The wonderful Karen Witemeyer joins Alissa and Nicole as she gives insight into her special brand of historical romance, and some sneak peaks into the creation of Cloaked In Beauty.
When I heard about Karen Witemeyer doing fairy tales in 19th-century Texas, I knew this would be genius. But when I heard about Cloaked in Beauty, a mashup of Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty, her genius took on new proportions. Listen in to see why. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. A girl with a fortune and someone eager to kill her to get it? That might sound familiar, but nope... Witemeyer has taken a whole new take on both fairy tales, and I love it. EEEP! Not only that, but we're looking at at least one more book--based on Beauty and the Beast. And... we got a sneak peek at her next series... The Secret Society of Spinsters. Is that not the most genius idea ever? I can't wait! Cloaked in Beauty by Karen Witemeyer In the heart of the Piney Woods of Texas, Letty Hood has spent the last fifteen years of her life hidden away with her grandmother to escape the deadly schemes of an uncle who wants her dead. Now, with her twenty-first birthday on the horizon, she is forced to accept the escort of a stranger and return to Houston in secret so she can claim a birthright that will make her one of the wealthiest women in Texas. If she lives long enough to inherit. Pinkerton agent Philip Carmichael has one duty: get the Radcliffe heiress home alive. Expecting a spoiled girl, Philip is surprised to encounter a woman of rare strength with a kind soul and keen wit. As they journey together, Letty's resilience wins his admiration, breaking through his hardened cynicism. Yet the threat to Letty grows more menacing with every mile, and Philip fears that keeping her out of harm's way may be just as impossible as keeping her out of his heart. "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Sleeping Beauty" entwine for a romantic fairy tale retelling that explores the power of true love conquering even the darkest of nights. It was also there that she met and married her own Texas hero. He roped her in good, for she has lived in Texas ever since. In fact, she fell so in love with this rugged land of sweeping sunsets and enduring pioneer spirit, that she incorporates it into the pages of her novels, setting her stories in the small towns of a state that burgeoned into greatness in the mid- to late1800s.A life-long bookworm, Karen is living her dream by writing novels. Her books have consistently hit bestseller lists and have garnered numerous awards. When not writing, she loves to pester her adult children, play board games, and cross-stitch intricate patterns reminiscent of the historical eras present in her stories.Karen's favorite aspect of her writing life is hearing from readers. Nothing encourages her heart more. She'd love to hear from you. You can contact her here.Visit Karen's website.
I've never considered myself a cowboy romance person, but I do consider myself an avid Karen Witemeyer book reader. Her books launch to the top of my TBR pile with each release, so it's a delight to welcome her back to Book Talk. Today we are chatting about where she found her inspiration for cowboy romance — and it goes deeper than living in Texas, y'all. I loved digging into her latest series, based on retellings of fairy tales. But these fairy tales have all kinds of twists — and not just from being set in Texas on a ranch. She wants to redeem traditional villains, add in some booted fun and so much more. It's fun because Karen always knew she wanted to be a reader, but she didn't realize she also wanted to be a writer until later in her life. Since then she's written so many award-winning novels, that I had to ask what her advice to her younger self (or new authors) would be. Her words? Try to take the pressure off. So good! There's so much gold and fun in this chapter of Book Talk. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Connect with Karen Witemeyer Facebook | BookBub
Head into the wild west with CINDERELLA? Why yes! Karen Witemeyer takes us on ride with a fun, fairy tale retelling told in classic Witemeyer romantic style!
Nothing says fairy tale like a sweet western romance by an author like Karen Witemeyer... unless it's a fairytale retelling set in Texas in the late 19th century, right? Fairest of Heart takes the familiar "Snow White" and turns it on its head with retired cowboys, a self-absorbed actress, a Texas Ranger, and a sweet girl who knows the true Source of her beauty. Listen in to see all the genius Easter eggs Witemeyer planted in this book. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Sometimes All a Girl Needs Is a True Change of Heart I fell in love with the cover of Karen Witemeyer's Head Over Heels a few years back (only to learn it's much older than that, even), and meant to read that book. I didn't. #BecauseIdiot. Well, that'll be rectified just as soon as I'm done listening to her first book in a trilogy of fairytale retellings. I loaded it up on my Audible app tonight and wheeeeeeee. Here I go! So much for no new books until October. HA! Karen talks about her heart for young women today and how they're taught by every bit of media blasting at them that they need to use their bodies to get what they need or want when the Lord has a better plan. And I can't guarantee it, but I strongly suspect she does it without preaching. SQUEE! Fairest of Heart by Karen Witemeyer Once upon a time in Texas . . . Beauty has been nothing but a curse to Penelope Snow. When she becomes a personal maid for a famous actress whose troupe is leaving Chicago to tour the West, she hides her figure beneath shapeless dresses and keeps her head down. But she still manages to attract the wrong attention, leaving her prospects in tatters--and her jealous mistress plotting her demise. After his brother lost his life over a woman, Texas Ranger Titus Kingsley has learned to expect the worst from women and is rarely disappointed. So when a young lady found in suspicious circumstances takes up residence with the seven old drovers living at his grandfather's ranch, Titus is determined to keep a close eye on her. With a promotion hanging in the balance, Titus is assigned to investigate a robbery case tied to Penelope's acting troupe, and all evidence points to Penelope's guilt. But Titus might just be convinced that the fairest woman of all has a heart as pure as her last name . . . if only he can prove it. Today it is a pleasure to introduce you to my writing friend Kathleen Denly. Her historical fiction is set in 1850s San Diego County California, and you'll enjoy getting to learn more about her passion for discovering little-known aspects of California's history and transforming it into a story. We also enjoyed talking about her family's adoption journey and how that found its way into a couple of her novels including her most recent Murmur in the Mudcaves. If you enjoy novels by Tracie Peterson, Kimberley Woodhouse, and Karen Witemeyer, then you will enjoy this chance to learn about Kathleen and what she loves about writing (the discovery and brainstorming process) and what drives her crazy (all the details!). Orphaned at a young age and possessing a pair of mismatched eyes--one bright blue, the other dark brown--Eva has fought to find her way in a world that constantly rejects her. Yet the support of even one person can help overcome the world's judgments, and Eva has two--Seth and Zach, two former orphans she now counts as brothers. Seeking justice against the man who stole his birthright and destroyed his family, Logan Fowler arrives in 1880s Pecan Gap, Texas, to confront Zach Hamilton, the hardened criminal responsible for his father's death.
