behaviors associated with high-functioning anxiety. As I unpack this topic, I encourage listeners to reflect on their own experiences and recognize that high-functioning anxiety can manifest in a multitude of ways. It's common for individuals in this position to feel an internal struggle that contrasts sharply with their outward success. While you may be praised for being organized, punctual, and dependable—traits often associated with a type A personality—there may be a constant undercurrent of anxiety that propels you rather than immobilizes you. I urge you to assess how you truly feel inside, separate from the perceptions others may have of you. Throughout our discussion, I highlight both the positive and negative characteristics associated with high-functioning anxiety. On one hand, the traits can foster a reputation of success and reliability, where outwardly you appear to have it all together. Yet, on the other hand, these very traits may be symptoms of anxiety, driven by fears of inadequacy or the desire to please others. I outline how these conflicting realities can lead to perfectionist tendencies, where success becomes a double-edged sword, offering validation on one hand while masking a deeper sense of unease on the other. #HighFunctioningAnxiety #AnxietyDisorders #MentalHealthAwareness #EmotionalRegulation #StressManagement #Perfectionism #PeoplePleasing #AvoidanceBehaviors #InnerCritic #SelfDoubt #Masking #EmotionalSuppression #Burnout #ImposterSyndrome #SelfCare #Therapy #Mindfulness #GinaRyan #ACP #AnxietyCoachesPodcast Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Andrea Anderson shares some amazing insights into the thing we don't talk about much in Christian business, anxiety. But I am not talking about a nervousness, I am talking about a high functioning anxiety. Are you often busy, moving, doing, planning and strategizing? Do you struggle to rest, make time, or even feel peace at being at rest? We often chalk this up to being creatives, energetic people, we have minds that never stop, sometimes not even long enough to let us sleep much. Well, that is what high functioning anxiety is. This episode is eye opening and you might be suprised to find that what you consider creativity, is actually not. It's not to say you aren't creative, but that something other than creativity is driving you. Learn how high functioning anxiety might be showing up in your life and you didn't even know what it was or how to deal with it. You may have noticed that there's an upswing in people identifying with mental health diagnoses lately. Here's my take on this, I think there are 4 reasons. The first is what I'm going to call Diagnosis Creep. People are using clinical terms much more broadly than was intended in the past. You'll see this when people say “I'm so OCD” or “I'm so ADD”. Or when you watch a video that talks about “High Functioning Depression” or “High Functioning Anxiety”. But, for a clinical diagnosis, with PTSD, Depression or Anxiety, the diagnostic requirements say “The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in… functioning.” Many people can experience traits of these diagnostic labels, but often not meet formal criteria for them when professionally evaluated. In the past terms like Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, and Trauma were used to describe a small percent of the population- maybe less than 5%, and it included the most severe forms that impaired functioning. But now people are casually using them to describe a much broader segment, maybe 30+% of people. Looking for affordable online counseling? Overthinking, busyness, and the inability to be present with loved ones are common struggles for individuals with high functioning anxiety. Working with the subconscious and super conscious mind is essential for true change and liberation from the ego-driven patterns of high functioning anxiety. Recognising one's perfection in the present moment and letting go of the belief of being broken is crucial for breaking free from the cycle of self-improvement. Creating a life from a place of joy, inspiration, and pure fun, rather than seeking external validation or moving away from pain, leads to true wealth and fulfilment in all areas of life. BEST MOMENTS "I was being driven by pain. Not feeling good enough, not feeling worthy, not feeling significant. I wanted to be liked, I wanted to be loved." "But often we're constantly trying to change it from the ego, funnily enough, constantly trying to change it, constantly trying to modify it, constantly trying to be better and then feeling guilty and ashamed because we failed yet again." "And I can promise you that there is nothing wrong with you. In fact, I had a conversation with someone in my community today telling me that they have a problem with recognising that they're perfect right now." "It's fake and it's damaging and it's damaging to your mind, it's damaging to your body and it's damaging to your wealth of all areas because you can lose it all if you're struggling to think clearly or if you're struggling with your health." Here are some signs and symptoms to watch out for in yourself and others: High-Functioning Anxiety and Depression Individuals with high-functioning anxiety or depression often appear successful, productive, and composed. Perfectionism Striving for perfection often stems from deep-seated fears of inadequacy or failure. It can lead to immense stress and mental health challenges. Overcompensation Overly optimistic or excessively cheerful behavior can be a sign of overcompensation. People-Pleasing People-pleasers go to great lengths to be agreeable and friendly, often at the expense of their own well-being. Substance Abuse Substance abuse, whether through social drinking or recreational drugs, can be a way to dull pain and avoid dealing with issues. Workaholism In our society, workaholism is often seen as a badge of honor. However, excessive work can harm our mental health. ------------------------------------------- MannaMental Addiction and Recovery Clinic.. 201 Elm st Lima Ohio, 45805419-673-7754 We treat Mental Health Addiction and Recovery We are family oriented. Hello hello you gorgeous human! I am really looking forward to introducing you to my new friend and fellow Hay house author. Dr Lalitaa Suglani is in the house with me today and we have A LOT to cover! Her book, High Functioning Anxiety explains so many behaviours that will be familiar to you - even if you don't identify as someone who has any form of anxiety. We chat on expectations, self trust, loneliness and more. Get comfy and enjoy.Quotes"The root of of high functioning anxiety, is you not feeling enough.""You have to turn away from doing what everybody else wants you to do in order to stand out.""We can't move forwards until we understand the past and start connecting all the dots to understand why is it that I present in the way that I do now.""We trust ourselves to get it done."Highlights 14.04 And that's what my book's all about, is, like, the root of it, of high functioning anxiety, is you not feeling enough. And when you're not feeling enough, it's because we're disconnected from our intuition, we're disconnected from self trust. And that's what we want to go back into, is come back to trusting yourself.20.47 We feel dysregulated, and we want to do something because we're in that state, fight or flight, and it's like, I need to just get rid of this. But we also need to understand and tune into the body and make sense of what is actually going on, to then find a way to respond rather than be reactive in that space.28.13 Sensitivity is seen as a weakness. If someone is saying, oh, that's really upset me, or that's really hurt my. It's like, oh, you're taking up space. You're creating a scene, you're making a bigger deal than it needs to be, and then you're perceived as being, like, the one who's, like, the interrupter or the one who isn't good enough or the one that's a troublemaker. So you don't want that negative association. So you just keep showing up as got it together. I'm okay. I'm hardworking. I'm all of these things because that's what we know how to, and it keeps us safe.Connect with Dr Lalitaa Suglani on Instagram.Visit Dr Lalitaa Suglani's website.Want to get my Sunday Times Bestselling book for free? Mental health stereotypes can often show the experience in just one way, debilitating, unable to get out of bed or function. Although this can be the case for some, there are many of us battling our minds while living a fully-functioning life. In this episode, Niall is joined by Dr. Lalitaa Suglani, a psychologist and author of ‘High-Functioning Anxiety'. Lalitaa coined the term after experiencing this herself, along with seeing her patients appear accomplished and successful on the outside, while dealing with something entirely different on the inside. Niall and Lalitaa discuss how anxiety can sometimes be confused with high-achieving, and how it can lead to a life caught on the hamster wheel of success. Lalitaa shares the two sides to high-functioning anxiety and the damage that ‘masking' can have on our wellbeing, as well as some practices to help you navigate your way around anxious thoughts.
