This week, we're diving into something that seems simple but holds a lot of power in your relationship: touch. Whether it's a lingering hug, a soft shoulder squeeze, or just holding hands while watching Netflix — physical touch is one of the most important (and underrated) ways to build connection, intimacy, and trust. But if you've found yourselves touching less — or if touch feels off somehow — you're not alone. We asked our audience, and: 47% said they want more touch 37% said they want better touch In this episode, we're breaking down why touch is so essential — and why so many couples stop doing it. (Spoiler: it's not just about sex.) Plus, we're giving you practical tools and one super simple free exercise (takes 5 minutes) to start reconnecting through touch today.

In a culture that preaches tolerance (unless you're a Christian), how do we hold fast to our convictions without shrinking back? In today's episode, Lindsey Maestas unpacks the truth that the Gospel is offensive...and that's exactly why it saves. We're in a world facing a mental health crisis, a loneliness epidemic, and a deep spiritual emptiness. People are desperately searching for meaning, and yet, the one truth that could set them free is often silenced in the name of comfort or people-pleasing. Lindsey explores what it means to live boldly and compassionately, asking: What if we had said something? What if we had shown up before they spiraled? What if one hard conversation could have kept someone from self-harm or hopelessness? We can't live in the “what ifs.” The Gospel is meant to be shared; we were never called to water it down for our comfort. If we say we believe it, our actions have to reflect the truth we claim. But if we're speaking truth, our lives must follow the calling found in Scripture. You'll hear: Why the Gospel will always offend culture...and why that's good news. How our silence can cost someone their soul. What it means to live boldly in a post-Christian world. A reminder that truth without love is harsh, but love without truth is hollow.

Dante now walks with the skeletal gluttons who have God's writing on their faces.Along the way, there are increasingly complex and almost gaming literary references that litter the text until Dante the pilgrim suddenly is recognized by a fellow, contemporary, vernacular poet who is not known for any high style but is instead a champion of a low, vulgar poetry in this hip, new form of the sonnet.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we look into the mirror of an increasingly complex meta reality in COMEDY as Dante the pilgrim meets his friend and rival Forese Donati on the sixth terrace of Mount Purgatory. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:22] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXIII, lines 28 - 48. If you'd like to read along or continue the conversation with me in the comment section at the bottom of the page, please find the entry for this episode on my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:23] Internal thoughts--less revelatory than just rehearsed--about the siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE.[09:27] The potential blasphemy of the pelican in her piety.[12:50] Three references to other texts in increasing opacity: from Dante's VITA NUOVA, from Ovid's METAMORPHOSES, and from Josephus' history (sort of).[15:30] Starved enough to see God's writing in the human face: a felix culpa?[21:31] A misplaced tercet in COMEDY?[22:52] Forese Donati and Dante v. Statius and Virgil.[31:18] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXIII, lines 28 - 48.
Our pilgrim must move beyond the mystical tree on the sixth terrace of Mount Purgatory. So he sets off behind Virgil and Statius, only to overtaken by a group of cadaverous, skeletal penitents, whose hollow eyes watch the pilgrim's slower journey. This passage is an interesting set of problems: low stylists which end up with Ovidian references, all tied up in the very real medieval problem of starvation.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we work through this passage of camaraderie, mentorship, and growing affection on the terrace of gluttony. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:13] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXIII, lines 1 - 27. If you'd like to read along or start a conversation with me and others about this passage, please find the entry for this episode on my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:19] Camaraderie and mentorship in a lower style with a final salvo at avarice.[11:34] A psalm fragment in Latin and a possible quibble about Virgil's character.[16:26] Pensive pilgrims, right out of the VITA NUOVA, Dante's earlier work.[20:05] Ovid's METAMORPHOSES as a source for hunger: cited thoroughly and then overwritten beyond its ending.[25:04] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XXIII, lines 1 - 27.

This week on Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Andrea Taylor and Mark Wright tackle the urgent issue of deep funding cuts to scientific research in the United States. Dr. Cooper shares firsthand insight on how these changes are affecting patient care and scientific integrity, highlighting the pressures researchers face—including censorship and loss of resources at institutions like the NIH. The conversation sheds light on how misinformation, government interference, and reduced diversity in studies threaten the future of metabolic, cancer and public health research. Listeners will better understand why research matters for everyday health, and what's at stake when critical projects lose funding.Key Takeaways:Sweeping research cuts at major institutions like NIH jeopardize progress in areas like metabolic health, cancer, ALS, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.Researchers are facing censorship and pressure to alter or suppress scientific findings in nutrition, autism, and vaccine research.Reducing diversity in research undermines scientific accuracy and inclusivity, risking treatments that don't address the needs of all populations.Slashed funding will stall new medical discoveries, limit future treatment options, and may have consequences for decades to come.Misinformation around vaccines and public health is rising as government agencies are pressured to alter or hide true scientific data.Resources:Links: Current Medical ReportingVin Gupta, MD Nutrition InformationNutrition for Mortals Podcast with Dietitians: Matt and Jen Infectious Diseases, ImmunizationsMaria Van Kerkhove - WHOJeff DuchinMichael Osterholm, CIDRAP Kevin Hall ResearchKevin Hall on LinkedIn Connect with Dr. Emily Cooper on LinkedIn.Connect with Mark Wright on LinkedIn.Connect with Andrea Taylor on Instagram.Fat Science is a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won't go and stay away. Pontiac's War: Fire on the Frontier, Peace in the ShadowsIn 1763, as British flags replaced French ones across the Great Lakes, the First Peoples of Michigan faced a new empire—one that dismissed their diplomacy, severed their trade, and threatened their way of life. Led by Odawa war chief Pontiac and inspired by the spiritual teachings of Neolin, tribes from across the region united in a massive resistance campaign. This episode traces the dramatic siege of Fort Detroit, the harrowing use of smallpox at Fort Pitt, and the chilling aftermath of Pontiac's assassination, including the haunting legend of Starved Rock. From war councils beneath the pines to vengeance on the banks of the Mississippi, Pontiac's War was not just a rebellion—it was a defense of land, life, and sovereignty. And its echoes still shape the memory of the Great Lakes today. Tune in as End of the Road in Michigan brings this powerful story to life through dramatic narrative and historic insight.
“You see bald-headed people who have been treated for cancer. ‘You're trying to kill cancer cells, why the hell are you going bald?'”The provocative rhetorical question is asked by professor Thomas Seyfried, whose research at Boston College will revolutionize our understanding of cancer and other chronic diseases.“Metabolic therapy kills cancer cells and keeps your hair”, he says.“People are being brutalized by the system. They're being treated by people who don't know the biology and biochemistry behind the disease.”“Cancer is not a genetic disease, it's a metabolic problem. The reason everybody says it's a genetic disease is confirmation bias. It's been hammered into everybody's brain”, Seyfried says.We can see that conventional oncology is not addressing the right problem, because the death rates aren't dropping the way they should, he points out."The promise of the gene theory has not come to fruition, nor will it ever do. Meanwhile, thousands of people are dying every day. It's the greatest tragedy in the history of medicine."Thomas Seyfried does not dismiss conventional methods like radiation and chemo, but the problem is that those are being employed first, when they should be employed last.Seyfried contends that cancer is “a remarkably simple disorder” when you understand the biology. But we have made it complicated and mysterious by focusing on downstream phenomena instead of the actual cause, metabolic dysfunction.“You really have to work hard to get your body to get cancer”, he says.“Our paleolithic ancestors and those who live according to traditional ways rarely have cancer. Animals in nature rarely have cancer.”“Before antibiotics and orthopedic surgeons we died from injuries and infections. What's killing us now, whether it's dementia, cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes, is civilization itself.”Which means: Not exercising, being under stress, having poor sleep and eating ultra-processed food (sometimes food-like substances). Our bodies become less and less capable of using oxygen to generate energy. Cells resort to fermentation, like cells in primitive life forms once did. This is the crux of the matter. When cells switch from oxygen to glucose (a sugar) and glutamine (an amino acid) to generate energy, they become cancer cells. The solution? Starving the tumor.German doctor Otto Warburg discovered the metabolic mechanism behind dysregulated cell growth already a century ago. But other theories outmaneuvered his findings. Before rediscovering Warburg's theory and improving it, Thomas Seyfried was “just as indoctrinated as everybody else”, he says.Seyfried and his colleagues developed a diet-drug combination to destroy tumors by doing away with the detrimental fuels glucose and glutamine.A low-carb, high fat diet plus fasting targets glucose (healthy cells can burn fatty acids and ketone bodies, cancer cells cannot), and a “press-pulse” method including certain repurposed anti-parasite drugs targets glutamine. Add exercise.Patients can keep track of the levels of glucose and ketones in their blood with a simple device.“We're getting longer and longer survivors for the so-called terminal cancers.”One big obstacle to getting established medicine to rethink is that there is no money in metabolic therapy. There's no pill or shot for Big Pharma to sell. But Seyfried is optimistic:“When you educate people in certain ways and make certain products that will keep the entire body healthy, this will be a new industry. It's coming.”Seyfried's research at Boston CollegeIHMC Lecture by Seyfried

But here's the thing—his mother, Cristen Donat, didn't seem concerned at all.How does a baby end up in this condition? What really happened inside that home? And when the case went to court, why did the punishment (or lack of it) leave everyone outraged? You don't want to miss this one. In late December, I met in Tel Aviv with Lishay Miran-Lavi's brother, Moshe, who was visiting for a few weeks from his home in New York. He has been a prizefighter on behalf of his brother-in-law, Omri Miran, husband of his sister, Lishay, and father to two little girls, Roni and Alma. A few days after seeing Moshe, I drove to meet with Lishay at her home in southern Israel. Omri is not on “the list” of hostages to be released in the first phase of the so-called “deal” with Hamas. This rightly enraged Lishay. She works tirelessly to maintain attention, in Israel and internationally, on the plight of her husband and all the hostages. And she has a lot to say about the erosion of values that have always sustained this beleaguered nation: solidarity and the valuing of human life above all else. In her torment, Lishay questions whether Israel still embodies the ideals on which she was raised. Now, after the last few weeks of hostage releases —culminating in the macabre theatrics when masked and heavily-armed Hamas thugs tormented three cadaverous male captives last Saturday—there is widespread rage among so many in the civilized world. The hostages are out of time. They are wasting away and being tortured. Starved. President Trump on Tuesday made very sharp comments about Hamas savagery that have ricocheted around the world. If you missed his remarks, we include the most searing in this podcast episode.Lishay speaks about the agony of uncertainty but also her ferocious love and devotion, as a mother. There I was, a stranger, in her home, asking her all manner of questions that would—in a normal life—be intrusive. But her life is anything but normal, and she will do anything to bring her beloved husband, Omri, home from Hamas hell. Lishay and her family experienced unimaginable trauma on October 7, which she discusses, as well as the enormous effort it takes to push through each and every day. Her determination and composure are heroic. We see these traits in many hostages and family members, but it is no less extraordinary each time. Every day is fraught in a way and to a degree that is incomprehensible. State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time“Our culture has filled our heads but emptied our hearts, stuffed our wallets but starved our wonder. It has fed our thirst for facts but not for meaning or mystery. It produces "nice" people, not heroes.” (Peter Kreeft)Because people have been so intent on other things that they have given up on reflecting on the works of God and thereby praising the creator for His many graces and blessings. God intends to rouse a slumbering humanity with wonder and awe as His beloved sons and daughters. When Indianapolis police responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive child on April 9, 2024, they couldn't have guessed the horrific circumstances of the victim's life and death. 5-year-old Kinsleigh Welty, who weighed only 21 pounds, was clearly malnourished. She had a bruise on her face and fecal matter on her body and matted into her hair, which was crawling with lice. Kinsleigh was pronounced dead at Riley Hospital for Children the same day. This is the story of yet another child failed by Indiana's child welfare system. It's also the story of yet another case of reunification gone wrong and a child who thrived in the care of others, only to die at the hands of a biological parent. Also in this episode, you'll hear from Kinsleigh's great-aunt, Carrie Hogan, who, along with many others, demands change from Indiana's Department of Child Services. This is the gut-wrenching story of Kinsleigh Welty.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com.
