If you've ever felt stuck in the cycle of losing weight, regaining it, and then starting over again, you're not alone. Today we're unpacking yo-yo dieting. Why it happens, what it does to your body, and how to finally break free. Yo-yo dieting often starts with extreme calorie restriction, leading to rapid weight loss that looks successful on the surface. But beneath the scale, your body is losing muscle, becoming inflamed, and stressing your hormones. Inevitably, the restrictive approach becomes impossible to maintain, weight creeps back on (often as fat rather than muscle), and the cycle repeats, sometimes with even greater difficulty losing weight each time. We'll dive into the hidden consequences of yo-yo dieting, from slower metabolism and muscle loss to leptin resistance, where your hunger and fullness hormones stop working properly. This not only makes weight loss harder but also increases cravings, fat storage, and frustration while taking a serious toll on mental health. But it's not all bad news. Breaking free from yo-yo dieting is possible by shifting focus from quick fixes to long-term, sustainable habits. We'll talk about the importance of fueling your body, rebuilding metabolic health, and supporting your hormones with balanced nutrition and consistency. You'll also hear about our client Kayla, who went from eating less than 1,300 calories per day without results, to eating hundreds more, feeling better than ever, and finally seeing her body respond. Her story proves that nourishment, not restriction, is the foundation for lasting health. If you're tired of the yo-yo rollercoaster, this episode will give you clarity, encouragement, and practical steps to move toward real, sustainable change. Time Stamps: (1:21) Omar's Favorite Trait about Vanessa(4:20) Yo-Yo Dieting(5:56) Characteristics of Yo-Yo Dieting(11:56) Weight Regain(13:32) Cycle Repetition(15:42) Why Yo-Yo Dieting Doesn't Work(21:44) Leptin Resistance(31:28) Please Share This Episode---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? You can find all the new resources and ways to connect with me in the show notes. I hope you are having the best summer! Enjoy! Let's dive in and revisit the best of the best! It isn't that it's too hard. You can trust the process. And it definitely isn't your lack of willpower. The things holding you back from food freedom may not be what you expect. In today's episode, I'm unpacking six fear-based blockers that can quietly sabotage your path to empowered eating—and how to move past them with compassion and clarity. Here's what we're covering:  1. Fast (but not good) results If I had a dollar for every person who lost weight fast and regained it (plus more)... I'd be opening a restaurant and serving you all dinner. Don't be distracted by someone else's temporary success. Real change takes balance and time.  2. Resistance to natural changes Bodies change—because life changes. You're not meant to look like you did in high school. Postpartum bellies, aging skin, and new phases are part of being human. It's time we rewrite the narrative.  3. Unrealistic expectations Are you setting goals that your current season of life can't support? Let's talk about tuning into God's vision for you—so you can focus on what really matters and feel successful doing it.  4. Not living in the present You can't connect to your body if you're constantly in your head. Biofeedback only works when you're here—not planning the next diet, not reliving last weekend's food choices. Just here. 5. Lack of gratitude We've been trained to pick apart our bodies. But when you shift your focus to what your body can do and how it's serving you, your mindset (and choices) start to change.  6. Inability to find satisfaction in food Legalizing all foods can feel scary—but it's also the gateway to freedom. True satisfaction changes your cravings, your choices, and your relationship with food for the long haul. Staying lean isn't about overhauling your entire lifestyle overnight. it's about stacking small, sustainable habits that actually stick. In this episode, we dive into the everyday choices that make the biggest difference when it comes to feeling strong, energetic, and confident year-round. We start by talking about why highly satiating foods are your best friend (especially during those times when hunger seems dialed up) and how minimizing calorie-dense “extras” can keep you feeling satisfied without the crash. From there, we break down the power of a “something over nothing” mentality when it comes to resistance training because it's not about perfection, it's about consistency. You'll also hear why making physical activity a lifestyle is key. Omar shares how Spartan races with his family keep him motivated, I talk about my time riding horses, and we both agree that nothing beats a simple walk. We also unpack the sneaky calories that come from what we drink, why sleep is the real performance enhancer, and how patience and consistency are often the missing ingredients in most fitness journeys. Most importantly, we'll remind you not to obsess over the scale or occasional feelings of heaviness. Progress is much deeper than a number. And when it comes to food, just because it's free doesn't mean you have to eat it. The goal is to choose intentionally, not impulsively. If you've been searching for a realistic, non-extreme approach to staying lean, this episode will give you practical tools and a mindset shift that can last a lifetime. Time Stamps: (1:17) Omar's High and Low This Week(4:17) Ultramarathon Runner's Perspective(6:17) Fresh Spin On An Old Topic(7:08) Small Habits For Staying Lean(9:30) #1: Choose Highly Satiating Foods(13:27) #2: Resistance Train: Something Over Nothing Mentality(15:22) #3: Make Physical Activity A Lifestyle(17:45) #4: Don't Drink Our Calories(19:44) #5: Prioritize Sleep(20:28) #6: Practice Consistency and Patience(21:27) #7: Don't Obsess Over The Scale or Occasional Feelings of Heaviness(23:04) #8: Free Doesn't Mean You Need to Eat It---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. Recovery from disordered eating doesn't end the moment bingeing stops — that's often where an entirely new phase begins. In this episode, Stef and Sarah unpack the often-overlooked “middle ground” of recovery — the stage where the chaos of bingeing has quieted, but true peace with food still feels out of reach. Stef describes this phase as a kind of emotional limbo: the urgency is gone, but now there's loneliness, uncertainty, and a disorienting sense of now what?. Sarah shares how she moved from bingeing to occasional overeating, and how easy it was to slip into black-and-white thinking without recognizing the real progress she'd already made. Together, they explore: what this “no man's land” actually looks and feels like why it's normal to struggle more with self-image once the bingeing stops the importance of community, language, and support during this time how to build trust in yourself before everything feels fully healed why this middle stage isn't failure — it's where real integration happens If you're past the acute phase but still don't feel “recovered,” this conversation will help you name where you are, trust the process, and move forward with more clarity (and less self-judgment). If you've ever wondered why you keep waking up at 2am, 3am, or right before your alarm goes off, this episode is for you. Middle-of-the-night wake-ups aren't random; they're your body's way of sending signals that something deeper might be out of balance.  Instead of brushing it off as “just bad sleep,” we'll break down what your wake-up times might be revealing about your hormones, gut, blood sugar, and more. Think of your sleep like a night shift at a factory. Different departments run on different schedules. If one department has a problem, the alarm goes off at that time. By tracking your wake-up patterns, you can start to see the clues your body is leaving. We'll dive into the most common causes, from blood sugar dips and cortisol spikes, to low progesterone, high histamine, and even liver overload. You'll hear simple analogies like your brain's “glass of wine” being empty without progesterone, or your liver as the night shift cleaner making noise when it's overloaded that make these complex concepts easy to understand. We'll also cover lifestyle factors like blue light, meal timing, hydration, and circadian rhythm, because sometimes the simplest tweaks make the biggest difference.  By the end, you'll know how to decode your body's signals, track what's really happening, and take small, sustainable steps toward better sleep. Your body isn't broken. It's communicating. This episode will help you finally understand the messages and reclaim deep, restorative rest.  Time Stamps:  (1:25) Upcoming Retreat (3:22) Why Do I Wake Up In The Middle Of The Night? (5:50) Timing Of When You're Waking Up At Night (8:47) 1 to 3 AM and The Liver (9:32) Dryer Lint Talk (11:09) Common Causes of Waking Up (15:17) Cortisol and Blood Sugar (18:05) Low Progesterone (23:54) Dehydration (26:50) Gut Imbalances (29:39) Lifestyle Factors (32:41) First Steps---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. Ever wondered if counting macros is just another restrictive diet—or if it could actually help you feel more empowered in your weight loss journey? This episode will give you major clarity. In today's guest episode, I'm joined by the incredible Amber Brueseke—mom of four, former RN, personal trainer, and founder of Biceps After Babies. Amber is living proof that your fittest days can come after babies (and yes, even in your 40s), and she's here to challenge everything you think you know about dieting and sustainable weight loss. We're breaking down how macro counting isn't about eating less—it's about eating smarter. Amber shares how she used data, not deprivation, to align her nutrition with her goals (and why she ate ice cream every night and still got abs). From building muscle to feeling energized, we talk about using food as a tool—not a punishment—and how to ditch the “all-or-nothing” mindset that keeps so many women stuck.Amber breaks down the difference between using macros as a tool vs. treating them like another restrictive diet, how to get out of the all-or-nothing mindset, and why your “fittest self” might still be ahead of you (even in your 40s, 50s, and beyond). One of my favorite parts of this episode is when Amber introduces the “macro scientist” mindset—where curiosity replaces judgment and numbers become neutral. Whether you've been burned by calorie counting in the past, feel stuck in all-or-nothing thinking, or you're deep into your mindful eating journey—this conversation offers a fresh, freeing perspective on what's actually possible.xoxo, JackieCONNECT WITH AMBER:Instagram: @biceps.after.babiesPodcast: Biceps After Babies RadioWebsite: Bicepsafterbabies.com MORE FROM JACKIE: >

Happy Satiated Saturday! After years and years of navigating food cravings, it was the field of somatics that started to shift my perception of them. I used to think of cravings as something I had to do battle with and couldn't listen to until I realized that I was defining listening to cravings as abiding by them and that listening to my craving meant I needed to eat the food some part of me was telling me to eat. I now experience and teach that cravings are bodily messengers. Cravings are meant to be listened to by bringing in curiosity about what the body might be trying to relay through having you want to eat a particular food. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Jenn Trepeck, Certified Health & Nutrition Coach, about: Decoding cravingsThe nutritional and blood sugar aspects to cravingsThe role of guilt in cravingsPractical strategies to navigating your food cravingsYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: www.stephaniemara.com/blog/understanding-the-science-behind-food-cravingsWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Jenn:Website: https://asaladwithasideoffries.com/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/salad-with-a-side-of-fries-nutrition-wellness-weight-loss/id1476096152Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jenntrepeck/?hl=enSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Ever feel like your cravings (or impulses) have control over you?In this episode, we're breaking down a simple but powerful process to take back your power without relying on willpower alone. You'll learn how to pause in the moment, understand why the urge is there, and see it for what it really is (hint: you won't explode if you don't give in).  I'll walk you through how to write down the urge, your perceived reasons for acting on it, and then uncover the true cost of giving in. From there, we'll make a decision from a slower, clearer place rather than from that instant “must do it now” energy. I'll also share a personal example of how I've experienced this urge loop in my work life, and how simply planning when I'll handle something helps my brain relax. We'll talk about why saying “no” often makes the urge stronger at first and how to ride it like a wave instead of letting it sweep you away.  Think of it like handling an angry toddler's tantrum: it feels intense, but it passes.  By the end, you'll have a repeatable framework for handling cravings, emotional eating triggers, or even those distracting work pings that derail your focus. With honesty, nuance, and hard-won clarity, Marcus shares what it's been like to recognize autistic traits later in life, to untangle years of masking, and to reframe behaviors that once felt like personal failings as natural responses to a world not built for his brain. We talk about the overlap between autism and disordered eating, the tension between sensory overwhelm and nourishment, and the emotional weight of trying to function in social environments that feel confusing or unsafe. This episode moves slowly and intentionally through themes of identity, regulation, emotional flooding, and the pressure to “get it right” in recovery. It's a conversation for anyone who's ever suspected that their struggles with food, emotion, or connection might be rooted in something deeper than what's visible, and for anyone curious about the intersection of neurodivergence and healing.   Join our support community. kim's story is a full-body exhale for anyone who still thinks carbs = chaos. from fearing fruit to fueling with sourdough and building actual muscle definition, she learned the hard way what most women never get taught: carbs aren't earned, they're essential. years of diet culture made her world smaller—and how lifting, smart fueling, and brick-by-brick consistency rebuilt her body and her mindset.take one minute and voice note how you talk about your body—then listen back. what version of you is driving?this episode dives into the psychological load of dieting—the guilt, the fear of more food, the way restriction becomes your identity. kim opens up about the mindset spiral that came with under-eating and the physical transformation that followed when she finally gave herself permission to fuel, train, and enjoy the process.what if the fat‑loss plateau, the cranky afternoon slump, and that nagging scale‑stall all share one root cause—chronic under‑fueling? in this episode i sit down with kim, a former carb‑phobe (who has type‑1 diabetes) turned diet fatigue into a deadlift party. we rip apart the rules that kept her living on chicken, broccoli, and boredom, and show you how timing carbs around strength sessions can flatten insulin spikes, spike confidence, and finally shrink measurements you care about—jeans, not kilos.we unpack why the scale sabotages motivation, how progress photos can freeze you in perfectionism, and why “stage‑lean” bodies are a metabolic bait‑and‑switch. expect real talk, eye‑roll moments at diet culture, and practical swaps you can steal today: think pre‑lift toast + honey, post‑lift rice + chicken, plus a mindset reframe that turns missed workouts into single bricks—not house fires.if you've ever counted grapes, feared fruit, or apologised for bread, this convo is your permission slip. kim and i dissect the myths that made her world smaller—“carbs store fat,” “keto cures everything,” “cardio is queen”—and rebuild a plan that lets her travel greece guilt‑free, lift heavier every quarter, and drop insulin units while eating sourdough. we cover the brick‑by‑brick method to sustainable recomposition, stress as the silent macro killing progress, and why pumping iron trumps pounding treadmills for anyone over thirty‑five who's tired of feeling soft.win # 1: set a five‑minute timer and list yesterday's meals—notice how low the carbs actually were.win #2: grab a pen and list every food you've felt guilty for eating—then draw a line through the carb-based ones.win #3: after listening, choose one lift you'll measure this week instead of your weight—tag me with the number.want to share your own carb‑comeback story—or need help writing yours? dm me or hit the consult link below. let's chat.find me @transformxruby on instagramapply for a free consult:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfqaxMDfbPYPYVui3BgSClnDXTj4BWjRvPkbBHuK5CP7SQsIw/viewform?usp=sf_linkdirect link to dm me on ig: https://ig.me/m/transformxruby

Welcome to my Summer Throwback Playlist—a handpicked collection of the most downloaded episodes of the podcast. These are listener favorites, packed with insights, laughs, and empowered eating encouragement to keep you fueled all summer long. A quick heads up: since these are throwbacks, you might hear old references to programs or events that are no longer active—but the heart of each episode still hits. Let's dive in and revisit the best of the best! In the very first episode of Fuel Her Awesome, I shared my journey from disordered eating to food freedom. But that wasn't the end of the story. In today's episode, I'm taking you into the next chapter—how I went from simply having food freedom to stepping fully into Empowered Eating. For a long time, I believed I had to choose: Be obsessive about food but feel good in my body or Accept my body fully, but live with a low-grade discomfort I was afraid that focusing on my health would pull me back into obsession, and I honestly didn't know if there was a middle ground. But there is—and this episode is about how I found it, why I made the leap, and how Empowered Eating became the answer I didn't know I needed.

You've been doing “all the right things” for a few weeks. Eating better, moving your body but the scale hasn't budged. Sound familiar? That's not failure.  That's normal. In this episode, we unpack the uncomfortable truth: healing and real transformation take time, often much longer than we want. You'll hear why quick fixes and crash diets set you up for disappointment, and why slow, steady progress is the only path to sustainable change.  We'll talk about prepping your body before weight loss even begins, what to expect when you start eating more, and why discomfort (yes, including hunger and resistance) is part of the journey. I also share what it took for me to transform over two years and why I still don't believe in a “finish line.”  If you're frustrated with your progress or tempted to give up after a few weeks, this episode will reframe everything.
