True Thirty 30: Trump's $1.776B IRS Leak Settlement and the Anti-Weaponization Fund. Host Joey Dumont and producer Sean X discuss a reported $1.776B settlement stemming from Donald Trump's January lawsuit over 405,000 leaked tax records tied to IRS leaker Charles Littlejohn (now imprisoned). They argue the leak occurred under Trump's own first administration, yet the settlement is funded by taxpayers and structured as an “Anti-Weaponization Fund” controlled by a five-member panel chosen by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche (Trump's former personal attorney), with minimal oversight, secrecy allowed, and no appeal or judicial review. They note a judge questioned whether the case was even a valid case or controversy and suggest the government “settled with itself.” They also claim the settlement was expanded to bar future IRS audits or investigations of Trump, his family, and business for past filings, raising concerns about conflicts of interest, legality, and potential payouts to January 6 defendants.00:00 Welcome and Setup00:34 The Tax Leak Lawsuit02:11 Todd Blanche Conflict03:55 Judge Questions Standing04:59 Settlement and Slush Fund06:08 Secret Board Control07:37 Who Gets Paid09:28 Legal Risks and Signatures12:22 Pardons and Incentives18:31 Conservative Reactions21:23 Fund Timeline and Grift22:30 Wrap Up and Next Steps This is a public episode. Today's Headlines: Trump touched down in Beijing for his Xi Jinping summit — greeted by a military band and hundreds of children waving flags — while Elon Musk technically skipped his own OpenAI trial to attend as emotional support, despite the judge explicitly not excusing him. On the Iran war, US intelligence assessed that Iran still has operational access to 30 of its 33 missile sites and about 70% of its prewar missile stockpile, which is not what "totally obliterated" means, and for the seventh time Senate Democrats tried to advance a war powers resolution to force a congressional vote on Iran and for the seventh time it failed. On the domestic front, the DOJ is discussing settling Trump's personal tax return lawsuit for up to $10 billion in taxpayer money — potentially including dropping all audits of Trump, his family, and his businesses — while the FBI has been running an internal "payback squad" of agents handling cases against Trump's political enemies out of off-site locations for over a year. Trump got his preferred Fed chair with Kevin Warsh confirmed 54-45, the narrowest margin in modern history, and the White House is planning 250 pardons to celebrate America's 250th birthday because of course it is. On the redistricting front, Louisiana senators stayed up all night to advance a map eliminating one of the state's two majority-Black districts, and South Carolina's governor called a special session specifically to pass a new map eliminating Jim Clyburn's seat with a simple majority instead of the usual two-thirds vote. Alligator Alcatraz is closing after costing Florida hundreds of millions in under a year, and Alex Murdaugh's murder convictions were unanimously overturned by South Carolina's Supreme Court after it emerged the court clerk told jurors not to be "fooled" by him — before writing a book about the trial. Hawk walks through Jonathan V. Last's newsletter from The Bulwark, titled "Political Violence Breaks Containment," which traces Trump's pattern from encouraging rally-goers to punch protesters in 2016, to excusing Charlottesville, to the January 6th Capitol insurrection, to pardoning convicted violent offenders and even placing one inside the DOJ. The same administration that published what JVL calls snuff films, threatened genocide against the Iranian people, and called political opponents vermin and enemies of the state is now incredulous that political violence has turned in its direction. The shooter, Cole Thomas Allen, a teacher and engineer who checked into the hotel a day before the event with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, found virtually no security in place. He sent a manifesto to family members roughly 10 minutes before the attack, outlining his targets, his rules of engagement, and his reasoning, rooted in rage at the current administration. Hawk also covers why trust in this White House's version of events has completely collapsed, on both sides of the political spectrum, because of years of disinformation, QAnon, Pizzagate, and compulsive lying. Even Trump's own base no longer believes the official narrative coming out of the administration. The Epstein files, the rhetoric, the pardons, the violence. It all connects. Finally, James Bruns, founding director of the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum, discussed his book “Delivering for America: How the United States Postal Service Built a Nation.” Bruns reflected on the 250th anniversary of the USPS and the crucial role the postal system has played in connecting communities and shaping American history. Today's Headlines: Everything JD Vance touched this weekend turned to dust. Viktor Orban — MAGA's model autocrat and Putin's most reliable EU ally — was swept out of power in Hungary's election, with opposition leader Peter Magyar's Tisza party winning 135 of 199 parliamentary seats. Vance had flown to Budapest days earlier to campaign for Orban. Then Vance's Iran peace talks in Pakistan collapsed without a deal, and he left. Within hours Trump was threatening to blockade the Strait of Hormuz and bomb Iran's water treatment facilities, while Marco Rubio watched UFC with Trump and Joe Rogan in Miami. Iran said "if you fight, we fight." Meanwhile, the economy is quietly getting ugly. GDP growth in Q4 2025 came in at a 0.5% annualized rate. Inflation jumped to 3.3% in March — the highest in two years, up from 2.4% in February — driven largely by gas prices. Pawn shops across the country are reporting a surge in loan demand and customers selling valuables outright, with both major publicly traded pawn operators trading at five-year highs. The White House ballroom, meanwhile, will be built with $37 million in foreign steel donated by a Luxembourg company — right as Trump cuts their tariff rates in half. Trump has allegedly promised mass pardons to anyone who came "within 200 feet of the Oval." The White House called it a joke. In other news, A former Army employee was arrested and indicted for leaking accounts of sexual harassment and gender discrimination at Fort Bragg to a journalist — Kash Patel celebrated her arrest on Twitter as a warning to "would-be leakers." Anthropic is releasing its powerful new Mythos model — which can find security vulnerabilities human developers can't — to a coalition of 40 companies anyway. The FTC is suing three states for trying to regulate prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket using anti-gambling laws. And finally, Eric Swalwell dropped out of California's governor's race after CNN and the SF Chronicle reported misconduct allegations from four women, including two incidents of sexual assault. His staff quit, 45 former staffers signed a letter calling for his resignation, and the Manhattan DA opened an investigation. The House is reportedly considering a vote to expel him alongside Republican Tony Gonzalez.  Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode:  Time: Hungary's Viktor Orbán, Icon of the Far Right, Loses Election. DISCLAIMER: This episode was recorded on January 28th, 2026. Jeffrey Toobin cuts through the political noise to examine one of the most revealing powers a president holds: the pardon. From Gerald Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon to Trump's loyalty-driven clemency decisions, Toobin explores what these choices say about presidential character and the justice system. He tackles the Democratic Party's urgent need for a positive agenda beyond anti-Trump messaging, addresses immigration myths, and raises red flags about election fairness. Yet Toobin closes with a message of hope — highlighting capitalism's role in driving green energy solutions and the dramatic reduction of global poverty as signs that progress is still possible. Be sure to check out the On Brand with Donny Deutsch YouTube page. Takeaways Jeffrey Toobin emphasizes the significance of presidential pardons in revealing a president's character. He critiques Gerald Ford's pardon of Nixon as a miscalculation that did not help the country move on from Watergate. Toobin highlights the transactional nature of Trump's pardons, often based on personal loyalty rather than justice. He notes that the Democratic Party needs a positive agenda beyond just opposing Trump. Toobin points out that many undocumented immigrants are law-abiding citizens contributing to society. He expresses concern about the fairness of upcoming elections and potential political hijinks. Toobin believes that the capitalist system will ultimately lead to cleaner energy solutions. He acknowledges the significant reduction in global poverty over the past two decades. Despite current challenges, Toobin remains optimistic about the future. He encourages a focus on substantive issues rather than just political opposition. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

SEASON 4 EPISODE 52: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: It's the Big Lie Redux. Trump appears to be planning some kind of SHOW TRIALS over the 2020 Election - and Nicolas Maduro might be his key “witness." He let it slip at the World Economic Forum yesterday. He told the audience in Davos that he will be prosecuting people over the 2020 Election. Never mind that there's nothing to prosecute anybody for; never mind that he lost; never mind that this has already been through the courts: "It was a rigged election. Everybody now knows that. They found out. People will soon be prosecuted for what they did. That's probably breaking news." In the last week, he has twice insisted Joe Biden and his administration ‘should be arrested’ and he has now said "we caught 'em." In his fugue state News Conference Tuesday, Trump had a question planted about ‘finding things out’ from Maduro about 2020. And Maduro's role in some nonsensical conspiracy theory may be the real reason Trump had Maduro renditioned from Venezuela – not drugs. Regardless: all the tea leaves suggest Trump is going to roll out the Big Lie again, this time perhaps with a phony confession from Maduro in exchange for a pardon or something. Trump is insane and desperate, so now he will actually try to focus the Department of Justice and all elected Republicans on prosecuting Biden and others. You think his Greenland Clown Show is crazy? You think his terrorism in Minnesota is crazy? You ain’t seen nothing yet. And god help us if it gets any traction. If media pushback were insufficient to counter the tsunami of propaganda Trump and his criminal gangs could generate, he might try to use the subsequent unrest as an excuse to interfere with the midterms or even rationalize violating the constitution and seeking another term. B-Block (32:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Anchors Aweight, Buffalo Bills' owner Terry Pegula, who has fired his coach even though he thinks Sean McDermott did an "admiral" job. Then there's Labor Secretary Lori Chavez DeRemer and the accusations of an affair with a staffer on the public dime. She's chosen to be represented by a lawyer named Dr. Nick. And then there are America's two most overrated journalists Jim "What Is A Woman?" VandeHei, and Anderson "You Really Think Trump Is Insane?" Cooper and yes they each actually asked those questions this week. C-Block (45:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: How different was flying nearly half a century ago? There we were, the president of Cornell University and I, waiting to board a plane from New York to Ithaca and there they were, two airline employees, trying to fix a problem in the undercarriage by stuffing paper towels up into it. Hunter Biden is an American attorney, businessman, and author and the son of President Joe Biden. Born in Delaware and shaped by profound personal tragedies and a diverse career in finance, policy, and international ventures. His mother and sister passed away in a car accident when he was young, and his brother, who survived the accident, later passed at age 46 from brain cancer. Married to Melissa Cohen, with whom he has one child. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Georgetown University and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, before working briefly as a Jesuit volunteer in Portland, Oregon, and transitioning into banking and politics. Biden built his early career at MBNA America, then served at the United States Department of Commerce, focusing on e-commerce policy during the Clinton administration. In 2001, he co-founded the lobbying firm Oldaker, Biden & Belair, which worked on issues including online gambling. He served as a board member of Amtrak and is a founding partner of Rosemont Seneca Partners, an investment and advisory firm. He previously was on the board of BHR Partners, a China-based private equity firm, and from 2014 to 2019, he served on the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian energy company owned by Mykola Zlochevsky, amid political investigations. In 2013, Biden joined the U.S. Navy Reserve as an ensign, but was discharged in 2014. Biden has publicly admitted to struggles with addiction, detailed in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things, and has been sober since 2019. He faced public controversies, including the 2018 laptop scandal, and was under federal criminal investigation for tax matters and firearm possession. In 2024, he pleaded guilty to failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019 on foreign income, which he spent on drugs and luxuries. In April 2025, President Joe Biden issued a pardon clearing Hunter of his federal gun and tax convictions. Biden continues to advocate for awareness of addiction through his personal story of recovery and resilience.
