Rennie and I are back another episode or KILL OR BE KILLED, our exploration of the bleak, brutal movies of the 70' and 80's. The seminal masterpiece PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID, directed by Sam Peckinpah, in prime form, is our subject this time around. There are a multitude of cuts available that have been released over the years so, for the record, we will be used the 1988 Turner Preview Cut for basis. This, 122 minute version is an attempt to combine the theatrical release and some “new” scenes that we edited out of the theatrical version and is widely considered closer to Sam Peckinpah's intent. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Knocking on Heaven's Door” – Bob Dylan

We go a little bit off brand with this installment of Kill or Be Killed. Initially, our focus was stated as badass films from the 70's, but this time around we are covering Romeo is Bleeding for a 90's neo-noir. It's a preview of what we will be doing with our Neo Noir Maniacs miniseries over at Necomaniacs. Romeo is Bleeding was released in 1993, directed by Peter Medak, written by Hilary Henkin and stars Gary Oldman. Though it was met with relatively lukewarm reception during it release, it is now considered to be a classic. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Romeo and the Lonely Girl” – Thin Lizzy

This week Rennie and I discuss William Friedkin's SORCERER, a film that was a critical and commercial flop when it was released in 1977. As the years went by, the film enjoyed a critical reassessment and is even considered by some to be a classic. If you are a fan of gritty realism where there are no heroes, this is a film for you. Also, dig the incredible score by Tangerine Dream. Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Intro 2: “The Call” – Tangerine Dream Outro: “Abyss” – Tangerine Dream

"Kill or Be Killed" delivered by Brother Asad and Pastor Abimbola emphasizes the importance of adopting a ruthless attitude towards sin in one's life. It draws parallels to the biblical story of Phinehas, who took immediate and decisive action against sin to stop a plague among the Israelites. The message encouraged us to fight the good fight of faith, recognizing that sin is an enemy that must be destroyed before it destroys us. By taking quick, righteous action to eliminate sin, we can ensure our spiritual well-being and the generational blessings that follow. The sermon underscores the necessity of being vigilant and proactive in dealing with sin, embodying a "Kill or Be Killed" mentality to maintain holiness and righteousness.

Phillip and Eric break down the thrilling conclusion to the dark vigilante Image comic, Kill or Be Killed by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips! They talk unreliable narration techniques, the ambiguous ending they didn't see coming, and discuss how stupid the Todd Phillips sequel is despite neither of them having seen it.
This episode Mike makes his way from Philadelphia to Lancaster, PA and the appropriately named Comic Store and its owner, Charles Park. Charles is hands down one of the most interesting comic shop owners ever. No exaggeration, as the story he tells will attest. What started out as a Pitstop version of the Roadshow, where there is just a quick recommendation from the owner, turned into hearing a fascinating story from Charles. Charles' knowledge of comics spans decades and there were times Mike almost forgot he was recording for being so wrapped up in the story. The Comic Store is in a cool brick building and is chock full of comics and related goodies. Mike spent a couple of hours there just perusing the shelves and asking Charles questions. Mike is then joined by another longtime podcaster, the illustrious Chris Eberle! Chris was one of the voices on Comic Geek Speak for years, and is steeped in comics knowledge, particularly Marvel comics. As a former comic shop owner and educator, he was great to team up with for the review of Kill or Be Killed! And, as a self-proclaimed follower and fan of the creative team, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, he was the perfect cohost for this episode! You can occasionally catch Chris on Ian Levenstein's Comic Timing and Paul Spataro's Back to the Bins podcasts, both of which you can find on all the podcast feeds. Many thanks to Charles for his fantastic story and great recommendation, and a big thanks to Chris Eberle for joining me!

It's part two of Philip and Eric's discussion of the deconstructive vigilante Image comic, Kill or Be Killed by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips! They discuss the shift in POV from the main character Dylan to former love interest Kira, the subtext of the "angry white vigilante" subgenre, and why sneakerheads who buy expensive shoes should be sent to Alligator Alcatraz.
Phillip and Eric are kicking off the first part of their discussion on the Image comic series Kill or Be Killed by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. They discuss its deconstruction of the vigilante hero, its parallels to stories like Taxi Driver and Joker and its roots to the socioeconomic circumstances of its times, and how if Phil would still support Zohran Mamdani if he outlawed Spider-Man and taxed Doctor Strange.

Sam Peckinpah embodies the essence of what the Kill or Be Killed project is all about like no other filmmaker. This is the kickoff episode of our newest series, Kill or Be Killed, an exploration of neo-noir and crime cinema. Rennie Resmini joins us as cohost and we'll be talking about some of the iconic films in this subgenre. This week, we cover Thief, Michael Mann's debut feature film from 1981. Based on “The Home Invaders” the novel by Ronnie Caan, Mann creates a cold landscape of outsiders, criminals and crooked cops brought to life by an incredible cast lead by James Caan and Tuesday Weld including James Belushi, Robertr Prosky, Dennis Farina and Willie Nelson Intro: “Thief Cue 1” – Tangerine Dream Outro: “Thief Cue 2” – Tangerine Dream
Act 3: The Endgame – “Kill or Be Killed” By the final act, the arena is littered with bodies, and only a few contestants remain. Randall, Dana, and a handful of others must navigate the final rounds, where the weapons get deadlier and the fights more brutal. But the true horror of Versus isn't just the violence—it's the realization that there is no way out, no matter how many lives are taken. The system is rigged, and only those behind the tournament—The Promoter, The Executioner, and their faceless audience—stand to win. In the climactic fight, Randall is forced to face his ex-girlfriend Samantha, whom he tried to help by getting her the very job that led her here. The emotional weight of their shared past crashes into the brutality of the arena, as the two fight not just for survival, but for closure. Randall knows only one of them can leave the platform alive, and he must confront the darkest parts of himself to do what's necessary. As the final bell tolls, the blood-drenched survivors stand victorious, but at what cost? The prize of freedom now feels like a hollow victory. Dana and Randall, broken and scarred, are left wondering if they've truly escaped—or if the tournament has only just begun. The final moments reveal a chilling twist: Versus is just one of many such tournaments happening across the globe. The Promoter, his identity still shrouded in mystery, congratulates the unseen viewers and teases the next event, leaving the audience with a haunting question: how far will humanity go for entertainment? Conclusion: Versus is a gut-wrenching, fast-paced descent into the darkest corners of human nature, where survival is earned in blood, and death is just another roll of the dice. With each act more intense than the last, the show pushes the boundaries of morality, violence, and desperation in a world where the line between entertainment and horror has been obliterated. Prepare to be both horrified and captivated, as the Versus Tournament leaves a trail of bodies—and questions—behind. About VS: "Sixteen people. Three rounds. One survivor. Welcome to the Versus Tournament, where everyday people must fight to the death—live-streamed for the darkest corners of the web. A brutal, high-stakes competition where only one escapes with their life... if they can survive the blood-soaked horrors within." Inspired by the dark and twisted imaginations of Scott Sigler, Versus is a full-cast performance podcast where Saw meets Gladiator in a terrifying, action-packed three-part saga. With Academy worthy sound design and a cinematic score that will leave you on edge, every moment is crafted to plunge listeners into the terrifying brutality of the tournament. Beverly Hills, located just southwest of the Hollywood Hills, was and still is a place that the rich, famous and glamorous choose to make their homes. Known for its opulence and luxury, the homes in Beverly Hills are some of the most expensive in the United States, with some properties worth tens of millions of dollars. But behind the country clubs, cocktail hours and shopping trips, there was something much darker brewing in a high end Beverly Hills neighborhood. On August 20th, 1989, business executive Jose Menendez and his wife Kitty were brutally murdered while sitting in the living room of their sprawling Mediterranean style mansion, and what seemingly made this tragedy worse was the fact that their two son's, Lyle and Erik, were the ones to make the gruesome discovery of their bodies. Suddenly orphaned, the Menendez brothers were initially looked at with sympathy, but soon they would be on trial for the murder of their parents. Lyle and Erik didn't deny that they had taken their parents' lives, but according to them it was because they were scared and broken down after a lifetime of abuse. At the time, most people believed this was a fabricated excuse, and the prosecution gave greed and money as the true motive. A tragedy and trial played out for the world on television, ending with both Erik and Lyle confined at the Richard Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego for life, with no chance of parole. Recently, newly discovered evidence and testimony has raised questions of whether Erik and Lyle were being honest about the constant state of stress and fear their parents forced them to live under.
