Marcus returns as the only guest we've ever invited back to the podcast, and in this conversation, he opens up about his evolving understanding of neurodivergence — particularly through the lens of autism — and how that realization has reshaped his recovery from an eating disorder, his relationships, and his sense of self. With honesty, nuance, and hard-won clarity, Marcus shares what it's been like to recognize autistic traits later in life, to untangle years of masking, and to reframe behaviors that once felt like personal failings as natural responses to a world not built for his brain. We talk about the overlap between autism and disordered eating, the tension between sensory overwhelm and nourishment, and the emotional weight of trying to function in social environments that feel confusing or unsafe. This episode moves slowly and intentionally through themes of identity, regulation, emotional flooding, and the pressure to “get it right” in recovery. It's a conversation for anyone who's ever suspected that their struggles with food, emotion, or connection might be rooted in something deeper than what's visible, and for anyone curious about the intersection of neurodivergence and healing.   Join our support community. If you've ever wondered how to truly support your body after coming off birth control or what to do first when you're feeling bloated and sluggish,  this episode is for you. In part two of our Q&A series, we're diving into your most-requested questions: going deep on women's health, hormone balance, and big-picture life goals. I share my supplement thoughts post–birth control, why broad advice often backfires without proper bloodwork, and how our FLUSH protocol helps set a strong foundation for healing.  We also discuss what most women get wrong before coming to Vital Spark and whether a DUTCH test is worth it while still on hormonal contraception. From there, we get personal: what I would tell my past self, how we're thinking about family 20 years down the line, and even some of my non-profit aspirations for the future.  Finally, I break down the first steps to take when you're bloated, fatigued, and don't know where to start so you can stop spinning your wheels and start feeling like yourself again. This one is packed with both strategy and soul. Whether you're here for the hormone hacks, the mindset shifts, or just a little encouragement for your own journey, you'll leave with clarity and practical next steps to move forward with confidence. Time Stamps: (1:32) Curly or Straight Hair? (3:27) Top Supplements After Getting Off Birth Control (11:22) Bloodwork Over Broad Recommendations (12:50) FLUSH Protocol (16:21) What Most Women Are Doing Wrong Before Coming to Vital Spark (19:37) DUTCH Test on Birth Control? (22:50) What Vanessa Would Tell Her Past Self (26:28) 20 Years Later and Future Family (30:02) Non-Profit Future Aspirations (33:02) What To Prioritize When Bloating---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? Let's dive in and revisit the best of the best! In the very first episode of Fuel Her Awesome, I shared my journey from disordered eating to food freedom. But that wasn't the end of the story. In today's episode, I'm taking you into the next chapter—how I went from simply having food freedom to stepping fully into Empowered Eating. For a long time, I believed I had to choose: Be obsessive about food but feel good in my body or Accept my body fully, but live with a low-grade discomfort I was afraid that focusing on my health would pull me back into obsession, and I honestly didn't know if there was a middle ground. But there is—and this episode is about how I found it, why I made the leap, and how Empowered Eating became the answer I didn't know I needed.

In this episode, we unpack the uncomfortable truth: healing and real transformation take time, often much longer than we want. You'll hear why quick fixes and crash diets set you up for disappointment, and why slow, steady progress is the only path to sustainable change.  We'll talk about prepping your body before weight loss even begins, what to expect when you start eating more, and why discomfort (yes, including hunger and resistance) is part of the journey. I also share what it took for me to transform over two years and why I still don't believe in a “finish line.”  If you're frustrated with your progress or tempted to give up after a few weeks, this episode will reframe everything. Whenever someone asks me how they're supposed to ditch dieting if they have high cholesterol, I love opening their eyes with the wide array of strategies that can help lower their numbers - without cutting out things like butter or eggs, and meticulously logging everything in MyFitnessPal.    In this episode, I'm taking you behind-the-scenes on how I discovered I have high cholesterol at 22 years old, and the multitude of things I've done to manage it (some strategies more effective than others). I share the things that help, the things that were too extreme, and what I'm currently experimenting with to support my cholesterol levels like supplements, certain foods, and a new type of movement I've added in recently.   This is partially a personal story, and partially a lesson in how to leverage gentle nutrition and lifestyle (rather than restriction and dieting) to directly address high cholesterol. I'm not holding back - I am also sharing the immediate thoughts and feelings that went through my head whenever I'd get my labs back, and how I think completely differently now.   If you've ever worried that intuitive eating might be bad for your health, or that you “have to” restrict your food because of your bloodwork, this episode is for you!   Episode Highlights   What I could have done…and why I didn't How I'm actually navigating my high cholesterol now (vs what I used to do) The mindset work that has moved me from shame and fear >> to calm and empowered What I want YOU to know about managing your health   Today's Wellness Woo is wellness shots.   Resources Mentioned   - Click here to take my free 2-minute quiz to Discover Your Unique Path to Food Freedom! - Register (for free) for the 3-day video series happening July 16-18   Read the full episode show notes here.   Resources for Your Intuitive Eating Journey   Intuitive eating education on the blog Work with Katy Explore the self-paced mini-course Stepping Off The Dieting Rollercoaster     Connect with Katy Harvey   Website: KatyHarvey.net Instagram: @katyharvey.rd Facebook: KatyHarveyRD      Subscribe and Review   Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts   I would be thrilled if you could rate and review my podcast! If you're eating clean, working out, and still not losing weight… your gut might be the missing piece.  In today's episode, I'm breaking down 10 reasons why gut health directly impacts your metabolism, hormones, and ability to lose fat and why testing with a GI MAP could be the game-changer you've been missing. We'll talk about how certain gut infections like H. pylori or parasites keep your body in survival mode, signaling it to hold on to fat. You'll learn how your gut bacteria influence your cravings, blood sugar, and even your metabolism through short-chain fatty acids like butyrate.  I'll explain why hidden gut inflammation can block fat loss and how slow digestion (aka not pooping daily) recirculates estrogen and toxins, stalling your progress. We'll also dive into how bad bacteria can steal essential nutrients you need for fat-burning, how gut health affects your thyroid function, and why your gut impacts not just your body, but your brain chemistry and motivation too.  Plus, I'll explain why detoxing estrogen properly is key to shedding stubborn fat and how even the “perfect” diet won't work if your gut can't break down food and eliminate waste. This episode will help you see why your gut is the foundation of sustainable weight loss and why it's not just about willpower or cutting calories.  If you're feeling stuck, testing your gut might be the missing link to get your body working with you again. Time Stamps: (2:52) Talking Gut Health (6:02) #1: You Can't Lose Weight in Survival Mode (8:22) #2: Your Gut Bugs Influence Your Cravings (13:08) #3: Gut Bacteria Talk to Your Metabolism (14:52) #4: Hidden inflammation = Blocked Fat Loss (17:12) #5: If You're Not Pooping Daily, Weight Loss Will Stall (19:47) #6: “Bad bugs” Steal Your Nutrients (21:32) #7: Your Gut Affects Your Thyroid (24:20) #8: Gut Health = Brain Chemistry = Motivation (27:22) #9: Detox Matters Especially For Estrogen (29:52) #10: Your Gut Makes or Breaks Your Ability to Respond to Nutrition---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. If you want more self-worth or confidence, you have to give it to yourself. Stop making it contingent on a smaller body. The more we tie our self-worth to our body, the more uncomfortable we feel in our own skin. Instead of using food and exercise to meet our needs and help us feel our best, we end up using them as tools to control our body and our value. Any unwanted number on the scale can trigger a collapse in self-worth. To solve this, you have to separate your body from your body image — and start working on the latter. Adopting these messages (willingly or not) often creates debilitating battles with how we see our bodies. This negative body relationship can permeate nearly every aspect of life and diminish our entire experience. Heather found herself 60 pounds heavier and stuck in a cycle of sugar addiction. After three pregnancies and the emotional and physical rollercoaster that came with them… her breakthrough finally came after baby number three. This time, she approached THM with intention—studying the principles, taking them seriously, and embracing the truth behind them. The result? Rapid (but sustainable) fat-loss and a total shift in how she viewed her body. Heather discovered that control isn't a dirty word—it's freedom. By learning how to fuel her body with health, she broke free from stress and anxiety around food. Now, she moves forward with confidence. While she doesn't always stick to THM recipes (her husband handles most of the cooking), she still anchors every meal in protein. And she dialed in the details of the THM Plan to guide her family's nutrition. Check Out some of the Tools that Helped Her Below! Ep. 230 Why Your Body Feels Broken (Even When You're Doing Everything Right)

I've been getting a lot of questions lately as our following and show has grown such as: “What actually is a functional health approach to weight loss?” “Are labs like the GI Map or DUTCH test worth it?” “What do I even do with the results?” If you've ever thought, “I eat clean. I work out. I track my food. And yet… nothing's changing,” this episode is for you. In today's conversation, I open up about what I've learned after years of doing everything “right” and still feeling inflamed, exhausted, and stuck in a body that felt like it was working against me. We'll unpack the real reasons your body may be resisting fat loss, healing, and energy. To all the ill-informed men in my comments: It's not just discipline or willpower or eating less and moving more. You'll learn why functional testing can reveal what basic labs miss, and how systems like your gut, thyroid, liver, and adrenals all communicate in a connected “group chat”, where one disruption creates a cascade. I'll share the exact myths I had to break about weight loss, hormones, and healing and the turning point that finally helped me get real answers. This episode is about reconnecting with your body, learning to read its signals, and understanding that your symptoms aren't random, they're messages. You'll walk away with clarity, compassion for yourself, and hope that yes, this is fixable. If your body feels broken… this is the permission slip and path forward you've been waiting for. Time Stamps: (1:37) Getting A Lot of Questions As We've Grown (2:57) Doing All The Right Things And Still Stuck? (3:47) I Was There Not Too Long Ago (7:02) The Eat Less and Move More Belief (12:16) Adrenals and Cortisol (15:03) Liver and Detoxification (22:52) Looking Holistically At The Body (27:06) DUTCH Test and GI Map (28:38) What The Healing Process Looks Like (31:24) Our 1-1 Coaching---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation.
