In this Thursday episode of Book Talk for BookTok, we bring an academic lens to bookish culture, genre fiction, and the conversations shaping romance and romantasy today. Our podcast blends literary analysis, cultural criticism, and emotional honesty. We treat romance, romantasy, and fanfiction as genres worthy of serious discussion, not just quick takes. This episode is part of our Subtext Society series, inspired by The Subtext Society Journal. The Subtext Society Journal is a collaborative publication dedicated to thoughtful essays on romance, romantasy, fan culture, and publishing ethics. We explore moral questions, genre evolution, power dynamics, and the real-world impact of stories, guided by values of literary rigor without gatekeeping, community over hierarchy, and ethics-first analysis. Today's discussion focuses on the article: “The Reader's Space" The article examines the evolving idea of the “reader's space,” tracing how traditionally reader-centered environments like review platforms have become more complicated with the rise of social media and BookTok, where authors are expected to market themselves and engage publicly. It explores the tension between readers wanting spaces for honest discussion free from author influence and authors navigating visibility, marketing pressure, and emotional vulnerability in a highly competitive publishing landscape. The piece argues that while authors should avoid inserting themselves into reader reviews, readers also play a role in blurring boundaries by tagging authors or drawing them into discourse. Ultimately, it calls for nuance, empathy, and shared responsibility, suggesting that online book communities function as hybrid spaces where both readers and authors must learn evolving norms and practice mutual respect. Welcome to Season of Aquarius, our book club season on Book Talk for BookTok, a fantasy and romantasy podcast centered on thoughtful discussion and literary analysis. This season is created for readers who want more than quick takes and star ratings, offering space to explore how and why stories work on the page. This is not a traditional book review podcast; it's an analysis and conversation. Each week, we share flash literary analysis that examines themes, authorial intent, character arcs, symbolism, world-building, and key plot devices. Our discussions move beyond initial impressions to unpack narrative choices, emotional resonance, and the craft behind fantasy and romantasy storytelling. We aim to bridge academic literary insight with the modern reading experience shaped by BookTok and online reading communities. This week, we discuss As Many Souls as Stars by Natasha Siegel. In this solo episode, I get real about what it looks like to grow in private when nobody is clapping for you. I open up about being off social media for almost six months, bulk recording episodes, walking into meetings in my “raw” natural state, and realizing how much of my confidence used to be tied to validation. From sitting in a producer's office questioning my slick-back bun and sauna sweats, to asking myself why I feel the urge to post every win, I had to confront whether I'm disciplined… or just addicted to applause.I talk about replacing posting with journaling, prayer, and obedience. About not announcing the goal — just finishing. About fasting without telling anyone. About going to the gym at 6 a.m. with no camera. About letting God build me in the prayer room instead of on a platform. This episode is about moving in swift obedience, walking in true authority, and becoming the woman God called me to be — even when nobody sees it.Please leave a review , if this episode spoke to you!For exclusive bonus content, behind-the-scenes vlogs, a place connect with the LTTA FAM plus more, join the LTTA app community at LTTA.app and unlock your invite today!Audio Fam, since you listen to the audio every Monday, don't forget to go watch the YouTube on Tuesday! In June of 2002, a 14-year-old girl was taken from her bedroom in the middle of the night, from a quiet home in one of the safest neighborhoods in one of the safest cities in America. Her name was Elizabeth Smart. This case has endured for more than two decades, not only because of what happened to Elizabeth, but because of how it happened. It forces us to confront uncomfortable questions about trust, faith, and what happens when deeply held beliefs collide with someone willing to exploit them.Elizabeth wasn't held for hours or days. She was a prisoner for nine months, subjected to repeated trauma and torture that would have broken most adults. But Elizabeth's story is not just about what happened to her. It's also about survival and strength. It's about a young girl who would later turn the unimaginable into advocacy and support for victims of kidnapping and sexual violence. Today's discussion focuses on the article: “Romantasy: The next frontier of feminism, or where feminism goes to die?" This article explores romantasy as both a powerful feminist space and a revealing site of internalized misogyny, examining why female main characters in women-written fantasy are so often criticized as “too much” in every direction. It connects modern fandom discourse to long-standing cultural conditioning that encourages women to compete rather than support one another, and questions whether those critiques reflect genuine narrative flaws or unresolved discomfort with women claiming power, desire, and complexity. Ultimately, the piece argues that romantasy has the potential to become a training ground for a more thoughtful, generous feminism. One that challenges how we read, write, and talk about women. This week we're meandering through new research from MIT on the rest and digest system, as well as making a sharp turn into “womb envy.” Is the rest and digest system related to womb envy? Not really. I mean, potentially? There is definitely a glandular route through the endocrine system, but I'm not taking that road today! Today I'm just covering two separate topics because I wanted to! Huzzah. Tear. Pour. Live More. Go to https://LIQUIDIV.com and get 20% off your first order with code SCHAUER at checkout. “Wait, so what are today's separate topics?” Rest & digest and then “womb envy.” Thank you again for joining me in the communal Schauer! There's a joke to be made about “womb envy” and a “baby Schauer” - please let me know if you come up with anything solid! Enjoy the episode. Nuance for why I “don't want to get philosophical,” spoiler! It's not because I don't like philosophy, it's because we're going to get into “zero-sum” thinking and game theory and this is where people are going to argue about what economic systems are the “best” and people feel *compelled* to play devil's advocate. This week, we discuss An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. Today's discussion focuses on Heated Rivalry: In this episode, we dive into Heated Rivalry and explore how its recent adaptation from beloved romance novel to television series highlights the growing cultural appetite for queer love stories on screen. We unpack what makes this particular story resonate so deeply, especially with women readers and viewers, from emotionally rich character development to the safe exploration of intimacy, vulnerability, and desire outside of traditional heterosexual power dynamics. By looking at the broader popularity of gay romance among women, we examine how these narratives offer space for emotional authenticity, mutual longing, and romance untethered from the gendered expectations often placed on female characters, ultimately asking what these stories reveal about what audiences are craving from modern love stories. Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussion of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and non-consensual behavior. Listener discretion is advised. In this episode of Book Talk for BookTok, we sit down with T.C. Kraven, author of Of Prophecies and Pomegranates, a dark mythological retelling that grapples honestly with one of the most contested stories in Greek mythology: Hades and Persephone. Together, we explore how Kraven approached retelling a myth that has been romanticized, sanitized, and rewritten countless times. We discuss what it means to engage with the original mythos, including the complicated history behind the so-called “Rape of Persephone,” and how linguistic nuance, power, and consent shaped her interpretation of Persephone's story. This conversation also dives into one of the novel's central thematic threads: self-deception. From Demeter's possessive motherhood, to Helios's obsession, to Hades's self-punishment, we unpack how characters lie to themselves in the name of love, protection, and control. We pay special attention to Kraven's striking portrayal of Demeter as an abusive parent and why that interpretation felt both mythologically grounded and narratively necessary. We also talk about Narcissus, whose arc moves beyond vanity into something far more human and tragic, and why his emotional depth matters to the story as a whole. Finally, for aspiring writers, Kraven shares candid insight into her journey through self-publishing and her transition into traditional publishing, offering thoughtful advice for authors navigating both paths. This episode is a must-listen for readers interested in mythological retellings, feminist reinterpretations of Greek myths, and stories that refuse to look away from uncomfortable truths. In September 2007, 20-year-old American college student Amanda Knox moved to Perugia, Italy to study abroad and experience life on her own. She settled into a stone villa with three other young women and quickly began building friendships with her new roommates, forming a particularly close bond with 21-year-old British exchange student Meredith Kercher.Just weeks later, on November 2, Amanda would find herself standing outside that same home as police and paramedics rushed inside. Not fluent in Italian, she didn't fully understand what was happening - only that Meredith had been found murdered in the villa they shared. Despite having no clue what was going on, Amanda became the focus of the murder investigation within hours. And what followed would become one of the most controversial criminal cases of the modern era, marked by intense scrutiny, global media coverage, and sharply divided opinions about guilt, innocence, and how justice is pursued when the world is watching.Try our coffee! - www.CriminalCoffeeCo.comBecome a Patreon member -- > https://www.patreon.com/CrimeWeeklyShop for your Crime Weekly gear here --> https://crimeweeklypodcast.com/shopYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CrimeWeeklyPodcastWebsite: CrimeWeeklyPodcast.comInstagram: @CrimeWeeklyPodTwitter: @CrimeWeeklyPodFacebook: @CrimeWeeklyPodADS:1. https://www.ThePetsTable.com - Use code CRIMEWEEKLY55 for 55% off your first box PLUS 10% off your next two!2. https://www.Quince.com/CrimeWeekly - Get FREE shipping and 365-Day Returns!3. https://www.FactorMeals.com/CrimeWeekly50Off - Get 50% off your first box and FREE breakfast for one year!4. https://www.LiquidIV.com - Use code CRIMEWEEKLY for 20% off your first order!

Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-101-behind-the-billboard-x-ad-club-of-new-yorkEpisode #101 takes us to America and the first of our New York Specials, which was a collaboration with the Ad Club of New York at their annual Breakfast Briefing “OOH NOW” in Tribeca, downtown Manhattan. It was a great event, a room full of the smartest (and loudest!) in the industry. Elicia Greenberg & Tara Claesgens were our wonderful hosts who made us feel incredibly welcome. The theme was ‘OOH NOW - the last real thing' a poignant topic which resonated with all guests. On the day we had 10 mins each with key speakers and attendees, discovering how things work stateside and what OOH has to look forward to in 2026. Jim Norton from Outfront Media discussed how internal creative teams help clients without agencies make the most of OOH creative. Jim talked about one of the key BtB sponsors, SuperOptimal, and how their tools are helping shape OOH renewals on their ‘perm' bookings. Jim's favourite billboard is for his brother's lawn mower company in Boston: ‘Say no to weeds' Ryan Laul from Talon was in the hot seat next. Ryan is an Ad Club board member and chatted about how these legendary breakfast briefings have changed over the years. We also heard how the Talon Tech Stack is targeting audiences on the go. Grace Teng from Zambezi talked about her agency's successful integrated approach to work, thanks to bringing media back into the building alongside creative. More on this on an upcoming episode, when we chat with CCO Gavin Lester about an incredible Times Square takeover for Liquid IV. Jackie Lyons from Havas discussed the scale of working in the States and the challenges of creating a truly ‘national' OOH campaign … leaning on her experience of cross-board planning for Diageo in Europe. Rhianna Jones from MediaHub talked about the benefits of a business born out of a need for disruption, using OOH as an opportunity for experience. While Mendi Robinson from Lamar chatted about the challenges of supporting clients creatively with many shapes and sizes of screen and units across just their own estate.Huge thanks:Advertising Club of New YorkNewsstand StudiosBauer Media OutdoorView2FillSuper OptimalGAS Music

In 1974, Wichita, Kansas was shaken by a series of brutal attacks inside family homes. Men, women, and children were bound, tortured, and killed by a predator who called himself BTK. For 17 years, he terrorized the community, claiming at least 10 victims and taunting police with disturbing letters that detailed his crimes. Then in 1991, the killings abruptly stopped, leaving law enforcement and the public to wonder if the killer had vanished forever. For more than a decade, there was silence. Then in 2004, BTK resurfaced with new messages, reigniting fear in Wichita. But that renewed need for attention would ultimately be his downfall, and by the following year, detectives had identified the killer as Dennis Rader, a father of two, a Scout leader, and a trusted member of his church council. Rader was the last person anyone suspected of being a sexual sadist serial killer, but once investigators began putting all the puzzle pieces together, it became clear that Rader's family-man persona was just a mask covering the monster beneath.
