All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories #082 for January 2026 - Happy 200th Birthday!  Part 1 - Martha Coston: She Had a Certain Flare Martha Coston significantly advanced maritime communication by developing pyrotechnic signal flares that could be seen day and night, improving naval operations and safety at sea. Ships originally used signal flags and lanterns to communicate, but these were limited by visibility and weather conditions, especially at night. Martha received her first patent in 1859, initially in Benjamin's name, and after extensive testing and negotiations, the U.S. Navy purchased her patent in 1861 during the Civil War. Coston flares were crucial for naval communication, identifying friend or foe, and aiding in rescue operations, remaining in use until marine radios emerged in the 1930s. Martha and her sons expanded the business internationally, supplying various navies and services, with family members continuing operations into the late 19th century. Martha Coston died in 1904, with her invention enduring for decades; she was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.

Send us a textIn this episode of the Autoimmune RESET Podcast, I'm joined by Dr Jill Carnahan, MD — functional medicine physician, author of Unexpected, and someone whose clinical work is deeply shaped by her own lived experience of chronic illness.Jill shares her extraordinary personal journey, from growing up on a farm with heavy chemical exposure, to being diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer at just 25, followed by Crohn's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and later mould-related illness. Rather than accepting these diagnoses as isolated events, Jill's curiosity led her to ask the deeper question so many people with autoimmune disease eventually ask: why?From there, we explore one of the most complex and misunderstood areas in modern medicine — mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). Jill explains how mast cell activation is often not a primary diagnosis, but a downstream expression of deeper immune overload, driven by a combination of genetic susceptibility, infectious burden, toxic exposure, gut permeability, and nervous system stress.We discuss why MCAS is frequently missed or poorly understood in conventional medicine, what a true diagnosis involves, and why testing can be challenging and unreliable if not handled correctly. Jill also shares why attempting detoxification or antimicrobial treatment before stabilising mast cells can make symptoms dramatically worse — something many listeners may recognise from their own experience.This conversation goes beyond theory and testing. Jill walks through her clinical approach to stabilising mast cells, including where natural supports, medications, limbic system regulation, trauma work, and lifestyle foundations fit into the healing process. Over the last two weeks, the Polish government has been doubling down on its official narrative that, during the Second World War, its own people were the victims of the Germans—not responsible for collaborating in the murder of millions of Jews during the Holocaust. That policy has been law since 2018, and has led to strained relations with Israel, Holocaust survivors and academic scholars, including award-winning Canadian professor Jan Grabowski. Grabowski, a historian at the University of Ottawa and the child of a Warsaw Holocaust survivor, has spent years researching how ordinary Poles denounced, betrayed and helped carry out the murder of 200,000 Jews—mostly without any prodding from the Nazis. That's why Grabowski, who has been sued by the Polish state over this issue, has been closely monitoring the recent flare-ups involving Poland, Israel, and even Germany, which began at the end of November. It started on Nov. 19, when the new U.S. ambassador to Poland—an observant American Jew who used to run the Jerusalem Post—told a startled Warsaw conference that it was “a grotesque falsehood” and a “historic injustice” to blame Poland for Holocaust crimes committed by others. After that, a popular far-right member of the Polish parliament stood outside the gates of Auschwitz to oppose the country's plan to adopt a new antisemitism strategy. He called for Jews to be kicked out of the country. Then, on Nov. 25, the Israeli ambassador to Poland was summoned over a social media post from Yad Vashem. Takeaways Slingshots and blowguns are recreational toys, not viable self-defense tools, regardless of laser sights or marketing claims. While bows and crossbows are lethal, they are impractical for self-defense due to size and reload speed compared to modern options. A sturdy walking cane is an excellent "Plan B" defensive tool that is legal to carry almost anywhere, including airplanes.
