This episode is part of Body Relationship Month — our special July series revisiting some of our most-loved episodes to help you heal your relationship with your body. One of the most common questions we hear is: Can I want to lose weight and still heal my relationship with food and my body? It's a nuanced and deeply personal question — one that many women in midlife wrestle with after years (or decades) of dieting, body shame, and conflicting messages about health. If you're trying to balance weight loss goals with a genuine desire for body acceptance and food freedom, this episode is for you. In this episode — “Can Weight Loss and Healing Your Relationships with Food and Body Coexist?” — you'll learn:
Whenever someone asks me how they're supposed to ditch dieting if they have high cholesterol, I love opening their eyes with the wide array of strategies that can help lower their numbers - without cutting out things like butter or eggs, and meticulously logging everything in MyFitnessPal. In this episode, I'm taking you behind-the-scenes on how I discovered I have high cholesterol at 22 years old, and the multitude of things I've done to manage it (some strategies more effective than others). I share the things that help, the things that were too extreme, and what I'm currently experimenting with to support my cholesterol levels like supplements, certain foods, and a new type of movement I've added in recently. This is partially a personal story, and partially a lesson in how to leverage gentle nutrition and lifestyle (rather than restriction and dieting) to directly address high cholesterol. I'm not holding back - I am also sharing the immediate thoughts and feelings that went through my head whenever I'd get my labs back, and how I think completely differently now. If you've ever worried that intuitive eating might be bad for your health, or that you “have to” restrict your food because of your bloodwork, this episode is for you! Episode Highlights What I could have done…and why I didn't How I'm actually navigating my high cholesterol now (vs what I used to do) The mindset work that has moved me from shame and fear >> to calm and empowered What I want YOU to know about managing your health Today's Wellness Woo is wellness shots. If you're eating clean, working out, and still not losing weight… your gut might be the missing piece. In today's episode, I'm breaking down 10 reasons why gut health directly impacts your metabolism, hormones, and ability to lose fat and why testing with a GI MAP could be the game-changer you've been missing. We'll talk about how certain gut infections like H. pylori or parasites keep your body in survival mode, signaling it to hold on to fat. You'll learn how your gut bacteria influence your cravings, blood sugar, and even your metabolism through short-chain fatty acids like butyrate. I'll explain why hidden gut inflammation can block fat loss and how slow digestion (aka not pooping daily) recirculates estrogen and toxins, stalling your progress. We'll also dive into how bad bacteria can steal essential nutrients you need for fat-burning, how gut health affects your thyroid function, and why your gut impacts not just your body, but your brain chemistry and motivation too. Plus, I'll explain why detoxing estrogen properly is key to shedding stubborn fat and how even the “perfect” diet won't work if your gut can't break down food and eliminate waste. This episode will help you see why your gut is the foundation of sustainable weight loss and why it's not just about willpower or cutting calories. If you're feeling stuck, testing your gut might be the missing link to get your body working with you again. This episode is part of Body Relationship Month — our special July series revisiting some of the most-loved episodes to help you heal your relationship with your body. If you want more self-worth or confidence, you have to give it to yourself. Stop making it contingent on a smaller body. The more we tie our self-worth to our body, the more uncomfortable we feel in our own skin. Instead of using food and exercise to meet our needs and help us feel our best, we end up using them as tools to control our body and our value. Any unwanted number on the scale can trigger a collapse in self-worth. To solve this, you have to separate your body from your body image — and start working on the latter. In this episode — “How to Handle Being Uncomfortable in Your Own Skin” — you'll learn:

If your body feels like it's stuck in stress mode no matter how “healthy” you try to be, your mindset might be the missing piece. In this episode, we're breaking down four common mental blocks that keep your hormones out of balance… and simple mindset shifts that can help you finally feel more at home in your body. We'll talk about how perfectionist thinking can actually keep your nervous system on edge and how focusing on small daily habits (à la James Clear's 1-degree plane shift) can create long-term change without burnout.Next up: guilt and shame. I'll share the stonecutter analogy that helps you swap shame for pride and consistency. We'll also explore how body frustration can morph into powerful gratitude when you zoom out including a powerful reframe I picked up from Alex Hormozi. And if you've ever felt like a single slip-up ruins your progress, you'll love the final mindset swap: learning to see those moments as tune-ups, not setbacks. Something I've had to lean into recently myself. These mindset upgrades aren't just motivational fluff. They lower stress, regulate your nervous system, and support better hormone balance over time.Whether you're deep in your healing journey or just getting started, these small mental shifts can make a big physical difference! This episode is part of Body Relationship Month — our special July series where we're revisiting some of our most-loved episodes to help you heal your relationship with your body. Many of us struggle to overcome society's message that you need to look a certain way to be valued. Adopting these messages (willingly or not) often creates debilitating battles with how we see our bodies. This negative body relationship can permeate nearly every aspect of life and diminish our entire experience. We end up living day after day with someone (ourselves) we don't accept, love, or appreciate unconditionally. And well… that sucks. But there are steps you can take to embrace your imperfections, accept yourself as-is, and still pursue your health and fitness goals. The result? Peace, freedom, and finally escaping a lifetime sentence in your food and body prison. In this episode — “Embracing Imperfection: How to Love Your Body at Every Stage” — you'll learn:

When it comes to your fitness routine, what are you training for? If you're like most of us, not a marathon or a bodybuilding competition. Trim Healthy Podcast w/Serene & Pearl (and some guy named Danny)
Heather found herself 60 pounds heavier and stuck in a cycle of sugar addiction. After three pregnancies and the emotional and physical rollercoaster that came with them… her breakthrough finally came after baby number three. This time, she approached THM with intention—studying the principles, taking them seriously, and embracing the truth behind them. The result? Rapid (but sustainable) fat-loss and a total shift in how she viewed her body. Heather discovered that control isn't a dirty word—it's freedom. By learning how to fuel her body with health, she broke free from stress and anxiety around food. Now, she moves forward with confidence. While she doesn't always stick to THM recipes (her husband handles most of the cooking), she still anchors every meal in protein. And she dialed in the details of the THM Plan to guide her family's nutrition. Check Out some of the Tools that Helped Her Below! In today's episode, we're talking all about meal plans – how, when, and why to use them in eating disorder recovery. Meal plans can be a helpful tool, but they can also bring up a lot of anxiety and resistance, so I want to break down how to approach them in a way that feels supportive, not restrictive. I'll share when using a meal plan might be a good idea and how to stay flexible with food without feeling trapped by numbers or rules. Here's what we'll cover:Why meal plans can be useful in early recovery to create structure and consistency. How to use meal plans without letting them control you or trigger old habits. When to move away from a structured meal plan and listen more to your body.Meal plans aren't one-size-fits-all, and in recovery, they're just a tool to help you along the way. I've been getting a lot of questions lately as our following and show has grown such as: “What actually is a functional health approach to weight loss?” “Are labs like the GI Map or DUTCH test worth it?” “What do I even do with the results?” If you've ever thought, “I eat clean. I work out. I track my food. And yet… nothing's changing,” this episode is for you. In today's conversation, I open up about what I've learned after years of doing everything “right” and still feeling inflamed, exhausted, and stuck in a body that felt like it was working against me. We'll unpack the real reasons your body may be resisting fat loss, healing, and energy. To all the ill-informed men in my comments: It's not just discipline or willpower or eating less and moving more. You'll learn why functional testing can reveal what basic labs miss, and how systems like your gut, thyroid, liver, and adrenals all communicate in a connected “group chat”, where one disruption creates a cascade. I'll share the exact myths I had to break about weight loss, hormones, and healing and the turning point that finally helped me get real answers. This episode is about reconnecting with your body, learning to read its signals, and understanding that your symptoms aren't random, they're messages. You'll walk away with clarity, compassion for yourself, and hope that yes, this is fixable. If your body feels broken… this is the permission slip and path forward you've been waiting for. You love the gym and it's been your sanctuary away from your stress for years. But what if your go-to stress relief tool is now part of the problem? In today's episode, we dive deep into why intense workouts might be silently burning you out rather than building you up. If you've been feeling exhausted, foggy, or stuck despite training hard, this one's for you. We explore why cardio and high-intensity workouts only offer temporary relief from mental stress and how they can actually strain your nervous system when your cortisol is already tapped out. I'll share what's really going on when your “post-workout high” feels amazing in the moment but leaves you drained long-term. More importantly, you'll learn five powerful, science-backed stress management tools that rebuild your system instead of depleting it. From daily walks to somatic resets and nervous system journaling, this episode is all about redefining strength. Because true power isn't in pushing harder: it's in knowing when to rest. Have you ever thought the only thing standing between you and your ideal weight is more discipline, more motivation, or a love for the gym you just don't have? Do you catch yourself thinking, “If I could just stick to the plan…” but never actually do? Maybe you've convinced yourself that willpower is the missing piece. But what if the real problem isn't your lack of discipline—but the beliefs running the show behind the scenes? Because here's the truth: smart, capable people still struggle with food. You know what to eat, you've read the books, maybe even tried the food addict label on for size—and still feel stuck. You want to feel in control, but old habits, emotional triggers, and inner chaos keep pulling you back into the same cycle. And the worst part? You're doing everything “right” and still not getting the peace you crave. That's where Leslie comes in and her proven method. In this episode, she breaks down why your brain's wiring — not your willpower – is the real reason you haven't found food freedom yet. You'll hear how letting go of restriction and building emotional safety can transform your relationship with food — and with yourself. No more obsessing, no more spirals—just real change that starts from the inside out. "Most of us were taught weight loss equals restriction. But real freedom isn't about following food rules. It is emotional mastery. It's having a nervous system that doesn't panic when you're tired, sad, overwhelmed, a nervous system that also doesn't panic when you experience your next level of joy or excitement. When you close a deal at work or you have some kind of personal breakthrough in your life or you get married or something incredible happens, your nervous system needs to be able to calibrate for that and know how to react and respond. Is also being able to hear your body and respond to it with love instead of punishment." - Leslie Thornton What you will learn from this episode: 04:24 - Why your ideal weight isn't hiding at the gym — it's buried under snack panic and food rules 05:41 - Your ideal-weight self isn't more disciplined – she's just less obsessed 08:38 - Food freedom as all about compassion and not about control 11:12 - Drawing from her own experience and how she broke free from food addiction labels and restriction panic 15:48 - Not a willpower issue but an unconscious wiring 18:09 - Leslie helping you spot the real problem hiding under the surface so you can finally let it go 21:54 - Chasing shiny fixes won't set you free, choose the real glow-up instead Valuable Resources: Join my next LIVE masterclass Join the 8-week Fastrack to Food Freedom Program -Guaranteed mental and emotional freedom from food Connect With Leslie Thornton: Book A Clarity Call Website Facebook LinkedIn Email: Leslie@hpwl.co If you enjoy the podcast, Would you please consider leaving a quick review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes in under 60 seconds? Salim Najjar is a former nuclear engineer turned wellness entrepreneur and HRV educator. After co-founding Sound, a pioneering unsweetened sparkling tea brand, he spent years biohacking his way through performance culture—until his body forced him to listen. Now, Salim is on a mission to teach people how to regulate their nervous systems, master their stress, and reconnect with their bodies through the lens of HRV (Heart Rate Variability). His work bridges engineering, spirituality, and somatic awareness to help high-performers access true resilience from within. In this episode, Salim Najjar returns to go deep on the one metric he believes can change your health and your life: HRV. After burning out while building his beverage company, Salim discovered that high performance without recovery leads to breakdown. This conversation unpacks his six-year deep dive into nervous system regulation—from biohacking and Bikram yoga to trauma processing, spiritual surrender, and living nomadically. If you want to understand stress at its root and build lasting resilience in a chaotic world, this episode is your blueprint. In this episode of Fitness & Sushi, Deanna redefines the “Ideal Body” — not as a goal weight or appearance, but as a reflection of your values, self-care, and life season. After navigating perimenopause, mental health changes, and body shifts, she shares why the Ideal Body is not something you chase — it's something you allow. In this episode, you'll learn:
Happy Satiated Saturday! Labels like stress eating and emotional eating need some updating. By tacking on the words stress or emotional to eating, it gives the perception that the "problem" is stress or emotions, and if you can fix being a stressed person or person who feels (an impossible task), THEN the food behavior might go away. Stress and emotions are a part of life. Because of this, the practice can be to see the presence of stress or any emotion as body communication. It is telling you how it is processing your external and internal environments. Your body doesn't need help getting rid of the stress or the emotion. These things are present to get your attention that your body needs your support. With this perspective, stress eating can be seen as a bodily messenger letting you know that your body needs you to connect. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Melissa McCreery, PhD, Psychologist, Emotional Eating Expert, and Author about: The complexities of stress eating including how stress impacts food choices and behaviorsNavigating emotional responses to foodPractical strategies for pausing and checking inBuilding routines around self check insAcknowledging your needs and who you want to be that could lead to making different food decisionsBefriending stressYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: www.stephaniemara.com/blog/navigating-stress-eatingI loved this episode and I hope you enjoy it as well! WORK WITH MEIn 2018, when I officially became incorporated as a company, I named my business Sustainable Health Project. I was a health & fitness coach at the time but I've always valued sustainable results. I wasn't interested in short term quick fix results. Even when I was healing my relationship with food, I didn't want to be binge free for a month or feel good in my own skin before a vacation. I wanted this for LIFE. My clients desire this too.So even when I transitioned out of health & fitness coaching, I still kept this name. I never resonated with FOOD FREEDOM. I was never going to be the coach that just helped you eat what you wanted. I wanted to be the coach that helped you have freedom of choice where you have such a healthy mindset around food that you feel so empowered around what you chose to eat.Health- I've always valued my health beyond what I was eating and how I was working out. I value spiral health knowing that God has the most extraordinary plan for my life.Social health & being connected to people who love me and know my heart.Physical health - and being strong in my workouts, having incredible health markers when I get blood work done. High energy, no bloating or inflammation. Living a long life.Emotional health- knowing how to process my emotions without food. Feeling safe to fully express myself and all parts of who I am.The word project came from me believing that I'm always a work in progress. I will be 90 years old and still be working on myself, my growth and becoming the greatest version of myself.Yesterday on a client coaching call, she said: I realized that the best project that I've been working on has been myself & I'm so proud of that” and that's when this all landed.I'm the mentor for woman who value growth as a whole human. You don't just want to stop binge eating. You want to meet your higher self. Fall so deeply in love with who you are. Find what you're passionate about. Stretch yourself daily. Show yourself what you're capable of. Have strong boundaries, process your emotions without food. Wake up and feel like a freaking badass every damn day.God did not put you on this planet for you to live a good life. You're meant to live the most extraordinary life. Full of joy, self love, freedom. You'll conquer binge eating & feel unstoppable when you focus on doing things sustainably (aka using my root & Rewire process to rewire your brain out of binge eating), you prioritize your health more than you ever have before and you constantly focus on growth as a whole human. This is the work I do with my clients and when you're ready for that, my mentorship is for youCONNECT WITH LORNA:---> Instagram @lorna_bingeeatingcoach---> Tiktok @lorna_bingeeatingcoach
From FBI to Food Freedom: How Holly Cracked the Code on Emotional EatingAfter spending years tracking spies as an FBI counterintelligence agent, Holly never imagined her greatest investigation would be into her own relationship with food.Despite being a health coach, she was secretly struggling—battling emotional eating, stuck in diet culture, and carrying a heavy load of shame. That is, until she realized that the same strategies she used in national security—identifying patterns, anticipating behavior, and neutralizing threats—could help her crack the emotional eating code, too. Now, Holly helps high-achieving midlife women break free from emotional eating and rebel against the toxic rules of diet culture. Her signature 3-Step Process—See It, Stop It, Shift It—combines neuroscience with counterintelligence principles to help women finally feel in control, without relying on willpower or restriction. In this episode, we cover:
Hey Heal Squad! We're continuing the theme of gut-brain health and bringing back an amazing 2 part episode with the brilliant Dr. Will Cole! In the first part of our conversation, we're talking all about the emotional roots of our eating patterns and how food guilt, shame, and emotional triggers can sabotage both your health and happiness. Dr. Cole breaks down how our relationship with food is often shaped by trauma, cultural messaging, and emotional dysregulation—and how healing your gut can also help heal your brain and your inner world. If you're tired of conflicting nutrition advice and just want to know what actually works in 2025 for a lean body, balanced hormones, and a healthy gut, this episode is for you. I'm breaking down the TRUE essentials of eating well in today's world, with a no-fluff, practical approach rooted in both science and real-life results. We'll talk about why high-quality animal protein, especially grass-fed meat and pasture-raised eggs, should be a foundation for most women. You'll learn how veggies and digestion are closely linked, and why gas and bloating might be telling you something deeper about your gut health. We'll also cover the best ways to enjoy fruit without blood sugar crashes, how to optimize your omega-3 intake for hormone support, and why natural salt is not the enemy despite what old-school advice might say. This is not a restrictive food list or trendy diet. It's a framework to help you eat in a way that actually supports your body long-term.
