Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy (and their musical friends) have definitely tapped into something with this "play R.E.M." thing. Mike & Jason originally started this exercise by playing album sets of some of their favorite artists like Neil Young, The Modern Lovers, The Smiths and more. But when they picked out Murmur by R.E.M. in 2023, the whole concept took off in a big way. After playing Fables of the Reconstruction last year, they are heading out on a big tour playing Lifes Rich Pageant. Both shows at the Metro in Chicago are sold out, but there are plenty of other dates available, including a September show at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago. Today's episode brings together two extraordinary creatives whose work has helped shape contemporary culture through a shared commitment to curiosity, counterculture, and championing unique voices. Ceri is joined by sisters Francesca Gavin and Seana Gavin, each working across different mediums but united by a belief in following instinct and staying close to what feels urgent and alive. Francesca is one of the most influential figures shaping how contemporary art is written about and presented today. She is Director of Visual Arts at Murmur, Editor-in-Chief of EPOCH, and a regular contributor to publications including the Financial Times. Her curatorial work spans major international contexts, from co-curating Manifesta 11 in Zurich to exhibitions at institutions such as Somerset House and the Palais de Tokyo. She is the author of eleven books on art and visual culture and has hosted Rough Version on NTS Radio for the past nine years, exploring the intersections of art and music. Seana is a London-based artist working primarily in collage, creating dreamlike worlds from vintage photographic material where past and future collide. Her work has been exhibited internationally, from Somerset House and the Serralves Foundation to the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm, with solo shows in Paris and London. Alongside this, her work features in major publications, brand collaborations, and collections including Soho House worldwide. Her photography monograph Spiralled, published by IDEA Books, is now in its fourth edition. In this conversation, they talk about creative longevity, instinct, and how to build a practice that remains porous, rigorous, and true over time. KEY TAKEAWAYS Creative longevity isn't about having a perfect plan. It's about staying close to what you're genuinely curious about, paying attention to what keeps returning in your life, and trusting those repetitions enough to follow them. Work becomes more resilient when different strands feed one another - writing into curating, music into thinking, collage into archives, archives back into books and shows. BEST MOMENTS “For me, personally, originality is that unique point of view or something fresh that they're saying - there's often a spirit in there that you can sense in the way something's been made.” ““It's very intuitive. It's almost like I'm going into a meditative state… I gather up lots of material that might fit in with that imaginary world… and then something starts to happen.” RESOURCES https://www.presentfuture.be https://www.francescagavin.com https://www.instagram.com/seanagavin https://murmur.earth HOST BIO With over 35 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, accomplished producers and performers on their own, came together to produce one of rock's greatest debut albums, R.E.M.'s Murmur. That 1983 classic plus the preceding, Easter-produced EP, Chronic Town, have gotten the all-analog, One Step treatment in a numbered, limited-edition vinyl release from Interscope-Capitol's Definitive Sound Series. We reunited Easter and Dixon to discuss the making of Murmur plus the follow-up they produced, Reckoning. What did they each bring to the process? Why does one of them consider Murmur to be the Dark Side of the Moon of the New Wave era? What had changed by the time they recorded Reckoning? Easter also talks about working again with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills on the latest Baseball Project album, and Easter and Dixon offer details about Murmur that even this longtime R.E.M. fanatic found revelatory. This composition is a multi-layered synth improvisation, reacting in real time to the sounds of the breaking waves and calling birds in the field recording. Listening through to the full recording four or five times to immerse myself in the location, I then responded live to the recording on three passes with three separate synth sounds, allowing the emotions I felt listening to the recording to guide the performance, instead of a formal structure. The title comes from the poem by druidic bard Amergin Glangel: “I am the Wind that blows across the Sea I am the Wave of the Ocean I am the Murmur of the Billows I am the Bull of the Seven Combats I am the Vulture on the Rock I am a Ray of the Sun I am the Fairest of Flowers I am a Wild Boar in Valour I am a Salmon in the Pool I am a Lake on the Plain I am the Skill of the Craftsman I am a Word of Science I am the Spear-point that gives Battle I am the god who creates in the head of man the Fire of Thought. Who is it that Enlightens the Assembly upon the mountain, if not I? Who tells the ages of the moon, if not I? Who shows the place where the sun goes to rest, if not I? Who calls the cattle from the House of Tethra? On whom do the cattle of Tethra smile? Who is the god that fashions enchantments - the enchantment of battle and the wind of change?" Breaking waves at Tarskavaig, Scotland reimagined by Cities and Memory.

R.E.M. blieben erfolgreich. Bonus Episode #55 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan re-enters the fog in Silent Hill f. After thirteen years of waiting, Silent Hill returns with a bold new entry that trades American decay for 1960s rural Japan. In this comprehensive review, we delve into Silent Hill f, exploring how developer NeoBards Entertainment and writer Ryukishi07 have reimagined the legendary horror franchise. From the fog-shrouded streets of Ebisugaoka to the nightmarish Otherworld shrine complex, we examine every aspect of protagonist Hinako Shimizu's harrowing journey through psychological terror, toxic relationships, and unwanted transformation. This episode features an extensive breakdown of the game's stunning soundtrack, composed by Silent Hill veteran Akira Yamaoka alongside Kensuke Inage, Dai, and Xaki. We discuss how Yamaoka infuses his signature industrial sound with Japanese essence, and how Inage corrupts traditional gagaku court music into something nightmarish. We also cover the game's atmospheric presentation, melee-focused combat system, cultural symbolism, technical performance on PC, and whether this risky departure from series tradition successfully captures what makes Silent Hill special. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share! R.E.M. werden zu internationalen Rockstars. Michael Stipe entwickelt sich vom schüchternen Sänger zur charismatischen Bühnenpersönlichkeit. „Automatic For The People“ hieß das Album, mit dem R.E.M. Mitte der 1990er Jahre ihren Welterfolg noch ausbauen konnte. Große Konzerte auf monatelangen Tourneen zeigten dies eindrucksvoll. Die Band konnte und wollte aber nicht weiter Lieder zum Mitpfeifen und eingängige Balladen liefern, sondern künstlerisch vorankommen. CardioNerds (Dr. Rick Ferraro and Dr. Dan Ambinder) join Dr. Sahar Samimi and Dr. Lorraine Mascarenhas from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, at the Houston Rodeo for some tasty Texas BBQ and a tour of the lively rodeo grounds to discuss an interesting case full of clinical pearls involving a patient with nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE). Expert commentary is provided by Dr. Basant Arya. Episode audio was edited by CardioNerds Intern Dr. Bhavya Shah. (Photo by Xu Jianmei/Xinhua via Getty Images)Xinhua News Agency via Getty Images We discuss a case of a 38-year-old woman with advanced endometrial cancer who presents with acute abdominal pain, found to have splenic and renal infarcts, severe aortic regurgitation, and persistently negative blood cultures, ultimately diagnosed with nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE). We review the definition and pathophysiology of NBTE in the context of malignancy and hypercoagulability, discuss initial evaluation and echocardiographic findings, and highlight important management considerations. Emphasis is placed on the complexities of anticoagulation choice, the role of valvular surveillance, and the need for coordinated, multidisciplinary care.   US Cardiology Review is now the official journal of CardioNerds! Pearls- Nonbacterial Thrombotic Endocarditis Eliminate the Usual Suspects. NBTE is a diagnosis of exclusion! Always rule out infective endocarditis (IE) first with serial blood cultures and serologic tests.  More than Meets the Echo. Distinguishing NBTE from culture-negative endocarditis can be tricky. Look beyond the echo—focus on clinical context (underlying malignancy, autoimmune issues) and lab findings to clinch the diagnosis.  TEE for the Win... Mostly. While TEE is more sensitive than TTE, NBTE vegetations can be sneaky and may embolize quickly. Don't hesitate to use advanced imaging (i.e., cardiac MRI, CTA) or repeat imaging if you still suspect NBTE.  Choose your champion. In cancer-associated NBTE, guideline recommendations for anticoagulation choice are lacking. Consider DOACs and LMWH as agents of choice, but ultimately use shared decision-making to guide management.  No obvious trigger? Go hunting for hidden malignancies or autoimmune disorders. A thorough workup is essential to uncover the driving force behind NBTE.  Check out this state-of-the-art review for a comprehensive, one-stop summary of NBTE: European Heart Journal, 46(3), 236–245. Please note that the figures and tables referenced in the following notes are adapted from this review.  notes- Nonbacterial Thrombotic Endocarditis Notes were drafted by Dr. Sahar Samimi.  What is nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE)?   NBTE, previously known as marantic endocarditis, is a rare condition in which sterile vegetations form on heart valves.1  It occurs most commonly in association with malignancies and autoimmune conditions (i.e, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome or systemic lupus erythematosus).1 In addition, NBTE has been reported in association with COVID-19 infection, burns, sepsis, and indwelling catheters.2  Precise mechanisms remain unclear, but an interplay of endothelial injury, hypercoagulability, hypoxia, and immune complex deposition contributes to the formation of these sterile vegetations. 1  How do we diagnose NBTE?  Physicians should have a high level of suspicion for NBTE in at-risk patients (e.g., with active malignancy) who present with recent or recurrent embolic events (i.e., stroke, splenic, renal, or mesenteric infarct, and acute coronary syndrome).1

Murmur of Rain is a Gothic-tinged historical romance set in France and Haiti in the 1890s by Patricia Vaughn. Lauren Dufort is the daughter of a descendent of enslaved people in French Guiana and a white Frenchman. Her parents were deeply in love, but their marriage estranged them from society, so when Lauren is orphaned as a teen, she is raised by her paternal aunt, Claude, who runs a gentleman's club, knowing that her mixed-race identity may keep her from ever making a love match in 19th century France. But when handsome Haitian Roget de Martier arrives at Claude's club, Lauren is immediately smitten and he seems to reciprocate interests. There are hints of secrets about his past and family in Haiti, but when the rich gentleman proposes marriage instead of a mistress arrangement, Lauren's head and heart both feel like this is her best chance at happiness.Support us on our Patreon!Visit our website for transcripts and show notes: reformedrakes.comFollow us on social media:Twitter: @reformedrakesInstagram: @reformedrakesBluesky: @reformedrakesBeth's SubstackChels' SubstackEmma's SubstackThank you for listening!

And suddenly from heaven there came asound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. By 1985, REM had carved out a following both in their home base of Athens, GA and at colleges and indie radio stations around the US. Their first two albums Murmur and Reckoning gave them a foothold as they learned how to craft songs and play live. But they were ready to take the next step so instead of retreating to North Carolina where they'd recorded their first two albums, they went to London to broaden their horizons and up their songwriting and recording game. Because REM had grown into a solid live band, some songs were worked out on the road like their classic travel song Driver 8. But they also sought inspiration from some of the odd characters they encountered in Athens and around the South with songs like Wendell Gee, Life And How To Live It and Old Man Kensey. They also drew from their travels to create some great road songs like Can't Get There From Here, Maps & Legends and Feeling Gravity's Pull. Guitarist Peter Buck does his jangly best here while breaking out a little banjo in spots. Mike Mills not only locks down the bass but provides harmonies and counterpoints to Michael Stipes desperate and personal lyrics. This album would portend the next two REM records - Life's Rick Pageant and Document - both favorites of The Wolf. While the band would go onto become multi-platinum international pop superstars in the 90s, this album saw the band not ready to become that big but ready to take the next step in their journey. It's a fun one to dive into as it turns 40! Maureen Stanton's new memoir, The Murmur of Everything Moving (Columbus State University 2025) opens when she was in her early twenties, working at a bar saving for a backpacking trip through Europe. She meets and falls for Steve, an electrician who at 27 is the father of three children going through a divorce. They are deeply in love, now back in Michigan close to Steve's children, when he's diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer that has metastasized throughout his body. In beautiful prose, Stanton describes the medical challenges, Steve's physical and psychological pain, and the heartache they face knowing that his time is limited while trying to defy the odds. This is a moving story of human fragility, resilience, and the different forms love can take. Maureen Stanton is also the author of Body Leaping Backward: Memoir of a Delinquent Girlhood, winner of a Maine Literary Award and a People Magazine "Best Books Pick"; and Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: An Insider's Look at the World of Flea Markets, Antiques, and Collecting, winner of a Massachusetts Book Award and a Parade Magazine "12 Great Summer Books" selection. Creative storytelling bridges worlds in this special episode where I speak with acclaimed Mexican novelist Sofía Segovia, author of the internationally celebrated book "The Murmur of Bees." Our conversation explores the fascinating parallels between writing novels and creating music - from creative discipline and narrative techniques to building an international audience and adapting to changing industries. This interview had personal significance as Segovia's novel is set in Linares, Mexico. Linares was the birthplace of my father in 1922, creating a powerful connection that became even more meaningful after my recent journey to Mexican citizenship. Segovia shares insights from her evolution as a ghostwriter to an acclaimed international author, how she balances creative output with teaching writing workshops, and her experience bringing Mexican stories to global audiences. Whether you are a musician, writer, or creative entrepreneur, you'll find valuable wisdom in Segovia's journey about the universal elements that help creative work resonate across cultural boundaries. Beauty and the Beat Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine It's not quite right to say that the Go-Go's' 1981 debut, Beauty and the Beat, is where new wave caught hold in the U.S., but it's not quite wrong, either. Prior to this, there had certainly been new wave hits -- Blondie had been reaching the Top Ten for two years running -- but the Go-Go's ushered in the era of big, bright stylish pop, spending six weeks at the top of the U.S. charts and generating two singles that defined the era: the cool groove of “Our Lips Are Sealed” and the exuberant “We Got the Beat.” So big were these two hits that they sometimes suggested that Beauty and the Beat was a hits-and-filler record, an impression escalated by the boost the Go-Go's received from the just-launched MTV, yet that's hardly the case. Beauty and the Beat is sharp, clever, and catchy, explicitly drawing from the well of pre-Beatles ‘60s pop -- girl group harmonies, to be sure, but surf-rock echoes throughout -- but filtering it through the nervy energy of punk. With the assistance of Rob Freeman, producer Richard Gottehrer -- a veteran of the Strangeloves (“I Want Candy”) who also wrote the girl group standard “My Boyfriend's Back” -- sanded down the band's rougher edges, keeping the emphasis on the hooks and harmonies but giving the Go-Go's enough kick and jangle that at times the group resembles nothing less than early R.E.M., particularly on “How Much More” and “Tonite.” But this isn't Murmur; there is nothing murky about Beauty and the Beat at all -- this is infectiously cheerful pop, so hooky it's sometimes easy to overlook how well-written these tunes are, but it's the sturdiness of the songs that makes Beauty and the Beat a new wave classic.
