FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text Message|The drumbeat of liberty that began at Lexington and Concord in 1775 would echo for eight long years before America secured its independence. Yet winning the war proved only the first challenge—creating a functioning nation would require even more patience, wisdom, and compromise. Most Americans don't realize that nearly four years passed between the Treaty of Paris (1783) and the Constitutional Convention (1787). During this critical period, our young nation struggled under the weak Articles of Confederation, facing economic instability, regional tensions, and even armed rebellion. Different regions—New England with its shipping interests, the agricultural Middle States, and the plantation South—viewed each other with suspicion and competed for economic advantage. When delegates finally gathered in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787, they faced the monumental task of strengthening the federal government without trampling the liberty they had just fought to secure. For three months and twenty-four days, they debated, compromised, and sometimes argued fiercely behind closed doors and sealed windows. The Great Compromise balanced the interests of large and small states, while the Three-Fifths Compromise attempted to address the contradiction of slavery in a nation founded on liberty—a solution that would contribute to sectional tensions for the next 75 years.Key Points from the Episode:• The American Revolutionary War began April 19, 1775, with the Battles of Lexington and Concord• The Declaration of Independence was adopted July 4, 1776, a full year after fighting began• Final major battle at Yorktown occurred in October 1781, but peace treaty wasn't signed until 1783• Articles of Confederation (America's first constitution) proved extremely weak and ineffective• Regional differences created intense conflicts between states over economic and political priorities• Shays' Rebellion in 1786-1787 demonstrated the need for stronger central government• Constitutional Convention lasted three months and twenty-four days during summer 1787• The Great Compromise balanced representation between large and small states• Most founders mistakenly believed slavery would naturally dissolve within a generation• Despite the summer setting, Philadelphia's weather in 1787 was relatively mild• Four years passed between the end of the Revolutionary War and the signing of the ConstitutionJoin us this whole next year as we celebrate America's 250th birthday and reflect on the exceptional nature of our national character that emerged through these challenging founding years.Keep fighting the good fight.Other resources: Lovers of Liberty--Book 5Lovers of Liberty--Book 4Lovers of Liberty--Book 3Lovers of Liberty--Book 2Want to leave a review? FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text Message|America's economic power stands unrivaled in human history. With only 6% of the world's population and land area, the United States generates nearly 30% of global GDP – a concentration of productive capacity that even ancient Rome at its height couldn't match.Unlike empires of conquest, America's global influence flows from something more profound: its wealth creation engine. John Steele Gordon's masterwork "Empire of Wealth" reveals how America's free-market principles, grounded in English traditions of liberty and property rights, unleashed unprecedented prosperity. The contrast with nations like Argentina – blessed with similar natural resources but hampered by different political traditions – demonstrates how crucial these foundational principles were to America's success. The American character has always embodied what some have called "Yankee ingenuity" – a relentless drive to improve through innovation. This spirit transformed everything from farming tools to governance systems, culminating in technological revolutions that reshaped human civilization. The computer revolution stands as a perfect example, collapsing information costs just as steam engines once transformed physical energy, creating entirely new possibilities for human advancement.America's economic success story isn't just fascinating history – it's the foundation of our national power and global influence. As we celebrate our country's birthday, we should recognize that our prosperity wasn't inevitable or accidental, but the direct result of liberty-centered principles established at our founding. If you're curious about how America became an economic superpower and why its model continues to inspire the world, this exploration of our economic heritage offers invaluable insights into what makes America truly exceptional.Key Points from the Episode:• The United States produces 30% of world GDP with just 6% of global population and land area• Unlike past empires that conquered through military force, America's influence comes through economic success• John Steele Gordon's book "Empire of Wealth" presents America's economic history from colonial days to modern times• America's economic success stems from English traditions of liberty, property rights, and rule of law• The computer revolution collapsed information costs similar to how steam engines transformed physical energy• American economic principles have spread globally because people everywhere want similar prosperity• Free market capitalism forms the foundation of America's military, cultural and technological powerKeep fighting the good fight.Other resources: Lovers of Liberty--Book 5Lovers of Liberty--Book 4Lovers of Liberty--Book 3Want to leave a review? FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text Message|The drums of liberty beat loudly through America's most transformative period—the Civil War and the Reconstruction era that followed. These pivotal years not only ended slavery but fundamentally reimagined what America could become through three constitutional amendments that would forever change the nation's character and legal foundation. At the heart of David Kaiser's passionate discussion lies Eric Foner's "The Second Founding," a book that examines how the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments collectively redefined America. Despite acknowledging Foner's liberal political leanings, David makes a compelling case for why conservatives should engage with this scholarly work. The book illuminates a period many Americans know little about but whose consequences shape our daily lives. From establishing birthright citizenship to guaranteeing equal protection under law, these amendments transferred significant power from states to the federal government, creating what many historians rightfully call America's "second founding."The episode delves into the tragic paradox of Reconstruction—Republicans won the war but "lost the peace" for the next hundred years. This failure to secure lasting equality raises profound questions that still haunt American society: Who deserves citizenship? How should voting rights be protected? What is the proper balance between state and federal power? As David reminds us, "It is impossible to understand American society today without knowing something about the Reconstruction period." Whether you're preparing to celebrate America's upcoming 249th birthday or simply seeking deeper knowledge about our constitutional heritage, this exploration of Reconstruction's ongoing legacy offers essential context for appreciating both America's struggles and its enduring promise. Subscribe now to continue our journey through the five essential books every lover of liberty should read.Key Points from the Episode:• The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments collectively formed a "second founding" of America• Eric Foner's "The Second Founding" provides deep historical context despite the author's liberal political views• Republicans won the Civil War but "lost the peace" during Reconstruction• The amendments shifted power from states to the federal government in unprecedented ways• Key Reconstruction questions about citizenship, voting rights, and equality still shape American society today• Most Americans remain unfamiliar with this crucial period despite its ongoing relevance• Understanding Reconstruction is essential to understanding modern America• Recommended additional reading includes works by Randy Barnett, Alan Gelso, and Wilfred McClay's "Land of Hope"Keep fighting the good fight.Other resources: Lovers of Liberty--Book 5Lovers of Liberty--Book 4Want to leave a review? FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageTracing the intellectual lineage connecting America's founding fathers to modern conservatism reveals a profound relationship that's often overlooked in contemporary political discourse. This Liberty Minute episode—part of our special "Lovers of Liberty" series counting down to America's 249th birthday—explores Mark Levin's transformative work "Liberty and Tyranny" as the definitive conservative manifesto for our times. What makes Levin's book so powerful is how clearly it articulates the conservative worldview while demonstrating its direct connection to the founding principles. While exploring the historical context of conservatism's ebbs and flows—from its decline after Herbert Hoover through its resurrection with Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan—we discover that conservative principles never truly changed. They were merely waiting to be rediscovered and reapplied to contemporary challenges. The essence of both conservatism and America's founding lies in recognizing the dignity of individuals, their God-given natural rights, and the harmony of interests that creates a civil society. As Levin writes, "In the civil society, the individual is recognized and accepted as more than just an abstract statistic or faceless member of some group. Rather, he is a unique spiritual being with a soul and a conscience." This vision stands in stark contrast to statism, which sees the individual as subordinate to centralized authority. The founders understood this distinction perfectly, which is why they created a constitutional republic with limited government and robust individual liberty. Their wisdom remains our surest guide as we confront today's challenges and prepare to celebrate America's semiquincentennial. Have you considered how these founding principles still shape your life and liberty today?Key Points from the Episode:• Book four in our "Lovers of Liberty" special series celebrating America's upcoming 249th birthday• Historical context of conservatism from Calvin Coolidge through Reagan• Exploration of how conservatism connects to America's founding principles• The importance of individual dignity, God-given natural rights, and civil society • The rule of law and private property as inseparable from liberty• Why conservatism serves as "the antidote to tyranny"• The essential difference between conservatism and modern liberalism (statism)• How understanding founding principles helps us prepare for America's 250th birthdayJoin us tomorrow for book three in our countdown to July 4th as we continue celebrating America's exceptional national character.Keep fighting the good fight.Other resources: Lovers of Liberty--Book 5Want to leave a review? FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageHave you ever wondered why American history feels so contentious? As we approach America's 249th birthday, the question of how we understand our past has never been more critical. For too long, we've been caught between competing narratives – one sanitizing our failures, another dwelling exclusively on our sins. The Dunning School of historical thought dominated 20th century education, portraying Reconstruction as a failure while romanticizing the antebellum South. This perspective, taught in teachers' colleges nationwide, perpetuated "Lost Cause" mythology that obscured slavery's central role in the Civil War and downplayed the systemic violence that undermined Reconstruction. When Howard Zinn's "A People's History" emerged as a counterbalance in 1980, it swung so far toward Marxist critique that it often bred contempt rather than understanding.Enter Wilford McClay's "The Land of Hope" – a refreshingly balanced approach to American history that speaks truth without abandoning hope. McClay doesn't sanitize our past; he clearly states slavery caused the Civil War and vividly depicts the terrorism that crushed Black political participation during Reconstruction. Through powerful storytelling that weaves emotional and intellectual currents together, he treats history not as dates to memorize but as our collective human journey. The book frames American history as a story of striving toward liberty and equality – acknowledging our failures while celebrating our commitment to these principles. As Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of a nation where children would "be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," so too does McClay's approach honor both our painful truths and our highest aspirations. Join us in exploring this balanced perspective as we prepare to celebrate our nation's birthday and commit to understanding our full, complex story. What book has most shaped your understanding of American history?Key Points from the Episode:• US history textbooks have been battlegrounds in culture wars for over a century• The Dunning School dominated 20th century education with narratives that downplayed slavery and romanticized the South• Howard Zinn's "A People's History" overcorrected with a Marxist lens focusing almost exclusively on oppression• "The Land of Hope" by Wilford McClay provides a balanced approach that acknowledges America's failures while celebrating its founding principles• McClay uses narrative storytelling that weaves emotion with intellectual ideas, making history come alive• The book offers nuanced treatment of controversial periods like Reconstruction• America is framed as a nation constantly striving toward ideals of liberty and equality, even when falling shortKeep fighting the good fight.Other resources: Want to leave a review? NL Holmes - Flowers of Evil: Hani's Daughter Mystery Series Book 1. This is episode 743 of Teaching Learning Leading K12.  N.L. Holmes is an award-winning novelist embarking on another significant career phase. Prior to taking up the power of writing and using this pen name, she was an accomplished archaeologist and teacher for 25 years. Early in her career, she served as a nun for two decades. In between, she was an artist and antiques dealer. Yes, she has lived an interesting life and the sum of her experiences informs and inspires her writings today. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical Studies. Holmes, who earned her doctorate in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College despite an offer to attend Princeton, has excavated in Greece and Israel, and also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon. She taught ancient history and humanities at Stockton University in New Jersey and the University of South Florida for many years.  Her ten published novels embrace two series of historical fiction: the Lord Hani Mysteries, set in the Egypt of Akhenaten, and the Empire at Twilight series, featuring life in the Hittite Empire in the 13th century BCE. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!” Holmes resides with her husband and three cats. She splits her time between Tampa, Florida, and northern France, where she gardens, weaves and plays the violin. She also has an adult son. A little about Flowers of Evil When two young women in ancient Egypt open a medical dispensary, they don't expect their first patient to be a dying florist of Amen whose last words are totally mysterious. It's Neferet and Bener-ib's nature to want to appease the ba of the murder victim by finding his killer, and their teenaged apprentice is a born detective. But between the skepticism of their own families and the malice of a rival healer, they find out the simple desire to do the right thing gets them into more trouble than they could have imagined! Our focus is on her book Flowers of Evil: Hani's Daughter Mystery Series Book 1 and a peek at Book 2 - Web of Evil, Book 3 - Wheel of Evil and Book 4 - The Melody of Evil. Exciting stories! Anyway, if what you're after is some vanilla, politically correct fluff—if you're woke or even woke adjacent—this ain't the place for you. If, however, laugh-out-loud escapism is your bag, I'm your guy. The Party Came to A Screeching Halt When I Ended Up in Prison Back in '07, I found myself in hot water over what the good ol' U.S. of A. so eloquently referred to as “financial shenanigans.” And they did whatever it took to convince a jury that I was their Madoff. I've certainly done my fair share of questionable things in life, but I was not the villain in their particular saga. Still…. The universe has a peculiar way of balancing the scales. The boredom in prison was excruciating. So I went to see my case manager, wondering what spectacular moneymaking opportunities might be available. The guy told me, get this, “Well, according to policy, the only thing you really can do is a write book.” He even had the audacity to laugh when he said it. The hell I know about writing? A few months later and blah-blah-solitary confinement-blah, and I thought, Fuck it, let's write a book. And that's where SNIFF began—an action-adventure story about antihero David Liecht, who worked his way to the top of the commercial real estate world, only to lose everything while finding love…and then teeter on the brink of losing that too. Now what will David do? I believe words can be used to create conflict or inspire change; they can cut deep or make you laugh. I choose to laugh, and some people think I'm a damn riot. But I don't expect everyone to be a fan. This is art, baby, and I'm not here to follow the rules. I love writing. It's a passion I discovered while in federal prison. And maybe I ruffle a few feathers along the way, and maybe I don't. Truthfully, I hope you stick around. Let's see what kind of shit we can get into.About the author Because the world was missing a mobile home mogul, Brown became the GM of a manufactured housing retail empire in Dallas, Texas, with greatness in mind as his entrepreneurial spirit couldn't be contained. And he made a killing (literally, maybe) in that niche and then branched out to other various ventures. Buying and selling mobile homes (because who doesn't love a good trailer?); led to flipping houses (before it was en vogue); developing real estate (for the sake of humanity); running nightclubs (where the real magic happens); coding software (because who needs experience?); selling flowers online (the ultimate hustle); serving sushi (raw fish and entrepreneurship go hand-in-hand); and, the pièce de résistance—the African diamond trade (because nothing screams "legit business" like blood diamonds). Shockingly, Brown's financial wizardry didn't quite extend to his tax returns (integrity is overrated). Uncle Sam slapped him with tax evasion, failure to file taxes on time, and wire fraud (just a few minor oversights). When offered a plea deal, Brown, ever the thick-headed rebel, refused to admit defeat (because he'd done nothing wrong in his mind). More charges followed, and, spoiler alert, he blew the trial. And well, let's just say he's now an expert on the federal prison system. “All that glitters ain't gold, folks.” Inspired by a newspaper article that claimed writing a book was the third hardest thing to do (presumably, after escaping from prison and getting a decent haircut behind bars), Brown, the ultimate thrill seeker, decided to take on that ultimate challenge. He was going to pen a novel while serving his sentence (because, why not?).
