POPULARITY
This stylized post-apocalyptic thriller is a unique example of a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster with overtly Christian themes, even if it stops just short of a true Christian message. Directed by the Hughes Brothers (MENACE II SOCIETY, DEAD PRESIDENTS, FROM HELL) and starring beloved leading man Denzel Washington, THE BOOK OF ELI depicts the Bible as a source of tremendous power in a fallen world. Eli (Denzel Washington) is a survivor of a nuclear holocaust, wandering westward on a mysterious mission with few possessions except for a large book that he treasures. When Eli crosses paths with local warlord Carnegie (Gary Oldman), Carnegie suspects that Eli's book may be the Bible, which Carnegie himself has been seeking because he believes reading it will give him the power to control large groups of people. Carnegie is perhaps a metaphor for hypocritical conmen religious leaders who use Christianity as a way to acquire power and money, whereas Eli could represent Christ or even just a true honest believer who has made it his mission to spread faith into the world. This metaphor becomes even more clear when Eli's quest is revealed to be delivery of the Bible to an enclave of secret archivists who will reprint and preserve it forever. The authenticity of Eli's faith becomes even more clear when Carnegie does steal the Bible, only to be upset to find it is written in Braille, revealing Eli to have been blind the whole time. Despite being mortally wounded by Carnegie, Eli makes it to the archivists in time to speak the entire Bible to them as an oral tradition, ensuring its preservation. In the final scene of the movie, we see the archivists putting the newly reprinted Bible on a shelf alongside the Torah and the Quran. This ending, which is obviously inspired by the novel FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury, shows that THE BOOK OF ELI is not a truly Christian genre film — few faith-based films would equate the Bible and the Quran. To view THE BOOK OF ELI through the lens of faith-based film criticism is to see it as a religious cop out; hinting that the Bible is the source of spiritual truth but ultimately dismissing it as “just another book on a shelf.” View our full episode list and subscribe to any of our public feeds: http://boysbiblestudy.com Unlock 2+ bonus episodes per month: http://patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Subscribe to our Twitch for livestreams: http://twitch.tv/boysbiblestudy Follow us on Instagram: http://instagram.com/boysbiblestudy Follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/boysbiblestudy

Bonanza City needs fun, badly. Life force running low. Or maybe they needed the books after all.
Taking place within a future apocalyptic wasteland, Denzel Washington plays the titular Eli and he's traversing through this wasteland with an all-important book (hence the title)...along with a super-sharp machete blade, shotgun, killer instincts, and car battery-powered IPod Classic. Things get hairy once he arrives in the wrong town where the local villain Carnegie (Gary Oldman) wants to take possession of this mysterious book. And what results is an increasingly violent stand-off between Eli and Carnegie's small army of marauders lead by Redridge played by the late, great Ray Stevenson. Along the way, Eli takes in a sort-of-protégé Solara played by Mila Kunis. Directed by Allen and Albert Hughes (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents), this bleak action thriller borrows a LOT from The Mad Max Saga but it has a strong enough cast to keep things interesting.... Why "pull an Eli" when you can do it twice? That might be the ace (or two) Deion Sanders has up his sleeve regarding his son Shedeur Sanders and fellow Colorado football star Travis Hunter's NFL futures. Eli Manning's NFL legacy is complicated, but Coach Prime reads from the Book of Eli.Bad things always come in threes, as Georgia had a no good, very bad weekend on the college football front. Does Kirby Smart have a culture problem or is it something else?Plus, John Calipari looked exceptionally Jimbo Fisher during March Madness. Is he the college basketball equivalent of the fast-talking former snake oil salesman of Texas A&M?Also, the boys continued their Spring Break with Antonio by venturing to Provo, Utah.John Buhler (Staff Writer, FanSided.com) and Cody Williams (Senior Editor, FanSided.com) covered all that and then some on the 60th episode of False Start. We are so far in the weeds of the offseason that it is totally awesome, brother. Enjoy!
Today we dive into the Book of Eli (2010) starring Denzel Washington. While the distinct visuals and action sequences are fun to look at, the heavy-handed religious undertones and bizarre plot twist may leave viewers disappointed by the end of the movie. We offer our better movie suggestion on one of the character styling choices and try to gauge how long it really should take someone to travel across the country by foot.

0:00 - Getting existential and talking about how a film and a TV show prompted deep thoughts about faith and skepticism, the actions we choose to take, and the way we choose to live our lives. **Disclaimer: I am not a spiritual or religious authority. I don't pretend to have a perfect understanding of any religious doctrine, I just was raised Catholic. My experience is my own, but also, anecdotally, a lot of people's experience as well.** The Outsider and The Book of Eli Both about faith. Interesting pairing of stories. Holly at one point says she often needs skeptics more than she needs believers. It gets me thinking about the importance of open-mindedness on both ends. Believers and skeptics need to accept each other. They make each other stronger. But they have to come to their beliefs at their own pace. This show, and book, almost seems to be explicitly about faith. As far as Eli goes, I really thought the story was so effective and I love that the villain acknowledges the history of abuse of the masses with the sword of religion. I love how important everyone recognizes the Bible to be. I love how driven Eli is to deliver the Word, but also recognizes that his flaw was in spreading the word without living it. Putting the mission at risk to enact the values. The idea that spreading an ideology is about spreading it through lived example first and through word of mouth second, or not at all. ----- Thanks for joining us!
