This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Archetypes such as the Witch, the Bride, the Mother and Wife, the Jezebel, the Fallen Woman, the Fraud, the Maiden, and the Spinster serve as a form of mediumship to source the deeper meanings in their respective stories. The histories of these specters, which collectively contribute to a larger narrative about the shifting social roles of women in the United States, are vastly different in terms of their backgrounds, social classes, and other circumstances; however, there is one thing that binds them together: the ability to continue to arouse both fascination and fear long after they have passed away. Today, we hear Part Two of our conversation about the haunted history of invisible women on The Grave Talks. When I heard about Karen Witemeyer doing fairy tales in 19th-century Texas, I knew this would be genius. But when I heard about Cloaked in Beauty, a mashup of Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty, her genius took on new proportions. Listen in to see why. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. A girl with a fortune and someone eager to kill her to get it? That might sound familiar, but nope... Witemeyer has taken a whole new take on both fairy tales, and I love it. EEEP! Not only that, but we're looking at at least one more book--based on Beauty and the Beast. And... we got a sneak peek at her next series... The Secret Society of Spinsters. Is that not the most genius idea ever? I can't wait! Cloaked in Beauty by Karen Witemeyer In the heart of the Piney Woods of Texas, Letty Hood has spent the last fifteen years of her life hidden away with her grandmother to escape the deadly schemes of an uncle who wants her dead. Now, with her twenty-first birthday on the horizon, she is forced to accept the escort of a stranger and return to Houston in secret so she can claim a birthright that will make her one of the wealthiest women in Texas. If she lives long enough to inherit. Pinkerton agent Philip Carmichael has one duty: get the Radcliffe heiress home alive. Expecting a spoiled girl, Philip is surprised to encounter a woman of rare strength with a kind soul and keen wit. As they journey together, Letty's resilience wins his admiration, breaking through his hardened cynicism. Yet the threat to Letty grows more menacing with every mile, and Philip fears that keeping her out of harm's way may be just as impossible as keeping her out of his heart. "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Sleeping Beauty" entwine for a romantic fairy tale retelling that explores the power of true love conquering even the darkest of nights. You can learn more about Karen Witemeyer and her books on her WEBSITE. Don't forget the book is 40% off with FREE US shipping until 12/16/24 on BakerBookHouse.com. Whenever Teresa Lim asked about a striking woman she saw in old family photos, she was told 'That's Aunt Fanny; she was unfortunate.' So naturally, Teresa Lim spent years excavating Aunt Fanny's life in 1920s Singapore. It's a story of three devoted sisters, ghost husbands, working-class Chinese feminists, and sworn spinsters. Turns out, Fanny was very fortunate indeed...until History arrived at her front door. _________________________ You can buy Teresa Lim's The Interpreter's Daughter and benefit a local indie bookshop HERE Music in this episode was by: The Butterfly Lovers Concerto for violin performed by Takako Nishizaki Doug Maxwell: Honky Tonkin'; Lao Tsu Erhu Gene Kardos' Orchestra: My Extraordinary Gal, 1932 Yao Lie: Rose Rose I Love You Kevin MacLeod: Medusa; March of the Mind; Despair and Triumph Jesse Gallagher: Thin Places Learn more about your ad choices. THE TWO SPINSTERS, 9min., Italy Directed by Ugo Lanzotti, Roberta Pia De Angelis Two ladies have been living together for many years. One of them, Maria, has to face an old family hostility for having chosen to live love… https://www.instagram.com/roberta_de_angelis Get to know filmmaker Roberta Pia De Angelis: This film was born as a final project at our university last year. What we wanted to tell was a homosexual story but in a different way. What motivated us to write this story, as it has been written, was to show how love has no age or gender. However, as in most cases, it is not always easy to follow your heart and feelings, especially when the people you loved most during your life did not support you in your choices. Hello listeners!! Welcome to Season 2!! Its been over a year since we've posted a research-based episode, but we're finally back on our bullshit! We have been dying to get back to y'all to share the plethora of topics bouncing around our brains. This episode is very special, for it is the first time that Maria and Gen combine research efforts on the same topic - Paganism/Witchcraft. While Maria dives into the history of witchery and related shenanigans, Gen explores the resurging interest in paganism and it's cultural significance. Special thanks to James Kull for our new intro music :) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wonderbingepod/message
