Jaws not only created the blockbuster it also led to a ton of imitators. Sharks may be misunderstood in real life but in the movies they’re just trying to bite your face off.

This week Brian goes over the newest national phenomenon that being the exciting historical run of the US Women's Soccer team to World Cup excellence. He discusses if the sudden interest in Soccer is here to stay or if it's just a passing fad in the States. He discusses all things 4th of July like Killer Shark attacks and how the movie Jaws has ruined him for life. Shark Attacks can happen at anytime! Blowing up fireworks on July 4th is quite American as well, but blowing them up in your hands when you're a professional athlete who uses those same hands is not a good idea. Just ask New York Giants linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul. He has big problems on his hands like his contract and his epidermis. Brian quickly reviews the NBA free agency period. LaMarcus Alrdridge's new team and what could have been in Sacramento- an all-time bad chemistry team for the ages. Finally, he weighs on the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and all the festivities that encompass this gastronomical event. Spoiler alert-Joey Chestnut DID NOT WIN. Oh, and did he mention his car at all?
Today, a conversation about the consequences of a Supreme Court ruling last May that struck down a 1992 federal law that disallowed most states from being in the business of organized betting on sports. This opens the door for states to pass sports gambling legislation. Five states had already passed laws allowing sports gambling in anticipation of the Supreme Court ruling. A little later in the program, we’ll talk about the possibilities of that happening in MD. But first, a conversation with a person whose perspective on this issue is unique. Tom McMillan was a basketball star at the University of MD in the 1970s, who played in the NBA for 12 years. After his pro basketball career, he went on to represent MD’s fourth district in the US Congress. Today, he is the President and CEO of LEAD1, an association of Athletic Directors at the most prominent NCAA Division One Schools. Tom McMillan joins us on the line from Washington, DC. Jeff Barker covers the business of sports and the casino gambling industry, among other beats, for the Baltimore Sun. He joins us from the studios of NPR in Washington DC.And, joining us on the line from Boston, Daniel Barbarisi, a journalist and author of book Dueling With Kings: High Stakes, Killer Sharks, and the Get-Rich Promise of Daily Fantasy Sports. Daniel is a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal. He’s a Senior Editor at the sports website, The Athletic.
Killer Sharks have invaded a golf course in Oz, Australia! Now golfers have something more to worry about than making a ‘corker of a shot’ as the Aussies call a great golf stroke! At least half a dozen man-eating bull sharks, between 8 and 10ft long live in the lake in the center of the course where their fins poking through the water have become a regular sight! Of course, water hazards are a challenge for any golfer, but on this Queensland course you might end up in the Pad of Stitches, which the Aussies call a hospital. The sharks got into the lake when it flooded some years ago after a river broke its banks, and became stranded when the water receded. Now they are thriving and having pups, as newborn sharks are called! The sharks have become quite the attraction as the course holds a tournament called the Shark Lake Challenge every month. But, those free golf balls recovered from the water might cost you an arm and a leg☺ What’s another word for the fear of sharks? selacophobia!
