This week we're diving into Todd Field's first film in over 16 years: the searing, thorny Tár. We talk about the film's timely themes, its surprising humor, and the towering performances by Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss. A portrait of a woman undone by the ego of her own genius, Tár is one of the year's most talked about films.
Part 1: Zach and Andrew talk about movies they saw this week, including: Confess, Fletch, The Menu, The Banshees of Inisherin, Tar and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.Part 2 (47:50): The group continues their Films by Ernst Lubitsch series with 1942's To Be or Not to Be.See movies discussed in this episode here.Don't want to listen? CIB returns after a brief Thanksgiving-imposed hiatus to yap about why it's never the parents' fault except when it's definitely the parents' fault, who to definitely-not-racistly root for in the World Cup, and a story on Marketplace neatly shows how some people work to solve inefficiencies in the market while others limply wish the world was a different, better place. All that along with plenty of other diversions and silliness, including a brief STATE OF THE PODCAST discussion at the end. Listen, if you must! On the one hundred and ninety-eighth episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST the crew will need their own whale allegory if this episode goes any longer. We review the awards frontrunner, Cate Blanchett vehicle, TAR. We pair that cheekily with a film from Hungarian director Bela Tarr, the enigmatic modern classic, WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES. Ostentatious is an adjective that means characterized by vulgar or pretentious display. Our word of the day comes from the Latin word ostentare (OS ten TAR ay) which means ‘to show or display.' Entering English in the mid 15th century, our word of the day is often used to describe the tendency to show or display one's wealth a little too much. For my tastes, Jill can get a little showy when it comes to decorating her home. I mean, it's one thing to have one's walls covered in fancy wallpaper, but having your dog's house wallpapered is downright ostentatious.
Our latest guest critic is Peter Freeman with D.C. Outlook. We discuss lots of shows & movies including Avitar: The Way of Water, Triangle of Sadness, The Menu, Tar, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Emily the Criminal, The Silent Twins, A Christmas Story Christmas and more. What a weird one! Today the queers discuss the lost and found British curiosity starring Edward Woodward, 1981's The Appointment. They take a lot of detours along the way including legos vs. lincoln logs, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, UHF, Luis Bunuel, Tar, and Coal Miner's Daughter. From BFI: "Joanne, a gifted 14-year old violinist, is upset when her father, Ian, tells her he has to break their appointment and will not be able to attend her end of term concert. That night, Ian has a nightmare in which, in a remote valley, three black dogs jump on his car, making it crash. The next day this comes true and Ian is killed. Back home, the 'remote and dream-like' Joanne is seen contentedly playing with the three dogs."This is a hard one to find. Ospite: Gianni Trovati, Sole 24 Ore.

Big Gulps, huh? Alright...well, why you're here, you might as well get comfy, settle down for a spell, and catch up with old friends. This edition of Overlapping Dialogue has us hitting the highway for two road classics, Stranger Than Paradise & Dumb and Dumber! But before we arrive there, we take a few detours with a Blue Plate Special discussion of the surprisingly adequate Halloween Ends, the wickedly talented (iykyk) The Devils, and the considered brilliance of Tár, Todd Field's long awaited return to filmmaking. This week's duo is just as offbeat and eclectic: listen as we discuss Jim Jarmusch's 1984 portrait of hipster malaise, the Farrelly Brother's 1994 idiotic odyssey, and the curious connections both films have in depicting the joys and pitfalls inherent to the open road. "Scream" has always been a franchise of final girls. Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers are two of the most consistent, quality characters in any horror franchise of all time. They are legendary for not having one, uninterrupted, consecutive character arc without their storyline ever. Most "Scream" fans assume they are the final girls of all final girls. In today's episode, the Showersheads put the Scream Queens up against the likes of the other top tier final girls in the cinematic landscape: Laurie Strode from "Halloween," Ellen Ripley from "Alien," and Nancy Thompson from "A Nightmare on Elm Street." In addition, each of the Patreon guests highlights one other final girl that stands out as special to their brand of horror. To conclude the episode, Ryan is joined by Michael Schwartz to briefly discuss and review Todd Field's new film “Tar” starring Cate Blanchett. Todd Field is back, and so are we. In his first film since Little Children in 2006, the acclaimed director is already taking Oscar season by storm with TÁR, a psychological drama starring Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár, one of the most interesting movie characters of the year. We kick off the show this week with some big news, and no not just about pizza wars. We also catch up on some of the films we've seen lately and what we're hoping to catch by week's end. We're not exactly podcasting maestros, but at least we know how to compose ourselves. This week, Grace and Ariel cover TAR. The post TAR Movie Review appeared first on PostShowRecaps.com.
The abuse of power and resulting fall from grace in Todd Field's new TAR put us in mind of another cautionary tale of entitlement and bad behavior, in the form of 1988's DANGEROUS LIAISONS. So this week we're revisiting Stephen Frears' lush, lavish depiction of not-so-secret affairs among the French aristocracy to consider what keeps this 17th-century period piece from feeling stodgy, the cruel intentions at work in its many romantic pairings, and what distinguishes its final shot as one of the all-time greats. Plus, listeners bring some of their own interpretation and insight to our recent pairing of BRIEF ENCOUNTER and DECISION TO LEAVE. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about DANGEROUS LIAISONS, TAR, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to email@example.com, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
